Bajaj To Launch Electric Bike, Files for Trademark called 'Freeride' and "Bajaj Floor"

Bajaj Auto has applied for a new trademark in India for the name 'Freerider', as per the listing on the Patent Design and Trademark website of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The company had applied for the trademark on March 1, 2021 and it has already been approved by June 21. There is no concrete information about where the company will use the newly registered trademark. According to the information, the company can use this new name in its upcoming electric bike.

According to few media reports, Freerider is expected to use the same electric powertrain as that of Husqvarna E-Pilen concept. E-Pilen is equipped with an 8kW (10.73 bhp) electric motor. Details about power output are yet to be revealed. The motorcycle will have a range of around 100 km, which should be sufficient for city needs. To take care of range anxiety, E-Pilen will be equipped with swappable batteries. It is apparent that the company will be focusing on developing the necessary infrastructure to sustain its electric two wheelers.

E-Pilen Concept [Image - husqvarna-motorcycles.com]

Bajaj Freerider may hit the markets sooner than expected. That’s because Bajaj has been collaborating with KTM, whose parent company is same as of E-Pilen, for developing a common electric platform. It is expected to spawn multiple electric two wheelers in the range of 3kW to 10kW. Most of these will be using a 48v electric system.

Bajaj has also filed a trademark in the name of Bajaj Floor and Bajaj Floor in India a few months back. According to the reports, the company will also use these names in its electric two wheeler. The company has registered this new trademark under the two wheeler, motorcycle, scooter, three wheeler and four wheeler listing in the description box in the patent document. According to which it is being speculated that the company will use this new name only for its electric scooter or bike.

Bajaj's line-up of electric vehicles currently includes the company's electric scooter Chetak. The scooter has been a huge hit in the Indian market, but due to reasons like limited production capacity and availability, it is facing a shortage. Recently, after some amendments made in the FAME-2 policy of the Government of India, there has been a decline in the prices of domestic electric vehicles. Under which the government is now giving more subsidy on domestic electric two wheelers.

The earlier subsidy on domestic electric vehicles was Rs 10,000 per kWh, which the Department of Heavy Industries (DHI) has now increased to Rs 15,000 per KWh after the Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Manufacturing (FAME II) amendment. After the arrival of this policy of the government, Bajaj's electric two wheeler segment can see a boom. But it is too early to comment on any kind of timeline.

  • CredR to provide an instant exchange price for the petrol 2-wheeler
  • Launching in Delhi NCR, Pune, Bangalore and Jaipur

New Delhi, 22 January 2021: Electric mobility has gained unprecedented importance in India over the last few years. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, people are becoming environment conscious and are moving towards the adoption of electric vehicles. Moreover, EVs are gaining higher acceptability due to the low purchase price, low running costs and ease of use.

With people moving towards EVs, it was natural for CredR – an Omni-channel two-wheeler used consumer brand to collaborate with BLive, India's leading Electric Bike Tourism Platform. Blive has now launched India’s first EV Store. With this collaboration, users can exchange any petrol-based two-wheeler with E-Scooters sold on the Blive Store . While exchanging the old two-wheeler, CredR will offer instant quotes for old petrol scooters thus reducing the upfront cost of BLive e-bikes.

An instant price quote/ estimate will be generated through the proprietary pricing application powered by CredR. To complete the transaction, CredR will verify the documents and the health of the petrol version of the two-wheeler. The exchange price will then be adjusted against the final cost of the new BLive electric two-wheeler. Currently, the program is applicable in Delhi NCR, Jaipur, Bangalore and Pune and will soon be expanded to other cities across India.

Commenting on this collaboration, Sasidhar Nandigam, Chief Strategic Officer, CredR said, “India’s Electric mobility landscape is going to change dramatically post COVID-19 pandemic and the sales are expected to rise. As the sales of overall two-wheelers will see a boom, there will also be a rise in sales of second-hand e-two wheelers. Currently, electric mobility contributes to less than 1% of the two-wheelers market that can only increase from here. We are tremendously excited to partner with BLive in bringing about this shift in the market."

Speaking on the announcement, Samarth Kholkar, CEO and Co-Founder, BLive said, “The more consumers experience EVs, the higher will be the adoption of the same. BLive, through its Ebike tours has been offering the same across 9 states of India giving consumers an opportunity to try EBikes. With the online EV store we want to offer the best experience of buying an EV making the adoption easier, whether it is with the range of EVs or the options to buy. With CredR, buying an EV becomes even simpler with consumers getting the advantage of not worrying about the older two-wheeler they own. We see this as a very strategic partnership as we add more brands."

CredR is India’s most trusted and only omni-channel consumer brand for buying and selling used two-wheelers. Founded in 2015, CredR, aims to simplify the entire process of transacting in used two-wheelers, by offering industry’s-first-in-class products/ services for building trust in a segment which is highly unorganized and fragmented. Electric 2-Wheeler Makers Learning to Survive without Subsidy, FAME II Not Worked: SMEV

Mass segment electric two-wheeler makers are learning to "live without government support" as FAME II scheme to promote electric mobility has not met its objective, according to industry body SMEV.

The Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicle (SMEV) said after getting a "shock" when FAME II was implemented from April 1, 2019, the industry has devised ways to keep afloat by selling low to mid-speed vehicles, which don't qualify for incentives at heavy discount but incurring losses in the process.

"Industry got a big shock when FAME II started. People are now learning to survive without government assistance to some extent at least. The result of this is that subsidised vehicle sales have dropped drastically but industry sales has not dropped," SMEV Director General Sohinder Gill told PTI.

He was responding to a query on the impact of FAME II on the electric two-wheeler market.

Gill further said, "If it was only customer-incentivised vehicles (under FAME II), the industry would have totally collapsed."

As per SMEV data, sales of FAME II qualified electric two-wheelers in April-December 2019 period stood at just 3,000 units as against 48,671 units in the year-ago period when FAME I was in place, a decline of 93.84 per cent.

On the other hand, as per industry estimates, non-subsidised electric two-wheeler sales stood at 49,000 units during the period as compared to around 10,000 units in the year-ago period when FAME I was in place.

"What happened was that many players came with alternate products and models and tried to make some business out of it. Prices of subsidised products have become very high so the industry had to resort again to bring mid- and entry-level products to get volumes with heavy discounts," he added.

Gill said many companies are now making more losses than earlier.

Expressing similar views, Hero Electric Managing Director Naveen Munjal said that technically one year has almost been "wiped out from our balance sheet" and the company is only going ahead as it makes senses "in the long run and in the bigger scheme of things but we are bleeding in the process".

Pointing out that FAME II hasn't met its objective, Gill said, "Market should have shifted towards higher speed and greater performance, which has not happened."

He further said, "In the current avatar of FAME II, you will find volumes (for incentivised electric two-wheelers) very very low."

Gill, however, expressed optimism that from next year onwards volumes will start coming back in a much better way "not because of government incentives" but due to the business models that companies have pursued such as focussing on low- and mid-range models, and B2B deliveries.

He said the government needs to have a rework on FAME II, especially eligibility criteria based on range and battery power while also relaxing localisation level, which will be 75 per cent from March this year, up from 50 per cent since March 1, 2019.

"Internal combustion engine vehicles, even after 40-50 years have not reached 75-80 per cent localisation. So in electric mobility they expect that 75 per cent must be localised from March 1, 2020," Gill lamented.

He cautioned that if "FAME II is not reworked, industry will bottom out".

"They will still get volumes but subsidised products will be very less. The market will continue to sell products, which are liked by customers which are low- and mid-speed range," he said. PTI RKL

India Releases $1.45 Bn worth of Action Plan for E-Vehicles; Ban on IC-based 2-Wheelers from 2025

India, under its "National Mission for Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage" initiative, has formulated an action plan to run electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler vehicles. The action plan formulated by NITI Aayog has proposed to ban all IC (internal combustion) engine powered two-wheelers and three-wheelers in India. The ban on IC-based two-wheelers will start in 2025 and for hree-wheelers the ban will start in 2023.

This information was given by Mr. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways in response to a question in Lok Sabha today.

For the promotion of electric mobility in the country, the Department of Heavy Industry has notified Phase-II of the FAME India Scheme [Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric (& Hybrid) Vehicles in India], vide S.O. 1300 dated 8th March 2019, with the approval of Cabinet with an outlay of Rs. 10,000 crore (~ US$1.45 Bn) for a period of 3 years commencing from 1st April, 2019.

The Phase-II of the FAME-India Scheme is proposed to be implemented through the following verticals:

  1. Demand Incentives - The important components of the Scheme which directly help in demand generation of electric vehicles (e-vehicles).

  2. Establishment of network of charging stations.

  3. Administration of the Scheme including Publicity, IEC (Information, Education & Communication) activities.

The following categories of Vehicles will be eligible for Demand Incentives:

  • e-Bus

  • Four Wheelers (Electric, Plug in Hybrid and Strong Hybrid) (e-4W).

  • Three Wheelers (Electric) including Registered E-Rickshaws / e-Carts (e-3W)

  • Two wheelers (Electric) - (e-2W)

In the e-3W, e-4W and e-Bus segments, incentives will be applicable mainly to vehicles used for PUBLIC transport or those registered for COMMERCIAL purposes. However for e-2W segment, incentives are also applicable for privately owned vehicles in addition to those used for public transport or for commercial purpose.

Eligibility for Incentives

The Incentives shall be available for buyers (end users/consumers) in the form of an upfront-reduced purchase price to enable wider adoption, which will be reimbursed to vehicle manufacturers by Govt. of India.

  • For individual beneficiaries, not more than one vehicle of particular categories will be incentivized.

  • The incentives would be reviewed annually or earlier by the Project Implementation & Sanctioning Committee (PISC).

  • All models eligible for demand incentives will be eligible for three year comprehensive warranty including Battery.

  • Demand incentives for e-buses will be provided only on operational model (OPEX) and will be delivered though State/City Transport Corporations (STUs).

  • Under the action plan, it is proposed to restrict Demand incentives to vehicles with ex-factory price less than a particular threshold value as defined in the Annexure 2 of scheme notification.

Vehicles which comply with the FAME India Phase-II eligibility criteria, will be considered under this scheme, and for this all the vehicles need to be registered under CMVR, 1989 for becoming eligible for reimbursement of demand incentives.

It is proposed to extend uniform demand incentive @ INR 10,000/- per KWh for all e-vehicles (including PHEV and Strong Hybrid) except e-Buses. For buses, uniform maximum demand incentive @ 1NR 20,000/- per KWh is proposed, which is further subject to competitive bidding amongst the OEMs.

All vehicle models approved under FAME India scheme Phase 11, will have to undergo Conformity of Production COP test for all the eligibility parameters by recognized testing agencies at least once a year.

FAME-II certificate will be valid for one year (April to March). All vehicle models approved under this Scheme, will have to submit re-validation certification to DHI/N AB at the frequency of one year as per clause 2.14 & 2.15 above, complying to the FAME India Phase II eligibility parameters. Such OEM will proceed for re-validation after ensuring the compliance to the latest notifications as per CMVR, 1989, by testing agencies recognized under rule 126 of CMV, 1989 and Administrative procedure as per FAME India Scheme Phase-II document.

Meet Spero, India’s First Crowdfunded Eco-Friendly Electric Bike

The environment problem is real, and its high time that the citizens of the Earth start taking a stock of their actions and really do something to fish the world out of this crisis. It is for sure a problem that will take a long time to get solved but in order to reach there, the mankind needs to start with small-small steps everyday. Spero, India's first crowdfunded eco-friendly electric bike is a step in that very direction.

Manufactured by Milltex Engineers, a Coimbatore based company, the Spero electric bike offers a smart alternative for the current urban commutation problems. Though light in weight, the e-bike isn't particularly light on pocket. The base Spero model starts at an expensive Rs. 29,900.

The central idea behind Spero is quite simple. The makers wanted to manufacture a powered bicycle which is small and lightweight, hence very portable to use. For people who use their motorcycles/cars to get to the metro/train stations, this can serve to be a suitable alternative option.

Massive adoption of the Spero can have a real, significant effect on the current traffic congestion, pollution problems faced almost daily by the urban population and might even improve general public health by propagating a healthier and active lifestyle.

The company recently concluded the first crowdfunding campaign for the high-powered electric bike and raised INR 38,65,000 from 147 funders, way more than its goal of INR 30 Lakhs. The second campaign is currently LIVE and one can book themselves a Spero e-bike through this second campaign. With 56 days remaining, the second round of crowdfunding campaign has currently raised INR 97,200 of its goal of INR 15,00,000.

Running on a 48KV lithium-ion battery with a two-year warranty, the 5-Speed electric Gear shift bike can reach its top speed of 25kmph in mere 10 seconds, when the motor is running. Further, the biggest relief is that the battery is detachable and hence can be charged by anyone, anywhere. According to claims of Milltex Engineers, the battery charges from 20 to 80 percent in just six hours.

The e-bike comes in 3 models:

spero_ebike_models

  • E-30 – Has a range of 30 kms on a single charge (available only in MEN'S model)

  • E-60 – Has a range of 60 kms on a single charge (available in both MEN'S & UNISEX models)

  • E-100 – Has a range of 100 kms on a single charge (available only in MEN'S model)

Price:

The price of the eBike ranges from Rs.55,000 for its base model to Rs.84,900 however one may get the Spero at 45% leeser price in its second crowdfunding campaign here. Prices indicated include cost of delivery.

The idea for the e-bike was conceived and developed by 36-year old, Manikandan, an MBA having ample experience in the manufacturing realm.

The bicycle, which is a result of three years of intense research and development, can be considered as another brilliantly executed ‘Made in India’ story, well almost. According to the company, the e-bike has been made with with a judicious mix of materials that were locally sourced and some key imported components –such as the motor and the tyres come from partners in Korea and the battery comes from Samsung.

So, would you consider booking a Spero for yourself? Do tell us in the comments below.
