Bharat Taxi Rolls Out in Rajasthan, Cooperative Mobility Gets a Boost

Aligned with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of “Sahakar Se Samriddhi” and under the leadership of Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah, a major step was taken today to transform India’s mobility sector through cooperation, technology, and inclusive growth. Rajasthan Chief Minister Shri Bhajanlal Sharma launched the Bharat Taxi service at the Harish Chandra Mathur Rajasthan State Institute of Public Administration in Jaipur.

The programme in Jaipur concluded with the flagging off of a Bharat Taxi fleet of 60 cabs, 20 bikes, and 20 autos, alongside MoUs with Rajasthan Police, Saras, Jaipur Municipal Corporation, and Jaipur Metro to integrate the service with public infrastructure.

Bharat Taxi is India’s first cooperative-led ride-hailing platform where drivers, called Sarathis, are not just service providers but co-owners, shareholders, and profit participants. It has already launched in Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and most recently Rajasthan, with plans to expand to 500+ cities nationwide.

The event was attended by Union Minister of State for Cooperation Shri Murlidhar Mohol, Rajasthan Minister of State for Cooperation Shri Gautam Kumar Dak, Jaipur MP Smt Manju Sharma, Chief Secretary Shri V. Srinivas, Secretary, Ministry of Cooperation Dr. Ashish Kumar Bhutani, Principal Secretary Dr. Samit Sharma, senior officials, cooperative representatives, and Sarathis of Bharat Taxi.

Speaking at the launch, Shri Murlidhar Mohol highlighted Bharat Taxi as one of the Ministry’s new initiatives that has expanded the reach of cooperation beyond credit societies into agriculture, dairy, fisheries, insurance, exports, digital services, and now transportation. He noted that Rajasthan has historically played a pioneering role in the cooperative movement, with nearly 42,000 societies and 1.35 crore members today.

Unlike private aggregator models, Bharat Taxi empowers drivers as Sarathis—members, shareholders, and co-owners entitled to board representation and profit-sharing. With nearly 8 lakh Sarathis and 41 lakh customers nationwide, the platform completes 11,000 trips daily, directly crediting earnings to drivers’ accounts.

After Delhi, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, Rajasthan marks the next phase of Bharat Taxi’s national rollout, with plans to expand to 500 cities. Shri Mohol expressed confidence that Rajasthan will set a benchmark for safe, reliable, and cooperative-based mobility.

Chief Minister Shri Bhajanlal Sharma called Bharat Taxi a transformative initiative that advances “Sahakar Se Samriddhi” by creating dignified livelihoods and local economic opportunities. He emphasized that Sarathis are not just drivers but co-owners, with accident insurance cover, profit-sharing, and a stake in the institution’s growth. He added that Bharat Taxi will also boost Rajasthan’s tourism sector by providing last-mile connectivity to metro networks, forts, palaces, wildlife sanctuaries, and desert destinations.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Parth Jindal of JSW Group and Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber CEO, at the JSW headquarters in Mumbai last week.

Uber continues to expand access to electric mobility in India as part of its broader commitment to building a more sustainable future for urban transportation. Through partnerships with automakers, fleet operators, and ecosystem players, Uber aims to increase the availability and adoption of EVs across multiple categories on its platform.

As part of the (MoU) signed between Uber and JSW Green Mobility – a wholly-owned company of JSW Group - the two companies will deploy EV solutions that align with the price and performance expectations of the Indian market. The partnership will focus on exploring opportunities to develop and scale localised EV solutions suited for use on the Uber platform in various categories, in line with the evolving needs of India’s mobility ecosystem.

Dai Nippon Printing Co. Ltd. (DNP) inaugurated its first Research & Development (R&D) centre in India at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), marking its second overseas R&D base globally. Hyundai Motor Group (the Group), on Thursday, announced the opening of the Hyundai Center of Excellence (CoE) for future mobility technology (Hyundai CoE) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.

This initiative is establishing a joint research system to advance future mobility technologies focused on electrification and battery systems, reflecting the Group’s commitment to driving innovation tailored to the needs of Indian customers.

To recall, it was in December last year when Hyundai Motor announced partnership with three IITs – IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay and IIT Madras.

The Group has selected nine joint research projects in collaboration with IITs as part of its long-term academic-industrial cooperation framework. These projects cover key focus areas including:
  • Battery cells, systems and testing
  • Battery management systems (BMS)
  • Energy density enhancement
  • Safety
  • Durability
  • Diagnostic technologies.
The initiative also explores new materials and system components, driving forward innovation in battery design and performance.

Hyundai Motor Group officials – including Heuiwon Yang, President and Head of the R&D Division; Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India Limited; and Chang Hwan Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of the Electrification Energy Solutions Tech Unit – attended the main agreement ceremony held in New Delhi. Future Technology Research

In parallel, the Group is expanding its Future Technology Research Program, which has been in operation since 2021. Unlike the general operation methods of academic-industrial projects, the program allows university faculty members to propose their own research topics, which are then reviewed and selected by the Group.

Previously limited to domestic universities and Korean professors at overseas institutions, the program has been expanded to include foreign faculties – beginning with professors at IITs. This marks a significant step in globalizing the Group’s academic collaboration efforts.

Starting with IIT Delhi, the Hyundai CoE will expand in phases to build an India-wide network of experts, connecting leading researchers and institutions across the country.

Currently, the Group collaborates with three IIT universities (IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras), engaging around 30 professors. By December 2025, it aims to expand its reach to 10 universities in India, including non-IIT institutions, with approximately 100 professors participating.

The Group is organizing a range of initiatives to further strengthen this collaborative ecosystem. These include:

In a significant step towards promoting sustainable, eco-friendly transportation solutions, IndianOil has handed over a state-of-the-art green hydrogen fuel cell bus to the Indian Army. This landmark event was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IndianOil and the Indian Army to pioneer the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty e-mobility.

The hydrogen fuel cell bus has a seating capacity of 37 passengers and promises an impressive mileage of 250-300 km on a full 30 kg tank of hydrogen fuel. This collaboration marks the Indian Army's commitment to adopting innovative technologies that enhance operational capabilities while ensuring environmental sustainability.

IndianOil is currently operating 15 fuel cell buses in the Delhi-NCR region, accumulating a total mileage of 300,000 kilometers, which works out to 20,000 km for each bus. The project will assess the performance of these buses in the demanding climatic conditions of the region and evaluate the effectiveness, longevity, and operational reliability of fuel cell buses intended for public fleet utilization.

The Indian Army is committed to exploring and adopting innovative technologies that enhance our operational capabilities while ensuring environmental sustainability. We will be testing one of the hydrogen buses, and I must thank IndianOil for choosing the Indian Army as their partner."

Mr. S M Vaidya, Chairman, IndianOil, expressed his enthusiasm about this initiative, stating, "It is indeed a very momentous day today that a bus which is part of the green hydrogen fuel cell bus fleet will now be operated by the Indian Army. This collaboration with the Indian Army is a landmark step towards a greener and more sustainable future. IndianOil is currently operating 15 fuel cell buses in the Delhi-NCR region accumulating a total mileage of 300,000 kilometers i.e. 20000 kms on each bus”.

This initiative aims to promote hydrogen and fuel cell technology for heavy-duty e-mobility, positioning the Indian Army as a pioneer in evaluating this technology in collaboration with IndianOil, the premier energy company of India. The project will assess the performance of fuel cell electric buses for public transit in the demanding climatic conditions of the Delhi NCR region, analyzing the impact of local fuel and air quality on the performance of fuel cell systems and vehicles. Additionally, it will evaluate the effectiveness, longevity, and operational reliability of fuel cell buses intended for public fleet utilization.

This initiative marks a pivotal step in the journey towards sustainable transportation, setting a precedent for future collaborations aimed at advancing green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in India.

IIT Madras Develops India’s Most Customizable, Indigenously-Developed Electric Standing Wheelchair

On Wednesday, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) launched the NeoStand — an electric standing wheelchair that's customizable and made with indigenous technology. The wheelchair is designed to help users sit for long periods of time and then stand comfortably, reducing the risk of secondary health issues.

This electric wheelchair allows users to stop at intermediate positions using a switch, which can help with therapeutic aspects. For example, a caregiver or therapist can help the user practice standing gradually.

Launched at the IIT Madras campus on 20th March 2024 in the presence of Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, NeoStand is India’s most customizable Electric Standing Wheelchair, and has been developed indigenously to enhance the quality of life for wheelchair users.

At the touch of a button, wheelchair users can effortlessly transition from sitting to standing, opening a world of possibilities - be it engaging in eye-level conversations, reaching for a book, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee standing by a counter.

Justin Jesudas, who has had quadriplegia for 14 years, says that the ability to stand with the push of a button makes the wheelchair more inclusive and helps quadriplegics stand independently.

The journey of NeoStand from concept to reality was supported by a collaborative ecosystem. The project was sponsored by Tata Elxsi under its corporate social responsibility initiative. The development and design were spearheaded by the TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) at IIT Madras and NeoMotion, which took the lead in bringing this product to the marketplace.

The project development was led by Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan, Head, TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2), IIT Madras, who also led the development of ‘Arise,’ India’s first manual standing wheelchair, and NeoBolt, the country’s first motorized add-on for wheelchairs. This device has been commercialized and is being taken to the market through NeoMotion, an IIT Madras-incubated start-up.

For the majority of wheelchair users across the globe, the ability to stand is far-fetched. Standing is essential for better blood circulation, and digestion, preventing health issues like pressure sores and crucial for daily activities. Currently, users are often dependent on external help and some need to use orthoses. For persons with severe disabilities who have compromised upper body strength, this is a significant challenge, and a manual standing wheelchair is inadequate.

This groundbreaking initiative demonstrates the impact of translational research guided by IIT Madras faculty. NeoStand redefines the wheelchair experience, emphasizing user-centric design and empowering individuals with mobility challenges. As we navigate the complexities of accessibility and societal attitudes, let us recognize that advancements in assistive technology are not only technological imperatives but also moral imperatives.

South Korea's Hyundai Motor Company and UAE -based Mubadala Investment Company “Mubadala”, a global sovereign investor, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly explore potential business opportunities and synergies for future mobility and technologies.

The signing ceremony, which took place in Abu Dhabi, was attended by Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, and Waleed Al Mokarrab Al Muhairi, Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer of Mubadala Investment Company. This marks the beginning of a strategic collaboration that will drive progress in future mobility and clean technologies.

The agreement will allow both parties to jointly invest and share expertise, leveraging the advantages of Mubadala's investments and Hyundai Motor's expertise in various fields, including green steel production, green aluminum production and recycling, as well as advanced air mobility (AAM), and infrastructure for electric vehicles.

Additionally, Hyundai Motor and Mubadala will seek to unlock potential investment opportunities.

This collaboration capitalizes on the organic synergy between Hyundai Motor's eco-friendly and futuristic business strategies, including hydrogen, green steel, green aluminum as well as future mobility technologies, and Mubadala's investment portfolio,” said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. “Hyundai Motor will continue to pursue diverse partnerships to achieve a sustainable future and contribute to the global energy transition.”

To recall, in August this year Hyundai announced that it aims to develop technology to produce clean hydrogen from food waste as the world’s third-largest automaker aims to cement its global dominance in the fuel cell electric vehicle sector.

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have unveiled the Universal Wheel Drive System — called ‘Uni Wheel’ — at ‘Uni Wheel Tech Day’ in Seoul, Korea. This paradigm-shifting vehicle drive system will revolutionize the design of future mobility devices.

Uni Wheel is a functionally integrated wheel drive system that dramatically improves available space inside an electric vehicle (EV) by moving the main drive system components to the vacant space within the wheel hub. In doing so, Hyundai Motor and Kia have designed a completely new structure for the drive system.



In internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles power is transmitted from the engine through the transmission and to the wheels via drive shafts and constant velocity (CV) joints. In EVs, the engine and transmission are replaced by a motor and reduction gear, but the final method of transmission to the wheels is the same.

Uni Wheel opens new possibilities and enables a flat-floor configuration by moving an EV’s reduction gear inside the wheel hub, locating a compact individual motor close to each wheel, reducing the length of the drive shafts.

The system frees up significantly more interior space compared with conventional drive systems, enabling future mobility products optimized for various applications, such as Purpose Built Vehicles (PBVs).

“We are pleased to showcase innovative ideas that could become game changers in the future mobility market,” said Jongsool Park, Senior Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Technology Development of Hyundai Motor Group. “We will perfect the technology so that customers can experience mobility in a completely different and new way.”

Advancing future mobility through new technology

Recent advances in electrification, autonomous driving and connectivity technologies are transforming mobility products into living spaces. Hyundai Motor and Kia’s focus on space utilization in future vehicle architectures will further boost customer value and provide owners with richer user experiences as a result.

Uni Wheel uses a special planetary gear configuration consisting of a sun gear in the center, four pinion gears on each side and a ring gear surrounding this arrangement. Power generated by the motor is transmitted to the sun gear, which in turn engages the pinion gears to rotate the ring gear. This is connected to the wheel to drive the vehicle.

Uni Wheel’s pinion gears are connected to each other to form two linkages, and this multi-link mechanism enables Uni Wheel’s multi-axis movement to allow a wide range of suspension articulation.

A conventional drive system using a regular CV joint suffers from a decrease in efficiency and durability as the angle of drive shaft deflection increases when travelling over bumpy, undulating surfaces. Uni Wheel can transmit power with almost no change to efficiency regardless of wheel movement, ensuring high durability and ride comfort.

When combined with electronic air suspension that can adjust ride height according to the driving situation, this can be increased to stabilize the vehicle on rough roads, or decreased for high-speed driving to improve power and stability.

By moving the reduction gear to the wheel hub, Uni Wheel’s high reduction ratio delivers a significant torque output and allows for a more compact electric motor. With independent control of up to four efficient electric drive units, Uni Wheel also allows for unprecedented levels of torque vectoring to boost dynamic ability and deliver high levels of steering and driving stability.

More efficiency, more interior space

The Uni Wheel concept frees up space within a vehicle that was previously unavailable to users. By relocating many components of the drive system to the wheel hub and downsizing the electric motor with no impact on performance, the extra space made available within the vehicle body can be utilized as additional cargo room, such as a larger trunk or a ‘frunk’.

It’s also possible to move away from conventional seating arrangements designed around the driver, creating new interior layouts and designs for the era of fully autonomous driving. Utilizing this space to improve battery capacity can also improve driving range, meaning users can achieve the range of a large EV without the physical size of the vehicle growing.

The developments Uni Wheel allows will also significantly increase passenger space. EV batteries are conventionally located low down in a vehicle’s body, which requires a raised ride height, often reducing passenger space by the volume of the battery. However, Uni Wheel optimizes battery packaging, with the loss of passenger space minimized.

This will be a valuable feature for PBVs, which need to maximize interior space by offering a low, flat-floor design. The flat-floor platform enabled by Uni Wheel allows for strong flexibility and scalability when it comes to PBVs, enabling the design of various body types depending on the intended use case.

Uni Wheel is highly flexible and easily adaptable to all types of EVs, including regular passenger and high-performance EVs, as the system can implement the same powertrain and reduction gear functions required for conventional EVs.

In addition to vehicles of various sizes, Uni Wheel can also be applied to other types of mobility devices, such as wheelchairs, bicycles and delivery robots. Depending on the requirements of these different forms of mobility, Uni Wheel can be scaled to work with wheel sizes as small as 4 inches and as large as 25 inches or more. In addition, Uni Wheel’s ability to move the rotation axis of the wheel makes it possible to create forms of personal mobility that can climb stairs as smoothly as an escalator.

Hyundai Motor and Kia are continuously verifying the stability, efficiency, and durability of Uni Wheel through various tests to perfect its development and will continue efforts to improve its efficiency by adjusting the reduction gear ratio, and upgrading the lubrication and cooling system.

Hyundai Motor and Kia have applied for and registered eight patents related to Uni Wheel in South Korea as well as the United States.
