With this milestone, India becomes the first nation globally to attempt hydrogen propulsion at such high horsepower, far surpassing the earlier global benchmark of 1,600 HP for hydrogen rail systems. Importantly, Concord’s propulsion system is not a laboratory prototype, but a commercially deployable solution designed for freight scale operations, targeting to demonstrate hydrogen’s real-world viability for heavy-duty rail transport.

Maruti Suzuki dispatched 5.18 lakh vehicles through Indian Railways in FY 2024-25, marking its highest-ever rail dispatches. This accounts for about one-fourth of the company's total vehicle dispatches for the fiscal year.

The automaker has been steadily increasing its reliance on rail transport, citing environmental benefits such as avoiding over 1.8 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions and saving more than 630 lakh liters of fuel. Since FY 2014-15, Maruti Suzuki has cumulatively dispatched around 24 lakh vehicles via rail.

Looking ahead, the company aims to increase the share of vehicle dispatches through railways to 35% by FY 2030-31. This shift aligns with its broader sustainability goals and efforts to reduce carbon emissions in logistics.

Rail transport produces significantly less CO₂ per ton-kilometer compared to road transport. In Europe, rail accounts for only 0.6% of diesel emissions and less than 2% of total transport emissions, making it one of the cleanest freight options.

Speaking on the milestone, Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited said, “Reducing carbon emissions is a top priority for us, both in our products and in our operations. Maruti Suzuki was the first company in India to obtain an Automobile-Freight-Train-Operator license, in 2013. Since then, we have dispatched nearly 24 lakh vehicles through rail mode. By FY 2030-31, we plan to increase the share of vehicle dispatches through railways to 35%.

Notably, trains can move large volumes of goods with far less energy consumption than trucks. Electrified rail systems further reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Since FY 2014-15, Maruti Suzuki vehicle dispatches through railways have grown by nearly 8 times. In 2024, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first automobile in-plant railway siding at the Gujarat manufacturing facility of the Company. Currently, Maruti Suzuki operates over 40 flexi deck rakes, each with a capacity of carrying around 300 vehicles per trip.

It's an interesting move in India's automotive supply chain that gradually shifting toward rail-based logistics.

Starting March 12, Swiggy will deliver to passengers travelling via Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada

The service is likely to expand to over 50 stations in the coming weeks

Swiggy, India’s leading online food ordering and delivery platform, and the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) have signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) to deliver pre-ordered food on trains. The MoU was exchanged between Mr Sanjay Kumar Jain, Chairman and Managing Director, IRCTC and Mr Rohit Kapoor, CEO, Swiggy Food Marketplace, in the presence of senior officials from both organisations.

As part of the MoU, Swiggy will deliver food from its extensive restaurant network to passengers on the Indian railways starting with Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. The service is likely to expand to 59 additional city stations in the coming weeks.

Speaking about partnership, Mr Sanjay Kumar Jain, Chairman and Managing Director, IRCTC, said, “At IRCTC our focus has always been to explore new ways to make train journeys comfortable and convenient for the billions of passengers aboard the Indian railways every year. This partnership with Swiggy will bring more convenience and food options to our passengers, making their journeys more memorable.”

In the first phase, we are starting with deliveries on stations of Bengaluru, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Bhubaneswar. Passengers can avail pre-ordered food services via Swiggy by following the below steps:

  • Select the preferred station for food delivery
  • Browse through an extensive list of restaurants on Swiggy
  • Choose a restaurant that is delivering at the specified location and time
The food delivered to passengers will be packed in insulated Swiggy bags to keep the meal warm and fresh. Swiggy’s delivery partner would reach the selected platform X mins before delivery, hand over the food to the customer and mark the food delivered. To ensure smooth operations, effective issue resolution and maximum comfort for the passengers, Swiggy’s support agents will be trained in resolution process, gratification & cancellation policies. The support agents will also be equipped to connect with restaurants and delivery partners based on the order status and the nature of the customer issue.

Siemens Limited  has provided rail electrification technologies for a 42-kilometer-long stretch, including the longest rail tunnel (12.8-kilometers) at Pir Panjal range, on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, announced the German technology company in an official press release.

The Electrification project is part of the Jammu-Udhampur-Katra-Quazigund-Baramulla Railway line of the Indian Railways, the largest construction of mountain railway line since India’s independence, with a length of 345 kilometers and at a height of approximately 1,700 meters above sea level.

The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is a 272-kilometer railway project that connects the Kashmir valley with the Indian Railways network. The project aims to connect remote Himalayan areas with the rest of India.

Siemens Limited’s scope included the design, engineering, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of 25kV overhead equipment and associated works.

The Railway Strategic Business Group of L&T Construction has secured a Mega Contract from an authorised Japanese agency to construct 508 Route Km of High-Speed Electrification System Works (Package No: EW 1) for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) Project, popularly referred to as the Bullet Train Project.

According to the company’s classification of projects, the value of the order is between 10,000 to 15,000 crore INR.

The scope of this package includes Design, Manufacture, Supply, Construction, Installation, Testing and Commissioning of 2 x 25 kV Power Supply Electrification System including Traction Substations, High-Speed Overhead Equipment and MV/LV Power Distribution Equipment Works on Design-Build Lump Sum Price basis.

It is a first of its kind railway electrification project for India involving the implementation of Japanese Shinkansen High Speed Electrification Technology with sophisticated equipment including Heavy Compound Catenary System, Change Over Switches, etc.

Upon completion, this electrification system will enable trains to travel at up to 320 KMPH speed.

The project is being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and is being implemented by an authorised Japanese agency acting for and on behalf of the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL).

1200 Electric Locomotives will be Manufactured over a Period of 11 Years

Indian Railways has issued the Letter of Award (LoA) for Manufacturing and Maintenance of 9000 HP Electric Freight Locomotives to Siemens, India.

As a technology partner, Siemens will provide training to Railway Staff at Dahod for manufacturing the 9000 HP locomotives and at four depots at Vishakhapatnam, Raipur, Kharagpur and Pune for maintenance of the locomotives over the design life of 35 years.

Railways factory at Dahod, Gujarat, will manufacture 1200 high horse power (9000 HP) electric locomotives over a period of 11 years. It would entail manufacturing of 1200 locomotives and maintenance of these locomotives for 35 years.

The estimated value of contract is about INR 26000 Crore (about 3.2 Billion USD), excluding taxes and price variation.

Agreement with Siemens India will be signed within 30 days of issue of LoA. The proto-type locomotives are to be delivered in the coming two years.

Dahod Unit will be fully constructed for manufacturing these locomotives within a period of two years. Siemens, selected as technological partner, will manufacture these locomotives at Dahod and maintain these locomotives at four maintenance depots - Vishakhapatnam, Raipur, Kharagpur, Pune for a period of 35 years utilising Railway’s Manpower.

These 9000 HP locomotives will be the future workhorse for freight operation on Indian Railways. These locomotives are planned for use primarily on Western DFC and on graded sections of Railways for hauling container freight trains in double stack configuration of 4500 Tonnes at 75 kmph at 1 in 200 gradient and improve the average speed of such trains to around 50-60 kmph over the existing 20-25 kmph.

The quantum jump in the operating parameters will lead to increase in the throughput and also enhance line capacity. These locomotives, equipped with state of the art IGBT based propulsion technology, will provide savings in energy consumption due to regenerative braking technology.

Suitable economic drivers will ensure complete indigenization of the manufacturing which in turn will lead to development of ancillary manufacturing units making it a true ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The project will also lead to development of the Dahod region and generate employment. Dahod is a city on the banks of the Dudhimati River in Dahod District in the State of Gujarat.

On Friday, Ministry of Railways has released an innovation policy, according to which Indian Railways will invest in startups, individual innovators and R&D institutions in order to co-develop innovative products and solutions with startups & entrepreneurs, that address issues of Indian Railways while promoting Innovation Culture in the country for co-creation and co-innovation in the railway sector.

On funding the eligible startups, the policy document says - "Considering the major constraint of capital inadequacy in Startup ecosystem, primarily in the seed and “Proof of Concept” developmental stage, this policy aims at providing necessary seed fund support, of up to Rs. 1.5 Cr (on matching contribution basis), to the Startups showing capability, intent and promise to produce functional prototypes, based on new innovative concepts, for potential use on Indian Railways.

This policy document lays down a broad framework for engagement of Ministry of Railways with Innovators for development of technology, products and need based solutions for Indian Railways.

Under this policy, funding scheme for startups/innovators will be on cost sharing basis in equal proportion i.e. 50:50 by Indian Railways and Innovator. Maximum amount of grant of up to Rs. 1.5 Crore can be given per innovator.
 
"Even for cases where the total cost of project exceeds Rs 3.0 Cr, the funding from Indian Railways shall be limited to a maximum of Rs. 1.5 Cr only. The exact quantum of grant and installments for each Innovator shall be decided by the PEC ((Proposal Evaluation Committee), based on its evaluation," mentions the policy.

Complete process, from initiation to completion, will be dealt online through a dedicated Indian Railway Innovation Portal. The innovators can apply through a dedicated Innovation Portal, which is likely to be functional by the end of this month, and once chosen for the grant, its disbursement shall be linked to pre-decided milestones (proposed stages during project execution). The project execution stages should be divided in a minimum of 4 (Four) milestones and maximum amount of disbursement at any milestone shall not exceed Rs. 25 lacs.

Under this policy, the ownership of IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) generated under the project shall be owned exclusively by the Innovator. However, it can be extended to include any associates as joint owners only after obtaining prior approval from Railway Board (E&R Directorate).

To recall, Indian Railways has earlier explored the feasibility of retrofitting the trains (that presently run o­n diesel) with hydrogen fuel and for same it invited bids for "hydrogen fuel cell-based technology" for retrofitting the existing Diesel units, in November last year.

Collaboration/co-development of govt.-owned units and private firms and startups is gaining momentum of-late. While Indian space agency ISRO has already working with private companies and startups for various space activities. Indian Oil Corporation, (IOC) has recently signed a binding term sheet with two private firms -- Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and ReNew Power (ReNew) -- to set up a Joint Venture (JV) company that will develop the green hydrogen sector in India.

Indian Railways (IR) is exploring the feasibility of retrofitting the trains (that presently run o­n diesel) with hydrogen fuel and for same it has invited bids for "hydrogen fuel cell-based technology" for retrofitting the existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) and will be test it out in 89 km Sonipat-Jind section of Northern Railway.

The bids have been invited by Indian Railways Organization of Alternate Fuel (IROAF), Green Fuel vertical of IR. The bidding date for hydrogen fuel cell-based DEMU rake will start o­n September 21, 2021, and the closing date will be October 5, 2021.

Initially, two DEMU rakes will be converted, and later two-hybrid narrow gauge locomotives will be converted based o­n hydrogen fuel cell power movement. After conversion, the train will run o­n hydrogen fuel, the greenest mode of transport as hydrogen can be generated by electrolysing the water from solar energy. 

The retrofitting of diesel-powered Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) and converting it into hydrogen fuel-powered train set will not o­nly save the cost to the tune of Rs 2.3 crore annually by converting from diesel to hydrogen, but also save the carbon footprint (NO2) of 11.12-kilo tons per annum and particulate matter of 0.72-kilotonnes per annum.

This initiative is part of the National Hydrogen Energy Mission to launch and promote the concept of Hydrogen Mobility in India. Rs.8 crore has been allocated for the project in 2021-22.

Earlier in June, to use hydrogen as an alternative fuel researchers from the IIT Bombay have devised an economical method for extracting hydrogen from water.

Hydrogen fuel cell-based technology is part of  "Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Batteries” and "National Hydrogen Mission" --- the two flagship programs of the Government of India to meet out the targets of reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emission under Paris Climate Agreement 2015 and "Mission Net Zero Carbon Emission Railway" by 2030.

Last month, NTPC too had invited a tender for setting up India’s first Green Hydrogen Fuelling Station in Leh, Ladakh. In February this year, Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, announced that NTPC is planning to start a premium hydrogen fuel bus service on Delhi to Jaipur route.

Automated Train Toilet Sewerage Disposal System - A Cost-effective Alternative To Bio-toilets

An automated technology for collection of toilet waste which is easy to maintain and seven times cheaper alternative to the bio-toilets, developed by an Indian scientist, can be used to maintain the toilet system of the Indian Railways.

Existing Bio toilets use anaerobic bacteria for converting human waste to gas, but that bacteria can’t decompose plastic and cloth materials dumped into toilets by passengers. Hence maintenance and removing of such non decomposed materials inside the tank is difficult.

The technology developed by Dr. R.V. Krishnaiah from Chebrolu Engineering Collegeisan automated system for collection of toilet waste from running trains and segregation of different materials and processing into usable things.

The Front View of the System

The technology developed with support from the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies programme of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), aligned with the 'Make in India' initiative has been granted five National patents and is in the testing phase.

The automated system consists of three simple steps -- the septic tank (which is placed under the track, i.e., train line) top cover gets opened when train approaches to the septic tank place by using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sensor and reader placed at Engine and septic tank position respectively, sewerage material in toilet tanks is dropped into the septic tank when they are mutually synchronized, and finally the septic tank cover gets closed when train departs away from it.

The collected sewerage material from train toilets is segregated such that human waste is stored in one tank, and other materials such as plastic materials, cloth materials, and so on are stored in another tank. The human waste is further processed separately to convert into usable material. The plastic and cloth materials are processed separately.

This technology has been developed targeting the Indian Railways specifically with the aim of cost reduction and to obviate the necessity of time-consuming anaerobic bacteria generation. In contrast with Bio toilets which cost one lakh per unit, the new technology brings down the cost to Fifteen thousand rupees only. Dr. R.V. Krishnaiah has tied up with MTE Industries for further upscale of this technology.

IRFC primarily involved in financing the acquisition of rolling stock assets, leasing of railway infrastructure assets, and lending to entities under the Railway Ministry. The term "rolling stock" is a generic term that is used in the railroad industry to denote anything on rail wheels. The term includes locomotives, freight cars, flat cars, and other vehicles that use steel wheels on railroad tracks.

The Rs 4,633.4 crore ( about US $634 million) initial public offer (IPO) has become the first public issue for the calendar year 2021.

The price band of the issue, being in the range of Rs 25-26 per share is of the face value of Rs 10 each. The three-day public issue will close on January 20, 2021. 

The initial public offering of up to 1,78,20,69,000 equity shares consists of a fresh issue of 1,18,80,46,000 equity shares and an offer for sale of 59,40,23,000 equity shares by the government.

The bids for the issue can be made for a minimum of 575 equity shares and in multiples afterward. The shares are proposed to be listed on BSE and NSE. The IRFC IPO listing date is not yet announced. 

The Indian Railway Finance Corporation was incorporated in 1986 and is a public-sector enterprise, wholly owned by the central government.

Being the financing arm of Indian Railways, IRFC is responsible to mobilise funds from domestic or overseas market for the Railway Ministry, required to procure rolling stock assets such as wagons, trucks, electric multiple units, locomotives, coaches, along with its improvement, expansion, as well as assets management.

The primary objective of IRFC is to meet the predominant portion of extra-budgetary resources requirement of the Indian Railways through market borrowings at the most competitive rates and terms.

Railways Develops Low-Cost Ventilator 'Jeevan', Seeks ICMR Approval

The Indian Railways has developed a low-cost ventilator, Jeevan, at its Kapurthala Rail Coach Factory that could save thousands of lives at a time the country is grappling with a shortage of the medical equipment in its fight against coronavirus.

The prototype is now awaiting ICMR clearance to go into production, the Railways said.

"It will cost around Rs 10,000 without the compressor. Once we have the ICMR approval, if we have all the materials, we will be able to produce 100 such ventilators a day," Ravinder Gupta, general manager of the RCF and the brain behind Jeevan, told PTI.

"Overall, the cost will still be a fraction of what regular ventilators cost," he said.

A ventilator is a device used to pump air and oxygen into the lungs, and it can be critical for a patient with severe COVID-19 infection which can lead to lung failure.

India might need anywhere between 110,000-220,000 ventilators by May 15 in the worst-case scenario. The number of ventilators today available in the country is a maximum of 57,000 and come with a cost of Rs 5-Rs 15 lakh, according to a Brookings report.

Gupta said the heart of the device is the compressed air container to work the Ambu bag with air without any moving parts like servo motor or piston or link mechanism. It has a microprocessor-based controller and the circuit has been designed by the RCF team.

A valve has been installed to regulate breathing of the patient and the device can be optimized to more compact size. The machine is a silent operator, according to the Railways.

Gupta said the prototype has been made from materials he found in the factory — the portable compressor is made from an air cooling machine, the body from coach components, the argon flow metre is taken from a laser welding machine and the microprocessor from the coach information system.

The 11-member team behind Jeevan needed to source only two parts — a regulator valve and a microprocessor — from vendors in Delhi and Noida. The RCF used emergency transit services to get the two components by road and train during the lockdown.

The machine, Gupta said, provides control on breathing rate, expiratory ratio, and tidal volume - all key parameters for any ventilator and has a microprocessor-based controlling system.

"Today we have made some final tests and now we have a fully functional emergency ventilator which we have manufactured at one-third the cost of ventilators in the market," said the 1984-batch mechanical engineering officer of the Railways.

"Even if we add a few additional indicators, the cost will not rise over Rs 30,000. Also, in this machine, all the aspects can be independently controlled."

According to the Health Ministry, the number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases in the country climbed to 3,374 on Sunday while the death toll rose to 79.

Of them, the number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 3,030, it said.
