Uber Cuts 3,300 Jobs, Orders Remaining 29,000 Staff Back to Office Under Strict Hybrid Policy

Uber Cuts 3,300 Jobs, Orders Remaining 29,000 Staff Back to Office Under Strict Hybrid Policy

Uber’s layoff memo not only cut about 3,300 jobs but also announced a major shift in workplace policy: nearly all of the remaining 29,000 employees must relocate to offices, with fully remote roles capped at just 1% of the workforce. The company is enforcing a strict three‑day‑a‑week hybrid model and tying team locations to designated hubs.

Key Takeaways from Uber’s Memo

  • Layoffs: About 10% of corporate staff (≈3,300 employees) were cut, mainly in management and coordination roles.
  • Remote work cap: Only ~1% of employees will remain fully remote, a sharp reduction from pandemic-era flexibility.
  • Hybrid policy: All employees must work at least three days per week in the office, with attendance tracked.
  • Relocation requirement: Remote staff are asked to move near designated offices; the memo frames this as “jobs now come with a postcode.”
  • Hub strategy:
    • Global teams → New York & San Francisco
    • Regional teams → Regional hubs
    • Local teams → Country hubs
    • Engineering → Tech hubs

Why Uber Is Making This Change

  • Collaboration focus: CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized that “sitting together and solving problems in person works better” than remote alternatives.
  • Simplification: The restructuring reduces management layers and “micro-teams” to streamline decision-making.
  • Location clarity: By concentrating teams in hubs, Uber aims to reduce overlap and improve accountability.

Impact on Employees

  • Relocation stress: Staff in smaller offices face uncertainty about both job security and whether they must move cities.
  • Early-career employees: Specifically singled out as needing in-person mentorship, discouraging isolated remote work.
  • Compliance enforcement: Unlike many companies with flexible hybrid policies, Uber will actively monitor attendance.

Risks & Trade-offs

  • Employee morale: Forced relocations may lead to attrition, especially among workers who value flexibility.
  • Talent pool shrinkage: Limiting remote roles could reduce Uber’s ability to hire globally.
  • Operational clarity vs. disruption: While the hub model simplifies coordination, it disrupts employees’ personal lives and may increase costs.

Uber Partners with Indian Railways for First-Ever Station Integrations at Ahmedabad and Howrah

Uber Partners with Indian Railways for First-Ever Station Integrations at Ahmedabad and Howrah

Uber, India’s leading ride-hailing platform, today announced its partnership with Indian Railways at Ahmedabad Railways Station and Howrah Railway Station, marking the first-ever railway station integrations by a ride-haling platform in India.

This collaboration aims to improve passenger connectivity at major transportation hubs, and marks a significant step in Uber’s ongoing commitment to improving multimodal mobility and simplifying how people get to and from the railway stations.

Ranked as the 7th largest station in India, Ahmedabad Railway Station currently serves over 1.2 lakh passengers daily, with capacity projected to grow to over 3 lakh passengers per day by 2053. Howrah Railway Station, India's largest and a vital entry point to Eastern India, serves over 10 lakh passengers daily, making it one of the country's busiest transportation hubs. These collaborations mark Uber’s first-ever assisted operations at railway stations in India, setting a new benchmark for integrated urban mobility.

Shiva Shailendran, Director of Consumer Growth & Categories at Uber India and South Asia, commented on the partnership, “Our exclusive collaboration with Indian Railways at Ahmedabad and Howrah Railway Stations is a step forward in strengthening urban mobility infrastructure and ensuring reliable connectivity for millions of travellers. By integrating Uber’s technology with key public transport hubs, we are working towards building a seamless, multimodal transportation ecosystem that simplifies how people move across cities.”

To enhance passenger experience, Uber operates from dedicated parking areas connected directly to station infrastructure, ensuring smooth access for riders and drivers alike. In Ahmedabad, Uber has a dedicated parking area on an elevated section linked to the station’s main foot-over bridge, while in Howrah, Uber has established designated kiosks to manage the high volume of railway passenger traffic. Both locations feature on-ground teams and rider support to assist throughout the journey.

With these partnerships, Uber drivers in both these cities will benefit from increased trip opportunities at the stations, enhancing their overall earning potential. By combining well-planned infrastructure with real-time assistance, Uber aims to offer a convenient, stress-free, and reliable mobility experience for travellers.

Uber India Pilots In-App Digital Tasks for Drivers, Expanding Income Streams Beyond Rides

Uber India Pilots In-App Digital Tasks for Drivers, Expanding Income Streams Beyond Rides

Uber has introduced a new pilot program in India that allows its driver partners to earn money by completing digital tasks directly within the Uber app. Piloted across 12 cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, as well as smaller markets like Pune, Jaipur, Bhopal, and Vizag, the initiative aims to expand drivers’ earning options beyond ridesharing.

Drivers can now earn extra by completing micro tasks on the Uber app, like tagging objects in photos, for the company’s data-labelling platform, Uber AI Solutions, in addition to tasks like classifying short text, counting objects, and digitizing receipts, all key components of building artificial intelligence models.

Until now, such work was usually outsourced to independent contractors outside the Uber ecosystem. By bringing it into the driver app, Uber is offering drivers an additional stream of income, especially during downtimes when ride demand is low.

“This pilot is about giving drivers more choice, flexibility, and ways to earn,” said Megha Yethadka, Global Head, Uber AI Solutions. “Drivers can face downtime at certain times of the day, and digital tasks offer a way to make that time productive. Early engagement has been strong, with many thousands of tasks already completed.”

Uber AI Solutions works with global companies to deliver services like data labelling, localisation, and product testing which are the building blocks of high-performing AI systems. If successful, the India pilot may become a template for similar initiatives worldwide, giving Uber’s vast network of drivers and delivery partners a role in the fast-growing AI economy.

Uber’s India Tech Team Boosts Platform Safety, Clocks in More Trips and Orders

Uber’s India Tech Team Boosts Platform Safety, Clocks in More Trips and Orders

New feature helps add 3.5 million trips and orders in 2023

Uber today said its India-based Risk Product and Engineering team has enhanced its state-of-the-art framework to verify genuine users on the Uber platform without compromising on their app experience.

The primary goal of the framework is to enhance platform security by proactively identifying and stopping potentially malicious activity, all while ensuring that genuine users are not inconvenienced. Oftentimes, genuine users find themselves unintentionally blocked by these security measures, even though the intention is to make the platform safer for them.

The ‘challenge framework’, based on a rule engine, helps identify users with malicious intent swiftly, thereby increasing security on the platform for millions of people transacting on it by the day. The challenges are self-resolvable verification processes taken while a user tries to transact on the platform - book a trip or place an order. Through these simple challenges, Uber has been able to keep fraudulent activities at bay while letting genuine users have a seamless trip or order experience.

The intervention resulted in an incremental 3.5 million trips and orders within 2023, by allowing over 600,000 riders, eaters and merchants to get their accounts unblocked through simple challenges.

Keeping challenges easy, in the form of card scans, address verification, verifying CVV codes, makes sure genuine users don’t get impacted by harsher actions such as account bans even as malicious booking attempts are blocked. Additionally, this team also enriched the framework to present contextual information to users along with challenges and other self-resolvable options enabling them to proceed with their trip or order. To strengthen this framework further, the team also built feedback loops as a way to continuously learn and improve from these user interactions.

Commenting on the framework, Deepak Kumar, Head of Risk Engineering, Uber India, said, “Our intent is to find the perfect balance between making the platform safer and improving the trip or order experience for all our genuine users across the world, by making the app easier to use. The latest upgrades to the engine made by the India teams do exactly that, and are a fine example of the immense tech talent housed here.”

In order to roll out these challenges across geographies, Uber ran an A/B testing exercise to replace harsher actions (example: denying a trip or order) with easy ‘challenges’ to help users verify their payment methods, and continue to use the platform. The aim of this exercise was to reduce the complications for users when it comes to verifying their transactions, and measure the increase in engagement as a result. These experiments resulted in an improved app experience, which translated into a rise in trips/orders for over 50% for the users who were part of the experiment.

This verification feature is now being rolled out to Uber users globally, including riders, eaters, merchants and earners.

The development process was worked on by a team of engineers, data scientists, product and program managers, all based out of India. India houses the two largest tech centers for Uber outside the US, and is responsible for some of the leading global innovations in ridesharing, freight and food delivery.

Uber’s mission is to create opportunity through movement. We started in 2010 to solve a simple problem: how do you get access to a ride at the touch of a button? More than 10 billion trips later, we're building products to get people closer to where they want to be. By changing how people, food, and things move through cities, Uber is a platform that opens up the world to new possibilities.

Uber Launches Report on Future of Cities and Shared Mobility

Uber Launches Report on Future of Cities and Shared Mobility
  • Leapfrog private car ownership, rethink parking and street design for sustainability
  • Shift to sustainable transport options can improve mobility access for everyone
  • Public-private collaboration holds the key to smart mobility
Uber today launched a report titled ‘Future of Cities & Shared Mobility in India’ that analyzes transportation trends in Urban India and recommends changes required for a sustainable future. Commissioned by Uber, and compiled by WXY Studio, a New York-based organization specializing in urban design & planning, the report’s findings and recommendations focus on the need to support shared mobility, move people more efficiently and affordably, and curb the country’s growing demand for private car ownership.

The report was presented today in the national capital to Hon'ble Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Puri, by the Uber India & South Asia - President, Prabhjeet Singh. As per the report, India has an opportunity to leapfrog an era of auto dependency by fast-tracking innovative mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) solutions and rethinking parking policies and street design. This will help create a new paradigm for smart, equitable development in a rapidly urbanized setting and help India improve mobility access without further increasing private vehicles on roads.

Sharing his views, Prabhjeet Singh, President, Uber India & South Asia, said: ”At Uber, we are committed to building a sustainable future and enabling more liveable cities for all. This report outlines the role that ride-sharing platforms like ours can play in reducing traffic congestion and pollution. With smart planning, better first- and last-mile connectivity to an improved public transport system, and a stronger ecosystem encouraging transition to sustainable mobility, India can emerge stronger and compete with any city in the world.”

As per the report findings, increased demand for private car ownership, accelerated by a growing middle class and safety concerns during COVID-19, poses a challenge to India’s sustainable mobility future. This trend can be checked by integrated transport and land use policies. By reimagining Indian roads by reallocating space from cars to non-motorized transport (NMT) and sustainable modes, and limiting free parking, cities can move closer to their sustainability goals. The expansion in access to walking, biking, reliable public transport, on-demand mobility and shared services, can enable governments to curb the growth of personal four-wheeled vehicles and improve personal mobility for all. This shift will also have a positive impact on mobility among Indians who do not own a vehicle. The report also highlights the role of stronger public-private collaboration to sustainable mobility by improving public transport and access to shared mobility.

As per recommendations to policymakers, city planners, and regulators, to improve shared mobility included in the report, the Unified Transport Bodies (UTBs) that exist across cities can be empowered to play the role of multimodal mobility managers that can better integrate shared mobility into existing transportation systems. Further, improving areas around public transport stations by requiring developers to make investments in public spaces and incentivizing the presence of neighborhood amenities in and around stations, will help improve first/last mile connectivity, and make travel safer. City planners should partner with shared mobility companies to connect underserved areas, including newly developed edge cities, and mandate major new developments to create a transport demand management plan to connect with existing networks. Lastly, as India continues to encourage transition to sustainable mobility, government subsidies for EVs should apply to more vehicles and shared fleets, while targeting lower-income households.

This report synthesizes findings from a literature review, surveys and interviews with Indian transportation practitioners and experts, and an analysis of Uber’s Rides data in four case study cities. As per surveys conducted by WXY Studio, transportation experts in India view Uber as playing an important role in the mobility ecosystem in India by improving first- and last-mile connectivity and enabling better coordination with transport operators.

US-based space agency NASA has began flight testing with cab aggregator Uber -funded electric aircraft company Joby Aviation (Joby). Tagged as a Unicorn company, Joby Aviation is an aerospace transportation company developing electric aircrafts. Uber Technologies, Inc has invested a total of $125 million in Joby.

NASA has began testing Joby’s all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft as part of the space agency’s Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) National Campaign, announced NASA.

Joby's aircraft has a maximum range of 150 miles on a single charge, can transport a pilot and four passengers at speeds of up to 200 mph.

This testing runs through Friday, Sept.10, at Joby’s Electric Flight Base located in California. This is the first time NASA will test an eVTOL aircraft as part of the campaign.

"In the future, eVTOL aircraft could serve as air taxis for those in cities and surrounding areas around the country, adding another mode of transportation for moving people and goods.", said NASA.

In this round of testing, NASA will collect data from Joby’s eVTOL aircraft, which is intended to serve as a commercial passenger service in the future. Analyzing that data readies the AAM National Campaign to execute the first set of campaign tests, known as NC-1, slated for 2022, with more complex flight scenarios and other industry vehicles.

As the Joby aircraft flies planned test scenarios, the NASA team will collect information about how the vehicle moves, how the vehicle sounds, and how the vehicle communicates with controllers.

The team will deploy the mobile acoustics facility and construct an array of more than 50 microphones to measure the acoustic profile of Joby’s aircraft in different phases of flight.

NASA has also partnered with an another U.S. startup called Elroy Air, which is developing the world's first autonomous drone capable of delivering 300 to 500 pounds (227 Kg) of cargo over a 300-mile (483 Km) range, with no need for airport or electric charging station.

Coming back to Uber connection with Joby, Uber invested $75 million in Joby, in december last year, as part of a broader transaction involving the acquisition of Uber's the aerial ride-hailing division, Uber Elevate, by Joby Aviation and an expanded partnership between the two parent companies.

On August 11, Joby Aviation becomes first U.S.-based eVTOL company listed on public market to begin trading on NYSE.

Uber, Rivian, JetBlue, Cabify, and Boom Supersonic Sign The Climate Pledge

18 companies have now joined The Climate Pledge, a commitment co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement 10 years early

New signatories are implementing real, science-based, high-impact changes to their businesses, including deploying renewable energy, investing in sustainable buildings, and mobilizing supply chains to reach net-zero carbon by 2040

Today, during Web Summit 2020, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Global Optimism announced that Boom Supersonic, Cabify, JetBlue, Rivian, and Uberhave joined The Climate Pledge, a commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2040—a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement’s goal of 2050.

Signatories to The Climate Pledge agree to:

  • Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis;
  • Implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon-emission elimination strategies;
  • Neutralize any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially beneficial offsets to achieve net-zero annual carbon emissions by 2040.

“By signing The Climate Pledge, companies around the world are making a bold commitment to help protect our planet from the devastating impacts of climate change,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO. “The transportation sector plays a critical role in accelerating our carbon reduction goals, and we welcome Boom, Cabify, JetBlue, Rivian, and Uber as they join us on the journey to net-zero carbon by 2040. The 18 companies who have signed The Climate Pledge so far are demonstrating leadership in the vital transition to a low-carbon economy that will help preserve the environment for future generations."

Boom is redefining commercial flight by bringing supersonic travel back to the skies. Boom’s historic airliner, Overture, is designed to industry-leading standards of speed, safety, and sustainability. In February 2020, the company announced that the test program for its XB-1 demonstrator will be carbon neutral, through the use of sustainable aviation fuels and high-quality, vetted carbon offsetting. Boom has also committed to making Overture a net-zero carbon aircraft in development, testing, and operation, and is a member of several organizations working to accelerate the adoption and supply of sustainable aviation fuels for the airline industry. In achieving its vision of making the world more accessible, Boom views speed and sustainability as compatible goals.

“In building the world’s fastest airliner, Boom is taking an all-encompassing approach to sustainability. Having made sustainability a company priority from day one, we have been able to build best practices of environmental protection into our programs since the beginning,” said Blake Scholl, Boom founder and CEO. “We are thrilled to join The Climate Pledge and to ensure that speed and sustainability are compatible with one another."

Cabify is the first and only urban mobility app in Europe and Latin America to be carbon neutral by offsetting 100% of all the carbon emissions that it generates – from its corporate operations and for every ride booked through the app. Cabify is also closely measuring and reducing emissions for its corporate activity and aiming to electrify its transportation fleet in Spain and Latin America—by 2025 and 2030, respectively—to reduce its carbon emissions. The company is focused on increasing environmental protections and promoting renewable energies by working on large-scale efforts in Chile, Peru and Brazil using solutions like blockchain technology for carbon offsetting.

“Efficient urban mobility is key in the fight against climate change,” said Juan de Antonio, Cabify founder and CEO. “Cabify wants to be part of the solution, and that’s why for the third year in a row we have committed to offsetting the carbon emissions that our riders and operations generate while we continue to support the electrification of the fleets we work with. We’re pleased to join The Climate Pledge to continue to be transparent about our sustainability journey.”

JetBlue is the first airline to join The Climate Pledge, and this reaffirms the company’s commitment to taking measurable steps towards reducing its climate impact. In July 2020, JetBlue became the first and only U.S. airline to achieve carbon neutrality for all domestic flights. It now expects to ramp up to over 7 million metric tons of CO2 emissions offset each year—the annual equivalent of removing more than 1.5 million passenger vehicles from the road. JetBlue views carbon offsetting as a bridge as the airline continues to ramp up lower-carbon technologies, such as sustainable aviation fuels, and build more fuel-efficient aircraft and operations. JetBlue began flying regularly out of San Francisco International Airport in July 2020 using a type of a sustainable aviation fuel, which enables up to an 80 percent reduction in CO2 emissions before being blended with traditional jet fuel.

“Air travel connects people and cultures, and supports a global economy. Our commitment to sustainability has become even more important as we prepare our business for a new climate reality,” said Robin Hayes, JetBlue CEO. “We are proud to join The Climate Pledge and join a community of like-minded organizations dedicated to reaching net zero-carbon by 2040. The climate crisis remains one of the biggest threats facing our industry. Our planet is physically changing, as are the expectations of our customers, crewmembers, and investors. Now is the time to rebuild operations in more sustainable ways, such as adopting sustainable aviation fuel and setting clear strategies to reduce net aviation CO2 emissions."

Rivian is launching a range of adventure-oriented vehicles, as well as delivery vans specifically for Amazon last-mile delivery applications. The company’s launch products, the R1T and R1S, deliver a unique combination of performance, off-road capability and utility. These vehicles use the company’s flexible skateboard platform and will be produced at Rivian’s manufacturing plant in Normal, Ill., with customer deliveries to begin in June 2021.

"Rivian was formed to help build the kind of future our kids and our kids’ kids deserve. Rivian’s commitment to sustainable vehicle production in our consumer products and commercial vans is driven by this core objective,” said RJ Scaringe, Rivian founder and CEO. “Addressing climate change requires individuals and entire industries to come together to create solutions that shift consumer mindsets and inspire other companies to fundamentally change the way they operate. We’re excited to join The Climate Pledge community that will share knowledge, ideas, and best practices on this important mission."

Uber has committed to become a fully zero-emission platform by 2040, with 100% of rides taking place in zero-emission vehicles, on public transit, or with micromobility options such as bikes and scooters. Uber had previously set a goal to provide 100% of rides in electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030 in U.S., Canadian, and European cities. Uber has also committed to reach net-zero emissions from its corporate operations by 2030. To reach these goals, Uber is expanding Uber Green to make it easier for riders to choose to travel in hybrids or EVs; dedicating $800 million in resources to help hundreds of thousands of drivers transition to EVs by 2025; investing in our multimodal network to provide sustainable alternatives to personal cars; and being transparent and accountable to the public along the way.

“As we announced in September, Uber is taking this moment as an opportunity to drive a green recovery from the pandemic,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber CEO. “We invite every company in the world to join The Climate Pledge and take action to reduce their environmental impact. Together we can more aggressively tackle the urgent challenge of climate change.”

“The Paris Agreement set out a unifying roadmap for all countries and all people to address the climate crisis by taking action,” said Christiana Figueres, the UN’s former climate change chief and Global Optimism’s founding partner. “By joining The Climate Pledge, signatories are not just making a statement of commitment to the future, they also are setting a pathway to significant actions and investments that will create jobs, spur innovation, regenerate the natural environment, and help consumers to buy more sustainable products.”

Race To Zero is a global campaign supported by The Climate Pledge to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, and investors for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery. Race to Zero is partnering with Web Summit at this year’s virtual conference being held Dec. 2-4 to highlight the importance of companies coming together.

In 2019, Amazon and Global Optimism co-founded The Climate Pledge, a commitment to reach the Paris Agreement 10 years early and be net-zero carbon by 2040. Eighteen organizations have now signed The Climate Pledge: Amazon, Best Buy, Boom, Cabify, Henkel, Infosys, JetBlue, McKinstry, Mercedes-Benz, Oak View Group, Real Betis, Reckitt Benckiser (RB), Rivian, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Signify, Uber, and Verizon. These companies are sending an important signal that there will be rapid growth in demand for products and services that help reduce carbon emissions.
