Gates Foundation Backs Remidio’s AI Retinal Platform to Tackle Maternal Health Risks in Africa and India

Remidio Innovative Solutions has received a grant from the Gates Foundation to advance its Oculomics platform, which uses retinal imaging and AI to detect signs of systemic disease, for maternal health applications in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The initiative will focus on improving early risk assessment for major pregnancy complications, including pre-eclampsia (PE), anemia and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The program will be carried out across countries in Africa and India, regions that together bear the overwhelming share of the global maternal and perinatal disease burden


The scale of the problem is stark. There are approximately 2 million stillbirths worldwide each year, equivalent to one every 16 seconds, and 84% of these occur in LMICs. Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, particularly pre-eclampsia, are among the leading placental causes of these deaths. The same conditions are also among the leading causes of maternal mortality globally, contributing to an estimated 42,000 maternal deaths annually. Gestational diabetes mellitus affects approximately one in six pregnancies worldwide, with a disproportionately high burden falling on these same populations. Together, these conditions are major contributors to stillbirth, preterm birth, and long-term cardiovascular and metabolic complications that affect both mothers and their children.

The women most at risk from pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes are often the least likely to reach a laboratory or a specialist in time," said Dr. Anand Sivaraman, Chief Executive Officer and Founding Director, Remidio. "A retinal image takes seconds and can be captured by a frontline worker with minimal training. This grant allows us to ask a clear question with real rigour: can the platform already deployed widely for diabetic retinopathy also help identify pregnancies at risk, in the places where that information is needed most.

The biological link between retinal microvascular changes and systemic vascular and metabolic disease is now well established. Yet in the primary care and community settings where maternal mortality is concentrated, the diagnostic tools that currently support early risk stratification, namely complex laboratory assays, biochemical biomarkers and Doppler-based assessments, are largely unavailable at the point of care, requiring laboratory infrastructure, trained personnel and referral pathways that simply do not exist for most pregnant women in LMICs. Non-invasive retinal imaging, by contrast, is quick, easy to perform by frontline health workers with minimal training, and inherently scalable, making it uniquely suited to bringing advanced risk assessment to the front lines of antenatal care.

The retina is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be observed directly and without an invasive procedure, said Dr. Divya Rao, Chief Medical Officer and Head of AI, Remidio. The microvascular and metabolic changes associated with pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes leave detectable signatures. Having built and validated our retinal AI on a very large and diverse image dataset, our task now is to prove these signals hold up in community antenatal care, in the hands of frontline workers, across different populations. Evidence, not assumption, will decide where this proves useful.


Remidio's portable, smartphone-based retinal imaging platform is already widely deployed across primary care and community screening programs for diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and AMD. The grant will extend this platform into maternal health, with implementation across partner sites in Africa and India.

Hcltech Climate Action Grant in the Americas Awards $1Mn to Advance Scalable Climate Solutions in Its 3rd Edition

HCLTech, a leading global technology company, today announced Guatemala-based CISP - Comitato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo dei Popoli as the winner and Argentina-based Aves Argentinas and Mexico-based Isla Urbana – Lluvia para Todos A.C. as runners-up of the third edition of the HCLTech Climate Action Grant in the Americas. The three nonprofit organizations (NPOs) will collectively receive $1 million to scale innovative climate initiatives across the Americas.

CISP will receive $500,000, while Aves Argentinas and Lluvia para Todos will each receive $250,000. The funding will enable the organizations to expand their work in water security, biodiversity conservation and access to clean water in climate-vulnerable regions.

CISP will focus on improving water security and sustainable land management in Guatemala’s dry corridor with the aim to bring clean water back to 200 families through rainwater harvesting. Aves Argentinas will advance ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation in the Atlantic Forest region of the Iguazú river basin with estimated impact of restoring more than 790 hectares in the community. Lluvia para Todos will expand community-based rainwater harvesting systems in water-stressed regions of Mexico with approximately 2,300 individuals benefitting from rainwater harvesting providing a total of 4.2 million liters of harvested water.

The 2026 edition attracted applications from NPOs across 10 countries in the Americas —Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru and the United States — reflecting a 41% increase since the program’s launch. A seven-member jury comprising of HCLTech leaders and external experts selected the finalists through a multi-stage evaluation process, based on their ability to deliver scalable and locally relevant climate solutions.

“We are inspired by the ingenuity and commitment demonstrated by this year’s recipients, who are driving meaningful climate action in the communities that need it most,” said Dr. Nidhi Pundhir, Senior Vice President, Global CSR, HCLTech. “As the program enters its third year, we are seeing tangible progress in advancing sustainable, community-led solutions, reinforcing our commitment to enabling long-term climate resilience across the region.”

The program builds on the momentum of the previous six NPO recipients, whose initiatives have contributed to ecological restoration, climate resilience and sustainable community development across the Americas. To date, efforts supported through the Grant have enabled the planting of more than 360,000 native trees and mangroves, and empowered more than 1,400 young people, students, and educators through climate leadership. These efforts have strengthened biodiversity and marine ecosystems and advance sustainability education and environmental stewardship programs through AI-enabled environmental monitoring.

Launched in 2023, the HCLTech Climate Action Grant in the Americas is part of the company’s broader sustainability and CSR strategy to invest in and strengthen the communities it serves. HCLTech committed $5 million over five years for this initiative.

DBS Foundation has announced INR 34.40 crore [1] (SGD 4.9 million) in grant funding for its 2025 cohort of grantees, comprising 22 businesses for impact – purpose-driven social enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises – across its core markets in Asia. The winners include three innovative impact enterprises from India: Ikure Techsoft, Lernern and Kadam Haat Basketry.

This marks the 11th edition of DBS Foundation’s grant programme, which was launched in 2015 to support entrepreneurs tackling pressing societal challenges through innovative and scalable solutions. Beyond funding of up to INR 1.75 CR[i] (SGD 250,000) each, grantees will also gain access to holistic support from DBS Foundation’s and DBS’ ecosystem, including mentorship, capacity building, preferential banking solutions and collaboration opportunities with other like-minded players, to accelerate their growth and impact.

In line with DBS Foundation’s mission to strengthen the social and financial resilience of vulnerable communities, the 2025 cohort addresses critical needs such as access to healthcare and income opportunities. Many are leveraging innovative approaches, including AI and digital tools, gamification, circular economy solutions and community-driven models, to scale their impact and reach underserved populations more effectively.

The grantees were selected from nearly 2,200 applications following a rigorous evaluation process, which involved 415 DBS employee volunteers, including senior management, who contributed their skills and expertise as grant evaluators.

The 2025 cohort reflects how businesses for impact are responding to emerging themes in their communities through innovative and scalable approaches.

The three grant awardees from India are:
  • Ikure Techsoft, which provides affordable primary healthcare to rural communities through a network of digital health centres supported by trained community health workers, helping to improve access to essential medical services in underserved regions. 
  • Lernern, an enterprise that aims to strengthen youth employability through work-integrated learning, skills training and apprenticeship programmes that connect young people to job opportunities and industry networks
  • Kadam Haat Basketry, which supports rural artisans by enabling responsible market access for handcrafted products, helping create sustainable livelihoods while preserving traditional skills and crafts

12 Women to Receive STEM Study Support Through Prodigy Finance and NovaGrad’s ProdiSHE Award

Prodigy Finance, together with NovaGrad, have launched ProdiSHE, a new initiative created to support women who want to study STEM subjects abroad.

The idea came from a simple reality that their teams kept seeing. More women are applying for science, technology, engineering, and maths courses overseas, yet many still struggle to make it to the starting line. In some cases, it is the cost of an application fee. In others, it is a visa appointment, or the worry of paying for life abroad. For some students, there is also a lack of support at home. Even USD 200 can be a big amount for a student from a rural area in India or Africa with a big dream and limited financial backing.

Prodigy Finance and NovaGrad say the award is meant to help students at that exact point, when ability and ambition are there, yet money becomes the reason a plan is delayed or dropped.

Women often face more difficulties when deciding to study overseas. The award aims to support students who genuinely need help in taking their next step. The selection process is merit based. Each student will be asked to submit a short essay explaining their goals, their background, and how studying abroad could shape their future. They hope that this support reaches students who are not only talented but also need practical financial help to move forward.

The competition includes two opportunities for eligible students.

Through Prodigy Finance, eligible students who apply for a Prodigy Finance loan during the campaign period may be considered for the ProdiSHE Impact Award. Two recipients from India will receive USD 1,000 off their loan amount.

Through NovaGrad, students who apply to selected partner universities during the campaign period may be considered for application fee reimbursement of up to USD 200. Ten recipients will be selected globally, and a Prodigy Finance loan is not required.

Applications are now officially open at the Prodigy Finance official website and NovaGrad and will close on 10 May 2026. Selected students will be announced by 10th June 2026 on the Prodigy Finance and NovaGrad official sites.

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) today announced the launch of the AI INSPIRED Opportunities in Space Sector programme, a new call for proposals under its INSPIRED initiative, during the India AI Impact Summit held in Delhi. The programme is aimed at accelerating artificial intelligence driven innovation across India’s private space ecosystem through targeted financial and institutional support. The funding support will be provided as grant in aid under the IN-SPACe Seed Fund Scheme.

The announcement was made by Dr. Vinod Kumar, Director, Promotion Directorate, IN-SPACe, while speaking at the session titled “Beyond Earth: How AI is Powering the Next Era of Space Exploration”. IN-SPACe also served as the knowledge partner for the session.

Sharing his thought on this announcement, Dr Vinod said, “Both space and artificial intelligence are burgeoning sectors, and their convergence holds strong potential to transform how we explore and operate in complex and remote environments through autonomous and intelligent decision making. We will support selected entities with proposal development, access to resources, mentorship, skills, and solution building support. We are keen to see how non-government entities use this opportunity to develop solutions that serve national priorities over the long term."

The AI INSPIRED (INnovating Space Performance with Intelligent Resilient Engines Development) Opportunities in Space Sector programme is designed to support the integration of AI with space exploration and applications, with a total outlay of upto Rs 6 crore with maximum of Rs 1 crore to each selected grantee. It seeks proposals that apply artificial intelligence across key areas of space activity, including intelligent onboard and in orbit systems, AI enabled use of space derived data for Earth based applications, and technology led approaches that improve efficiency, reliability and access in space operations. The initiative is intended to promote practical and high impact innovation that connects AI capabilities with space technologies and downstream use cases.

Applications are invited from space start ups and Micro and Small Industries working on innovative AI based solutions relevant to the space sector in three tracks - Edge Intelligence in Orbit, Space for Earth Intelligence, and Smart Access to Space. Up to six grantees will be selected, with each eligible to receive grant in aid support of up to Rs 1 crore to advance their projects.

In an effort to advance health equity and reach the people that need help most, global digital health innovator Qure.ai has received a grant from the Gates Foundation.

The multimillion-dollar grant will allow Qure.ai to develop a large open-source multi-modal database to further advance future prevention and identification innovations. It will support WHO lung-health diagnostic pathways plus augment non-identifiable clinical history, medical images (Chest X-Ray, Thoracic Ultrasound, High Resolution CT), cough/lung recordings, and laboratory or biological markers to enable researchers and innovators around the world to develop, validate, and refine new AI models for the good of all.

This grant will also allow Qure.ai to develop AI-enabled point-of-care ultrasound algorithms as a ‘tool’ for the early detection of TB and pneumonia, two of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases in under-resourced regions. Both are curable if caught early yet TB deaths are approximately 1.23 million annually, pneumonia 2 million each year, 700,000 of which are children under five.

HCLFoundation, which drives the corporate social responsibility agenda of global technology company HCLTech in India, announced a 45% increase in the annual outlay to ₹24 crore for its flagship HCLTech Grant initiative that supports innovative rural development projects by Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in India.

Starting FY26, the HCLTech Grant will be open to applications for promising projects under the new Water category. The Environment category has been replaced with Biodiversity. The Education and Healthcare categories will continue as before.

Each winning NGO in these categories will receive ₹5 crore for four-year projects, while eight runner-up NGOs will get ₹50 lakh for two-year projects. The total grant for the FY26 edition will be ₹24 crore vs ₹16.5 crores in FY25.

The Water category aims to highlight the critical importance of water in sustainable development. HCLFoundation aims to drive impactful community-based solutions to address water scarcity and improve water management in rural areas. The Biodiversity category aims at focused interventions that bring about ecological biodiversity impact that can be seen and measured.

The new initiative will support projects that tackle various aspects of water management, including conservation, efficient usage and sustainable practices. NGOs focusing on water-related issues are encouraged to apply for funding and support.

"Water is a precious resource. Its responsible management is crucial for reducing water stress in India. Through this initiative, we seek to partner with NGOs on innovative projects on water conservation. Also, there is a need to focus on Biodiversity enhancement across the country. The government has given the green light to four start-ups in the domain of technical textiles. Each of these start-ups will receive a grant of approximately INR 50 lakhs under the 'Grant for Research & Entrepreneurship across Aspiring Innovators in Technical Textiles (GREAT)' scheme.

This was announced in the 8th Empowered Programme Committee (EPC) meeting, chaired by Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, under the National Technical Textiles Mission, on Tuesday, at Udyog Bhawan, New Delhi.

Technical textiles are engineered fabrics with specific functionalities.

The approved Start-Up projects are focused on key strategic areas of Composites, Sustainable Textiles, and Smart Textiles. The approved Education Institutes have proposed to introduce new B.Tech courses in different fields and applications of technical textiles including Geotextiles, Geosynthetics, Composites, Civil Structures, etc.

Additionally, five educational institutes, including NITs, will introduce new courses related to technical textiles, thanks to a grant of around INR 20 crores. These courses will cover various applications, including geotextiles, geosynthetics, composites, and civil structures.

Technical textiles are materials designed for their functional properties rather than aesthetics. These find applications in various industries. Selected NPOs use innovative themes including youth-led environmental activism, art and forest restoration to raise awareness and combat climate change

HCLTech, a leading global technology company, has announced Brazil-based Argilando, Canada-based No. 9 Contemporary Art and the Environment and US-based The Longleaf Alliance as the winners of the first edition of the HCLTech Grant Americas.

Launched in September 2023, the HCLTech Grant Americas program has committed $5 million in grants over five years to support Not-For-Profit organizations (NPOs) with innovative projects focused on combating climate change, restoring ecosystems and biodiversity across Americas.

Every year, three NPOs will be selected through a rigorous screening process to receive grants totaling $1 million. One NPO will receive $500,000, while two others will receive $250,000 each.

Among the inaugural edition winners, Brazil-based Argilando will receive the grant of $500,000 for their project Atitude Jovem. The project ignites youth-led environmental activism across Brazil's diverse biomes. Through comprehensive mobilization efforts, educational workshops and strategic planting of native trees, Argilando confronts climate challenges and promotes awareness about sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Canada-based No. 9 Contemporary Art and the Environment will receive $250,000 for using art and design to bring awareness to environmental concerns. Its project "Imagining My Sustainable Community" aims to increase awareness of sustainable design solutions in schools across Canada.

The Longleaf Alliance will receive $250,000 for their project, "Restoring America's Great Southern Forest through Climate Action by Empowering and Enabling Landowners" aims to restore 8 million acres of longleaf pine forests, in the US Southeast.

Since its launch, HCLTech Grant Americas has received a positive response from NPOs in Americas. Within 19 weeks of its launch, the program received 238 registrations and 91 eligible applications from all 10 target countries: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru and the US. Through rigorous vetting, the top 10 applications were selected, followed by the HCLTech Grant Jury nominating the top three finalists.

HCLTech has a sharp focus on Sustainability. The company is committed to becoming net zero by 2040 and reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030. Since the baseline year of FY20, the company has reduced per capita scope 1 and 2 emissions by 22%. Karnataka state government will be funding around 100 startups with its committed budget of Rs 20 crore this year, under the Elevate Karnataka programme. The interested startups that need funding and mentoring to scale up can apply to this scheme till December, announced Priyank Kharge, Minister for Information Technology and Biotechnology, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, in Bengaluru on November 18.

According to Karnataka's IT&BT minister Priyank Kharge, Karnataka is the first state in the country to provide grant-in-aid to startups without taking equity in return.

According to the Minister, through the Elevate Scheme, Karnataka has created a platform for start-ups even in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. “Interestingly, 24% of fund recipients are from Tier 2 & Tier 3 cities, and 30% are women entrepreneurs.”

"We have also done better than private venture capital firms at a time when the funding industry is still talking about slowdowns due to funding winter," minister Kharge said.

The state government will provide a one-time grant of up to Rs 50 lakh to each startup to encourage innovators who may need early-stage funding.

Minister Kharge said that In the last four years, the State has offered around ₹200 crore to 874 start-ups that operate across various business domains. No State government has done this. In fact, we have done better than private venture capital firms, especially when the funding industry is still talking about a funding winter."

In addition, the state government also initiated special programmes to equip Kalyana Karnataka by enhancing the start-up ecosystem in the region to compete with larger markets.

Around 25 start-ups from Kalaburagi, Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir, Koppal, Ballari, and Vijayanagar districts have benefitted under the Elevate Kalyan Karnataka initiative.

GOOD UNIVERSE, an organisation working for women sexual and reproductive health along with the impacts of climate change on women health receives a grant of Rs. 25 lakhs from CIE-IIIT Hyderabad, PRIF (Pernod Ricard India Foundation).

The grant was received for its project E3 for female sanitation workers in the districts of Rangareddy, Sangareddy and Hyderabad. The organisation aims to intervene into the lives of the most vulnerable community of women, the female sanitation workers. Through the project, Good Universe will Educate, Empower and Enable (E3) the female sanitation workers with the right tools and resources that will allow them to live a healthy and dignified life.

This grant is made possible through the WE Incubation Program operated by CIE-IIIT Hyderabad, one of India's largest and oldest deep-tech academic incubators, in collaboration with financial partner Pernod Ricard India Foundation (PRIF), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pernod Ricard India.

The main component of this project is the health of the female sanitation workers. Good Universe is working very closely with these females to bring change in their lives.

Why Female Sanitation Workers?

Facing the intersectionality’s of discrimination, female sanitation workers are one of the most vulnerable communities of women. Being underpaid, undervalued, invisible and unrecognised these women strive to have good health and hygiene. Their exposure to hazardous waste puts their health at high risk.

"If you wake up early in the morning, you will see women cleaning the roads and public toilets, they are the Female Sanitation workers. We see them every day working without any break. These women clean and collect waste in their tri-cycle which they push for long-distance. Public roads and streets being their workplace, they often face the problems of unavailability of proper WASH facilities. During their menstrual cycle being closer to unhygienic environments and conditions along with improper WASH facilities puts them at a high exposure to health and hygiene problems. As a result, during their menstrual cycle, these female sanitation workers suffer from various infections, rashes, bruises on the thighs as well as stomach cramps and lower body pains. Because of the socio-economic status and stigma around menstruation, these women fail to approach and express their needs and pains.

Not only this, the psychosocial risks of female sanitation workers indicate that the mental health of these women often goes unaddressed. With COVID-19 uncertainties and socio-economic situation, there is a rise in mental health issues among this community of women." says Kamal Nayak, Founder of Good Universe.

What is Project E3?

E3 stands for Educating, Empowering and Enabling. Project E3 is the new initiative of Good Universe intervening in the lives of female sanitation workers. By educating, empowering and enabling with the right and adequate tools and resources, Good Universe’s E3 Project adds to the ability of female sanitation workers to live a healthy life and adapt informed lifestyle practices.

After receiving the grant of 2.5 million from CIE IIIT-Hyderabad and PRIF, E3 will be functional among female sanitation workers of Sangareddy, Rangareddy and Hyderabad. The major action areas of this project will be sexual and reproductive health, mental health, non-communicable diseases and breast and cervical cancer.

Kamal Nayak mentions, “Sanitation workers have been kept away from the mainstream knowledge and information around sexual & reproductive health, mental health, breast and cervical cancer and non-communicable diseases. Based on the survey conducted among FWS by Good Universe, women at the age as young as 22 underwent hysterectomy in private hospitals for reasons like contraception, swollen uterus which is not the right thing to do. Lack of awareness and understanding being the major reason for this to happen. Our aim is to provide comprehensive health care to these female sanitation workers. In the first phase, we will be working with 6000 FSWs.”

Through E3, Good Universe would be supporting and engaging female sanitation workers and their adolescent girls in active health programmes and provide them with the knowledge to navigate and voice out through various health issues they often come across due to their poor working conditions.
