Gates Foundation Backs Bengaluru's Remidio’s AI Retinal Platform to Tackle Maternal Health Risks in Africa & India

Gates Foundation Backs Remidio’s AI Retinal Platform to Tackle Maternal Health Risks in Africa and India

Remidio Innovative Solutions has received a grant from the Gates Foundation to advance its Oculomics platform, which uses retinal imaging and AI to detect signs of systemic disease, for maternal health applications in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The initiative will focus on improving early risk assessment for major pregnancy complications, including pre-eclampsia (PE), anemia and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The program will be carried out across countries in Africa and India, regions that together bear the overwhelming share of the global maternal and perinatal disease burden

The scale of the problem is stark. There are approximately 2 million stillbirths worldwide each year, equivalent to one every 16 seconds, and 84% of these occur in LMICs. Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, particularly pre-eclampsia, are among the leading placental causes of these deaths. The same conditions are also among the leading causes of maternal mortality globally, contributing to an estimated 42,000 maternal deaths annually. Gestational diabetes mellitus affects approximately one in six pregnancies worldwide, with a disproportionately high burden falling on these same populations. Together, these conditions are major contributors to stillbirth, preterm birth, and long-term cardiovascular and metabolic complications that affect both mothers and their children.

The women most at risk from pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes are often the least likely to reach a laboratory or a specialist in time," said Dr. Anand Sivaraman, Chief Executive Officer and Founding Director, Remidio. "A retinal image takes seconds and can be captured by a frontline worker with minimal training. This grant allows us to ask a clear question with real rigour: can the platform already deployed widely for diabetic retinopathy also help identify pregnancies at risk, in the places where that information is needed most.

The biological link between retinal microvascular changes and systemic vascular and metabolic disease is now well established. Yet in the primary care and community settings where maternal mortality is concentrated, the diagnostic tools that currently support early risk stratification, namely complex laboratory assays, biochemical biomarkers and Doppler-based assessments, are largely unavailable at the point of care, requiring laboratory infrastructure, trained personnel and referral pathways that simply do not exist for most pregnant women in LMICs. Non-invasive retinal imaging, by contrast, is quick, easy to perform by frontline health workers with minimal training, and inherently scalable, making it uniquely suited to bringing advanced risk assessment to the front lines of antenatal care.

The retina is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be observed directly and without an invasive procedure, said Dr. Divya Rao, Chief Medical Officer and Head of AI, Remidio. The microvascular and metabolic changes associated with pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes leave detectable signatures. Having built and validated our retinal AI on a very large and diverse image dataset, our task now is to prove these signals hold up in community antenatal care, in the hands of frontline workers, across different populations. Evidence, not assumption, will decide where this proves useful.

Remidio's portable, smartphone-based retinal imaging platform is already widely deployed across primary care and community screening programs for diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and AMD. The grant will extend this platform into maternal health, with implementation across partner sites in Africa and India.

A $200 Bn Farewell: Bill Gates Winds Down His Legacy of Giving

A $200 Bn Farewell: Bill Gates Winds Down His Legacy of Giving

Bill Gates has announced a bold plan to wind down the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation by 2045, committing $200 billion over the next two decades to accelerate global health and development initiatives. The goal of Microsoft Founder is to donate 99% of his remaining wealth, ensuring that the foundation’s financial resources are fully utilized within this timeframe.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, originally set to sunset 20 years after Gates’ death, has now revised its charter to close much earlier. The funds will focus on ending preventable deaths, protecting children from infectious diseases, and lifting millions out of poverty. Gates emphasized that technological advancements, including AI, provide unprecedented opportunities to improve lives globally.

This move marks one of the largest philanthropic commitments in history, surpassing even the legendary contributions of figures like John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie. Gates hopes others will follow his lead, stating, “I’d love to be beat in all of this work. Somebody should try and pay more taxes than I did, and save more lives than I did, and give more money than I did, and be smarter than I’ve been.

Unlike many foundations that operate indefinitely, Gates has set a firm closure date, ensuring all funds are spent within two decades. His plan to donate 99% of his wealth contrasts with other billionaires who pledge large sums but distribute them gradually.

Besides, Gates co-founded the Giving Pledge, encouraging billionaires to donate at least half their wealth. While many have signed, few match his scale and urgency.

Warren Buffett has donated billions to the Gates Foundation but prefers gradual giving rather than a structured wind-down.

Several billionaires have committed significant portions of their wealth to philanthropy, each with unique approaches.

MacKenzie Scott has donated over $17 billion in unrestricted grants to nonprofits, focusing on education, racial equity, and economic mobility.

Yvon Chouinard (Founder of Patagonia) transferred his entire company to an environmental trust, ensuring all profits go toward climate change initiatives.

Ratan Tata directed a substantial portion of his wealth to education, healthcare, and rural development, inspiring philanthropy in India.

Chuck Feeney quietly donated over $8 billion, choosing to live modestly while funding education and healthcare.

Warren Buffett has pledged to donate 99% of his fortune, primarily through the Giving Pledge and contributions to the Gates Foundation.

Bill Gates Leaves Microsoft's Board of Directors

Microsoft on Friday announced that co-founder Bill Gates has left its board of directors to devote more time to philanthropy.

The 64-year-old stopped being involved in day-to-day operations at the firm more than a decade ago, turning his attention to the foundation he launched with his wife, Melinda.

Gates served as chairman of Microsoft's board of directors until early in 2014 and has now stepped away entirely, according to the Redmond-based technology giant.

"It's been a tremendous honor and privilege to have worked with and learned from Bill over the years," Microsoft chief executive and company veteran Satya Nadella said in a release.

"Bill founded our company with a belief in the democratizing force of software and a passion to solve society's most pressing challenges; and Microsoft and the world are better for it." Nadella said Microsoft would continue to benefit from Gates' "technical passion and advice" in his continuing role as a technical advisor.

"I am grateful for Bill's friendship and look forward to continuing to work alongside him," Nadella said.

Gates left his CEO position in 2000, handing the company reins to Steve Ballmer to devote more time to his charitable foundation. He gave up the role of chairman at the same time Nadella became Microsoft's third CEO in 2014.

Regularly listed among the world's richest people, William H Gates was a geeky-looking young man when he and Paul Allen co-founded Microsoft in 1975.

Gates grew up in Seattle with two sisters. His father William was an attorney and his late mother Mary was a schoolteacher and chairwoman of United Way International.

He began programming computers as a 13-year-old student, and fell in love with the machines.

Among the tales told about Gates is that while working on school computers, he tinkered with programming to put himself in classes made up mostly of girls.

With his parents' blessing, Gates dropped out of Harvard to start "Micro-soft" with his late childhood friend Allen.

A key move was to focus on licensing software to computer makers in numerous "partnerships" that resulted in affordable machines being available to the masses.

As the personal computer market grew, Microsoft became the world's top software company. Its virtual monopoly led to a much-publicized antitrust trial, in which the company managed to avert a break-up but had to endure years of government monitoring.

Gates went on to turn his attention from software to fighting disease and other humanitarian challenges with his wife, under the auspices of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

"This move is not surprising to the Street as Gates has continued to focus more on his myriad of philanthropies across the globe over the past decade," Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said in a note to investors.

"Gates is a historic figure in the technology world and his legacy at Microsoft will be felt in Redmond for decades to come." (AFP)

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Is Awarding $100,000 To India's Startups, Entrepreneurs Working In Healthcare

Acknowledging the importance of innovation in the filed of health, one of the most neglected but important aspect of human life, India's Department of Biotechnology has joined hands with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and announced a $100,000 (INR 64.3 lakh approx) award for researchers who are able to come up with some never before seen or heard innovations in health including mental health.

The initiative is a part of the Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE)- India programme, which was launched in partnership with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and IKP Knowledge Park, which is jointly developed by ICICI Bank and the Telangana government. The programme published its third notice for proposals this month. The last date to apply is 31st August, 2017.

In India, mental health is still not given the same status on the health chart as compared to the health of our other organs. This is despite the fact that our brain is the engine which plays a crucial part in controlling the functioning of the rest our body parts. According to WHO data, about 7.5% of the Indian population suffers from mental health disorders. This figure is despite the fact that almost half of the mental health disorders cases go unreported in the country as there is a stigma present in the Indian society when it comes to seeing a mental healthcare professional.

The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) is a not for profit company under the Government of India, that works towards facilitating partnerships between researchers and the industry. The initiative can be considered as one such partnership forged by BIRAC.

Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE)- India programme aims to encourage innovations that are capable of tackling pressing problems that the world is facing today like infectious diseases, maternal and child health, family planning, nutrition and mental health. Each winning idea gets INR 50 Lakh award from BIRAC and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and INR 10 Lakh prize upon successful completion of milestones. The winners also get technical and business strategy advice, access to synergistic networks of DBT, BIRAC, BMGF, IKP and their partners, and an opportunity for Phase II funding of up to USD 1 Million.
