Overrule has officially announced the public launch of its integrated agentic legal operating system — a first‑of‑its‑kind platform purpose‑built for Indian lawyers, designed specifically for advocates and law firms practicing before the Supreme Court of India.

Reliance Industries Testing 'Jio TV OS', the 1st Made-in-India Smart TV OS

Reliance Industries has taken a significant step by beta testing India's first homegrown smart television operating system (OS), known as Jio TV OS.

Jio TV OS is based on Google's Android platform. It will compete with established players such as Samsung's Tizen OS, LG's webOS, Skyworth's Coolita OS, and Hisense's Vidaa OS.

Reliance aims to bundle its other apps, including JioCinema, with the smart TVs running Jio TV OS. The integration of Jio broadband connections is also part of the strategy. Licensing deals and JioCinema integration are expected to drive revenue.

Jio TV OS is an open-source platform, encouraging developers to build optimized apps not only for smart TVs but also for other connected devices like smartphones.

Reliance is not charging any licensing fees, aiming to make the OS widely popular.

While large multinational companies like Samsung and LG may not adopt this OS due to their existing platforms, Reliance plans to collaborate with homegrown and smaller brands to increase adoption.

The smart TV market in India faced a 14% year-on-year decline in shipments during the January to March period. However, the segment of 55-inch and above screen size saw a 23% year-on-year growth in the same quarter. The market is expected to decline by 10% in calendar year 2024, primarily due to reduced demand for small-screen TVs.

Overall, Reliance Industries' Jio TV OS aims to disrupt India's smart TV market by offering an open-source alternative and leveraging its ecosystem of services. Keep an eye out for its official launch around Diwali.

Huawei Launching Its Android Competitor 'Harmony OS' Today

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei is set to roll out its Google’s Android competitor platform, Harmony OS, today. The operating system was first unveiled after the United States’ trade ban led Google to withdraw Huawei’s Android license last year.

The operating system is set to roll out to the company’s device today, on devices across Asia.

HarmonyOS 1.0 was announced in August 2019, and was first used by Huawei smart TVs for the Chinese market. HarmonyOS 2.0 was then announced in September 2020, and beta versions were available for selected Huawei smartphones from December 2020.

Huawei gadgets have been cut off from updating Google’s Android operating system since August, following a series of U.S. sanctions against the Shenzhen-based company. The ban also cost Huawei access to the U.S. company’s package of smartphone software known as Google Mobile Services, used widely across the industry.

Huawei claimed that HarmonyOS is a microkernel-based, distributed OS that is completely different from Android and iOS. However, it was later revealed that HarmonyOS 1.0 was based on Android 9 Pie, and supported Android Debug Bridge.

Windows 10 Update Woes Reveal Huge Side-effect of Technological Advancement

Recent Windows 10 updates have fallen far short of the mark when it comes to a bug-free experience. The data deletion issue and massive rollback of version 1809, also known as the October 2018 update, and subsequent re-release that revealed further issues with iCloud and graphics driver support shows how stretched Microsoft’s Windows dev team really is - now that they’ve made a hard commitment to releasing two major updates every year.

If you’ve already installed the latest update for version 1809 (OS Build 17763.134 release on November 13), you may still be facing issues with older Radeon graphics cards using HD2000 and HD4000 GPUs. The worst of it is that Microsoft may well cease sending security updates for that particular configuration.

Windows 10 version 1607 went through a similar block with Intel Clover Trail processors, but in that instance Microsoft had already promised security updates even if users weren’t able to upgrade to a newer build.

This time, it’s possible that users who are still on version 1803 and can’t get the 1809 update will eventually stop receiving security updates. There’s no official word on that, but that could be the direction Microsoft takes.

One of the things we need to keep in mind here is that when it comes to driver support or software upgrades, older hardware is naturally pushed to the bottom of the priority list. That’s not unusual. As a matter of fact, that’s the core of Apple’s strategy of regularly dropping iOS upgrade eligibility for older iDevices. The fallout effect is that users with older devices are encouraged to keep upgrading their hardware every few years even though the device itself might be working just fine.

The Larger Security Problem that Windows 10 Update Issues Highlight

From a security standpoint, this issue pales in comparison with what will happen to Windows 7 users when the extended support window closes on Jan 14, 2020. That’s a little more than a year from now, but Windows 7 is still around 40% of the install base of desktop users who still haven’t upgraded to Windows 10 more than three years after the initial public release.

Much of that clinging-on to Windows 7 has to do with Windows 10 not supporting aging hardware, but it’s also because of app support - or lack of it - for non-UWP apps on Windows 10. In simple terms, a lot of developers of older desktop apps haven’t created the Windows App packages necessary to port to Windows 10.

Come 2020, Windows 7 users will no longer have extended support, and that will make them susceptible to security incidents once the updates stop coming. Mainstream support ended three years ago, so that means a significant user base is already exposed to cybersecurity risks.

From purely a security standpoint, Microsoft’s exclusion of older devices and hardware with the 1809 update could pose a major problem to users over the next year to two years. OS-level vulnerability offers a larger surface area for cyber attacks. It’s not like Windows password security where you can simply use a strong and unique password to protect your system and even reset it with password recovery software when you forget it. Flaws in older versions of any operating system that’s not supported with regular patches always represent a significant threat, especially when it can potentially affect a relatively massive user base of hundreds of millions of Windows 7 users.

Essentially, that’s exactly what Windows 10 users stuck on the 1803 update are going to experience down the road, and it’s going to happen again with future Windows 10 updates. As long as software keeps pulling ahead of hardware, this is a problem that’s going to keep growing. Let’s take an example from the Apple ecosystem. There are millions of first generation iPads that still work great but are restricted to iOS 5.1.1. That means they haven’t gotten any security updates for the past six years or more, since iOS 6 was released in June 2012.

This is not a problem we can afford to ignore. As emerging technologies like AI and VR/AR/MR keep pushing the boundaries of hardware capability and software performance, hundreds of millions of devices will continue to keep falling outside the security umbrella. This offers bad actors a growing pool of vulnerable, Internet-connected devices to target.

In addition, part of Windows 10 users complained password is no longer accepted when the update was completed. However, this could be fixed with the password reset disk or third-party apps like Tunesbro WinGeeker.

Security is one of the biggest concerns in this age of information. The more we achieve at the bleeding edge of technology, the more we leave behind in terms of unprotected devices. This debris littering our digital landscape is only going to get denser with time, and the recent problems with Windows 10 updates merely serve to reiterate the need to address this burgeoning issue.

Minoca OS: A new open source operating system

Meet Minoca OS, a new operating system which has recently gone open source. The developers have released the entirety of the Minoca OS source code under the GNU GPLv3, and are looking forward to building a community of users and developers around this new OS.

Developed for little devices that are in need of a full-featured Operating System, Minoca OS is being marketed as a general purpose operating system that has been written completely from scratch. The OS is ideal for devices that want to conserve their storage, memory and power. Its main aim is to be modular, lean, maintainable, and extremely comparable with the current software.

As far as the app side is concerned, they have got a package manager, and an ever-increasing suite of packages like Node, Git, Ruby, Python, and Lua. Minoca is based on a powerful driver model between device drivers and the kernel. The idea here basically is that drivers can also be written in a forward compatible manner, so kernel level components can be upgraded without the need of a recompilation of all device drivers.

Minoca OS has been written by two young developers, Evan and Chris. They were promoted to come up with Minoca when they realised that it has been 25 long years since the world has seen the birth of any major operating system.

The two developers are looking to explore if this 25 years of clean slate could help them in creating something very unique and interesting in the operating systems space. Meet OpenBike - An "Operating System For Bicycles"

We're almost halfway through the year 2016, and what could be seen as a positive sign for the tech industry, the inventions this year are just getting better and better by the day. The current addition to this year's long list of invention marvels is OpenBike, or “bicycle of the future", as it being helmed by its makers.

Described as an "Operating System For Bicycles", OpenBike is the labour of hard work of Randall Jacobs, a two-time amateur national champion and his business partner Kyle Manna. For a few who have managed to get a peek at the bike's prototype, are calling it a master invention with an all-in-one integrated package that comes with headlights, anti-theft features, integrated automatic tail lights and turn signals, a phone mount and USB charging, among various other features.



In order to make these bikes of the future accessible to the public as soon as possible, OpenBike has partnered Marin Bikes and will be building the first batch of the bikes in the state of California.

According to the makers, the OpenBike will enable sensors, lighters and other electronics to be integrated as a standard equipment.

Hollywood movies are now serving as inspirations to young Indian entrepreneurs. Sci-fi movies like Time Machine, Back to Future are inspiring young blood to push their thinking and come up with ideas inspired from the technologies used in these films, like software that responds to human communication or an application capable of receiving messages from the past.

Taking inspiration from one such Hollywood flick Iron Man, two young Indians have come up with ways which will allow users to play the role of Tony Stark aka Iron Man and order their computers to do tasks for them similar to JARVIS in movie Iron Man, J.A.R.V.I.S. (Stands for Just A Rather Very Intelligent System).

They have an aim of developing an operating system that would be able to understand a human’s needs and will be capable for performing easy task such as arranging folders or sending e-mails.

According to Chirag, the operating system will be capable of being controlled by gestures and voice. It will further keep evolving with time. Here voice doesn't simply mean the voice commands but instead the user will be able to communicate with the operating system normally like a human being and the OS will respond in natural language. It will be like the user is talking to another human being.
