MFine Raises $16m From New & Existing Investors Led by Heritas Capital as Adoption of Digital Health Soars in India Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

SINGAPORE and BENGALURU, India, Jan. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- India's leading Digital Health startup MFine has raised $16m in a new funding round led by Heritas Capital with participation from Singapore-based family office of Y'S Investment Pte Ltd. Existing MFine investors including SBI Investment, SBI Ven Capital, BEENEXT and Alteria Capital have also followed-on in the round. The oversubscribed round wraps up a strong year for MFine with the company achieving 10x growth amidst exponential adoption of telemedicine and digital health in India in 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic, subsequent lockdown measures and the release of Telemedicine Guidelines by Government of India have led to the widespread adoption of telemedicine in India. A new standard for digital health services including health IDs, personal health records, Digi Doctor and a health facility registry has also been announced in August 2020 under the National Digital Health Mission (NDHM) to support universal health coverage for India's citizens.

With over 4,000 doctors including some of India's top doctors from 600 reputed hospitals covering 35 specialties on the platform, MFine provides users with on-demand access to quality medical care even as COVID-19 hindered delivery of routine healthcare to chronic patients from remote locations. Since COVID-19, more than one million users have utilized MFine's platform to teleconsult with doctors on chronic conditions such as diabetes and arthritis and acute illnesses including viral infections, and for varying services including diagnostics, health checks, radiology and e-pharmacy.

"The year 2020 has been very significant for us. During the pandemic, with the introduction of strict lockdowns and social distancing measures, we found ourselves in a unique position to help millions of people with access to essential healthcare services. We are seeing incredible traction on the provider and consumer side. Our vision of digital health as a solution to scale quality healthcare delivery has been accelerated by 2 years. The entire ecosystem is now on an accelerated transformation with the Indian government also introducing the National Health Stack. India is on the cusp of redefining healthcare delivery and we are actively engaged in shaping and leveraging this big shift," said Prasad Kompalli, Co-founder & CEO of MFine.

In 2020 MFine expanded its geographical coverage beyond physical boundaries of the cities to serve people from over 1,000 towns in India and launched several new services such as AI-based self-assessment of various health conditions, long term care programs for chronic conditions and membership to offer benefits on all the services for its direct consumers and also corporates.

"MFine has developed a compelling solution that has proven to be highly impactful during this pandemic to ensure continued and trusted access to quality and affordable healthcare services. We believe that MFine's collaborative partnership model with hospitals and doctors powered by the application of AI will enable smart optimization of limited healthcare resources to address unmet needs throughout India and beyond," said Chik Wai Chiew, CEO & Executive Director of Heritas Capital.

"This is a great example of how mobile connectivity and advances in technology can aid in providing primary health care to millions of people. We see huge potential MFine's state-of-the-art AI and mobile technology platform and its ability to scale beyond India as COVID-19 has accelerated the use of telemedicine and digital health in India and other regions in SEA," Yoshitaka Kitao, Representative Director & Chairman of SBI Investment.

"MFine has pioneered the access to top-class, trusted medical care in India. Despite 2020 being a difficult operating year, the MFine team has demonstrated its strong execution capability to add new capability, launch new offerings, accelerate traction while achieving strong economics. We are excited to continue backing the MFine team to create a large, world class healthcare company with deep positive impact," said Teruhide Sato, Founder & Managing Partner of BEENEXT.

The COVID-19 pandemic has supercharged global funding activity in digital health in 2020. In 2020, telemedicine was the top-funded category and led VC funding activity with $4.3 billion, a 139 % YoY increase compared to $1.8 billion in 2019. Global venture capital funding in digital health came to $14.8 billion, a 66% increase compared to $8.9 billion in 2019, according to Mercom Capital's annual report on funding and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity for the digital health sector for 2020.

With this fresh funding, MFine plans to reinforce its leading position in delivering an AI-driven, on-demand healthcare service across India, and aims to be one of the largest virtual hospitals in the world with services across primary care, secondary care and chronic care management in collaboration with its trusted partners. MFine will deploy the funds towards tripling its investments in AI, mobile engineering and device integration; expanding its hospital network across the country; scaling the recently launched services which include delivering medicines, preventive health screenings and diagnostic tests. The company will also initiate Series C fund raising in the coming months.

Health Tech Startup ConnectedH Raises Seed Funding from First Cheque, Rohit MA, PointOne Capital and Other Investors

The funding will be used to expand the brand’s presence pan India and widening their offerings

ConnectedH, a health-tech company committed to unlocking the full potential of diagnostics, has raised an undisclosed seed amount in funding from venture capital First Cheque, Rohit MA (Founder, Cloudnine Hospitals), PointOne Capital, and other investors.

The funding will be used to expand the brand’s geographical presence and integrate it deeper into the diagnostics ecosystem. It will also be used to widen their value offerings for diagnostic centers thereby making them a one-stop solution for all their marketing and operations needs.

Unorganized medical data is one of the major issues in healthcare delivery and also responsible for the wrong diagnosis in many cases. Since its inception in 2018, ConnectedH has been on a mission to simplify healthcare by organizing healthcare data. The brand is working towards creating a connected healthcare ecosystem where patients have complete control and 24x7 anywhere access to their organized medical information across various stakeholders including diagnostic centers, doctors, hospitals, etc. This is also in alignment with the recent announcement of the government’s National Digital Health Mission.

The other investors in the funding round include Ajeet Singh Kushwaha (Founder, Seekify); Ankur Pahwa (Partner, E&Y); Anurag Mehrotra (President & MD, Ford India); Bharanidharan Viswanathan & Nitin Mathur (Founders of 91mobiles); Harsh Pokharna and Gaurav Kumar (Co-Founders, Okcredit); Kishore Ganji; Kunal Khatter (Managing Director, AdvantEdge in personal capacity); Sprout Investments; Umang Kumar (Founder, Gaadi.com); and Vivek Shah (MD, Investment Banking, Haitong).

Speaking about this, Shubham Gupta, Co-Founder, ConnectedH, said, “ConnectedH was the outcome of a personal experience. I was hospitalized due to a UTI and had to visit doctors every week for almost two years after, waiting for hours at the reception for just 5 minutes of facetime. It was an endless cycle of repeating my medical history with no one having the time to go through it either. While I could solve the issue by collating my data with excel, I realized how others would be undergoing the same issue”.

Adding to this, Suresh Singh, Co-Founder, ConnectedH said, “Shubham’s experience exposed us to the horrors of unorganized healthcare data and brought back similar memories in my family. While the solution was very apparent, the starting point wasn’t so. We had to figure out the right value proposition for various stakeholders. After shadowing multiple doctors, diagnostic center owners, and hospital owners for more than 6 months to identify their pain points and possible solutions, we finally zeroed down on the diagnostics space. Our digital ecosystem offerings enable the creation of an organized diagnostic history of patients, while helping diagnostic centers exceed customer expectations, and increase their business, improve operations, and deliver better margins."

Adding further, Kushal Bhagia, First Cheque, said, "At a time when India's healthcare system is already overburdened, ConnectedH has come up with a solution that can become a gamechanger in the area of digitizing health records. Single-point access to all healthcare data will not only enable diagnostic centers to become more organized but also improve health outcomes. We hope to see ConnectedH expanding the scope of their coverage with this funding."

Rohit M A, Co-founder and Managing Director of Cloudnine Group of Hospitals invested through his investment arm Capier Investments, said, “Suresh, Shubham, and Rahul have set out to solve a very pertinent issue in our country's healthcare wherein unorganized primary medical data has been a major issue for years. They have identified an approach which can be easily scaled to touch the lives of millions of consumers across the value chain and in a short time, have already demonstrated the ability to organize diagnostic records of over 10% of Delhi population while creating genuine value and engagement for their diagnostic partners."

The diagnostic sector in India is poised for good growth in the years ahead with estimates pegging the market size at $15 billion in 2020. Despite the 90% hit on the diagnostic volumes in the immediate aftermath of the nationwide lockdown, ConnectedH’s business crossed pre-lock down levels by July 2020.

Adding further, Archana Priyadarshini Point One Capital, said, “We are very happy to support a health-tech startup like ConnectedH, which aims to solve a pertinent problem facing the healthcare sector today. Incorrect and unorganized information is a major cause of misdiagnosis in a majority of health cases. By offering a tech-based solution for collating all this healthcare data at one point, ConnectedH will enable improve health outcomes for patients while also increasing ROI for diagnostic centers."

Before this funding, ConnectedH raised its first smaller seed round from the top management of CarDekho including Avinash Kumar (Founder, Credenc).

Nutrition-Tech Startup Habbit Health Raises Pre-Seed Funding from 3one4 Capital, AngelList India

Habbit Health and Nutrition Pvt Ltd, announced today that it has raised an undisclosed amount as a pre-seed investment from top global investors. VC firm 3one4 Capital and Utsav Somani of AngelList India led the round. Singapore based RB Investments, early stage investors Better Capital and First Cheque and multiple other well-known angel investors from around the world participated via AngelList. With rising per capita incomes, preventive healthcare market in India is expected to be over US$100 billion in 2022. The spend on nutrition, healthy foods, functional foods and supplements is expected to quadruple to over US$ 50 billion in the next decade, growing at 17% CAGR. Rapidly rising awareness about the importance of good nutrition is accelerating this trend in the top 10% of the population which accounts for over 40% of Indian consumption.

Explaining his rationale behind the investment, Utsav Somani, Partner at AngelList India, said, “Health and wellness is the growth sector of the future. The Covid Pandemic has made everyone realize that good nutrition is a must have and not just for those who work-out. We are seeing lots of products and brands create clutter, without any differentiation. However, the products, brand positioning and customer love demonstrated by the Habbit team are a standout. We are happy to back them early in their mission to create a global leader in health and nutrition.”

On their decision to invest, Anurag Ramdasan, Principal at 3one4 Capital, said, “The combination of deep product IP, unique brand experience in a large growing market and the extensive use of technology throughout the value chain, makes Habbit different from a regular niche D2C brand. The team with their stellar credentials is a prime contender to scale rapidly, raise the bar and deliver audacious results. Something that we at 3one4 capital live by.”

Mr. Dhruv Bhushan, CEO, Habbit Health

Sharing the organizational vision, Dhruv Bhushan, Co-Founder & CEO, said, “Lifestyle diseases with their origin in poor nutrition are today’s biggest health concern. Still, there has been little innovation in the consumption category, making it irrelevant for an increasingly health aware audience. Habbit uses modern science and technologies to disrupt these with healthier alternatives, without needing to change user behaviour and still maintaining the same taste. Our IP and technology make us best suited to scale rapidly and capture a slice of this over US$100 billion opportunity. We are proud to have forward-thinking investors around the world supporting our long-term vision and ambitions, even before our launch.”

Added, Dev Kabir Malik, Co-Founder & Chief Brand Officer, “Most conversations around health are exercise and goal oriented. Brands are currently very product centric and positioned to target those who are highly involved in fitness. They are thus never able to create large scale impact. We believe that health is a lifestyle and that nutrition is the first step in the health journey, for everyone. Consistency is key, as the benefits of small steps compound over time. Health really is a Habbit”

About Habbit:

Founded by serial entrepreneur/angel investor Dhruv Bhushan and leading brand consultant Dev Kabir Malik, Habbit is a global nutrition-tech company that applies modern science to help consumers be healthier through a range of proprietary foods & digital ecosystem.

Based on path breaking global research, Habbit products are formulated using only modern natural ingredients, and make everyday nutrition simple, enjoyable and rewarding. Through alternate natural sources of proteins, fats and sugars, Habbit is making every consumable item as healthy as possible, without compromising on the taste. It will be launching in a phased manner, a wide portfolio of personalised products - from natural proteins for everyday use, to indulgent snacks, refreshing beverages and delightful ice creams. These products have already been tried and endorsed by thousands of top lifestyle, nutrition, health and fitness experts.

A tech-led gamified health journey aims to make the digital Habbit experience the easiest for consumers to be healthy. By promoting health as a lifestyle and not a goal-oriented activity, it allows a vast majority of the population to be healthy, and does not cater only to the fitness enthusiasts. In doing so, Habbit aims to build an innovative global FMCG company for the future which leverages technology to deliver the pinnacle of customer experience.

In current times of pandemic when the world is looking for solutions to improve immunity, the Ministry of Ayush is combining the power of breathing techniques, herbs and meditation to help beat the virus. CCRYN will use these devices to monitor how Covid-19 patients’ health is improving from different yogic techniques in these hospitals located in Delhi, Chandigarh and Rishikesh.

While the medical community is strained with the increasing numbers, the data provided by Dozee on a real time basis will aid remote health monitoring by doctors and reduce their burden. It will also create a step down ICU for the hospitals battling shortage of beds. We hope to work in unison with Dozee for other hospitals too in the future integrating our yoga solutions along with real time monitoring.”

A Motion-Detecting Fitness App that Pays its Users to Exercise Set to Launch this Month

South Australia's Adelaide -based app development company PixelForce has been working on the project – known as Fitbotic – for the past three years.

According to the company's Managing Director Hinney Lo, Fitbotic used motion detection technology to track the number of repetitions a user performed through body movement recognition, without the need for additional phone accessories.

The platform is currently available in NSW, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia.

He said it was designed for people new to working out as well as those who lacked motivation – and was unlike most other fitness apps on the market that relied on users to manually input their repetitions. “We want to encourage or help users build up their workout habits because it’s fun and rewarding,” Lo said.

“Hopefully once they have built up this habit, they can move onto a professional workout app, like SWEAT or our other clients.”

Lo founded PixelForce in 2011 with a focus on logos, graphic design and basic website construction. The company took off four years later after developing the first SWEAT mobile app for South Australian fitness guru Kayla Itsines.

PixelForce has since developed a range of apps and websites for brands across industries including wellness, food and wine, and transport. But unlike PixelForce’s other developments, Fitbotic is the company’s first fully-owned and developed initiative.

The app would reward users for working out through Fitbotic credits, which could be used to make purchases through the business’s e-commerce store or cashed out.

“You can’t cash out 10 cents, because there is a transaction fee on every transaction,” Hinney Lo explained.

“We charge on a monthly basis; the app will charge $9.99 per month. If you work out consistently and you meet all your goals, technically you can get all of your money back or you can even make a little bit of money – maybe a few dollars. But if you are not doing great, keeping up and meeting the goals you won’t be able to earn the money back," Lo said.

He said users seeking further motivation would also be able to choose from a range of virtual trainers to count repetitions.

“You can actually select the level of amusement on the voice over. So, if you select 18+ it might swear a little bit, like a hardcore fitness trainer,” Lo said.

“But if you select the moderate mode it would be very encouraging.”

While the app is currently available for Apple and Android devices through the iTunes store and Google Play, the official software won’t be available until its launch in about two weeks.

The project is the latest in a string of developments from the company, which moved into a larger inner-city office earlier this year.

It is also preparing to launch one of its other projects – EzLicense, a platform which connects driving instructors with students looking to learn to drive – in South Australia in the coming months.

“As a learner you go onto the website and put in your suburb and postcode and choose your transmission and automatic or manual and search and it will display all the instructors that are servicing in that area,” Lo said.

“EzLicense is a real-time platform that integrates with the instructors’ calendar. It shows you all the availability in real time so you don’t need an instruction or call back from the instructor, it can be booked in under two minutes.”

Health Tech Startup Medimetry Raises Funding from Bluesky Capital

Launched in 2014, by IIT alumnus Krishan Tyagi and his wife Dr Bhawana Tyagi, Medimettry offers an online platform for telemedicine, electronic medical records and disease management.

The company started out as an online doctor consultation platform that connects doctors with patients in real time. It is now building a digital disease management platform for chronic ailments. Medimetry has a mobile app and web portal that enable patients to chat with doctors at their convenience - from anywhere, at anytime.

On-Demand Healthcare Startup mfine Raises $4.2 Mn from Prime Venture Partners, Others

Bangalore-based mfine, an app-based on-demand healthcare service provider, has raised $4.2 million in Series A funding led by Prime Venture Partners along with participation of existing investors Stellaris Venture Partners and Mayur Abhaya (CEO and MD of LifeCell).

The startup will use freshly raised funds to build larger hospital network, and further strengthen the technology team of the startup, which presently counts 50 employees in Bengaluru.

Founded in 2017 by Ashutosh Lawania and Prasad Kompalli, mfine brings in instant and continuous connectivity with top doctors of the best hospitals. The startup had earlier raised $1.5 million from Stellaris Venture Partners, in September 2017. The startup has raised over USD 6 million in total, to date.

"We see a huge opportunity to bring the much needed, tech-driven transformation in the USD 50 billion primary healthcare delivery. With our deeply tech driven approach and working with reputed providers, we are effectively creating a 'cloud clinic' where quality healthcare can be accessed on demand from anywhere. We believe we can scale this across the country and beyond and help people gain much more control over their health," said mfine co-founder and CEO, Prasad Kompalli.

The mfine platform ensures that patients can reach the doctors on the network within 60 seconds and start the consultation. Users get access to the same doctors and other integrated experiences as visiting a hospital, virtually and when they need. mfine is also planning to launch additional services such as monitoring of vitals, collection of sample for lab tests and medicine delivery at home.

Additionally, the startup has built an AI-powered technology system that improves doctors' efficiency and effectiveness dramatically. The system is built on the foundation of standard medical ontologies and protocols and is able to learn and replicate high quality diagnosis and treatment methods. The system takes care of structured data collection, reminders for follow up based on signs/symptoms and execution of care protocols for chronic conditions, thereby building a platform that's unique and globally competitive.
