Groww Foundation to Support Over 100 Student Startup Teams Annually, Unveils Ist Cohort

Groww Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Groww, today announced the first cohort of the INV.ENT program, backing 19 ideas by 35 young innovators at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). The grants are the entry point of a program that will support over 100 student teams a year, with the strongest ones rewarded the Grand Challenge Fellowship with its larger, milestone-based support.

Chosen from nearly 400 submissions across disciplines, the ideas stretch across agri-tech, robotics, climate-tech, assistive-tech, retail, design, edtech, gaming and defence, several leveraging AI and ML to tackle the hitherto unsolved problems. The full portfolio of the selected ideas is at: growwfoundationiitb.org/portfolio

Across the cohort, the winning ideas range across a marketplace that takes ceramics from Dharavi's potters to customers, a wearable sleeve that coaches physiotherapy patients through their exercises, a platform that turns CO2 into edible protein and an AI system built to guard critical infrastructure against rogue drones.

The first cohort spans the program's two tracks. 3 student teams have been named the program's inaugural Grand Challenge Fellows and are eligible for milestone-based annual support of up to Rs 25 lakh each. The 16 remaining student teams enter the POC Support Track with a catalytic grant of Rs 30,000 each.

On top of the grant, this cohort will receive mentoring and a 15,000 sqft dedicated space, called Groww Innovation Space, located at IIT Bombay's Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship (DSSE). This space will be used to build, test a core assumption, speak to real users and assemble a prototype, thereby allowing a steady influx of new ideas from students into this ongoing program that doesn't come with a submission deadline - just a commitment to fostering fearless innovation.

"At Groww Foundation, our mission since day zero has been to empower India's youth with opportunities to learn, build and innovate. INV.ENT is a program born out of that belief," said Kalpana Swaminathan, Head of Groww Foundation. "We see this as a launchpad, the place where young innovators get the mentorship, financial support and trust to take their first real shot, long before the world is watching. We're excited to work closely with this cohort of innovators as they turn their conviction into something real, and we hope to look back one day and call this the starting point for some of India's most impactful builders."

Reflecting on what the first INV.ENT cohort represents for student innovation at IIT Bombay, Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay, said, "At IIT Bombay, we believe that the distance between an idea and its impact is often determined by whether someone believes in it early enough. Our partnership with Groww Foundation through INV.ENT is built on that shared conviction. Young innovators deserve the freedom, resources, and encouragement to test bold ideas before the world expects results. Together, we are creating an ecosystem where students do not have to wait for permission to build. They can test, fail, learn, and move forward. That is how enduring innovation ecosystems are built."

Mukund and the Team BeBrust, one of the winning teams, shared, "The overall experience of selection has been really helpful in improving our clarity. We understood the caliber of the team. We are now more confident in the innovation of our idea and in our mission, opportunity, and ability to perceive and experiment. We are looking forward to getting a bigger network and being at least one year ahead of our plan."

BITS/ IIMA Alums' VC Firm gradCapital Launches $6 Mn Fund to Invest $40K into Students Who Want to Create Large Companies

  • Backed by key investors: CIIE, IIM-Ahmedabad, Alagu Periyannan, Ankur Warikoo, & Kanwal Rekhi.
  • Post gradCapital cohort, 30% of companies raised an average follow-on of $600K
  • Apart from a $6M fund, they also launched atomic fellowship: to give no-strings-attached grant of $5,000 to students who want to work on a science project that has the potential to become a company
gradCapital, started by BITS/ IIMA alums launched its second fund with a total fund size of $6M to invest in student startups.

gradCapital Launches $6 Mn Fund to Invest $40K into Students Who Want to Create Large Companies

gradCapital believes in students by offering a standard check: $40,000 for 4%, and funded students get to be part of a 4-week cohort in Bangalore where they meet the people who have made a dent in the world previously. Tarun Mehta (Co-founder, Ather Energy), Shashank (Co-founder, Razorpay), Kailash Nadh (CTO, Zerodha) - are some people who have engaged with students in their cohort.

Most companies raise their next round post gC cohort, and follow-on investors include Lightspeed & Rainmatter Capital.

They fund people all year round, get around 3000 applications a year, and fund around 20 a year. Getting in is hard obviously, but it’s worth a shot.

In a statement about the fund launch, Abhishek, Co-founder & CEO said, “We are not in the business of finding and investing in deals, we are in the business of letting students be more ambitious and build a future, despite having a challenging education system. Being a student also has an unfair advantage: building with friends, not being scared of thinking big, and being scrappy/ fast with their project. How many experienced people can do that? It’s a systemic failure when ambitious students aren’t able to take off while in college, and they end up taking a job because of a loan, and become too rational. After which, they are more likely to start a D2C company instead of a quantum computer, and we need more of the latter.”

gradCapital loves funding teams who have started companies from projects, especially science & engineering projects. They launched a grant program - atomic fellowship - where they want to distribute $5,000 grants to students with technical projects that have the potential of becoming companies. It’s supported by Emergent Ventures, which is backed by Peter Thiel. It will be run by Kshitij (Co-founder at Pixxel) and gradCapital.

gradCapital Launches $6 Mn Fund to Invest $40K into Students Who Want to Create Large Companies
Previous batch of gC founders sharing their journey to the new batch

In 2021, gradCapital was started by 2 friends in the dorm too, at IIMA. Then, gradCapital conducted a cohort of 5 teams to help them get into YC, and Zepto was a part of it. gradCapital then raised a $1M fund to deploy into 18 companies, and the fund is running at ~2x its initial value within 18 months.

There are few stories that were part of gradCapital.

They believe that students will change the world, if they are supported at the right time. A small event of an outsider believing in them with money and faith, can permanently change their trajectory. This can snow-ball into them creating large companies where they keep moving forward and finding bigger backers.

Naman Pushp, founder of Airbound (airbound.co), was 16 (and in school) when gradCapital funded him with $25K. He had a computer simulation of the drone he wanted to build, and an aspiration to quit college to build a large delivery company. Eventually he dropped out from college, and by the time he was 18, raised a $1.7M round led by Lightpseed.

Ritvik, co-founder of Ripen (ripen.in), was graduating from SRCC when he applied to gradCapital. He wanted to build social apps that help people navigate adulthood despite being from a commerce college, and had to go against the norms. Heet and Aviral joined the mission and they raised a $525K pre-seed led by Good Capital and Rainmatter.

Akshay, Anesh, Akshat, and Ankit were 3rd year students in an engineering college with an MVP to help people improve their speech using AI: Stimuler (stimuler.tech). By the time they were graduating from college, they got multiple YC Interviews and raised a large seed round from investors hailing from top Silicon Valley, Japan & India investors.

The world of VC has to change - it has to be truly risk optimised, and India has to come at the forefront of creating cutting edge products. gradCapital is advocating for capital to a place which has been underserved but has the potential to change the world.

16 Student Startups Graduate from iB Hubs Startup School'19 Lucknow

The increase in number of startups and innovations makes way for the country to progress rapidly. Despite the increasing startup trend in India, only a few startups manage to thrive. To reshape this scenario and bring out more successful startups, iB Hubs, a PAN India Startup Hub, has come up with a novel initiative called iB Hubs Startup School that nurtures budding student startups. This 4-week zero-fee & zero-equity student acceleration program has taken in the 8th batch of young founders at Lucknow from mid-June.

The year, iB Hubs Startup School graduated 9 startups from Hyderabad, and currently, Lucknow cohort is nurturing 16 more. Through out-and-out learnings and experimentation, and great exposure to the real-world scenarios, the program presents an in-depth perspective on the dynamics and workings of the startup world.

Alumni of iB Hubs Startup School ‘17 and ‘18 have also joined the 2019 program to guide their juniors, throughout this program and after, with their experiences and learnings from running their startups.

Over 3 years, the program has empowered 140+ student entrepreneurs helping them carve their success stories and creating role models in the student startup ecosystem. The 2019 edition received applications from 800+ aspiring entrepreneurs from 200+ universities across 25 states in India.

The cohort contains startups from diverse domains like IoT, agritech, health tech, social media, green tech, and more. Few of the startups this year are, Oxyheal - a health tech startup that builds oxygen-enabled medical devices to cure chronic wounds, Novzo - a platform for readers to connect with people of their interests, EF Polymers - a startup that produces biodegradable polymers which enhance soil fertility and crop production, Infiability - sports-based startup that designs and delivers performance-enhancing sports equipment for international sportsmen, etc.

During the program, the student entrepreneurs conduct on-ground interviews with potential customers, strategize business models, master lean startup methods, learn basic financial and legal aspects, develop pitch decks, and understand the intricacies of the startup world.

The young founders also interacted with experts like Mr. Satish Kataria - CEO of Catapooolt, Dr. Jagdish Chaturvedi - ENT Surgeon, Stanford-India Biodesign Fellow 2012, Mr. Saurabh Gupta - an executive from Digital Ocean, Mr. Sasank Parimi - SVP Business Development at ProYuga Advanced Technologies Ltd, and learnt valuable startup life lessons.

The growing number of young entrepreneurs in India backed by the initiatives like iB Hubs Startup School would bring out more successful startups from the country.

Entrepreneurs master Financial Intelligence at iB Hubs Startup School

iB Hubs Startup School, a 4-week zero-fee & zero-equity student acceleration program is running into its 3rd week in full vigour. While the student entrepreneurs focused on customer centricity in the first week, they dived deeper into the concepts of Finance and Business Model Innovation after that.

The entrepreneurs explored the essential skills of financial intelligence to understand and take wise decisions for building their startup books. Startups learnt the fundamentals of balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement, different ratios, best practices for building a financially intelligent company, etc.

This learning was deeply enhanced by expert talks from seasoned entrepreneurs. Mr. Satish Kataria, Founder at Catapooolt, a crowdfunding platform detailed the students on crowdfunding. The students also gained rich insights on the life of a serial entrepreneur from Mr. Prashant Lingam, co-founder of Bamboo House India. The entrepreneurs were greatly inspired by the talk from Ms. Meghana Dabbara, founder of Make The World Wonderful, on her vision and the steps they are taking towards building a harmonious culture in the society.

They also explored some of the best project management tools to help them manage work effectively.

Kritika Singh from Startup India explained how initiatives from the Government of India act as a bridge between startups and other prominent players in the startup ecosystem and how entrepreneurs can avail different benefits of Startup India.

An unexpected off-beat session was conducted where the students got to experience the immersive iB Cricket. The student entrepreneurs formed teams and played a cricket tournament in virtual reality. The session gave them hands-on lessons on the importance of team building and leadership.

4,000 Students' Startup Projects to be Supported by the Gujarat Government in New Initiative

The Gujarat Government, through its Student Start-up and Innovation Policy (SSIP) programme, has lent support to as many as 4,000 innovative projects, while it braces for harnessing and upscaling 500 students' startups in the next five years.

Speaking at the inaugural of the 1st edition of a 2-day SSIP Student Annual Conference on Student Innovation, Start-ups and Ecosystem held yesterday at Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) campus, Gujarat's Principal Secretary (Education) Anju Sharma said that innovative projects including over 2,000 prototypes had already been developed and 500 of them are patented.

Speaking at the conference, State's Commissioner of Technical Education Avantika Singh said the Gujarat Government had set a goal of "harnessing as well as scaling up 500 students' startups in the next five years."

Launched in 2017, the Student Startup and Innovation Policy (SSIP) of Government of Gujarat is focused on creating an integrated, state-wide, university-based innovation ecosystem in order to support ideas and innovations of the students and offer them a conducive environment that would harness their creative pursuit.

Held at EDII on June 6 and 7, the conference saw the participation of about 155 start-ups and 118 young innovators from across the country, along with 18 academic institutions, 9 universities and 79 mentors. A total of 11 student start-ups and 5 young innovators along with 3 institutions, 3 universities and 10 mentors will receive SSIP Prashansha awards.

In the event's stage-wise process the students are first educated about what innovation and creativity is and why is 'Design Thinking' important. The students then come up with several innovative projects "from which certain good projects that have potential are selected by the Screening Committee of their respective institutes for prototype development.

The prototypes that get developed result into startups for which further support to the students is provided by the government, including the patent fees and patent consultancy. Around 4,000 such innovative projects are supported.

Among the start-ups, 'Bogie Sauf', an automated tire air pressure maintenance system from Government Engineering College in Dahod in central Gujarat, 'Booz- Hello Skate Mobility' from Gujarat University Startup and Entrepreneurship Council, 'Maarg Sahayaka' from Vishwakarma Government Engineering College were major attractions at a startups exhibition, which has also been organised.

Bogie Sauf

Developed by mechanical engineering students of Government Engineering College in Dahod -- Mayur Mahla, Gaurav Chale, and Kartik Patel, Bogie Sauf is a innovative system which would automatically fill air after a tyre has been punctured enabling the vehicle to ply for a distance.

The device would automatically fill air at the very moment when a tyre of a vehicle is punctured. The air filled into the tyre 'on-the-go' that is even if the vehicle is moving and the vehicle can go up to 70 km. The device stops filling up air, if the vehicle comes to a halt. The innovation can ensure the safety of women driving late at night and can also be used against dacoits, Naxalites, and even terrorists, who often plan flattening the tyres of vehicles in order to execute their bad intentions.

The students received initial funding of Rs 27,000 through Students Start-up and Innovation Policy of the state government through which they developed a prototype of one tyre and displayed their idea at the exhibition held at Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII).
