India Tests Fast‑Charging Iron‑Air Battery at NTPC Simhadri to Boost 24×7 Renewable Power

A pilot project has been planned at NTPC Simhadri Thermal Power Station to evaluate an indigenous Iron-Air Battery technology for Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) applications. The project will be implemented by Atal Incubation Centre – Anna University (AIC-AU) at NTPC Simhadri through its technology partner, Meine Electric, with the objective of assessing the technology under utility operating conditions.

The pilot project will evaluate the technical performance, operational reliability and operational characteristics of the indigenous Iron-Air Battery system under real-world conditions. The study is expected to generate valuable operational data and insights into the suitability of the technology for long-duration energy storage applications, enabling reliable 24×7 clean energy, enhancing grid flexibility and supporting future applications that require enhanced operational flexibility.

Meine Electric is the first company in APAC and the third globally to pioneer Iron-Air Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) technology. Its proprietary Fast Charge Long Discharge (FCLD) technology, which enables a six-hour charge and 18-hour discharge, has also been independently validated by Customized Energy Solutions (CES), the parent company of the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA). CES Battery Laboratory testing assessed the technology's electrochemical performance, capacity retention and operational stability under a 6-hour charging and 18-hour discharging cycle, providing third-party validation as Meine Electric advances towards larger-scale demonstrations and commercial deployment.

As India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, long-duration energy storage is expected to play an increasingly important role in improving grid reliability, managing renewable energy variability and supporting a more flexible and resilient power system. The pilot project is expected to contribute towards the development and evaluation of indigenous energy storage technologies while generating valuable learnings for future applications.

Through the AIC-Anna University initiative, Meine Electric will be responsible for the development, system integration and performance monitoring of the Iron-Air Battery system. The operational data and technical insights generated during the pilot will provide an important benchmark for further technology development and future commercial-scale deployment.

L&T Energy CarbonLite Solutions Secures LNTP for Mega* Order of 1,600 MW Thermal Power Plant

L&T Energy CarbonLite Solutions has secured a Limited Notice to Proceed (LNTP) from NTPC Ltd for the main plant package of the 2x800 MW Lara Stage-III thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh. The Notice to Proceed will be granted once the project secures environmental clearance and the LNTP period is completed.

The project entails the construction of two state-of-the-art 800 MW ultra-supercritical generating units. L&T's scope encompasses the design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of Boilers, Steam Turbines, Generators, Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs), Air Cooled Condensers (ACC) and their auxiliaries, along with associated mechanical, electrical, control & instrumentation and civil works.

The tasks will be executed on an EPC basis using ultra-supercritical technology, which offers higher efficiency and lowers specific emissions. Once commissioned, the plant will add 1,600 MW of reliable baseload generation capacity to India’s grid, helping meet the country’s growing electricity demand driven by industrial expansion, urbanisation and infrastructure development.

GPS Renewables to Build India's Ist Ethanol-to-Jet SAF Plant at NTPC's Green Hydrogen Hub, Andhra Pradesh

GPS Renewables (GPSR), a leading global full-stack renewable oil & gas company, has been awarded the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract by NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) Limited to construct India’s first Ethanol-to-Jet (ETJ) Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant. The plant will be located at NTPC Green Energy Limited's (NGEL) Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh. 

As the primary contractor, GPS Renewables will deliver the project with its technology and engineering partners. Lummus Technology will provide the ETJ technology license and basic engineering for the process. Xytel India, a specialist in skid-mounted, modular, and fully automated pilot/mini plant solutions, will provide detailed engineering for the core process package.

GPS Renewables, supported by Lummus, will lead all engineering, including the Hydrogen Generation Package, and Offsites and Utilities, along with procurement, construction, start-up, and commissioning.

The plant will produce 1,800 tonnes per annum (TPA) SAF using ethanol derived from CO2. The plant will use a demonstrated process chain: ethanol-to-ethylene conversion, olefins oligomerisation, and hydroprocessing to produce SAF and renewable diesel.

GPS Renewables' scope runs through March 2029, covering full project construction and commissioning, and 1 year of operation post commissioning.

NTPC REL Achieves Full Commercial Operation of 150 MW Gujarat Solar PV Project

NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy Limited has successfully declared the commercial operation of the final 60 MW capacity of its 150 MW Gujarat Solar PV Project, marking the full commissioning of the project in Limbdi, Gujarat.

This solar venture was awarded under the GUVNL 500 MW Solar (Phase XII) tender.

The last segment of 60 MW commenced commercial operation on April 16, 2025. This follows the earlier commissioning of the first 60 MW on July 29, 2024, and the second 30 MW on December 11, 2024.

With this milestone, the entire 150 MW capacity of the Gujarat Solar PV Project is now operational, reinforcing NTPC REL’s commitment to advancing India’s renewable energy goals and supporting the nation’s clean energy transition.

Serentica Renewables, a leading renewable energy provider in India, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NTPC Limited for the supply of 200 MW of Firm Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) to Uttar Pradesh’s distribution companies (DISCOMS). ONGC NTPC Green Private Limited (ONGPL), a 50:50 Joint Venture Company of NTPC Green Energy Limited and ONGC Green Limited, has completed the acquisition of 100% equity stake in Ayana Renewable Power Private Limited on 27th March 2025.

Ayana, a leading renewable energy platform, has capacity of approx. 4112 MW (2123 MW of operational and 1989 MW under-construction assets), strategically located across resource-rich states. Its portfolio is backed by high-credit-rated off-takers such as SECI, NTPC, GUVNL, and Indian Railways.

With this acquisition, the total operating capacity of #NTPCGreen Energy Limited reaches 5.9 GW, including its subsidiaries & JVs, as on date.

Ayana's assets are strategically located in resource-rich states and backed by high-credit-rated offtakers like SECI, NTPC, and Indian Railways, enhancing ONGC NTPC Green's market presence. 

Ayana's portfolio of 4,112 MW, including operational and under-construction assets, significantly boosts ONGC NTPC Green's renewable energy capacity. 

The acquisition aligns with NTPC Green's goal of reaching 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032.

NTPC Group Inks MoUs with Govt of MP at Global Investors Summit, Set to Invest over Rs 2 Lakh Crore in MP

It includes renewable projects based on Solar, Wind, Pump Hydro and other carbon neutral energy sources in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

The first MoU was signed between NGEL and Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited (MPPGCL) for setting up Renewable Energy projects up to 20 GW or more in the state, at an approximate investment of Rs. 1,20,000 Crore. This has paved the way for formation of a Joint Venture Company (JVC), which will help in mitigating the Renewable Generation Obligation (RGO) of Madhya Pradesh Generating Company as well as Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) of Madhya Pradesh DISCOMs.

The second MOU was signed between NTPC Ltd. & Govt. of MP for other sustainable non-fossil fuel power plants at an estimated investment of Rs. 80,000 Crores. Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL), has signed this MOU on behalf of the state Govt.

An agreement was also signed between Govt. of MP & NTPC, pertaining to an intent to invest approximately Rs 4,000 Crores in setting up 800 MW of Pumped Hydro Storage Project in the state.

The MoUs were signed in the presence of the Dr Mohan Yadav, Hon’ble Chief Minister of MP and Shri Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC Ltd. along with other senior officials of Govt of MP & NTPC Ltd and will play a significant role in promoting sustainable energy solutions while strengthening GOI's efforts towards energy transition and Net Zero targets.

NTPC, EDF to Collaborate on Pumped Storage, Hydro Projects & RE Opportunities

NTPC Limited, a Maharatna company of India and EDF India Private Limited, owned by Électricité de France SA, a French multinational electric utility company owned by the Government of France, have signed a non-binding Term Sheet and collaborated to develop (including construction), own, operate and maintain pumped storage project(s) and/or any other hydro power project(s) or Hydro Project(s) bundled with other Renewable Energy projects and explore opportunities in distribution business.

The agreement was signed by Mr Federico D’Amico, CEO (EDF India) and Shri J C Kakoti, GM-Hydro Engineering (NTPC) in the presence of Shri Gurdeep Singh, CMD (NTPC) and Mr Luc Rémont, Chairman and CEO (EDF France). The MOU signing ceremony was graced by Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Ministry of Power, GOI). Mr Patrick Charignon, Executive Vice President, APAC (EDF), Shri Goutam Deb, RED-Hydro (NTPC), Ms Sangeeta Kaushik, ED-Corporate Planning (NTPC) and senior officials from NTPC and EDF were also present on the occasion.

Subsequent to the signing of the term sheet on 23rd February 2025, during Elecrama 2025, NTPC and EDF propose to form a JVC with 50: 50 Partnership after requisite approval from the Government of India.

This JVC will undertake such Project(s) on its own and / or may create JV and Subsidiaries (“Project SPV”) for undertaking such Project(s) within India and neighbouring countries. Considering their domain expertise and resources, both NTPC & EDF are poised to contribute significantly to India's renewable energy landscape, driving innovation and fostering environmental stewardship and will leverage its expertise for tailormade offers, drive the decarbonization and global performance of electrical systems.

NTPC Signs PPA with Indian Army for Sale of Power

NTPC and Indian Army signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) on 3rd February for sale of power (200 kW RE-RTC) from Solar-Hydrogen based Microgrid at Chushul (Ladakh) for a period of 25 years.

The agreement was signed by Shri DMR Panda, CGM (NTPC-Hydrogen) and Shri Aditya Harshey, Brigadier and Chief Engineer (Indian Army), Leh.

Solar-Hydrogen based microgrid offers a solution to replace Army’s existing diesel gensets thus avoiding fossil fuel logistics arrangement and 1500 ton/year CO2.

This is world’s most unique hydrogen based off-grid microgrid project at an altitude of 4400m and temperatures dipping to -30 deg C in winter. Once operational, it would usher in a new era of decarbonisation and modernisation of the defence sector in the border locations of the Himalayas.

NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), has emerged as a successful bidder in the e-reverse auction conducted by NHPC Limited. The tender aimed at the “Selection of Solar Power Developers for Setting up of 1200 MW (1.2 GW) ISTS (Inter State Transmission System) Connected Solar Power Projects with 600MW/1200MWh Energy Storage Systems (ESS) on an anywhere-in-India basis under Tariff Based Competitive Bidding with Green Shoe Option.”

NTPC REL secured a capacity of 300MW at a tariff of ₹3.09/kWh. In line with the Request for Selection (RFS) conditions, the project will include the establishment of an Energy Storage System (ESS) with a capacity of 150MW/300MWh, ensuring enhanced reliability and efficiency of the solar power generation.

The auction was concluded on 23rd January 2025, and NTPC REL is now awaiting the issuance of the Letter of Award (LOA) from NHPC Limited.

NTPC Limited, India's largest integrated power company, has partnered with US based Clean Core Thorium Energy (Clean Core) to explore the development and deployment of ANEEL™ fuel for Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). This collaboration aims to leverage thorium-based nuclear fuel technology to enhance India's energy security and sustainability.

Advanced Nuclear Energy for Enriched Life (ANEEL™) is a new nuclear fuel developed by Clean Core, a Chicago-based company founded by Mehul Shah.

ANEEL™ is a mix of Thorium and Uranium enriched to a certain level, known as High Assay Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU).

The name ANEEL™ honors Dr. Anil Kakodkar, one of India's foremost nuclear scientists.

The collaboration aims to minimize the use of Uranium-235 by leveraging Thorium, which India has in abundance. ANEEL™ can be used in existing Pressurized Heavy-Water Reactors (PHWRs), which are a significant part of India's nuclear fleet.

It was in last month only when Clean Core announced that its patented ANEEL™ fuel has reached a groundbreaking burnup milestone in the Advanced Test Reactor at Idaho National Laboratory. With this, Clean Core's first-of-its-kind, thorium-based ANEEL™ fuel moves a step closer to commercialization.

ANEEL™ can fast-track India's transition to green energy by efficiently utilizing Thorium reserves. Spent ANEEL fuel cannot be used for weapons, enhancing nuclear non-proliferation efforts. It can help India achieve its net-zero target by 2070 and ensure energy security.

L&T Energy CarbonLite Solutions, a business vertical of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has recently received a Limited Notice to Proceed (LNTP) from NTPC Ltd for setting up thermal power plants in Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.

The orders pertain to main plant packages of 2x800 MW Stage-II thermal power plant at Gadarwara in Madhya Pradesh and 3x800 MW Stage-II thermal power plant at Nabinagar in Bihar.

The scope of work involves design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection and commissioning of boilers, turbines, electrostatic precipitators (ESP), auxiliaries, along with the related mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and civil works.

The orders pertain to main plant packages for a 2×800 MW Stage-ll thermal power plant at Gadarwara in Madhya Pradesh and a 3x800 MW Stage-ll thermal power plant at Nabinagar in Bihar. 

The scope includes design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, and commissioning of boilers, turbines, electrostatic precipitators (ESP), auxiliaries, along with related mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and civil works.

The value of the order is estimated to be more than Rs 1, 500 crore.

L&T aims to deliver these projects with exceptional outcomes, meeting their high standards of execution within a strict timeline.

NTPC and the Indian Army have partnered to establish a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid in Chushul, Ladakh. This project aims to provide a stable, year-round power supply using green hydrogen, replacing existing diesel generators.

The microgrid will supply 200kW of power round-the-clock throughout the year. This NTPC designed Solar Hydrogen-based microgrid system will operate independently and use hydrogen as an energy storage medium.

This initiative promotes carbon neutrality and reduces logistics dependencies in harsh, high-altitude conditions.

NTPC will maintain the project for 25 years, ensuring long-term sustainability. This system will replace existing diesel gensets at off-grid Army locations, providing a sustainable power supply despite harsh winter conditions, where temperatures drop to -30°C at an altitude of 4,400 meters.

Ladakh's high solar irradiance and low temperatures facilitate this project to produce and utilize green energy and eliminate reliance on fuel logistics and enhance self-sufficiency in remote areas.

In addition to the Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid project in Chushul, NTPC is involved in several other initiatives in Ladakh. NTPC has initiated a trial run of hydrogen buses in Leh to promote sustainable transportation, and is setting up a hydrogen fuelling station and a solar plant in Leh, in collaboration with Indiam army.

NTPC is introducing five fuel cell buses for intracity routes in Leh. NTPC is advancing various decarbonisation initiatives, including hydrogen blending, carbon capture, and electric buses.

NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL), the renewable energy arm of NTPC, has filed draft papers for an initial public offering (IPO) to raise approximately $1.2 billion (around Rs 10,000 crore). The proceeds from this IPO will be used to repay loans and for general corporate purposes.

This move aligns with India's broader push towards expanding its renewable energy capacity, aiming to add at least 500 GW of clean energy by 2030. NTPC Green Energy currently has 3.3 GW of installed capacity and plans to significantly increase this in the coming years.

NGEL has partnered with Suzlon to develop India’s largest wind energy project, which will power approximately three million homes. This project involves the installation of 370 wind turbine generators in Gujarat

NGEL also has multiple solar power projects across India, contributing significantly to the country’s renewable energy capacity. Apart from solar and wind, NGEL is also investing in the production of green hydrogen and green methanol, which are cleaner fuels manufactured using renewable energy.

The company is also exploring advanced energy storage solutions to enhance the reliability and efficiency of renewable energy. NGEL is working on converting waste into energy, further diversifying its renewable energy portfolio.

These projects are part of NGEL’s broader strategy to achieve 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032.

Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd (ASHVINI) is a joint venture between the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and NTPC Ltd. This venture, with NPCIL holding 51% equity and NTPC holding 49%, has been established to build, own, and operate nuclear power plants in India.

On Tuesday, the Indian government granted formal approval to ASHVINI, allowing it to take over the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP), which will utilize indigenous Pressurized Heavy-Water Reactor (PHWR) technology and have a capacity of 2800 MW.

In addition to MBRAPP, ASHVINI shall also pursue other nuclear power projects in different parts of the country.

The Department of Atomic Energy, on September 17, 2024, formally handed over the government approval to Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd (ASHVINI) to the respective CMDs of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) and NTPC Ltd.

This move is expected to accelerate nuclear power capacity addition in India, contributing to the country's ambitious targets for nuclear energy and its Net Zero emissions goal by 2070.

Gurugram and NTPC to Ink Agreement for Waste-To-Charcoal Plant Using Torrefaction Tech

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) is set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Thermal Power Corporation on July 10 for the establishment of its first 'waste-to-charcoal plant' at the Bandhwari landfill, said media reports including Hindustan Times.

Once fully operational, this plant will convert 600 metric tons of waste generated from the city into 200 metric tons of coal daily. The initiative follows the cancellation of Ecogreen Energy’s contract for solid waste management, which had left MCG in a bind over new waste processing tenders.

To recall, in mid of the last month, the Haryana state government has declared a municipal solid waste exigency in Gurugram due to alarming levels of untreated waste adversely affecting the environment and public health. Under Section 22 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the state government has launched the Solid Waste Environment Exigency Program (SWEEP).

The Urban Waste to Charcoal Plant will utilize torrefaction technology, making the resultant flue gases easier to clean and the final product, torrefied charcoal, hydrophobic with a high heating value similar to conventional coal.

The Plant will be established by NTPC and is expected to be completed within 18 months. In a recent test, 50 metric tons of waste has successfully converted into green charcoal.

Torrefaction technology is a thermal treatment process that converts biomass (such as wood, agricultural residues, or organic waste) into a more energy-dense and stable material. To give the overview of process involved in Torrefaction technology, biomass is heated in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic conditions) at temperatures typically between 200°C and 300°C. The process removes moisture and volatile compounds from the biomass, leaving behind a solid product known as "torrefied biomass" or "biochar."

Torrefied biomass has a higher energy content per unit weight compared to raw biomass. It can be used as a renewable fuel for heat and power generation.

The torrefaction process reduces the hygroscopic nature of biomass, making it less prone to absorbing moisture during storage and transportation.

Torrefied biomass produces fewer emissions (such as sulfur and nitrogen compounds) during combustion. It can replace coal in existing power plants, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, torrefied biomass can be compressed into pellets or briquettes for residential heating or industrial use.

In one of its green applications, Biochar resulting from torrefaction can enhance soil quality and carbon sequestration.

In summary, torrefaction improves biomass properties, making it a valuable resource for sustainable energy and waste management.

NTPC and CEA Conduct National Workshop on Pumped Storage Projects at PMI, Noida

NTPC, India’s largest integrated power company in collaboration with the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), successfully organized a two day National Level Workshop on the "Standardization of Technical Specification for Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs)” at the Power Management Institute (PMI) in Noida. The aim of the workshop was to foster collaboration and synergy among PSP developers, civil execution agencies, electro-mechanical equipment manufacturers, consultants, and government authorities.

Shri MAKP Singh, Member (Hydro), CEA and Shri KS Sundaram, Director (Projects), NTPC, graced the inaugural session in the presence of Shri S.N. Tripathi, RED (Hydro), NTPC, and other senior officials.

The workshop saw the participation of over 200 delegates from various Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs), State PSUs, government departments, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and other technocrats from across the country. The other notable attendees included representatives from CEA, CWC, GSI, EDF, the Embassy of France, Ukraine, L&T, Tata Projects, AFCONS, RVNL, Andritz Hydro, Voith Hydro, Power Machines, and BHEL.

Pumped Storage Project is an economical large-scale energy storage system that is domestically available and can balance excess energy generation from the Variable RE sources during non-peaking hours and rising grid demand during peak hours to provide stability to Grid and RTC power to consumers.

During the workshop, Policy framework and statutory clearance requirements for PSPs were explained by the Central Electricity Dept. Policies and methodology for forest clearances and Environmental clearances for detailed project report (DPR) were explained by officials from MoEF &CC. Moreover, Heavy civil construction giants Tata Projects, L&T, RVNL, made their presentation and highlighted how innovative methodologies & technological and risk sharing measures will facilitate in achieving timely completion of the Pumped Storage Projects. M/s Greenko who is executing the Pinnapuram PSP in Andhra Pradesh has presented issues & challenges for the development of PSPs.

Equipment manufacturers Andritz Hydro and Voith Hydro brought technical insights to standardize the EM equipment for PSPs. They emphasised involving the OEMs right from the conceptualization stage for basic design which can save time for model studies & manufacturing of EM equipment.

The concluding session was chaired by Shri MAKP Singh, Member (Hydro), CEA, in the presence of Shri S.L. Kapil, Ex-Executive Director, NHPC, Shri R.P. Ahirwar, Head of Project, Koldam, NTPC, and Shri J.C. Kakoti, GM (Hydro Engineering), NTPC.

NTPC is currently pursuing 8900 MW of PSPs across the country, with the Upper Bhavani PSP (1000 MW) recently allocated to NTPC by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
