Open Credit Enablement Network (OCEN) will Revolutionise Micro Lending: Nandan Nilekeni

The first day of Global Fintech Fest 2020 - the largest two-day, virtual fintech meet-up witnessed the grand confluence of industry veterans and thought leaders in the Fintech & BFSI ecosystems across the globe. The two-day fest is organised by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), Fintech Convergence Council (FCC) and Payments Council of India (PCI).

Speaking at the largest two-day, virtual fintech meet-up – Global Fintech Fest 2020, Shri Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog said the future of lending will be Phygital. Betting big on digital lending he stated the latter will be the next big driver in fintech, driven by retail loans. Digital lending will constitute 50% of total lending by 2023. Kant said that the financial technology sector has been the shining star of India’s startup and technology ecosystem, enabling seamless transition from physically connected to a physically distant but socially connected environment.

Addressing the delegates, Nandan Nilekani - Co-founder and Non-Executive Chairman of the Board, Infosys stated that democratising credit in India is the need of the hour as he captured the remarkable journey of the Indian fintech industry which had now become a global hot bed for innovation. According to him, for reviving the economy India needs to kick-start consumption, offer credit a larger role whilst lubricating small businesses with capital.

India needs to go that extra mile in offering credit to the most deserving, smallest businesses and individuals. With most credit directed to large companies in large volumes, smaller companies and micro enterprises are left in the lurch with little or no access to credit at all which is a huge concern for the next growth phase of the industry he said. According to Nilekani, Open Credit Enablement Network (OCEN) which enables to connect lenders to marketplaces and thereby to borrowers is a technology system, currently under discussion. If implemented, the technology can democratise lending to micro enterprises and street vendors in a big way.

Moreover, with the cost of lending being too high, small value loans become unfeasible. He therefore suggested, account aggregator service protocols developed and backed by RBI can be the game changer. While it can be implemented across fintech firms like wealth management, broking and banking, he highlighted the fact that the latter, most importantly and immediately, needs to be implemented in lending so the well-deserving smaller and micro businesses are able to opt for loans.

Citing the examples of home-grown innovations such as – UPI and AEPS, he highlighted the fact that there is a need to realise that public systems need to be designed keeping in mind not just the top 50 million users but the 1 billion users, the masses.

State Bank of India (SBI) chairman Rajnish Kumar said “Mobile banking may become the most preferred banking channel, even more than internet banking, in the days to come. Out of 100 transactions at SBI, only 9 transactions are being made in branches. While transactions at ATMs at the time of demonetisation were around 55 per cent, now they are down to around 30 per cent and digital, mobile banking has seen a rise from 25-30 to 55 per cent now. Going ahead it is going to be internet banking and mobile banking that will flourish, Kumar said delivering a key note address at the Global Fintech Fest.

In his opening address, Dilip Asbe, Managing Director and CEO, NPCI said: “The phenomenal success of our home-grown platform of UPI and the global recognition it received is a testimony in itself as to how far we have come as a nation - from being followers to innovators and pioneers in the industry. The pandemic has been a great catalyst for the industry and we aim to develop an eco-system where digital transactions are executed remotely, possibly by majority of our population. We appreciate the concerted efforts of the government authorities in offering the necessary tailwinds in promoting the industry.”

Earlier in the day, Naveen Surya, Chairman, Fintech Convergence Council said “India, currently, is a very fertile ground for the progression of collaborations between banks and fintech, accelerating the growth of nascent sectors like - neo-banking and digital lending. The role of non-banks in growth of UPI, BBPS and PPI has been sizeable. The phenomenal funding and global attention attracted by sectors like – payments, lending and wealth-tech speaks volumes of the kind of impact the Indian fintech has had on the society and the world at large. With low-cost, high-volume transactions across payment technology, digital banking and lending, fintech has helped serve millions in a way that the legacy systems couldn’t. Aadhaar kyc and video kyc is the future and will pick up pace extensively in the near term.”

The Global Fintech Fest has witnessed a participation from 50+ countries, 100+ speakers and 10000+ registered delegates in attendance. Significantly, 45% are international speakers and 30% women speaker participation. Of the total delegate participation, around 30% are from international community. In addition, there are 75 Indian and international 75 exhibitors showcasing their products and services in the two-day fest. Global Fintech Festival has brought together representatives of banking, financial technology and investment industries from across the globe to host impactful dialogues, public discussions and a curated exhibition of the latest disruptive technologies.

Topics such as Intelligent Connectivity, ADAS Adoption & Exploring Vehicle Autonomy, Simulation & Testing, Emerging Technologies like AI, ML, Blockchain, Speech & Voice Recognition, Intelligent Cloud & Data Management, M2M & IoT Solutions in Smart City Mobility, Connected Vehicle Cyber Security and Automotive Telematics are just a few among many of the hot topics that will give the audience an insight into the future of vehicles. Utmost care has been taken in choosing the topics that are relevant to the present times and will help in coming out with the solutions to make the future more connected and sustainable.

“With an aim to create a highly interactive, knowledge-sharing and networking platform for the connected and autonomous vehicle ecosystem, Connected Vehicle 2020 will drive new business opportunities and foster innovation,” further added by Maneesh Prasad.

Our BusConnect portal helps fleet owners to manage their fleet more efficiently and reap better profits. We are happy to have the chance to explain this cutting-edge technology at Connected Vehicle 2020.”

“I would like to thank Telematics Wire for organizing ‘Connected Vehicle 2020' which brings the connected vehicles industry closer to the stakeholders and gives an opportunity to showcase the emerging technologies in the connected vehicle space. At Piaggio, we believe in providing path-breaking solutions in the last mile transportation segment with best in class technology offerings to our customers. Demystifying AI and RPA Technologies for the Indian BFSI & NBFC Sectors

The BFSI sector seems to be raring to go on the AI and automation front, harnessing the maximum advantage of market opportunities. Indian banks such as State Bank of India (SBI) and Bank of Baroda are already betting big on AI. Speaking of the Indian NBFC sector that has been facing a rough stretch due to the recent liquidity crises, India’s shadow banks are seeing a sign of silver lining by revamping their lending processes through state-of-the-art technologies such as AI, Analytics, ML and Automation. Everything from algorithms for alternate credit scores, fraud detection and customer on-boarding, the tech driven NBFC industry has the potential for huge business growth in India. However, being the IT capital of South Asia and a leader in producing IT infrastructure and manpower, where does India stand as a potential contender in the race for AI and RPA leadership among top countries like South Korea, the United States, Germany, Singapore and Japan?

“We are headed into the post-digital era which is creating a whole new market entirely. It has become imperative to keep pace with emerging technologies like AI and RPA that are changing the face of modern businesses. AI-powered applications will help create value by augmenting business processes, especially in the banking sector where customer-centricity is central”, said Sunit Vakharia, CIO of Bank of Baroda Financial Services Limited, who will be sharing more of his views at the upcoming World AI Show (BFSI & NBFC), taking place on 20 September 2019 at the Taj Lands End in Mumbai. Speaking at the event, MrRajaneesh Dasgupta, Director General, Association of Infrastructure Industry (India), said, “Madhya Pradeshis at the cusp of stupendous progress, and this cannot be complete without the development of infrastructure. The first session focused on the real estate scenario in India and its implications on the state of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal. The other subsequent sessions were focused towards everything from public and surface transport to the concept of smart cities. The speakers gave some very interesting insights on these issues.

Speakers `also spoke about building a community system where issues such as mobility, housing, employment opportunities, education and wellness are designed in an integrated manner, to the contentment of every individual. They discussed how this can be enabled if there is a planned shift in the concept of co-existing. An interesting conversation on Smart Cities was organized towards the end of the event.

This Independence Day finally gave something to Entrepreneurs to cheer about. BootUpIndia was launched on 15th August 2014 on the eve of India’s 68th Independence Day. It is an initiative by iSPIRT which is looking out to help bootstrapped entrepreneurs and startups.

iSPIRT strongly believes that company building can take place both through Venture Funding and Bootstrapping. Though, in India the scene is a little different. The Venture Funding path is being overplayed by the incubators and media and due to this bootstrapped companies end up bearing the repercussions, but not anymore, because BootUpINDIA is here to redress this bias.

Now and then, it has been repeatedly proved that even Bootstrapped companies can also turn into successful companies. Some of the companies which have been able to turn it around are HappyFox, FusionCharts, Cosmic Circuits, Kayako, RateGain and BrowerStack. In fact, bootstrapped companies can also transform into Billion dollar companies, for example Zoho.

Venture Funding provides a startup with media validation which most of the times transforms into customer traction.  A good VC also ends up getting access and mentoring to expert entrepreneurs in the portfolio of the VC.  BootUpIndia is here to provide almost the same benefits to some selected bootstrapped companies. Their goal is to help these companies scale their game and become more successful.

The companies are selected through an awards process and the companies who make the cut are then provided with media coverage through Customer Impact stories, group mentoring from expert entrepreneurs and access to certified performance warrants for deeper customer relations, among other things.

BootUpIndia has a strong belief that their package can have a dramatic impact on the enterprise value of the selected bootstrapped companies, which in turn would help the software product industry to grow faster even with a limited availability of early stage capital.

The applications for the BootUpINDIA award are open till 15th September 2014 and the Award Day is scheduled to be held on 2nd October 2014. The BootUpINDIA awardees will get five things-Industry validations, structured group mentoring, media visibility, certified performance warrants and a lot of perks.  The perks would include a privileged access to all other iSPIRT programs. In addition to that, the awardees will get access to co-working spaces and discounts from partners including Zoho CRM, Amazon Web Services and FreshDesk.
