Free of Cost Tractor Rental Platform 'JFarm Services' Launched in Gujarat

  • ‘JFarm Services’ – India’s leading tractor and farm equipment rental platform

  • TAFE’s CSR initiative to support small and marginal farmers

  • Farmer-to-Farmer model (F2F) – Farmers can offer all brands of tractors and implements on rent

  • Aids rural entrepreneurship and generates additional revenue for farmers

TAFE’s ‘JFarm Services’ is a CSR initiative aligned to TAFE’s vision of cultivating the world to enrich the lives of farmers across India. This initiative was formally launched in Gujarat in partnership with the State Government by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri. Vijay Rupani in the presence of Shri. Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Government of India and Shri. Ranchhodbhai Chanabhai Faldu, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development & Transport, Government of Gujarat.

TAFE’s JFarm Services aims to increase easy access to farm mechanization solutions through rental of tractors and modern farm equipment to small and marginal farmers, enhancing their productivity and increasing their income significantly.

It facilitates the hiring of tractors and modern farm machinery to farmers, free of cost, through its Farmer-to-Farmer (F2F) rental platform. TAFE’s JFarm Services will collaborate with the agricultural development officers of the Gujarat Government to ensure wide outreach and successful roll-out of the platform.

Agriculture continues to be the primary occupation for the majority of rural people in Gujarat. About 52% of the working population in the state is dependent on agriculture as a source of livelihood. With majority of them being small or marginal farmers, there is tremendous potential in the state for growth and increase in productivity through farm mechanization.

Ms. Mallika Srinivasan, Chairman - TAFE, said: “India is a land of small farms. A majority of farmers in our country, almost 85% of them have no access to farm mechanization to improve their yields and income. JFarm Services is a CSR initiative that allows both - farmers offering their tractors and farm equipment on rent, and smaller farmers seeking this service, to benefit directly from the JFarm Services app. It is our aim to reach out to the farmers of Gujarat, touch the lives of millions of farmers across the country and achieve our Honorable Prime Minister’s vision of doubling farmers’ income by 2022.”

The JFarm Services App will connect tractor owners and Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs) operated by tractors and equipment owners directly to farmers seeking farm mechanization solutions, thereby facilitating a fair and transparent rental process while focusing on quality, dependability and timely delivery. JFarm Services offers the farmers and renters a wide range of prospects for hiring and renting of farm equipment and connects them directly to negotiate and fulfil their respective requirement. With this pioneering platform, TAFE brings the benefits of the technology-enabled sharing economy to boost the income of farmers.

[caption id="attachment_134792" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] JFarm Services Launched in Gujarat[/caption]

Mr. T R Kesavan, Group President (Corporate Relations & Alliances) - TAFE, said: “TAFE, in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat, has launched JFarm Services to create sustainable agricultural productivity and growth for the state through the shared economy model. This initiative will support the state in making farm mechanization available to small and marginal farmers. JFarm Services is completely transparent and is free of any hidden charges or commissions."

Farmers can hire tractors and equipment via the JFarm Services Android App or by contacting the toll-free helpline 1800-4-200-100 / 1800-208-4242. The App can be used on low-cost Android phones, is designed to run on very little data and can be used in English and Hindi apart from the various other regional languages. The
JFarm Services App is a stellar example of the Digital India initiative, tailored to benefit the Indian agricultural landscape. This service by TAFE will foster digital empowerment of Indian farmers while creating a breed of new rural entrepreneurs and significant job opportunities.

JFarm Services, besides Gujarat, has a presence in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Assam, and has directly benefitted about 314,000 users resulting in over 825,000 hours in hired farm machinery usage. In a short span of time, JFarm Services has become one of India’s largest farm equipment aggregation operators.

About ‘JFarm’ and ‘JFarm Services’

TAFE established JFarm India in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in 1964 with an objective of empowering farmers with advanced farm technologies to increase farm productivity and meet India’s growing food demands. Over the years, JFarm focuses on sustainable agriculture, adapting existing technologies in farming for local farming conditions and sharing this knowledge with farmers. JFarm Services is an initiative by TAFE to increase easy access to farm mechanization solutions through rental of tractors and farm equipment for small and large farms.

Small and marginal farmers, who hold about 85% of the land holdings in India may not be able to afford ownership of tractors or implements. JFarm Services bridges this gap by connecting these farmers with tractor and equipment owners through its Farmer-2-Farmer platform. Farmers can explore and book nearby equipment throughJFarm Services Android App OR Toll-free helpline: 1800-4-200-100 / 1800-208-4242. This free app connects tractor owners and Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs) operated by tractors and equipment owners directly to farmers seeking farm mechanization solutions, thereby facilitating a fair and transparent rental process while focusing on quality, dependability and timely delivery.

JFarm Services offers the farmers and renters a wide range of prospects for hiring and renting of farm equipment and connects them directly to negotiate and fulfill their respective requirements.

With the creation of this platform comprising farm machinery owners and users, JFarm Services has impacted the lives of about 314,000 farmers across 13 states in India since its inception in 2017.  Currently, JFarm Services (JFS) operates in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh (MP), Uttar Pradesh (UP), Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Assam besides Gujarat - making farm mechanization viable and affordable to all.

The Gujarat Government, through its Student Start-up and Innovation Policy (SSIP) programme, has lent support to as many as 4,000 innovative projects, while it braces for harnessing and upscaling 500 students' startups in the next five years.

Speaking at the inaugural of the 1st edition of a 2-day SSIP Student Annual Conference on Student Innovation, Start-ups and Ecosystem held yesterday at Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) campus, Gujarat's Principal Secretary (Education) Anju Sharma said that innovative projects including over 2,000 prototypes had already been developed and 500 of them are patented.

Speaking at the conference, State's Commissioner of Technical Education Avantika Singh said the Gujarat Government had set a goal of "harnessing as well as scaling up 500 students' startups in the next five years."

Launched in 2017, the Student Startup and Innovation Policy (SSIP) of Government of Gujarat is focused on creating an integrated, state-wide, university-based innovation ecosystem in order to support ideas and innovations of the students and offer them a conducive environment that would harness their creative pursuit.

Held at EDII on June 6 and 7, the conference saw the participation of about 155 start-ups and 118 young innovators from across the country, along with 18 academic institutions, 9 universities and 79 mentors. A total of 11 student start-ups and 5 young innovators along with 3 institutions, 3 universities and 10 mentors will receive SSIP Prashansha awards.

Prominent speakers at the event include Kris Gopalakrishnan, Chairman, Axilor Ventures. Former Executive Co-Chairman, Infosys, Dr Saji Gopinath, CEO, Kerala Startup Mission; Yashraj and Yuvraj Bhardwaj, 18-year old twin brothers who are founders of Zenith Viper; Sanjay Kumar, Founder, Start-up Village, Kritika Murugesan from NASSCOM, 10K.

In the event's stage-wise process the students are first educated about what innovation and creativity is and why is 'Design Thinking' important. The students then come up with several innovative projects "from which certain good projects that have potential are selected by the Screening Committee of their respective institutes for prototype development.

The prototypes that get developed result into startups for which further support to the students is provided by the government, including the patent fees and patent consultancy. Around 4,000 such innovative projects are supported.

Among the start-ups, 'Bogie Sauf', an automated tire air pressure maintenance system from Government Engineering College in Dahod in central Gujarat, 'Booz- Hello Skate Mobility' from Gujarat University Startup and Entrepreneurship Council, 'Maarg Sahayaka' from Vishwakarma Government Engineering College were major attractions at a startups exhibition, which has also been organised.

Bogie Sauf

Developed by mechanical engineering students of Government Engineering College in Dahod -- Mayur Mahla, Gaurav Chale, and Kartik Patel, Bogie Sauf is a innovative system which would automatically fill air after a tyre has been punctured enabling the vehicle to ply for a distance.

The device would automatically fill air at the very moment when a tyre of a vehicle is punctured. The air filled into the tyre 'on-the-go' that is even if the vehicle is moving and the vehicle can go up to 70 km. The device stops filling up air, if the vehicle comes to a halt. The innovation can ensure the safety of women driving late at night and can also be used against dacoits, Naxalites, and even terrorists, who often plan flattening the tyres of vehicles in order to execute their bad intentions.

The students received initial funding of Rs 27,000 through Students Start-up and Innovation Policy of the state government through which they developed a prototype of one tyre and displayed their idea at the exhibition held at Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII).

The study results comes at times when entrepreneurship wave is considered to be riding high across the country and both center and state governments are encouraging students to come with startups by organizing startup yatras and other lavishing events.

Titled as "Factors affecting entrepreneurial inclination among undergraduate students in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar cities", the study revealed that while 59.7% of the total 491 respondents were aware of Startup India campaign, 40.3% responded in the negative.

Besides this unawareness, orthodox mentality of parents also come out to be the one of primary reason for keeping youths away from entrepreneurial activities as out of the total 491 respondents, 38.1% of them stated that knowledge or education of management is more important than starting one's own business, while according to 2.6% respondent parents entrepreneurship is least important. Respondents who were neutral towards entrepreneurship are 27.7% and ONLY 24.2% stated that it was most important whereas 7.3% respondents stated that it was somewhat important.

According to 41.5% students, their parents did not encourage them to start own business. However on a brighter side there were students whose parents motivated them to do so. According to 36.3% students, their father motivated, while 16.1% students said that it was their mother who motivated them.

On the other side, 26% of respondents said they were not interested in starting their own venture.

Respondents when asked whether they were interested in starting their own venture, 45.21% of 491 respondents answered in positive whereas 25.46% of them responded in negative.

According to principal investigator of the study, Viral Pandya, "Entrepreneurship and startups are the most important vehicles for acceleration of economic activities and job creation. With this objective the research was conducted among undergraduate students of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar to identify factors affecting the entrepreneurial inclination. The relationship between entrepreneurial inclinations is gender neutral."

"Both male and female students showed inclination towards entrepreneurship. Students' association with entrepreneurship related activities in universities doesn't increase the likelihood of starting their own business. Motivation from role models affects the inclination of youth towards entrepreneurship," he said.

When a total of 491 respondents were asked if funding/initial investment plays an important role in making the decision to start one's own business, 37.5% of them said that it was important, 27.5% of them maintained a neutral viewpoint towards it, 22.8% stated that it was very important, 9% of them stated that it was somewhat important whereas 3.3% of them stated that it was the least important factor in starting one's business.

According to Rahul Bhagchandani, acting CEO of Gujarat University Startup and Entrepreneurship Council, "If 60% students are aware of Startup India, it is a good number and it is increasing. Regarding entrepreneurship, most students have time after academics to seek knowledge about entrepreneurship and channelise their ideas."

Besides GNLU, an another Gujarat-based institute, Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), had revealed in its report this year that only 5% of Indians went on to establish their own business or startups, which is among the lowest rates in the world. Moreover, business discontinuation in India is among the highest in the world at 26.4%.

Ease of doing business: Bihar beats Gujarat to top chart in DIPP's real-time ranking

While Bihar might be facing some heat currently due to the faux-pas its education system has recently created, but here's some news which can surely cheer up the state.

A recently released ranking by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), has Nitish Kumar-led Bihar taking the lead over all the states and union territories in the country when it comes to steps taken to improve the ease of doing business on their land.

The ranking which saw Bihar emerge at the top, was carried out on real-time basis by the DIPP on business reforms and action plans.

While Bihar acquired the first position, it was followed by Telangana for second, Jharkhand for third and Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka for fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

According to industry experts, these rankings are dynamic in nature and might change time to time based on the various business focused initiatives the state and union territories initiate.

In what could be considered as a very encouraging news for the Eastern state, Bihar had finished at a disappointing 21st position in the final rankings of last year, but it certainly bounced back this year by finishing first with a score of 8.53%.

Commenting on the dynamic nature of the rankings, the DIPP said, it is currently in the midst of uploading and validating reforms by states, hence, and the "results and rankings displayed on this are highly dynamic".

In order to provide for a friendly but competitive business environment in the country, the now 2 years old Modi government had come up with an idea to start ranking the states on the basis of their business-friendly initiatives.

The World Bank had recently ranked Gujarat on the top among states, on the ease of doing business index but, quite surprisingly, the state has acquired a mediocre sixth position on the list calculated on real-time basis.

The commerce and industry ministry is reviewing the states on real time basis this year, making the rankings dynamic. Further, as against 91 last year, the evaluation is being carried on 340 parameters this year.

The 15 of this month i.e. June 15 is the deadline set for the States and union territories to upload the status of all their completed reforms. After that is done, the DIPP along with the help from the World Bank will release the final rankings.

According to a tweet by DIPP Secretary Ramesh Abhishek, "States are in process of uploading ease of doing biz reforms done by them on DIPP portal. Ranking to happen only in July after validation".

As of now, only 16 states have locked in their details about reform measures initiated by them on the DIPP-managed portal.
