Electric Bike Making Firm Ampere Vehicles Raises Funding from Kris Gopalakrishnan and Others

Ampere

Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan along with Venk Krishnan, CEO of NuWare and Partner NuVentures, have invested around $1 million in Ampere Vehicles Pvt Ltd, an electric bike making firm. The company will use the money for marketing and creating a good service network. Earlier the firm raised money from ace investor Ratan Tata.

This is the second investment by both Gopalakrishnan and Venk in Ampere. The duo along with Vineet Agarwal, managing director at Transport Corporation of India, and former Wipro executive Sudip Nandy invested $1.2 million in Ampere last year.


In March this year, Gopalakrishnan also backed Bangalore-based online education technology service provider Avagmah and in April, he invested in on-demand task management app MagicX.


Started in 2008, Ampere sells electric vehicles and special purpose vehicles for the differently-abled. It sells products under Angel, Bobo, Prince and V60 brands in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Swedish Student Builds Steam-Powered Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi, the famous microcomputer has recently been revamped by the hands of a Swedish student by the handle name "Alexzpro" on Svenska Elektronikforumet, a Swedish tech forum. The user shared his idea on the forum about how he can make use of an actual steam driven engine to supply power to the microcomputer.

According to the student, instead of plugging in the controls of the microcomputer directly into the electronic sockets, one can make use of steam machine that makes use of twin propane torches to heat water in a copper boiler to make the microcomputer function.During the process, steam is passed into the twin-cylinder shaped engines placed above a metal plate. After this, the steam is passed into more cylinders where the pressure drives pistons, results in powering a crankshaft. The crankshaft is connected to the flywheel which is ultimately powering a small DC motor.

SteamPi, as it is being famously called, is no doubt a great invention but it also faces a lot of challenges. The problem of Power cycling is consistent causing the computer to restart frequently. The Swedish inventor has already tried soldering on larger capacitors, but to no result.

Alexzpro invented the machine as a part of a school project and he has even shot a small video of the working engine and uploaded on the famous video sharing site YouTube.

Although SteamPi is an invention by a Swedish student, experts are calling it an invention on the lines of chindōgu, the famous Japanese art of useless inventions. A steam-powered computer completely fits the bill: it works no doubt, but it's largely an impractical but fantastic invention.

Software major, Microsoft, is on a mission to put all its server farms at the bottom of the ocean bed. No, no, the company doesn't have any bad news for you. It is actually contemplating a new approach that could make data centers much faster, greener and easier to set up.

With the cloud already taking care of our online data storage, the ocean wasn't too far away, we guess.

August 2015 saw engineers placing a giant steel capsule 30 feet underwater in the Pacific Ocean. Inside the steel capsule was a single data center rack, which was enveloped in pressurised nitrogen so as to keep it cool. The crew couldn't reach the center physically, but it really didn't matter that much because the setup worked, so far so that it successfully ran commercial tasks for Azure.

The preliminary results of Project Natick — the testing of a prototype vessel on the ocean floor — have been released after a four-month plan.

Leona Philpot is the name given to the prototype submersible. This can be considered as another shoutout to the Halo universe after Cortana and Project Spartan. According to the reports doing round, the pod was kitted out with 100 sensors so as to measure every minute aspect of the underwater conditions -- be it humidity, pressure and, perhaps one of the most important, motion. The main thought process behind the idea is that there could be a possibility of similar capsules existing beneath the surface, linked to one another in a chain, and continually generating energy from the moving seawater. In the future, there could also be a possibility of the aquatic environment being used to naturally cool off the racks.

Well, not everything is in green here. This theory does have some negatives that will need to be worked around in order for it to be super successful. The most important one is the fact that server farms usually exist inland, which is far away from metropolitan areas. Further, looking from the performance pointbof view, the locations of these servers could prove to be highly inefficient for people who live near the coastline -- in theory, placing data centers offshore could in fact reduce latency for these places.

This Pen Can 3D-Print Cells Onto Injured Body Parts

What could be considered as a big breakthrough in the medical industry if it turns out successful, a group of researchers in Australia are currently working on a 3D-printing pen called the Biopen, which will allow surgeons to draw regenerative cells onto injured body parts.

The team from University of Wollongong in Melbourne is currently showcasing its new invention in a funding competition on Thinkable.org, a site that provides scientists a research platform to showcase their innovative ideas for fans to vote on and even sponsor if them if they want to.

The Biopen will create artificial replicas of human body parts and once implanted, they will stimulate the body to regenerate itself, then to degrade naturally, dissolving in the bloodstream and eventually getting excreted from the system. The pen will allow the researchers to print with cells.

The wonderpen will let surgeons fill a bunch of healing stem cells into the wound of a patient which will help in repairing the wound.

By taking some fat cells off of a patient, scientists will be able to replicate these on a large scale, thus stocking up the ‘ink’ that can fill up the Biopen.

From thereon, the pen works pretty similar to 3 dimensional printing methods. It will deliver cell material inside a biopolymer, protected by a second layer of gel material. Both these layers are then combined and applied layer after layer onto the wounded area.

According to the team, these cells then multiply around the wound and create a “thriving community of cells".

"We are just on the outset of this project, and early funding sources (such as this competition) could make all the difference in helping us turn this idea into a clinical reality, said Cathal O’Connell, part of the team behind the revolutionary invention.

The division recently teased everyone with talks of a new wearable that had the potential to “literally” blow everyone socks off at its session held at Google I/O.

Google ATAP believes that one’s hands are the best way to interact with a device, but, unfortunately, not everything is a device. Known as Project Solis, the wearable plans to make your fingers and hands the only interface you would ever require. It's essentially a tiny radar-based sensor that lets you control devices with your fingers as the interface – no touchscreen required.

In order to make this thing come true; the wearable is actually a radar that is so tiny that it fits easily into a wearable like smartwatch for example. The tiny radar will be able to pick one’s movements in real-time and use those movements to alter its signals.

When at rest, the hand actually moves slightly, which ends up as a baseline response on the tiny radar. Moving your hand from one side to another in relation to the tiny radar will also end up changing the amplitude and signal. Crossing your finger or folding it into a fist also affects the signal and changes it.

In order to make sense and use of the signal to a service or an application, ATAP plans to make use of APIs that will enter into the deep machine learning of the wearable.

Microsoft Unveils 'Edge' To Replace Internet Explorer Browser

Get ready to say goodbye to your old buddy Internet Explorer. Though many of us don’t use it anymore and have moved on to fatser alternatives like Google Chrome and Firefox but many of us still have internet Explorer installed in hope of using it someday incase of some emergency.

This farewell time has arrived because Microsoft, the giant behind Internet Explorer, has something bigger and better for all of us.

Called the Edge, the new web browser was kept under wraps as 'Project Spartan' so far.The new browser is expected to be lighter and much more faster than the Internet Explorer.

Microsoft Edge is Internet Explorer's replacement. The minimalistic "chrome-free" web browser is designed to put websites up front and dispense of everything else — including icons and menus that could potentially slow page loads.

The all-new Windows 10 browser built to give you a better web experience. Write directly on webpages and share your mark-ups with others. Read online articles free of distraction or use the offline reading feature for greater convenience. Microsoft Edge is the new browser that works the way you do.

On the top of all this, the new browser would come with some super amazing new features like a distraction free reading mode, a personal voice assistant app for windows, built-in notation tool and website information powered by Cortana.

"Microsoft Edge is the browser built for Windows 10, and it will be available on the widest range of Windows 10 devices," said Joe Belfiore, Corporate vice president, operating systems group,Microsoft, at Build 2015, a conference of developers.

Stating the reason behind the unique name, Belfiore said, "For us the name refers to the idea of being on the edge of consuming and creating."

"It refers to the developer notion of being closest to the modern capabilities of the Web," he added.

The browser will be different from all the current browsers as it will be able to understand what the user wants and give him/her exactly that. Edge with its built-in Cortana will have the capability to learn and understand the things that the user cares about. The browser would even help the user in getting those things done.
The software giant has already tested it a lot of times and is quite optimistic about its product this time.

Microsoft Edge hosts a new rendering engine, Microsoft EdgeHTML. This engine is focused on modern web standards, allowing web developers to build and maintain one consistent site that supports all modern browsers. This greatly simplifies the hard work of building first class web sites, allowing more time and energy for web developers to focus on reliability and security rather than the complexities of interoperability.

Further, the Edge would even give the users to try their hand at Web coding.
"Now, there's another big thing that we're doing in Microsoft Edge that has huge relevance to you.

"That is enabling users to engage with your sites and give you a shot at starting to write some Web code, which you may put into an app via Web extensions built into Microsoft Edge," Belfiore said.

Additionally, Microsoft Edge is also Microsoft's first web browser to have its voice assistant Cortana directly integrated. Speak naturally to Cortana about anything. Cortana can chat, get info, and do things for you.

Though Edge is a successor to the existing Internet Explorer but the software giant has decided to keep the latter for now. The new browser will only be available for Windows 10 and further.

Startup From Chennai Develops Tiny Smart-Car Device

We have everything;from Smartphone to Smart TV to smart watch and just when you thought nothing can be made much smarter, a new smart device comes in the market to prove us wrong.

This time it’s a smart car, a car which notifies you when your car will run completely out of fuel, a car which will be able to detect the nearest fuel station, a car which will make driving a smooth experience for you.
Created by a Chennai based startup called Fuel Book Technology, this tiny device has the capability to turn any car into a smart car. Deepak John J came up with the idea for Fuel Book through his own experience. Once while driving, his car ran completely dry and he was stranded in the middle of nowhere. That's when the idea of a smart car struck Deepak's mind. Accompanied by an app, the device is self-installable and has the potential to create a smart vehicle right through any car's diagnostic port.

The startup has currently developed a working prototype of Fuelbook and close to entering production stage and for same they have crowdfunding this Smart Car device on Indiegogo and til now managed to get in just 9days an amount of $854USD out of $50,000 USD pledged.

The device is very easy to use. Once you have plugged it in your car, you’re required to download the application and launch it. The next step involves syncing the device over Bluetooth and Voila; you’ve now successfully turned your dumb car into a smart one.

The Fuel Book will not only tell the driver when his/her car will completely run out of fuel but also detect the nearest fuel station and ATM to help them. Along with this, the device also comes with a feature that will allow the user to unlock their car door right from their phones and save time.

Traffic is the biggest dread of a driver and this tiny device makes sure that its users don’t have to face this dread anymore. Using the device, the users will be able to transform their horns into a smart sensing apparatus that will send a message to the driver in the front and know the reason for the hold-up. If you’re one of those drivers who hate surprise bumps or breakers in their way, then don’t you worry because you won’t be getting any such surprises in future. The Fuel Book comes with a special social territory mapping feature that will alert the driver ten seconds prior to a bump in their way.

The device has a built-in accelerometer which takes care of the car’s speed. In the time of emergency, the device will share the driver’s GPS coordinates with his/her registered emergency contact through SMS or with the help of another Fuel Book using the “tag mode” feature.

The device has another super feature called the Al Engine that will collect and send the driver’s behavior data. Based on the user’s travelling history, the device will be able to detect when or where will he/she take a turn or when he/she will hit a break or accelerate. This feature will send a smart notification if there’s any trouble ahead in the way.

The tiny wonder device has an Atmel Smart Cortex-M3 MCU, a temperature sensor, a magnetometer, three-axis accelerometer, and has both RF connectivity and Bluetooth for pairing. The Fuel Book is compatible with iOS, Windows and Android smartphones and even works with Android Wear and Pebble smart watches. It is expected to hit the market November this year.

CarIQ, a Pune based startup has also developed an IoT device somewhat similar to Fuel Book.

First Time In India - Surgeon Uses 3D-Printed Surgical Tool To Repair A 16 Year Old’s Broken Hip

Ever imagined 3D printing and medical field coming together? Sure, it does sounds like apples and oranges but believe it or not, 2014 saw the mixing of these two fields for the betterment of humankind. A lot of inspirational stories emerged in the past year in the medical field due to 3D printing and this happened not only in abroad but also in India. More and more medical professionals have now started recognizing the potential that 3D printing holds in making surgeries easy and saving human lives.

One such Indian doctor who recently recognized the potential and got benefited from the mixing of the two fields is Nagpur based Dr. Vaibhav Bagaria. The doctor made use of the 3D printing technology on a 16 year old boy, who was in extremely bad shape due to a very serious motor vehicle accident. The boy suffered a fracture of his acetabulum and a pelvic fracture with disruption of his pelvic ring in the accident. Dr. Vaibhav zeroed down on using 3D printing for the surgery so as to reduce surgery risks and save money and medication for his sixteen year old patient.

A typical surgery on a patient’s acetabulum requires a lot of precision and knowledge as the surgery is considered very challenging and risky. The patient always runs the risks of losing a significant amount of blood in this kind of a surgery.

Dr. Bagaria incorporated 3D printing into the surgery by creating a “3D patient optimized surgical tool” or a 3D post. He started out by taking a CT scan of the fracture and the surrounding area and then 3D printed a 1:1 scale model of the injury. This model of the injury allowed the Nagpur based doctor and his team of doctors get prepared for the real surgery. Dr. Bagaria further used the 3D model to create a seven-hole reconstruction plate that was pre-contoured. The model was also used by the doctor to carry out a surgical stimulation before carrying out the real surgery. The 3D printed model allowed the surgeons to drill the screw trajectories, measure the screw lengths required and confirm the positions of the plate. The 3D model was sterilized and used for intraoperative referencing during the real procedure.

At the end, the surgery was successful and a major chunk of its success goes to the 3D printed model of the injury.  The model allowed the surgeons to reduce the surgery time, cost and the anaesthetics required for the sixteen year old. The doctor and his team of surgeons were successful in achieving a near-perfect fracture reduction and the 3D printed model was then used as an educational tool for the surgical residents.

Stunning NASA Video Exposes CO2 Path Across The Globe

A NASA supercomputer has created a ultra-high-resolution simulation model which has given scientists a stunning new look at how carbon dioxide in the atmosphere travels around the globe.

NASA built the simulation with the NASA Center for Climate Simulation's Discover supercomputer cluster at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The high-resolution simulation, which took 75 days to complete, uses actual Co2 emissions data from May 2005 to June 2007.

Plumes of carbon dioxide in the simulation swirl and shift as winds disperse the greenhouse gas away from its sources. The simulation also illustrates differences in carbon dioxide levels in the northern and southern hemispheres and distinct swings in global carbon dioxide concentrations as the growth cycle of plants and trees changes with the seasons.

NASA has also created simulation of CO2 emission in Asia & Himalayan region. In below video of view of Asia including India, two things stand out: the major emissions sources of the industrialized Asian countries, and the natural barrier of the Himalayas. As carbon dioxide concentrations swirl and move eastward, the Himalayas – the crescent-shaped mountain range just north of India – redirect winds. Scientists have made ground-based measurements of carbon dioxide for decades and in July NASA launched the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite to make global, space-based carbon observations. But the simulation – the product of a new computer model that is among the highest-resolution ever created – is the first to show in such fine detail how carbon dioxide actually moves through the atmosphere.
