Tesla says its Cars Automatically Stop for Traffic Lights

After testing on public roads, Tesla is rolling out a new feature of its partially automated driving system designed to spot stop signs and traffic signals.

The update of the electric car company's cruise control and auto-steer systems is a step toward CEO Elon Musk's pledge to convert cars to fully self-driving vehicles later this year.

But it also runs contrary to recommendations from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board that include limiting where Tesla's Autopilot driving system can operate because it has failed to spot and react to hazards in at least three fatal crashes.

[caption id="attachment_144778" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Traffic Aware Cruise Control – Traffic-Aware Cruise Control maintains the car’s speed in relation to surrounding traffic.[/caption]

In a note sent to a group of Tesla owners who were picked to test the stop light and sign recognition feature, the company said it can be used with the Traffic Aware Cruise Control or Autosteer systems.

The feature will slow the car whenever it detects a traffic light, including those that are green or blinking yellow. It will notify the driver of its intent to slow down and stop, and drivers must push down the gear selector and press the accelerator pedal to confirm that it's safe to proceed.

The company warns in the note obtained by The Associated Press that drivers must pay attention and be ready to take immediate action “including braking because this feature may not stop for all traffic controls.”

The note says that over time, as the system learns from the fleet on the roads, it “will control more naturally.” Tesla didn't respond to multiple requests for additional details, but the website Electrek.co reported last week that the new feature is being sent to the wider Tesla fleet as part of an over-the-Internet software update for thousands of vehicles. The feature won't come until later in other parts of the world, the website said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the US government's road safety agency, said in a prepared statement Monday that the agency “will closely monitor the performance of this technology,” adding that drivers must be ready to act and law enforcement agencies will hold them responsible.

Jason Levine, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, a nonprofit watchdog group, said Tesla is using the feature to sell cars and get media attention, even though it might not work. “Unfortunately, we'll find out the hard way,” he said.

Whenever one of its vehicles using Autopilot is involved in a crash, Tesla points to “legalese” warning drivers that they have to pay attention, Levine said. But he said Tesla drivers have a history over-relying on the company's electronics.

"Tesla's sensors have routinely demonstrated an inability to be accurate at a level that is comforting when imagining people being reliant upon it when approaching a stoplight at full speed,” Levine said.

The NTSB has ruled in three fatal crashes that Tesla's Autopilot system was partly to blame, and it has expressed frustration with NHTSA for failing to act on the board's recommendations. Last month the board, which has no regulatory powers, took the unusual step of accusing NHTSA of contributing to the cause of a March 2019 Tesla crash in Florida.

The March 1, 2019, crash in Delray Beach, Florida, killed the 50-year-old driver of a Tesla Model 3. The car was traveling 69 miles per hour (111 kilometers per hour) when neither the driver nor the Autopilot system braked or tried to avoid a tractor-trailer that was crossing in its path. The car struck the trailer, which sheared off the Tesla's roof. The report also blamed the truck and the Tesla driver in the crash.

NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said in March that the crash was the third “where a driver's overreliance on Tesla's Autopilot and the operational design of Tesla's Autopilot have led to tragic consequences.” NHTSA said it will review the NTSB's report.

The Delray Beach crash was remarkably similar to one in 2016 in Williston, Florida, which also killed a Tesla driver. In that crash neither Autopilot nor the driver stopped for a crossing tractor-trailer.

Tesla maintains that its vehicles operating on Autopilot are about twice as safe as those in which the system isn't engaged. The company says in the fourth quarter, drivers using Autopilot had one crash for every 3.07 million miles driven.

Connected Cars Poised to Become Common Phenomenon in India: Report

Connected cars are set to become a common phenomenon in the Indian market in the near future with rapid adoption of electric vehicles, according to a Deloitte report.

As per the 2020 Global Automotive Consumer Study by Deloitte, an annual report which comes up with insights on the automotive industry globally, the Indian market is expected to witness enhanced interest and demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and connected vehicles going forward.

"Connected cars are poised to become a common phenomenon in India in the near future. And their relevance in the next few years is only bound to increase with the expected wide-scale adoption of EVs where connectivity features will help owners locate nearby charging stations and access telematics data among several other things," the study outlined.

The consumers' willingness to pay for advanced and connected technologies has improved over the last two years which is evident in the rising sales of cars that are internet connected, despite the slowdown in sale of passenger vehicles, it added.

"A substantial number of people are talking about their willingness to pay about Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh extra for connected services in their cars," Deloitte India Partner Rajeev Singh said while elaborating on the findings regarding the Indian market.

Besides, the study reveals that people are looking keenly at entry of affordable products in the electric vehicle segment, Singh added.

"Moreover, in the time to come OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), are expected to struggle to get consumers to pay for advanced connectivity features, even when it means increasing road safety. The perception of Indian with respect to safety while driving connected vehicles is also very low," the study noted.

The study also stated that in India automobile OEMs are not the top choice in terms of trust for sharing of data by consumers.

Indians make up the top demographic region that is concerned about security of biometric data shared with connected vehicles, it noted.

"With the introduction of Personal Data Protection Act, the automotive industry would need to add another layer of regulation to balance benefits of connectivity with protection of consumer data," the report said.

The report also said the number of people reporting at least occasional use of ride-hailing services has increased in the last few years as consumers see multiple benefits in it. PTI MSS

Auto major Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd will be investing about $1 million (~₹ 6-Crore) in Mumbai-based connected car IoT-device making startup Carsense (formerly Carnot) for 22.9% stake in Carnot Technologies Pvt Ltd, the parent company of brand name Carsense.

The funds will used by the startup to bolster its product line by strengthening technology solutions, said a report by VCCircle.

As part of the deal, Mahindra will acquire up to 1,296 equity shares and subscribe up to 6,074 compulsorily convertible cumulative preference shares of Carnot Technologies, said Mahindra, in a stock-exchange disclosure.

Founded in 2015 by IIT Bombay alumni Urmil Shah, Pushkar Limaye, Rohan Vadgaonkar and Prathamesh Joshi, Carsense is an IoT device that connects a user’s car or bike to their smartphone. The device then send alerts to users if their car/bike is being towed or stolen. It also recognises if the car/bike suffers an accident and informs emergency contacts in such a scenario. The device also measures mileage and shares analytics and insights to improve it. Using the device, car/bike owners can also share their road trips on social media platforms.

CarSense was one of the three startups selected by chipmaker Qualcomm for its Qualcomm Design in India Challenge in year 2016. Earlier in November 2015, the startup had also raised a seed round of funding from Kunal Shah and Sandeep Tandon, the founders of FreeCharge. In 2017, the startup launched its smar car device on online marketplace Amazon India.

Carsense posted a turnover of ₹1.2 crore in FY 2016-17.

The vehicle diagnostics market was estimated to be $13.91 Billion in 2016, and is projected to grow to $30.22 Billion by 2021, registering a CAGR of 16.79% from 2016 to 2021.

With Carsense, Mahindra is probably aims to capture the piece of vehicle diagnostic market in India as it is to be noted that in 2012 Mahindra introduced the BLUE SENSE app for the XUV50, an SUV it manufactures. This app could sync with the vehicle's infotainment system via Bluetooth and users were not only able to control the music / radio channels but also view vehicle information on their smartphone such as climate control, distance to empty, tyre pressure, vehicle service reminder, door-open warning etc. However, it was limited to android phones only. Tesla To Launch Luxury Electric Car In India

tesla

Tesla Motors, an American automotive and energy storage company that designs, manufactures, and sells luxury electric cars is all set to set its foot in Indian market.

Tesla has unveiled $35,000 Model 3 car, one of its most affordable, on Friday morning at the company's design studio in Hawthorne, California. Tesla's founder & CEO Elon Musk tweeted that his company has identified India as a market for Tesla Model 3 Car.

The Model 3 cars will go into production in late 2017. Tesla is accepting a token of USD 1,000 for pre-orders for the Model 3 and had received over 115,000 orders for the car before its launch. Musk on stage claimed that the Model 3 will have a range of 215 miles (approx 350 kilometers) on a single charge and the company would work to improve that by the time the car hits the road.

The company said once the production starts, deliveries will begin in North America.

When the production is ramped up, deliveries in Europe, Asia-Pacific region and right-hand drive markets will happen.

Last year, on September 27, PM Modi visited Tesla Motors facility in Silicon Valley, US.

The Model 3, if imported into India as a complete built unit (CBU), will attract 125% customs duty and would be priced around Rs 50 lakh, equivalent to the basic version cost of Mercedes-Benz E class saloon.

Notably, this isn't the first rendezvous of Tesla with India. Last year, Musk had tweeted that setting up a Gigafactory in India would make sense in the long term given the country's renewable energy needs.

Startup From Chennai Develops Tiny Smart-Car Device

We have everything;from Smartphone to Smart TV to smart watch and just when you thought nothing can be made much smarter, a new smart device comes in the market to prove us wrong.

This time it’s a smart car, a car which notifies you when your car will run completely out of fuel, a car which will be able to detect the nearest fuel station, a car which will make driving a smooth experience for you.
Created by a Chennai based startup called Fuel Book Technology, this tiny device has the capability to turn any car into a smart car. Deepak John J came up with the idea for Fuel Book through his own experience. Once while driving, his car ran completely dry and he was stranded in the middle of nowhere. That's when the idea of a smart car struck Deepak's mind. Accompanied by an app, the device is self-installable and has the potential to create a smart vehicle right through any car's diagnostic port.

The startup has currently developed a working prototype of Fuelbook and close to entering production stage and for same they have crowdfunding this Smart Car device on Indiegogo and til now managed to get in just 9days an amount of $854USD out of $50,000 USD pledged.

The device is very easy to use. Once you have plugged it in your car, you’re required to download the application and launch it. The next step involves syncing the device over Bluetooth and Voila; you’ve now successfully turned your dumb car into a smart one.

The Fuel Book will not only tell the driver when his/her car will completely run out of fuel but also detect the nearest fuel station and ATM to help them. Along with this, the device also comes with a feature that will allow the user to unlock their car door right from their phones and save time.

Traffic is the biggest dread of a driver and this tiny device makes sure that its users don’t have to face this dread anymore. Using the device, the users will be able to transform their horns into a smart sensing apparatus that will send a message to the driver in the front and know the reason for the hold-up. If you’re one of those drivers who hate surprise bumps or breakers in their way, then don’t you worry because you won’t be getting any such surprises in future. The Fuel Book comes with a special social territory mapping feature that will alert the driver ten seconds prior to a bump in their way.

The device has a built-in accelerometer which takes care of the car’s speed. In the time of emergency, the device will share the driver’s GPS coordinates with his/her registered emergency contact through SMS or with the help of another Fuel Book using the “tag mode” feature.

The device has another super feature called the Al Engine that will collect and send the driver’s behavior data. Based on the user’s travelling history, the device will be able to detect when or where will he/she take a turn or when he/she will hit a break or accelerate. This feature will send a smart notification if there’s any trouble ahead in the way.

The tiny wonder device has an Atmel Smart Cortex-M3 MCU, a temperature sensor, a magnetometer, three-axis accelerometer, and has both RF connectivity and Bluetooth for pairing. The Fuel Book is compatible with iOS, Windows and Android smartphones and even works with Android Wear and Pebble smart watches. It is expected to hit the market November this year.

CarIQ, a Pune based startup has also developed an IoT device somewhat similar to Fuel Book.
