Musk Hands Over Made-in-China Teslas to Early Buyers in Shanghai

Tesla CEO Elon Musk presented the first batch of made-in-China cars to ordinary buyers on Tuesday in a milestone for the company's new Shanghai "giga-factory", but which comes as sales decelerate in the world's largest electric-vehicle market.

The eccentric entrepreneur danced awkwardly, gave out high-fives, and mugged on a stage as sleek Model 3 sedans -- the company's mid-price, mass-market offer -- were driven up one by one and presented to buyers who jumped into the back seats before being driven away at the plant.

The factory is the company's first outside the United States and a key step forward in Musk's strategy of going global. Musk said it was just the start of what will be a growing investment in China by the California-based electric-vehicle pioneer.

"We intend to continue making a significant investment and increasing that investment in China, making the Model 3 and the Model Y, and future models also in China," he said.

Musk, 48, said Tesla also planned to establish "a China design and engineering centre to actually design an original car in China for worldwide consumption."

Tesla has said the multi-billion-dollar plant is producing more than 1,000 vehicles per week. It has already delivered a small batch of Model 3s on December 30 to employees who had pre-ordered them. Those being driven away at Tuesday's event were the first for regular consumers.

The giga-factory is unusual for China, which typically requires foreign automakers to forge manufacturing joint ventures with domestic firms, which means sharing profits and technology with local partners. But amid sustained US pressure on China to open its markets, that requirement was waived for the Shanghai assembly line, which is wholly-owned by Tesla and believed to be the first to enjoy that status.

Musk has said that the plant would eventually have an annual production capacity of 500,000 vehicles, and has billed it as the solution to the company's perennial struggles with production delays and failure to keep up with demand.

Tesla's output woes in the US are easing however, with the company reporting that 2019 deliveries surged 50 percent year-on-year to 367,500. But China's auto market has slowed significantly since plans for the Shanghai factory began to take shape more than 18 months ago. After surging to become the world's largest automotive market, sales fell last year for the first time since the 1990s amid a slowing economy, US trade tensions, and a Chinese credit crackdown that has crimped car-financing channels.

Sales of "new-energy vehicles" such as electric models have particularly suffered, plunging nearly 44 per cent in November, the fifth straight month of contraction, after the government slashed subsidies for such cars earlier last year.

A number of automotive analysts have said Tesla could struggle to measure up to Musk's promises for Shanghai output.

But at more than USD 450 per share, Tesla's stock is at record highs, having more than doubled since June on improving output and earnings.

Morgan Stanley said in late December that Tesla shares were positioned for a "potential surge" through the middle of 2020 due to the Shanghai factory coming on line and other potentially positive catalysts. (AFP)

Chetan Bhagat To Do Elon Musk; To Launch Electric Car Startup in India

Chetan Bhagat, who was adjudged the most successful writer of 2016 because of his latest novel, One Indian Girl, which outsold every other book published in the country in 2016, made a major announcement yesterday on Twitter.

The famous Indian writer took to the 140-characters social networking site and wrote:

Bhagat, who has written seven fiction and two non-fiction books till date, has decided to take sometime off from his writing career spanning over two decades and make use of his mechanical engineering degree he earned in 1995 from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.

The Indian writer, who is infamous for his antics on Twitter, has decided to turn gears from writing and focus his attention on setting up an electronic car project. In an interview to The Quint, Bhagat revealed that his inspiration behind starting an electric car project of his own was none other than Tesla founder Elon Musk.

According to Bhagat, "Tesla already has an electric car out there which is successful, and all auto manufacturers are working on it as well. I am inspired by Elon Musk, but anyone can think along these lines. Technology like this is quickly adopted."

While Bhagat might have taken inspiration from Musk, but he might not be knowing that Musk himself has recently given a hint that we could soon see his successful Tesla electric cars cruising down the Indian streets (Read Here). In fact, according to Musk, it could be as soon as this summer.

Talking about the need of electric cars in India, Bhagat said, since India doesn't produce its own fossil fuels, electric cars need to be really encouraged in the second-largest population on Earth as we can generate as much electricity as we want. According to him, switching to electric cars will make us self-sufficient and not dependent on others for fossil fuels.

Though the Indian subcontinent is expected to become the world’s third-largest auto market by 2020, the electric-car market in the country still remains small. Bhagat hopes to change that in the coming few years.

It will be interesting to see how Bhagat is successfully able to write his innings in his new endeavour.

Tesla To Launch Luxury Electric Car In India

tesla

Tesla Motors, an American automotive and energy storage company that designs, manufactures, and sells luxury electric cars is all set to set its foot in Indian market.

Tesla has unveiled $35,000 Model 3 car, one of its most affordable, on Friday morning at the company's design studio in Hawthorne, California. Tesla's founder & CEO Elon Musk tweeted that his company has identified India as a market for Tesla Model 3 Car.

The Model 3 cars will go into production in late 2017. Tesla is accepting a token of USD 1,000 for pre-orders for the Model 3 and had received over 115,000 orders for the car before its launch. Musk on stage claimed that the Model 3 will have a range of 215 miles (approx 350 kilometers) on a single charge and the company would work to improve that by the time the car hits the road.

The company said once the production starts, deliveries will begin in North America.

When the production is ramped up, deliveries in Europe, Asia-Pacific region and right-hand drive markets will happen.

Last year, on September 27, PM Modi visited Tesla Motors facility in Silicon Valley, US.

The Model 3, if imported into India as a complete built unit (CBU), will attract 125% customs duty and would be priced around Rs 50 lakh, equivalent to the basic version cost of Mercedes-Benz E class saloon.

Notably, this isn't the first rendezvous of Tesla with India. Last year, Musk had tweeted that setting up a Gigafactory in India would make sense in the long term given the country's renewable energy needs.
