Philips Ships 2-Millionth AED, Helping to Save Lives Across the Globe

Royal Philips, a global leader in health technology, has announced the shipment of its two-millionth AED (Automated External Defibrillator). This achievement marks a major milestone in Philips’ continued efforts to combat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), reaffirming the company’s commitment to providing empowered heart care across the health continuum. Cardiac arrests can happen anywhere, at any time, and bystander intervention and treatment with an AED has been shown to increase the survival rate by three times.

In its 1st Global Startup Collaboration, Philips Selects 19 Startups from China, India, Netherlands and US

Netherlands-based global technology company, Philips, has selected 19 startups for its first global start-up collaboration program involving Philips’ innovation hubs in Cambridge (US), Eindhoven (the Netherlands), Bangalore (India) and Shanghai (China) focused on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, announced the company in a press release.

The incubation programme focuses on the application of AI-based clinical decision support tools, such as image interpretation, analysis and integration, and workflow tools, such as intelligent treatment plans for radiology, ultrasound and oncology. After careful analysis, the most promising 19 early stage start-ups out of 750 applicants were selected for inclusion in Philips’ proven incubator program for start-up companies.

The program will be carried out at Philips’ innovation hubs in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Eindhoven, the Netherlands; Bangalore, India; and Shanghai, China. For India Innovation hub of India Refer Here.

During the 12-week incubator program, Philips will provide the selected 19 startups with health technology expertise and access to its partners, including hospitals, universities and financial organizations. Philips HealthWorks startup program accelerates breakthrough innovation through internal venturing and external start-up engagement. This program enables the company to assess, foster and monitor promising early stage start-up companies for potential future collaborations, as well as providing Philips with an in-depth view of the most recent developments in health technology from around the globe.

In addition to HealthWorks, Philips has a separate team managing venture capital investing, Health Technology Ventures. HealthWorks and Health Technology Ventures collaborate to form a center of excellence for start-up companies looking to partner with Philips.

Last year in May, Philips, together with American Heart Association and UPMC, had launched Cardeation Capital, a $30 million collaborative venture capital fund designed to spur healthcare innovation in heart disease and stroke care. Managed by Aphelion Capital, each of the three organizations has committed $10 million to the fund to bring products and solutions to market that address critical areas of healthcare delivery and health management.

In 2016, it was reported that Philips is planning to set up an India-focused venture fund to make investment in Indian healthcare technology startups. However since then nothing has been heard.

Philips already have venture funds in Israel & Netherlands and now looking at setting up a similar fund for Indian startups as well. Dutch consumer electronics and healthcare firm Philips is planning to set up an India-focused venture fund to make investment in Indian healthcare technology startups. Philips already have venture funds in Israel & Netherlands and now looking at setting up a similar fund for Indian startups as well.

In July 2015, Philips and Israel-based pharma company Teva jointly set up a $30-million venture fund to invest in medical devices and healthcare technology startups in Israel over eight years. Philips veteran Jeroen Tas said that Bengaluru is an important hub for the company.

"We have a couple of hubs that are really important to us — clearly Bangalore is one, Eindhoven is one. We have a smaller hub in the US and Israel. And each of these are in places where we have an ecosystem," said Tas.

Along with fund launch, Philips is also looking to significantly ramp up its data-analytics team and hire hundreds of data scientists over the next 5 years. The company, currently, has about 200 data scientists working out of its Bengaluru technology centre.

"We will potentially have 2,000 people in Bangalore as part of the data science team — up from 200 now. The kind of talent we are looking for is people with a science background.

The best people who are really good at this have a statistical background. We're also looking at people who have done business analytics — also people who have majored in physics, chemistry, etc. That kind of background," said Tas.

A couple of days back, US based venture capital firm EVC also announced its plans to launch $50 million fund focused on Indian startups. The fund will typically invest around $100,000-$5 million in startups.

Tech Mahindra, GE, Cisco & Others Unites To Form India IoT Panel

Industry veterans from Vodafone, Tesco, Tech Mahindra, Philips, GE and Cisco have joined hands to form an Internet of Things panel in India. The panel will try to build open source Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to solve issues and problems in specific areas such as agriculture, healthcare and education.

The panel will be led by an industry body called Institution of Engineering Technology and Dr. Rishi Bhatnagar, global head for digital enterprise services at Tech Mahindra will be the panel’s chairman.

Other members of the panel include Joy Ranjan Cheruvanthoor, senior Vice-President-strategic alliances and M2M at Vodafone Business Services; Babu Narayan, senior principal scientist at GE Software Research; and Cisco Systems’ principal engineer Mukesh Taneja. Robin Saxby, who is the founder of ARM holdings, has been chosen to be one of the global advisors to the panel.

Internet of Things involves connecting everything from wearable devices and traffic signals to waste control systems and door locks to a huge network.

“The panel will have six working groups on Internet of Things applications which will concentrate on IoT approaches that are being applied across market segments and various businesses. Besides these, the core panel will have a special working group around Internet of Things Labs and on regulatory and legal points," said Bhatnagar in a statement to Economic Times.

The Internet of Things panel will also work on creating a startup accelerator that would combine various components of IoT into useful products.

According to Shekhar Sanyal, country head at Institution of Engineering Technology, India, “There is a large startup ecosystem in Internet of Things space in India. We will provide technical and business mentorship to such startups and also help connect them with investors."  Snayal gave this statement to ET.

The government of India wants the country’s IoT industry to touch the magic figure of $15 billion (Rs. 94,500 crore) by the year 2020. The government is currently working on its 1st IoT policy. Companies expect a significant amount of business from Internet of Things related work and local based software developers such as Tech Mahindra, Infosys and Wipro have already started working on making its way into the market.

The panel will also try to collaborate with other industry bodies which are working on the same issues and problems as them.

The company will re-enter the fastest growing Smartphone market in the world by launching a series of feature and Smartphones. The phones are expected to be unveiled on 28th May by Sang Fei Consumer Communications Co. in New Delhi.

Sang Fei which is a joint venture between Shenzhen SED Industry Co. and Philips electronics has developed this new range of phones which will be sold all over the world. SS Bassi currently Sang Fei’s head of SAARC operations and who has earlier worked with Reliance communications and Lenovo has been bestowed upon the duty to look after the Indian Business.

 

Philips mobile phone business all over the globe was taken over by China Electronics Corporation which is the parent company of Sang Fei in 2007. Philips initially used to sell mobile phones in India but it stopped do so after the acquisition. The price range in which the phones will be offered hasn’t been revealed by the company yet. The company should surely take some lessons from Motorola which was successfully able to re-launch itself in the Indian market by creating phones heavy on features and low on prices.

The company’s re-entry into the Indian business won’t be a cake walk. As it will not only have to face stiff competition from the likes of Nokia, Samsung, Apple and Sony etc. but it will also have to face the heat from in-house manufactures like Motorola, Micromax and Karbonn. Further, Apple’s former CEO John Sculley’s Obi brand of phones and China’s famous device manufacturer Xiaomi’s phones can also be expected to hit the markets any time soon. They can prove to be tough competitors for Philips.

The Smartphone market has tripled its share in 2013 when compared to 2012.  In 2013, about 44 millions devices were shipped which was three times more than 16.2 million devices shipped in 2012. The Smartphone market in India is expected to rise even further in 2014 with Smartphones expected to available at an entry price of Rs.2, 500. This price will make more and more people to make the switch from feature to Smartphones.
