HP setting up Centre in Andhra Pradesh to Skill Students on Using IoT in Agriculture

Tech major Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) on Friday said it has signed a pact with Agastya International Foundation to set up a Centre of Excellence in Andhra Pradesh for skilling students on using emerging technologies like Internet of Things (IoT) in agriculture.

The facility will be set up on the Foundation's campus at Gudipalli in Andhra Pradesh. It will provide students with access to advanced IT solutions that are at the leading edge of technology innovation in the agricultural sector to achieve higher food production from finite land resources, a statement said.

"Technology can play a vital role in addressing rapidly-evolving global needs related to food and agriculture. Being a purpose-driven organisation, we are leveraging previously untapped resources to reveal new solutions for such social and environmental challenges," HPE India Managing Director Som Satsangi said.

The Centre of Excellence will train the youth on technology to improve yield, productivity and sustainability across the entire agricultural ecosystem, he added.

Under the guidance of Internet of Things (IoT) experts from HPE, these students will get the opportunity to work with soil fertility experts on agriculture-related projects. The training, in the areas of IoT and computer programming, also aims to improve their employment prospects.

In September 2017, HPE, along with PwC, launched a new project that will work towards creating a CoE in the city of Kolkata that will work towards using the vast possibilities that Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has to offer and optimise things for the city administrators so that they can offer their best services to the citizens of their cities.

European Union to Help Create CoE for 'IoT for Smart Cities' at IIIT-Hyderabad

European Union, through its India-EU ICT Standardisation Cooperation Project, is supporting the creation of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Internet of Things (IoT) for Smart Cities at IIIT-Hyderabad.

As part of the CoE, the EU India project will not only help to design relevant courses on IoT, but will also facilitate capacity building by supporting research collaborations and exchange of experts between India and EU.

With an aim to build a deeper understanding of the standards driven approach for smart cities, and facilitate collaboration between various smart city stakeholders across India and EU, the project will also organise outreach activities such as hackathons, workshops and conferences. These activities would be organised on varied components of IoT including the use of standards such as oneM2M for interoperability for the benefit of public at large.

The CoE brings together faculty from several IIIT-H research centres such as signal processing and communications, embedded systems, data science, computer systems group and domain areas such as building science, spatial informatics, e-governance, and earthquake engineering, thereby facilitating co-operation between different experts on interdisciplinary aspects of IoT for Smart Cities.

The EU as part of the project facilitated an exploratory trip to Estonia of the IIIT-H faculty in January. With a view to strengthen and support developers’ community, CoE has conducted number of trainings including applications of LoRaWAN standard for smart-cities and use of oneM2M in IoT applications. In July, the CoE will undertake a visit to France for enhancing collaboration between Indian and French universities and start-ups working in Toulouse and Bordeaux.

Commenting on this initiative, the coordinator of this CoE Dr Sachin Chaudhari, Assistant Professor, Signal Processing and Communications Research Center, said, “Learnings from our research collaborations, courses and hackathons, conducted as part of this CoE’s activities, will be used to apply smart city solutions in Hyderabad and then the successful models will be replicated across India. Thus, this CoE at IIIT-H, supported by India-EU ICT Standardization Cooperation Project, is expected to trigger a smart city revolution in India in several ways.”

Elaborating on the importance of the CoE, Raimund Magis, Chargé d’Affairesa, said, “Add interoperability and open innovation to IoT and it becomes a game changer which can positively impact millions of lives. The Centre of Excellence at IIIT-H facilitates the latest in IoT, being developed across India and the EU based on global standards, to reach a wider audience. We hope that these deliberations and interactions will further fast track solutions for the Indian smart cities requirements."

Nasscom To Set Up IoT CoE in Hyderabad

The Hyderabad IT sector is going through one of its best phase in the recent times. After the city got selected by National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) for a centre of excellence (CoE) on big data and analytics, the body is now gearing up to set up another CoE for internet of things (IoT) in the city.

Established in 1988, Nasscom is a trade association of Indian Information Technology and Business Process Outsourcing industry. Prior to Hyderabad, the association had already set up one of the IoT CoEs in Bengaluru (Read Here).

Nasscom sector skill council chairman B V R Mohan Reddy strongly believes that IoT can prove to be one of the game changing technologies that can have tremendous impact in many verticals such as e-governance, healthcare, and retail, among others.

The organisation is currently awaiting an approval from the central government to start working on Hyderabad's IoT CoE.

According to Sanjeev Malhotra, CEO, IoT Centre of Excellence,"Once approval is granted, we will request for space from the state government. This will be set up in a public private partnership (PPP) model, wherein half of the funding will come from the central government and half from industry."

As and when the approval is granted, Nasscom will require around 10,000-15000 sqft space for setting up the centre, of which around 3,000 sqft will be a dedicated lab space.

It was almost a year ago in July that Nasscom had launched its first IoT CoE at Bengaluru, in association with the Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY) and Education and Research Network (ERNET). Nasscom believes that there can be a vast scope of engagement with startups in the area of IoT, and is hence looking to set up four more IoT COEs throughout the country. These COEs are most likely to be set up Hyderabad, Gurgaon, Ahmedabad and Andhra Pradesh.

Malhotra further clarified that these IoT centres will be working towards the usage of IoT in different verticals. While all of the four centre would have some common layers like there will be labs in all four, where startups would be able to come and work. But at the same time, each of the centres will have a separate focus area like agri, healthcare etc. For example, Nasscom IoT CoE is most likely to be focussed on agri tech.

According to Malhotra, their aim with the IoT CoEs is not become another T-Hub. They are just going to deal with startups who have deep technology. He added that their goal is to promote IoT as a technology and help entrepreneurs take this technology to the end users, which in this case are the manufacturers.

So, if IT is where your heart lies, now is the right time to shift base to Hyderabad, we think.
