IESA signed MOU with UPLC, Department of IT and Electronics Government of Uttar Pradesh

India Electronic and Semiconductor Association signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with the state of Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh to support the semiconductor ecosystem in India on the sidelines of Semicon India, 2023. The MoU signed with GSEM, Gujarat will be a harbinger of growth with respect to semiconductor manufacturing, packaging and design of the electronics manufacturing and design aspects with a special emphasis on Skilling and creation of fabless entities. The MoU signed with UPLC, Government of Uttar Pradesh will curate semiconductor and fabless policies for the state by a multi stakeholder engagement and focus on establishing hardware centres of excellence besides steering of skilling initiatives. IESA remains committed to development of Semiconductor and ESDM ecosystem in India and is proud to be associated with both these sunrise states to steer and enable all policy and technology initiatives in this space with the overall aim of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

IESA being a Nodal Industry Body in the semiconductor industry helped students and startups to learn about the industry through its FutureSkills program, a transformative initiative aimed at empowering students and fostering a self-reliant future for the Electronics and Semiconductor sectors in India.

The three day event emphasized upon various aspects of developing the semiconductor ecosystem in India. Supporting the vision of Hon’ble PM of India of Atmanirbhar Bharat the event was catalyzing the emerging technologies, infrastructure, policies and industry support. Major companies like AMD, Micron, Cadence, and Foxconn announced significant investments in India. Sessions covered compound semiconductors, display manufacturing, and attracting investments. Themes included sustainability, talent development, and collaboration with global partners. India's potential as a semiconductor hub was emphasized, stressing the need for a comprehensive policy framework and strong industry-government collaboration to foster growth in the semiconductor industry

IESA also steered a panel discussion, titled “Readiness Assessment: Is India ready to become a semiconductor manufacturing hub?”, brought together key decision-makers and representatives from various state governments and industry experts. The discussion aimed to explore the potential and challenges of establishing India as a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing. Attendees got an opportunity to gain valuable insights from the esteemed panelists who play instrumental roles in shaping the country's semiconductor policy and infrastructure.

India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) is delighted to announce the highly anticipated annual event, Spacetronics and Deftronics 2023.

The event is scheduled on May 25th and 26th, 2023, at Hilton Bengaluru Embassy Manyata Business Park (Convention Centre). The conference and exhibition will bring together over 500 participants from the public and private sector showcasing cutting-edge technologies and promoting collaboration to drive the growth of the strategic electronics in space and defence sector.

Spanning over two days, the annual flagship event aims to foster development and integration of new technologies that will contribute to the progress of India's defense and space industries. The event apart from featuring an array of keynotes and Panel discussions by the 'Who is Who of Indian Space & Defense industry' will also have a Start-up Pavilion, fostering collaborative and interactive discussions among entrepreneurs, investors, and other key stakeholders.

The programme was attended by senior industry leaders, Sh Ashok Chandak, known Semiconductor veteran, Mr Sanjay Gupta, Chairman IESA, K Krishna Moorthy, President and CEO IESA and key senior functionaries from IESA Secretariat.

This chapter aims to galvanise notable entities in automotive, critical electronics, defence and aerospace segments and align them to semiconductor design, distribution and manufacturing. Pune is a notable industry hub of the country with a large footprint and academic interface of engineering colleges and research centres. It will be IESA’s endeavour to interconnect, interact and integrate all these entities towards a singular goal of Skilling, Design and further manufacturing of semiconductors.

IESA, APEITA and IIT Tirupati Conducts the 1st Edition of Defence Electronics and Semiconductor Innovations (DESI) Conclave 2023

India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA), India's leading industry association for ESDM (Electronics System Design and Manufacturing) sector, today, in conjunction with Government of Andhra Pradesh organized the Defence Electronics and Semiconductor Innovations (DESI) Conclave 2023.

This one-day event is being held in association with Andhra Pradesh Electronics and IT Agency (APEITA) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) at the IIT Tirupathi campus.

The conclave is aimed at holding discussions with respect to the current metrics of semiconductor application with respect to defence research, and forge the way ahead for ESDM innovations in this segment. The conclave witnessed active participation from several speakers on myriad topics to include ‘Evolution of semiconductor design eco system in India’, ‘Opportunities in enabling secure ecosystem around semiconductor fabs’, ‘Successful Startup's - a mobility example’, ‘Innovation Ecosystem’, ‘Andhra Pradesh ESDM Landscape’, and ‘Emerging and future technologies of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)’.

A session on ‘Defence & Aerospace: Growing Impactful MSME's to support Defence Electronics Industry in India- How & Why?’ was also conducted during the conclave. The conclave also provided ESDM startups with a chance to showcase their products and innovations, along with discussions around the direction in which the Indian ESDM industry is headed.

India Talent to Engage in Cutting-edge AI R&D

IESA member company, d-Matrix announced at the IESA Vision Summit, the opening of its R&D center in the presence of IESA chairman Vivek Tyagi. Founded by semiconductor veterans from Silicon Valley, Sid Sheth, and Sudeep Bhoja, d-Matrix is building a one-of-a-kind datacentre, AI inferencing platform using a software-first approach coupled with path-breaking hardware innovations in the areas of in-memory computing (IMC) and chiplet level scale-out interconnects. d-Matrix has tackled the physics of memory-compute integration using innovative ML tools, software and algorithms, and circuit techniques, solving the final frontier in AI compute efficiency.

In a bid to strengthen the electronics and semiconductors entrepreneurial ecosystem, the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) is making provisions for launching the first chapter of the Electronics and Semiconductors Startup Summit. The event is happening in hybrid mode on August 25 at The Lalit Ashok,Bengaluru . Through this day-long event, IESA aims to bring innovators, successful entrepreneurs, investors and government agencies on a single platform to promote and strengthen the electronics and semiconductors startup world.

Ruchir Dixit, VP & Country Manager Siemens EDA and IESA EC member, said, "A latest McKinsey report suggested that the global semiconductor industry is expected to become a trillion-dollar sector by 2030. India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) supports United Nations Industrial Development Organization’s (UNIDO) FLCTD Innovation Challenge 2022

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) regional office in New Delhi has announced the launch of 5th Innovation Challenge on Innovative Low Carbon Technologies. Applications will be accepted until 31st May 2022. The Innovation Challenge is conducted under the Facility for Low Carbon Technology Deployment (FLCTD; https://www.low-carbon-innovation.org/), which is jointly implemented by UNIDO and Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

The Innovation Challenge covers thematic area of “Electrical Energy Storage Systems” in which applications are invited for innovative solutions on electrochemical batteries, supercapacitors, hybrid energy storage systems including super/ultra-capacitor & electrochemical battery systems and critical components for electrical energy storage systems including power conversion system.

Customized Energy Solutions (CES) India, powered with India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) is the implementing partner to support the project management unit in planning and implementation of the innovation challenge.

The project provides financial assistance of up to US$50,000 to the winners to validate their innovation and demonstrate its efficacy (performance) in actual field conditions – a necessary step before commercialization. It also supports innovative technologies in advance stage of development for field demonstration and validation and does not support innovation that are at the ideation-stage, proof-of-concept or at lab-scale.

Commenting on the Innovation Challenge 2022, Sandeep Tandon, National Programme Manager, Facility for Low Carbon Technology Deployment (FLCTD) said, “UNIDO’s Innovation Challenge provides unique opportunity and risk-capital of up to INR 3.5 million to validate the efficacy and performance of innovative technologies for scale-up and commercialization. Already from a pool of 59 winning innovations that are being supported with INR 180 million, 17 have completed technology trials and 13 have been commercialized. The challenge is open to entrepreneurs, start up and registered private entities. FLCTD is helping industrial and commercial sector players to choose proven innovative low carbon technologies for decarbonization.

Debi Prasad Dash, Executive Director, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) said, “India’s energy storage sector is seeing many positive developments like the PLI and battery swapping announcement, and the energy storage policy is also expected from the Ministry of Power. With these developments, we will see many startups and large companies diversify their business into energy storage space and this will help many indigenous innovations in India that will support the ecosystem. This all will catalyze the growth of startups in India. With the national labs and research institutes, we expect new innovations to come in India like other emerging countries.”

The selection process includes post application screening, pitching to an expert panel, in-person visits, and technical and financial due-diligence. The project orientation of FLCTD is more technology-focused as compared to the standard fundraising opportunities available for innovators, so the shortlisted applicants are also provided mentoring through each round of the selection process to help them in improving their chances of final selection.

New Delhi, 09 November 2020: The increasing graph of the global energy ecosystem in India is estimated to cement India on the roadmap of becoming the largest market for advanced energy storage technologies within the next 5 years. With a view to further propagate this vision and to bring industry leaders on a single platform to discuss the growth prospects and roadblocks for the sector, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) India's leading alliance on energy storage & e-mobility organized its flagship virtual conference and exhibition - India Energy Storage Week (IESW) from 3rd - 6th November along with Pre – Conference Workshops on November 02, 2020. 


India is on the right path towards adopting energy storage backed by the exponential growth of the Behind the meter and Grid-scale storage market, being deployed globally to support renewable energy integration.  The energy storage market in India is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 6.1% by 2026 with the global energy storage investment projected upto $100 billion in the next five years. The Industry is witnessing a significant rise in the number of companies supplying energy storage systems and big companies formulating R&D initiatives for energy storage. State Governments like Delhi and Telangana have recently announced the policy to create a conducive ecosystem for EV adoption in the respective states. Investments have been upraised in the sector with more than 50 companies receiving funding from Indian conglomerates for service-side  innovation, BMS, Thermal management, etc. Through India Energy Storage Week, IESA envisioned paving ways towards accelerating India's E-mobility journey, the market size and potential, the unending opportunities in the sector and the global impact on the sustainability of energy resources.


The five-day flagship event featured thought-igniting sessions on Make in India, Global EV manufacturing ecosystem, Regulatory and Policy on electric mobility, R&D, Skill Development, Capacity building, and many more. Two parallel energy storage workshop tracks allowed delegates to learn from hands-on experience of industry leaders and will provide in-depth understanding of advanced technologies and solutions.

During India Energy Storage Week (IESW), IESA launched MIGHT (Mobility and Infrastructure with Green Hydrogen Technology) Initiative to focus work on hydrogen production, storage and applications including stationary power generation, transportation and other usage in India. As part of this initiative, IESA organised two dedicated sessions on hydrogen and fuel-cell and also partnered with Innovation Norway and Business Finland for India – Nordic Collaboration for Hydrogen Economy.

 

Furthermore, IESA organised a dedicated session on "Women in Energy Storage & EV'' on 2nd November in order to promote the women participation in these emerging areas. IESA also launched an informal women's group "IESA-WEN (ESA- Women in Energy Network)" where women can take advantage of various IESA activities throughout the year and invites women leaders to join the group. IESA will also work with 100+ members to increase participation of women in this emerging sector.

  

At the global event, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in association with IESA and Customized Energy Solutions (CES) also announced the launch of UNIDO FLCTD – Energy Storage Innovation challenge. Startups and leading companies are invited to apply for the innovation challenge before 18th December to get a grant of upto USD 50,000 for demonstration projects and beta deployments in energy storage & e-mobility space in India.

Shri Anil Srivastava, Principal Consultant & Mission Director, NITI Aayog said, "It is great to see the industry being upbeat about the e-mobility sector. Shri Sanjeev Chawla, Director, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) said, "We aim to prepare the youth ready for the newly emerging sector in the country. From 1st July 2020, the definition of MSME has broadened. A lot many companies will be covered under this new spectrum. MSME Funds of Fund is a new kind of funding for equity infusion under MSME. Credit Guarantee of Loan for MSME covering guarantee up to Rs. 2 crores with limited collateral. Intervention Loan is also one of the new initiatives. The Credit-linked Subsidy Scheme is also one of the helpful schemes for MSME development. The Champion Desk is set up to guide the entrepreneur to solve their issues in setting up new businesses. During COVID-19, the Emergency Credit Line was set to solve the liquidity issue for the MSME entrepreneurs."


Shri Jayesh Ranjan IAS, Principal Secretary to Government of Telangana, Industries & Commerce

(I&C) Department, & (ITE&C Department) said, "The willingness of the masses to adopt e-mobility made a case for implementing effective charging infrastructure in the state. We were fortunate to have

Fortum to come forward and help us set charging infrastructure along with IOCL and Powergrid Corporation. The electric storage system is integral for the success of e-mobility. One area which we looked into is the standardization of equipment which is required. Our target is to ensure 100 charging stations to be established in the state. I do believe, greater adoption of e-vehicles will address some of the burning issues around the sector. We are looking to create a conducive environment for making the state a hub for innovation and development."


Dr R Harikumar, Director in Charge, Energy Management Centre- Kerala, The first State Government in India to establish an Energy Management Centre (EMC) at State level said, " While working on energy efficiency, we found the net energy consumption has increased. We call it the rebound effect and it is a great challenge. Be it any sector, the growth of waste is also one of the key challenges that has been observed. In India, taxi aggregators are increasingly promoting the use of e-vehicles. ICT has come in a big way in the transport sector. Battery as a service must be promoted. ICE vehicles need to be replaced with battery-operated electric vehicles for reducing emissions to a greater extent. We need to branch out our training programs to more professionals other than budding engineering students and include non-technical students as well and make them industry-ready."


As part of the event, IESA hosted a global start-up outreach program hosted in association with UNIDO, supported by Invest India, Startup India, and TiE Global, with a view to propel India's drive to a greener future with electric vehicles. In the presence of 10+ jury board from the investment community, 12  start-ups in energy storage, e-mobility, clean energy, and clean transportation were  shortlisted from over 40 applicants. IESA will take forward the Start-up pitch to the next level with year long engagement with start-ups and support in investment and mentorship. The three winners of the programme were Minion Labs Private Limited (Energy Management), Navalt Solar & Electric Boats Pvt. Ltd (e-boats), and Jeevtronics (Energy) who were felicitated with a complementary IESA membership and mentorship from IESA Leadership Council. 


On 3rd November, IESA also felicitated the pioneers and stalwarts in energy storage, EV and microgrid industry with the fourth edition of IESA Industry Excellence Awards powered by Customized Energy Solutions, to recognize the best of companies, projects and leaders in Energy Storage, microgrids and Electric Vehicles industry. Indian conglomerate Larsen & Toubro was awarded the 'Microgrid project of the Year' Award while Husk Power bagged the 'Microgrid company of the year' Award. The 'EV Company of the Year - 2W' was awarded to Hero Electric, while Kinetic Green was adjudged as the winner of 'EV Company of the Year in 3-Wheeler segment'. The Award for 'EV Charging Infrastructure project of the Year' was bagged by Fortum; 'EV Charging Infrastructure Company of the Year' was Exicom Tele Systems. While the 'Emerging Company of the Year- EV Charging Infrastructure' Category went to Okaya Power, and Energy Efficiency Services Limited was announced the 'EV Charging Infrastructure Service Provider of the Year'. Epsilon Advanced Materials and Delta Electronics bagged the 'Technology Innovator of the Year award.' ESS Project of the Year was bagged by 'AES for their Grid Connected Utility Scale Storage Project in Delhi.' The "Electric Vehicle Emerging Company of the Year" bagged by Bounce (Wicked Ride Adventure Services). While Delhi bagged the "Energy Storage and EV Policy Leadership Award for States for their EV Policy". Emerging Leader of the Year was bagged by Mr Anant Nahata of Exicom Tele Systems and Policy Pioneer of the Year bagged by Mr. Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog. The Woman Leader of the Year are Dr Judy Jeevarajan, Research Director, Electrochemical Safety, Underwriters laboratories and Ms Sulajja Firodia Motwani, Founder and CEO of Kinetic Green Energy & Power Solutions. IESA Shortlists 12 Startups for its Global Startup Outreach Program in association with UNIDO, backed by Invest India, Startup India, and TiE Global




India has seen a proliferation of startups in the EV space in the past few years on the back of the government's vision for 2030. Clearly, the government and startups are going all out to up the electric mobility game to ensure a clean, green, and responsible India. In order to further propel India's drive to a greener future with electric vehicles, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) is organizing its global startup outreach program in association with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) for startups in the e-mobility, clean energy, energy storage and clean transportation sectors. Supported and backed by Invest India, Startup India, TiE Global, and other partners, the program is a part of IESA's 5-day long virtual conference and exhibition - India Energy Storage Week (IESW), focusing on Energy Storage, EV, and Microgrids from 2nd to 6th Nov.


With the eMobility sector largely dependent on large companies and conglomerates, the Indian market is on the path of consistent technological transition in adoption of electric mobility and energy storage. The sun – the largest source of natural energy – has held much importance through the ages and people have gathered throughout time to worship the sun during the days of solstice and equinox with special rituals. The Autumnal equinox occurs on 22nd September and the day and night are of approximately equal duration i.e. the day are balanced. Energy storage has played a huge role in grid balancing, power supply demand management and frequency regulation and to acknowledge the balancing effects of Energy Storage, 22nd September was chosen as an apt date for the World Energy Storage Day


About India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA)

The India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) was launched in 2012 to assess the market potential of Energy Storage Technologies in India, through an active dialogue and subsequent analysis among the various stakeholders to make the Indian industry and power sector aware of the tremendous need for Energy Storage in the very near future. IESA aims to make India a Global Hub for research and manufacturing of advanced energy storage technologies by 2020. During past 8 years IESA membership has grown from 5 to 100+ and covers verticals from Energy Storage Manufacturers, Research institutes & universities, Renewable Energy companies and Power electronics companies.
