Content looks great on the Triton 500 SE’s 16-inch display. Gamers will appreciate the industry-leading WQXGA (2560x1600) panel’s 240Hz[2] refresh rate and 3 ms[] response time, topped off with support from the frame-syncing power of NVIDIA® G-SYNC® technology. Content creators will appreciate 500 nits of brightness, 100 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut, and a productivity-boosting 16:10 aspect ratio—plus an SD 7.0 card reader for offloading content.

The laptop runs Windows 11 out of the box and also features a full range of USB 3.2 Gen2 ports, including two Thunderbolt™ 4 Type-C ports with support for DisplayPort and power delivery[], while an HDMI 2.1 port makes 4K@120 Hz possible by allowing users to plug into an external display. Topping everything off, an Intel® Killer™ E3100G 2.5G Ethernet Controller, Intel® Killer™ Wi-Fi 6E 1675 and Control Center 2.0 empower users with blazing fast connectivity.

This hardware muscle powers up to a 15.6-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) IPS[1] display with a 165 Hz refresh rate—and with a revamped, cleaner chassis, the outside of the laptop looks great, too. A thin light bar below the palm rest (configurable via PredatorSense) lets the device retain its gamer aesthetic in a slightly more subtle fashion.

A dual-fan layout that includes one 5th Gen AeroBlade 3D fan helps the keep the system running cool, further supported by liquid metal thermal grease and Acer’s CoolBoost™ technology. A single press of the built-in PredatorSense button offers users control over the fan speed via four preset operating modes, while a single press of the built-in Turbo key instantly maxes out these settings for improved gaming performance. Upping the cool factor, the laptop’s mini-LED[2] backlit keyboard features per-key[2] RGB.

Codingal trains schoolteachers in Scratch Programing Language under IIT-M’s ‘UpSkill’ Initiative

Chennai, March 17, 2021: Online coding platform Codingal today announced that it has collaborated with IIT Madras (IIT-M) to improve the quality of Computer Science education at school level. As part of IIT-M’s ‘Upskill’ program under its annual technical festival, Shaastra 2021, Codingal trained school teachers in Scratch Programing Language. The Codingal-IIT Madras collaboration aims to equip schoolteachers with new teaching methodologies and tools that can be used in the classroom to enhance their students’ Computer Science learning.

Codingal conducted a six-session course in Scratch Programming Language to train 100+ teachers from 78 schools. Once trained, these teachers will in turn be able to teach Scratch Programing to their students as part of their computer science education.

Scratch language skills will allow school-going students to make their own interactive games and animations, which would allow them to nurture and demonstrate their creativity via online games development.

IT education in School curriculum across India needs to be at par with global standards. Equipping more teachers with coding knowledge will go a long way in making India the software powerhouse. This is also in line with GOI education policy adding coding at school level.

Chetan Reddy, Co-ordinator, Upskill Shaastra, IIT Madras said, “Shaastra 2021’s Upskill initiative is borne out of the necessity of transforming the Computer Science education at school level in India. We believe that Codingal’s expertise in imparting coding education is well-suited for training schoolteachers in Scratch programming and we are therefore glad to collaborate with them to run this training program. Initiative like Shaastra Upskill equips teachers with new teaching methodologies, which in turn helps students understand coding at an early age.”

Vivek Prakash, cofounder of Codingal said, “From day one, our mission at Codingal has been to inspire school children to fall in love with coding. Learning to program in Scratch is ideal for school-going children as it allows them to build simple games and animations that give full expression to their creativity. We are therefore thrilled to support IIT-M’s Upskill initiative with a specially designed course on Scratch programming for school teachers, so they can in turn get their students to learn coding in a fun and enjoyable manner.”

Codingal has developed the world's first coding curriculum with BIDE Model (Broad, inspiring, Deep, Efficient), integrated with Bloom's Taxonomy and a dedicated focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Maths) learning methodology. School kids love the Codingal platform for its teachers, curriculum, and competitions.

India's Total Network of Supercomputers' Performance is Less than Swiss' Single Supercomputer PIZ DAINT

Swiss Supercomputer 'Piz Daint'

Under National Super Computing Mission (NSM), India is fast expanding its supercomputer facilities and developing the capacity to manufacture its own supercomputers in the country.

Infrastructure planned in NSM Phase-I has already been installed and much of Phase-II is already in place, said a release by Ministry of Science & Technology. The ministry said -

the network of supercomputers through the country will soon reach to around 16 Petaflops (PF). Phase-III, to be initiated in January 2021, will take the computing speed to around 45 Petaflops.

Soon the work on Phase-III will start in 2021 and will include three systems of 3 PF each and one system of 20 PF as a national facility.

Besides, with recent announcement of a 100 Artificial Intelligence (AI) PetaFlops supercomputing system, PARAM Siddhi – AI, which is being created and installed in C-DAC by NVIDIA, India is fast expanding its supercomputer facilities and developing the capacity to manufacture its own supercomputers in the country. Yet, comparing to other developed countries India has to still come a long way.

For an instance -- currently the total network of supercomputers across India, which is yet to reach 16 Petaflops (PF), is less than of Piz Daint, a supercomputer in the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, which has performance power of 27.1 Petaflops (PF) [theoretical peak performance] and ranked 10th in TOP500 ranking of supercomputers until June 2020.

Pratyush and Mihir, the two supercomputers of India, ranked in at 67th and 120th spot on the list of TOP500.

The most powerful Supercomputer across the globe is Japan's Fugaku, which has a High Performance Linpack (HPL) result of 415.5 Petaflops (PF). Number.2 on the list is Summit, an IBM-built supercomputer that delivers 148.8 Petaflops on HPL.

India's NSM mission was targeting to establish a network of supercomputers ranging from a few teraFlops (TF) to Hundreds of teraFlops (TF) and three systems with greater than or equal to 3 petaFlops (PF) in academic and research institutions of National importance across the country by 2022. It is to be noted that One petaFLOPS is equal 1,000 teraFLOPS.

India's Indigenous Supercomputing Work under NSM

So FarUnder the NSM, more than 2400 supercomputing manpower and faculties have been trained, till date.

The first supercomputer assembled indigenously -- 'Param Shivay' -- was installed in IIT (BHU), followed by Param Shakti and Param Brahma at IIT-Kharagpur and IISER, Pune, respectively.

India has developed an Indigenous server (Rudra), which can meet the High-Performance Computing (HPC) requirements of all governments and PSUs. This is the first time that a server system was made in India, along with the full software stack developed by C-DAC.

In addition to these, this system can handle incredibly large-scale AI workloads increasing the speed of computing-related to AI several times.

Microsoft Built One of the World's Top-5 Supercomputers to Train Enormous AI Models

Recently, Microsoft has announced that it has built one of the top five publicly disclosed supercomputers in the world, making new infrastructure available in Azure to train extremely large artificial intelligence (AI) models, the company announced.

The supercomputer developed is a single system with more than 285,000 CPU cores, 10,000 GPUs and 400 gigabits per second of network connectivity for each GPU server.

The supercomputer is built by Microsoft in partnership with and exclusively for OpenAI, a San Francisco-based non-profit research organization that aims to make human-friendly AI. OpenAI counts Elon Musk as one of its founders. In July last year, Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI to jointly develop new super-computing technologies on Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform.

Compared with other supercomputers listed on the TOP500 supercomputers in the world, it ranks in the top five, said Microsoft. Hosted in Azure, the supercomputer also benefits from all the capabilities of a robust modern cloud infrastructure, including rapid deployment, sustainable datacenters and access to Azure services.

It is Microsoft's first step toward making the next generation of very large AI models and the infrastructure needed to train them available as a platform for other organizations and developers to build upon.

As part of its 'AI at Scale' initiative, Microsoft has built its own family of large AI models, which it calls the Microsoft Turing models, which it has used to improve many different language understanding tasks across Bing, Office, Dynamics and other productivity products. Earlier this year, the company also released to researchers the largest publicly available AI language model in the world, the Microsoft Turing model for natural language generation.

Microsoft is also exploring large-scale AI models that can learn in a generalized way across text, images and video. That could help with automatic captioning of images for accessibility in Office, for instance, or improve the ways people search Bing by understanding what’s inside images and videos.

The goal, Microsoft says, is to make its large AI models, training optimization tools and supercomputing resources available through Azure AI services and GitHub so developers, data scientists and business customers can easily leverage the power of AI at Scale.

"As we've learned more and more about what we need and the different limits of all the components that make up a supercomputer, we were really able to say, 'If we could design our dream system, what would it look like?'" said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. And then Microsoft was able to build it.

"We are seeing that larger-scale systems are an important component in training more powerful models," Altman added.

Microsoft has also unveiled a new version of DeepSpeed, an open-source deep learning training optimization library, and ZeRO (Zero Redundancy Optimizer), a novel memory optimization technology in the library, which vastly advances large model training by improving scale, speed, cost, and usability.

The update is significantly more efficient than the version released just three months ago and now allows people to train models more than 15 times larger and 10 times faster than they could without DeepSpeed on the same infrastructure.

IBM ties with Aussie Nanotech Startup for Quantum Chip Development

IBM has signed an agreement with Australian tech company Archer Materials to advance the widescale development of its quantum computing technology. Archer is now a member of the IBM Q Network, an initiative by IBM to build commercially available universal quantum computers for business and science.

With  this partnership, Archer and IBM will work together on the advancement of quantum computing.

Based in Adelaide, South Australia and Sydney, Archer uses a unique carbon-based material in its 12CQ qubit processor chip technology that has the potential to enable chip operation at room-temperature and integration with modern electronic devices.

A qubit processor is the most crucial hardware component of a quantum computer and consists of a core device (a chip) made from materials capable of processing quantum information necessary to solve complex calculations.

IBM teams based in New York will work directly with Archer staff who will gain access to IBM’s quantum computing expertise and resources to enable a broader hardware ecosystem using IBM’s open source software framework, Qiskit.

Last year in August, Klaus von Klitzing, a German physicist & Nobel prize winner, had said that Quantum Computers may not be in the market in at least 10 years but after within couple of months i.e. in October of same year, Google made an announcement that it achieved a breakthrough in quantum computing research, and claiming that an experimental quantum processor has completed a calculation in just a few minutes that would take a traditional supercomputer thousands of years. IBM then took a dig and backfires Google's claim.

Archer CEO Dr Mohammad Choucair said in a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange this morning Archer was the first Australian company building a quantum computing qubit processor to join the global IBM Q Network as an ecosystem partner.

[caption id="attachment_145040" align="aligncenter" width="850"] Archer CEO and co-inventor of the ¹²CQ chip technology Dr Mohammad Choucair (left) and Quantum Technology Manager Dr Martin Fuechsle.[/caption]

“Ultimately, we want Australian businesses and consumers to be one of the first beneficiaries of this exciting technology, and now that we are collaborating with IBM, it greatly increases our chances of success,” he said.

“The agreement with IBM is a realisation of the substantial progress Archer has made to date. We are now in a better position to potentially scale our competitive advantage globally. The quantum computing economy is rapidly growing, complex, and has the potential to impact all sectors dependent on computational power. First-movers are therefore in the best position to seize the lion’s share of the total value generated in this multibillion-dollar industry.”

The technical development at the heart of 12CQ is claimed by Archer to be a world-first.

[caption id="attachment_145041" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] First components of the 12CQ chip, which is smaller than the width of a human hair.[/caption]

Archer successfully began assembling chip prototypes in mid-2019 and is considerably advancing the commercial readiness of its 12CQ qubit processor chip technology towards a minimum viable product.

The intellectual property rights protecting the 12CQ qubit processor chip technology are held by Archer exclusively.

The development of quantum computers is envisioned to impact industries reliant on computational power, including finance, cryptocurrency and blockchain.

Dr Choucair invented the first material known to overcome the limitations of sub-zero (cryogenic) operating temperatures and electronic device integration for qubits. The conducting carbon material was able to process quantum information at room temperature and offered the potential for scalability.

Founded in Adelaide, the company began trading on the Australian Securities Exchange as Archer Exploration in 2007 and currently has a market capitalisation of almost $40 million. It changed its name to Archer Materials in November 2019 to better reflect the growing advanced materials development side of its business.

Its high-value mineral exploration targets are mainly in South Australia and include graphite, kaolin, copper and nickel.

India to Get 14 New Supercomputers under ₹ 4,500 Cr Supercomputing Mission

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), a department within the Ministry of Science and Technology in India, has issued a official statement, where it said that 14 new supercomputers will be deployed this year under Rs 4,500 crore-National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).

According to the DST statement, by the end of 2020 14 new super-computing systems would be installed at various national-level research laboratories and academic institutions.

The 1st indigenously assembled supercomputer, called Param Shivay, was installed in IIT-BHU and was inaugurated by the Prime Minister last year in February. Similar systems Param Shakti and Param Brahma were installed at IIT-Kharagpur in March last year. This is equipped with applications from domains like Weather and Climate, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Bioinformatics, and Material science.

Three more supercomputers are planned to be installed by April 2020, one each at IIT-Kanpur, JN Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bengaluru, and IIT-Hyderabad. This will ramp up the supercomputing facility to 6 PF.

Going forward, 11 new systems are likely to be set up in different IITs, NITs, National Labs, and IISERs across India by December this year, which will have many sub-systems manufactured and microprocessors designed in India which will bring in a cumulative capacity of 10.4 petaflops.

Steered jointly by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) and DST and implemented by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, the NSM mission was targeting to establish a network of supercomputers ranging from a few Tera Flops (TF) to Hundreds of Tera Flops (TF) and three systems with greater than or equal to 3 Peta Flops (PF) in academic and research institutions of National importance across the country by 2022.

This network of Supercomputers envisaging a total of 15-20 PF was approved in 2015 and was later revised to a total of 45 PF (45000 TFs), a jump of 6 times more compute power within the same cost and capable of solving large and complex computational problems.

To recall, in August 2018 India's first industrial Artificial Intelligence (AI) supercomputer was housed at CEERI's New Delhi campus. The system is a joint effort from Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CEERI) in Delhi and US-based chip-designer NVIDIA Corp.

Global PC shipments Grew 2.3% to 70.6 Million Units in Q4 2019: Gartner

The global PC market grew 2.3 per cent year-on-year in October-December 2019 with shipment totalling 70.6 million units, data from research firm Gartner showed.

The worldwide shipment was 69 million units in the fourth quarter of 2018, Gartner said its preliminary results for fourth quarter of 2019.

"The PC market experienced growth for the first time since 2011, driven by vibrant business demand for Windows 10 upgrades, particularly in the US, EMEA ( Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) and Japan," Gartner senior principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa said.

"We expect this growth to continue through this year even after Windows 7 support comes to an end this month, as many businesses in emerging regions such as China, Eurasia and the emerging Asia/Pacific have not yet upgraded," she added.

Contrasted against the ongoing weakness in consumer personal computers (PC) demand, business PC demand has led to unit growth in five of the last seven quarters, Kitagawa said.

"The ongoing Intel CPU shortage, which began mid-last year, became a major issue again on PC delivery to enterprise customers by the top three vendors. Without this shortage, shipments would have grown faster than the reported results," she said.

Worldwide PC shipments totalled 261.2 million units in 2019, a marginal 0.6 per cent increase from 2018.

This was the first time in seven years that the global PC market experienced growth.

Lenovo maintained its number one position in the worldwide PC market and widened its share over HP Inc. With the exception of the Asia/Pacific, Lenovo recorded year-over-year growth in all regions. In the US alone, Lenovo's desktop PC shipments rose more than 30 per cent compared to the year-ago period. PTI SID SID

Quantum Computers may Not be in the Market in at least 10 Yrs - Nobel Laureate Klaus Von Klitzing

The long sought-after Quantum Computers - a superfast technology touted as the next big revolution in computers - may not be in the market in at least 10 years, according to scientists, including German Nobel Laureate Klaus Von Klitzing.

Quantum computers leverage the characteristics of quantum mechanics to solve problems faster than regular computers. They have long been thought to spur the development of new breakthroughs in science, life-saving medications and, machine learning and diagnosing diseases faster.

Klitzing, 76, who was awarded the 1985 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the integer quantum Hall effect, said that quantum computers, when available, will not replace the traditional systems in use and would mostly be applied in research and industries.

"I don't see quantum computers launching in another 10 years, and even if they come I feel they won't be available for day-to-day calculations for common people," Klitzing told PTI during the 69th Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting here.

Elena Jordan from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the US agreed with Klitzing.

"Quantum computers that can outperform classical computers will not be available in the near future. This is because they are still in the development phase," said Jordan, a postdoctoral researcher affiliated to the University of Colorado Boulder.

"There are small quantum computers that can be seen as a proof of principle, but the majority of research groups are still trying to improve single gate operations like better fidelity and increased speed. They are far from offering a fully programmable quantum computer with a large number of qubits," she told PTI.

Jordan is hopeful that there will be useful quantum simulators that can only be used for a limited kind of tasks - that is to simulate a different quantum system which is hard to study otherwise.

"These simulators will be of interest for basic research," said Jordan. While a classical computer has a memory made up of bits, where each bit is represented by either a one or a zero, a quantum computer, on the other hand, maintains a sequence of qubits, which can represent a one, a zero, or any quantum superposition of those two qubit states.

"Complex phenomena in nature, which are otherwise difficult to realise in a laboratory or intractable on a classical computer, can be simulated in a quantum computer. A quantum computer will be the next home for innovative ideas and theories. Based on the new theories, new materials, drugs or devices can be manufactured. This may eventually help us in technical advancement and improving human health," noted Manoj K Joshi from the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information in Austria.

"Simple and small quantum computers already exist in laboratories but if you ask about a fully-fledged machine running on its own with its full power perhaps we will have to wait for that a bit," said Joshi, noting that some initiatives from the corporate sides, such as IBM Q, DWave and Google AI are already in place.

Klitzing, the director of the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Germany said that quantum computers may be helpful in limited fields while normal computers are a backbone of the society.

"I don't think if we will ever need a quantum computer inside a smartphone or for the purpose of solving general arithmetic problems. It will have applications in research as well on the technical/corporate side," Joshi, who is also associated with the University of Innsbruck in Austria told PTI.

The scientists think that it is expected that quantum computers can be used to solve hard optimisation problems, guarantee secure communication, and help to find new molecules for medication or fertilizers that can make life better for many people.

"I think classical computers will remain most important for general use. In the future, it might be that a smaller quantum computer part is used for secure communication, true random number generators in the computers that can for example be used for encryption," said Jordan.

"An important point is, that quantum computers are only expected to outperform classical computers on certain tasks, not in general," she said.
Jordan feels, in research and industry, quantum processors can become useful for certain optimisation problems that are hard problems for classical computers and cannot be solved efficiently.

For example, she said, Microsoft is developing quantum computer algorithms that calculate the structure of new molecules that are optimised for medication or fertilizers.

However, Jordan noted that fully programmable quantum computers with a large number of qubits are expected to outperform classical computers on certain tasks, but not in general.

"From the laboratory side, many countries in Europe, China and the USA are putting their efforts to build small quantum machines. At the moment they are limited to tens of qubits only and are being used only for testing toy models in science," Joshi added.

Few years ago, D-Wave Systems, a Canadian startup, did manage to sell a few units of what it called "the world’s first commercial quantum computers” but has unfortunately not been able to get the confidence of industry experts. Things changed when NASA summoned some journalists to its Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California where Hartmut Neven, the man heading Google's Quantum Artificial Intelligence lab which it established with an aim of experimenting with the D-Wave machine, launched the first real evidence that it has what it takes to offer the power proponents of quantum computing had initially promised.

To recall, in 2013 search giant Google partnered with the U.S. space agency NASA and announced the Quantum A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) Lab, a place where researchers from around the world can experiment with the incredible powers and possibilities of quantum computing.

In 2016, it was considered that Google might be able to present the world with a phenomenally powerful quantum computer by the end of 2017 but the expectations failed as obvious.

A Google research team led by <em>John Martinis</em> have been working on how quantum computers could be worked out for a long duration of 30 years.

In March this year, Google unveiled Bristlecone, which is its new Quantum Processor that uses the same scheme for coupling, control, and readout, but is scaled to a square array of 72 qubits. Googlde chose a device of this size to be able to demonstrate quantum supremacy in the future, investigate first and second order error-correction using the surface code, and to facilitate quantum algorithm development on actual hardware.
