'CodeQueens' - A Girls-only Hackathon to Promote Gender Diversity in Computer Science, by Codingal

‘CodeQueens’ is an online hackathon for grade 1-12 school girls that aims to close the gender gap in the field of programming and computer science in India

Young girls with an interest in computers and coding have a special event to look forward to starting this month. India’s leading coding platform for K-12 students Codingal is hosting ‘CodeQueens’, an online app, game, and website development hackathon exclusively for K-12 girl students.

Spread over two months, the CodeQueens hackathon will feature multiple coding challenges to build functional websites, apps or games. The hackathon is divided into three groups: Junior (class 1-4), Middle (class 5-8) and Senior (class 9-12) and is open to individual registrations. Winners from each group will receive exclusive scholarships from Codingal.

Vivek Prakash, Cofounder of Codingal said, “The CodeQueens hackathon is our sincere effort to promote gender diversity in the coding space and to boost young girls’ interest and participation in computer programming and related fields.”

To win the hackathon, participants in the Junior group need to build an app, game or animation around the story of Cinderella, or any other fairytale of their choice that has a female as the main character.

In the Middle Group, participants need to build an app or website with useful information about any female role model that inspires them. Senior Group participants are tasked with building an app or a website on the theme of gender equality, with useful information addressing the gender gap issues that exist today, and the necessary steps to combat them.

“While India may have the highest percentage of female STEM graduates, only 14% of them hold STEM jobs (World Bank data). The goal of encouraging female coders is to prepare them for future job-readiness. Hackathons are a great way to enhance coding skills and proficiency. They offer hands-on learning and let participants apply their learning, ideas, and creativity together to solve a problem,” Vivek added.

Code Obfuscation: What it is and should You Use It?

Certain programming languages like .NET and Java can very easily be decompiled to readable sources. There are a lot of definitions about the code obfuscation, but to explain it better we the code obfuscation is the process that makes your application binaries slightly harder to read with a decompiler. It is a very important tool to protect the intellectual property of your business.

Why Obfuscate Code?

Some compiled languages get converted directly to bytecode, for example C++. If you want to reverse engineer, the only way to work is with a disassembler, which is a complicated and arduous process. Though, it is not impossible, inferring high level app logic from a stream of assembly language is quite difficult.

On the other side, languages like Java and C# are not compiled for any particular OS. They are more complied to an intermediary language, such as MSIL from .NET’s. This intermediary language is very similar to assembly, but it's very easily converted back into the source code. So this does mean that in case you have a executable or public Dynamic-link library (DLL), anyone who possesses a copy of your executable are able to open it up in, let's say dotPeek (.NET decompiler), and directly read your source code, and copy it as well.

Any .NET DLL can be plugged into a decompiler, so code obfuscation cannot prevent this process. But what obfuscation does is use a number of things in order to make the source code very annoying to read and debug.

Renaming is the simplest form of this entity. It is a very common practice to properly name all of the methods, variables, parameters and classes according to what function they do. But of course you don’t have to do that, so there is nothing that is really stopping you from naming them with lowercase L’s and I, or random similar combinations of unicode characters, just to make the code very hard to read and debug. For the computer it is all the same, but to a human is very difficult to distinguish.

It could look something like this:

IlIIIIlIIIllIIIllIIll

lIIIllIIllIlIIIIlIIIl

(neat, right?)

This process will be handled automatically by a basic obfuscator, taking the output from the build and then converting it to something that is really, really hard to read. By doing this there is no performance decrease to non-obfuscated code.

There are types of advanced obfuscators that can make it possible to change the structure of the source code. This means it can replace control structures with identical syntax but it looks more complicated.

It can also embed a code that doesn't do anything, but it would make it harder to read for the decompiler. This means the source would look like 'spaghetti code' - which means it would annoy anyone who tries to read the code.

Hiding strings - is one of the common things. In this way, string obfuscation can replace strings with encoded messages - which are also decrypted, and it makes it difficult to search for them from a decompiler.

There are lots of options for obfuscators, it depends on the language the obfuscators are using. For example, Obfuscar, ProGuard, Javascript-obfuscator. etc.

Another option: You can convert to a Compiled Language

Actually, you can convert one programming language to another one, isn't that a hard or crazy idea. It is an effective way to secure games from cracking, and it is an important step to do when protecting from piracy and cheaters. For example, Unity uses an IL2CPP converter to transform .NET code into C++ bytecode.

Is it necessary to Obfuscate?

Untrusted environments exist - so if you are using a code, and you want to secure it, it is important to use an obfuscator to make decompiling hard.

Securing your code is a must. Using an obfuscator is a must. If you don't want anybody to decompile your app, you should try switching to a language that doesn't have these problems.

Coding is the New Age Skill: National Education Policy 2020

After a gap of 30 years on 29th July 2020, the Government announced the “Education Policy 2020”. The policy mentioned many changes along with making coding a part of the school curriculum from Grade 6 onwards. According to Gaurav Perti, CEO – Purpletutor, “Coding which was once viewed by parents as co-curricular, has now moved mainstream”. This is a marked shift and makes coding on par with math, science and other subjects. Purpletutor which teaches coding to kids in the age group of 6-16 years has seen a surge of enquiries in the last 4 months, says parents now don’t need to be convinced on the importance of coding.

Coding was already a part of school curriculum in many countries like the USA and other developed markets. In India, some schools have started to realise the importance of the computer science, but adoption has been slow. With the proposed changes, this will bring about a sea of change and that too in quick time. Schools by and large in the earlier grades have been teaching computer applications & how to use a computer. “Learning coding has so many benefits, like improvement in logical thinking, critical reasoning and even creativity” says Gaurav Perti. This focus towards learning coding will bring the curriculum of Indian schools on par with some of the best of the world.

Coding is seen as the skill of the next decade, CEO’s of all major companies, from IBM, Microsoft, etc realise the importance of coding. The ever increasing reliance on technology has given enough of the thrust over the years to recognize coding as a key skill. With the COVID-19 pandemic, digital transformation in each company has seen an accelerated pace and technology adoption has been rapid, the physical and digital world’s a merging to an extent. While it is to be seen finally the changes the National Education Policy brings in at a school level, one thing is sure that technology or coding skills are going to be one of the most demanded skills.

Bangalore Based Nocode Platform, Codeninja.Ai Raises Seed Round From Angels Investors

CodeNinja.ai, a Bengaluru based startup has raised a seed round of investment through EaSyndicate, the Early Adapters Syndicate in Letsventure.com. The investment amount is undisclosed but lies between the range of $100K-$300K.

"No-code development platform (NCDPs) allows programmers and non-programmers to create application software through graphical user interfaces and configuration instead of traditional computer programming. Codeninja.ai is an Artificial Intelligence powered nocode platform which can generate application development code in Android, iOS and Web. CodeNinja.ai has already been adapted by a number of corporate and MSME companies to build and deploy their applications. Hari Balasubramanian , a seasoned Angel Investor led this round of investment and will also be joining the company's board.

The company plans to utilize the investment for product development and global expansion. They also want to build a DIY curriculum for users to develop applications without the help of developers.

CodeNinja.ai was founded in April 2017 by Prashanth Kuppur, Deepak Kalhan, Saurabh Kukreti and Richpal Gora. The team has combined 60 years of experience in building scalable applications with expertise in cloud solutions and software development.

Commenting on the announcement, Prashanth Kuppur, Founder & CEO, CodeNinja.ai said, "Technology is revolutionizing the way we do business with high-tech approaches like artificial engineering, and machine learning. However, application development is still untouched by these advancements and follows the same path for ages with the developer, tester, and DevOps at the core. This is what we are trying to re-engineer at CodeNinja.AI making technology accessible to everyone, anyone. Anyone can build an enterprise-grade application at the speed of light to gain a competitive advantage."

Talking about the covid-19 situation, CBO & Co-founder, CodeNinja.ai, added, “It did initially hit our growth. However, CodeNinja.ai is back on the momentum. At the time of lockdown, we have got multiple new clients and also exclusively working on the "Do-It-Yourself" platform ( CodeNinja.ai V2.0 ) and planning to open the platform to all small scale industries, Mid Size Software development companies, and Enterprises. We've seen 50%-60% increase in our revenue during this period."

The ever growing need of developers is a huge cost to the organizations. It's a challenge to hire developers on a short notice. CodeNinja.ai platform addresses this challenge by allowing business to define their business model and workflows which are then translated into machine codes and transformed into applications (android,iOS and web). The idea is to provide an AI powered Rapid application development platform at a better and convenient cost.

Commenting on the investment, lead investor Hari Subramanian said, ""NOCODE platforms are already a very important component in the innovation toolbox used by entrepreneurs , innovators and corporate software development teams. It allows building and deploying applications very rapidly in multiple platforms where the focus is more on solving the business problem rather than understanding how to write code using various software tools. The team at codeninja.ai has taken up a very bold and futuristic vision of building a global platform which can disrupt the way applications are developed and deployed in todays marketplace. EaSyndicate is an early adopters syndicate of investors in letsventure.com where the investors actively support founding teams by supporting market validation and providing early adopters for testing and using the innovative product of the startup. We are very happy to support such disruptive innovation, which has a global appeal."

As per the startup, Zero-code solutions remove a crucial bottleneck and reduce dependency on IT for essential apps. All one needs is an idea. With handy interfaces of the platform, one can add the models they need, and publish. There is no need for any debugging or testing later. CodeNinja.ai gives the freedom to create any app. There mantra goes - 'If you have the idea, you can make it'.

CodeNinja.ai aims to become the fastest growing coding platform in India. They provide thie solutions to IT application development, services organizations, startups which have IT products/Services as offerings, System Integrators, Cloud service providers and Security solution providers.

  • Finale day celebrations concluded with a job fair for IT professionals where half a dozen companies hired women technologists for their firms

It was a ‘David versus Goliath’ scenario at TechGig Geek Goddess 2019 finale when Tanneeru Leela took on more than 73,387 women technologists to win this year’s title crown. She braved 375 women technologists at the four-hour-long,offline final code competition to clinch the crown.

TechGig Geek Goddess is the annual, women-only coding competition from TechGig that brings together women programmers from all the walks of life to showcase their technology skills and claim their glory. In its fifth edition, TechGig Geek Goddess recorded the highest ever participation at 73,388+.
The 2019 edition was announced on August 19 and was closed for submissions on October 21. All the code submissions were checked on various parameters, including innovation, quality, the ease of application among others. After the rigorous check, only 375 women technologists were invited for the finale day hackathon on November 8, 2019, at the Four Seasons hotel in Bengaluru.

The event was graced by some of the most notable names of India’s IT industry. The event began with an inaugural address by Ruchika Panesar, Vice President Global Services Group Technology and Head of Technology - India, American Express. Dr Neeta Verma, Director General, NIC delivered a special address at the event. A series of panel discussions ensued in the evening ceremony where technology and diversity leaders from Goldman Sachs, Automation Anywhere, Wipro, Oracle, Cisco, Capgemini, TomTom, Xoriant, Cognizant, Capgemini, American Express and RBS participated.

This year’s competition was intense with the introduction of cutting edge technologies as hackathon themes. They are being: Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML), Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Cloudify everything, Solution hunters’ hackathon, among others.

“We saw enthusiastic participation for niche themes as RPA, AI/ML with the registrations in the range of 4,000-6,000. This is proof that women technologists are raring to work and shine in the new-age technology streams. Owing to a tough selection process and high cut-off marks in the prelim and semi-final rounds, out of 73,388 registrations, only 375 women technologists made it to the final round. With only 0.51% of participants making it to the finale, I feel that all the finalists were best of the best coding minds in India. To win over this genius talent pool is a true feat and I congratulate all winners for their indomitable spirit,” said Sanjay Goyal, Business Head, TimesJobs and TechGig

Adding to that Ram Awasthi, VP – Technology, Times Internet mentioned, “This is the first time that I am a part of the TechGig Geek Goddess finale event. The energy here is infectious and I was amazed to see such young girls coding enthusiastically using the new-age technologies like Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Cloud and others.”

TechGig Geek Goddess 2019 edition finale day was marked by a live hackathon in the morning, followed by a Women Disruptors’ Conference in the evening, followed by a glitzy awards ceremony. Like last year, this year too TechGig Geek Goddess is presented by American Express, a globally integrated payments company. Goldman Sachs, a leading global investment bank and active investor in India, is the contest’s platinum partner this year.

Ruchika Panesar, Vice President Global Services Group Technology and Head of
Technology - India, American Express heartily congratulated all the hackathon participants. “This outstanding accomplishment is the latest chapter in an inspiring story about women achieving great things in technology. At American Express, we strive to be a place where women want to work and build careers. It’s fantastic to see so many women technologists compete in this unique event, and we’re excited to see what all of you go on to achieve in the world. Congratulations to TechGig Geek Goddess for creating this great platform to nurture talented women in technology,” she said.

Overall, nine winners were felicitated at the ceremony. Collectively, all winners took home prizes worth Rs 7,50,000.

India’s Top Women Coders to Battle it out as TechGig Geek Goddess 2019 is Announced

She came. She coded. She conquered. Hailing from a remote village in Bihar, the story of Snehlata Mishra from being an unspotted talent in the world of technology to conquering a 95-day long coding battle and becoming the Champion of TechGig Geek Goddess 2018, is nothing short of inspirational.

Giving wings to the dreams of many such talented women technologists, India’s biggest online technology community, TechGig recently announced the new edition of the popular coding contest, Geek Goddess 2019. This women-only coding competition was declared open for registrations on August 19 and will be accepting code submissions till October 14, 2019. So far, the edition has garnered 37,705 registrations.

For decades, there has been a lot of talk on improving the representation of women in technology, but little improvement on the ground. Several underlying biases have worked against women in the field of technology. A TechGig survey conducted among women IT professionals revealed that as many as 74% of women in technology believe that a definite bias exists against them and, hence their suggestions are often dismissed by their male colleagues.

"TechGig Geek Goddess 2019 promises to be bigger and better than all of its previous editions. The kind of enthusiastic queries that we have already received from our community makes me believe that this year’s edition of Geek Goddess will do justice to the expectations and help corporate India spot the brightest and most talented women IT professionals in the country. My best wishes to all the participants", said Sanjay Goyal, Business Head, TimesJobs and TechGig.

Similar to last year, American Express, a globally integrated payments company, has joined hands with TechGig in its journey to find the best women technologists in India.

“We’re delighted to once again partner with TechGig Geek Goddess on this ground-breaking competition,” said Ruchika Panesar, vice president of technology at American Express.

“We believe that an inclusive and diverse workforce provides a competitive advantage in the marketplace. American Express is committed to developing a talent pool that brings together unique perspectives, backgrounds and experiences, and we’re proud to stand by side with TechGig to back women in technology.”

The fifth edition of this popular coding contest for women technologists will witness intense competition in themes like Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Cloudify Everything, Solution Hunters Hackathon among others.

Over the years, TechGig Geek Goddess code competition has witnessed enthusiastic participation from women coders from across India. In fact, in the previous year, the competition saw participation from 68,791 women technologists and helped several women techies realise their dreams.

“I enjoyed every minute of the event. Everything was executed so perfectly! After meeting and listening to all women leaders, I am more motivated and rebel. In today’s world where we are constantly talking about gender diversity, TechGig is one platform which is doing something about it. I would highly recommend this great platform for all women coders to showcase their skills,” said Snehlata Mishra, TechGig Geek Goddess 2018 champion.

Another promising technology talent from the 2018 competition, Nithya Vasudevan, the Machine Learning theme winner said, “TechGig Geek Goddess was a good opportunity for many of us to showcase our talent and motivate us by introducing us to women leaders from top IT/Tech companies. TechGig is a great platform to create transparency between coders, technology enthusiasts and top companies.”

Secure A Job In Silicon Valley By Playing This Coding Game

With the changing times, it comes as no surprise that the norms of hiring and requirement have also changed. A prime example of this is CodeFights, an online game that is offering programming enthusiasts a chance to polish their skills and get discovered by Silicon Valley giants. An excellent way to amp up your skills and career at the same time, right?

This exactly what happened to London based James Johnston. In a statement given to CNNMoney, Johnston discloses that he discovered CodeFights through a Facebook advertisement in June this year, and was hooked. After playing the coding challenges for two nights in a row, he got a pop-up message asking if he would be interested in looking at new job opportunities. After he ticked yes, he got a call directly from CodeFights founder and CEO, Tigran Sloyan, to take forward the discussion about potential job opportunities.

After going through a number of interviews, Johnston landed up a job at startup named Thumbtack, that's currently valued at more than $1 billion. In addition to him landing the job, he also got a stake in the business.

Launched in the year 2014, San Francisco-based CodeFights has successfully managed to register a whopping 500,000 users by now. Since the platform is absolutely free to use, the game has become a massive hit among programmers. The best of the CodeFights players are then chosen by the startup for various job opportunities and introduced to prospective employers.

According to the startup, as many as 200 firms are using the platform to find new recruits as their own return on investment is a lot better with CodeFights since all of these people have already been vetted for their technical skills.

The startup charges companies recruiting through them a fee that's equivalent to 15% of the annual salary of the employee that is hired through the platform. This means, if an employee hired through the platform will draw a salary worth $100,000 per year, CodeFights would get $15,000 as a fee from the firm. Though the 15% fee might seem a little steep in theory, but according to the companies that have already hired through the platform it is totally worth it.

Seeing the great growth potential that the startup holds, it comes as no surprise that it recently raised $10 million to fuel its expansion. Further, Microsoft's former head of corporate strategy Charlie Songhurst, is also slated to join CodeFights' board of directors soon.

Are Women Better Coders Than Men?

Biases against women in the workplace have been documented in several studies, but it turns out that popular opinion that women perform less well in technical jobs could be wildly wrong. A recent study by US researchers has found that computer code written by women tends to be rated more highly than that written by men.

Prepints released the study, entitled "Gender Bias in open Source:Pull Request acceptance of womenVs Men" .This probably was the largest study
up-to now on gender bias .

Researchers analyzed data from GitHub, a San Francisco-based open source software community with more than 12 million users who collaborate on coding projects by suggesting solutions to various problems. By tracking users using social networks and Google, the researchers were able to obtain the gender of 1.4 million users, which allowed them to assemble the largest scale study of gender bias to date.

The team examined whether men and women were equally likely to have their coding suggestions, known as a pull request, accepted on GitHub. They hypothesized that pull requests made by women were less likely to be accepted than those made by men. After all, the number of women in computer science are dwarfed by the number of men – according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 73 percent of the field is comprised of men.
The researchers were quick to note that their study does not definitively provide that differences between gendered interactions are caused by bias among individuals, but the trend is "troubling" nonetheless, they said, especially in a field like open source software, which is often praised for being a meritocracy.

When Chantal Marin, developer at Microsoft was asked about it,she says,
"I don’t think that it matters. I can just notice a slight difference in the organisation and documentation of the code. Usually women seem to be more organised and write cleaner code."

If accurate, the study would reinforce the perception against women in the tech work environment, where gender disparity is common. For example, only 18 per cent of Google’s global technical staff is women. In a 2013 survey of the more than 2000 open source developers who indicated their gender, only 11.2 per cent were women. Recent research has also suggested that diverse software development teams are more productive than homogeneous teams.
