Google, Microsoft, Amazon Emerge as India’s Most Desired Employers for Gen Z: Insights from 37,000 Students

Google, Microsoft, Amazon Emerge as India’s Most Desired Employers for Gen Z: Insights from 37,000 Students
  • Only 36% of HR leaders feel fully prepared to hire and manage Gen Z talent, revealing a growing readiness gap
  • Nearly 27% of candidates drop out of hiring processes due to a lack of pay transparency
  • 78% of organisations run internship programmes, but only 16% convert over 80% of interns into full-time hires
  • 90%+ Gen Z professionals are willing to accept slightly lower compensation if roles offer stronger learning opportunities, faster career progression

Unstop, a leading platform connecting ~30 million students and early professionals with career opportunities, has released the Unstop Talent Report 2026, “Era of Human + AI: Decoding India’s Talent Landscape.” Based on insights from 37,000+ students and 500+ HR leaders, the report highlights how Gen Z professionals are redefining career expectations, preferred workplaces, and early career priorities.

Most Desirable Employers for Gen Z in 2026

Going away from the common motion of treating McKinsey, Unilever, and other consulting firms as dream employers in B-Schools, global technology leaders dominate Gen Z career aspirations, with Google, Microsoft, and Amazon emerging as the most preferred employers among both engineering and B-School audiences.

Sector Highlights

  • BFSI: Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Morgan Stanley; HDFC Bank enters top 5.
  • Consulting: McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company, Boston Consulting Group.
  • FMCG/FMCD: Hindustan Unilever Ltd, ITC Limited, Nestlé.
  • Service Companies (Engineering): TCS, Infosys, Wipro.
  • Product Technology: Google, Microsoft, Amazon.
  • Indian Conglomerates: Tata Administrative Services, Reliance Industries Limited, Aditya Birla Group.
  • New-age Recruiters: Eternal, Swiggy, Meesho.

Gen Z Priorities: Learning, Transparency, and Flexibility

When choosing their first job, learning opportunities emerge as the strongest motivator for Gen Z, with 60–65% prioritising learning and skill development. Salary considerations rank lower at 11–13%.

Transparent pay and clear career progression are critical expectations, with nearly 27% of candidates dropping out of hiring processes due to lack of salary transparency.

Organisations Still Catching Up with Gen Z Expectations

Only 36% of HR leaders feel fully prepared to hire and manage Gen Z talent. 49–59% of early career employees leave organisations due to lack of growth opportunities. 90%+ Gen Z professionals are willing to accept slightly lower compensation if roles offer stronger learning opportunities, faster career progression, and better work–life balance.

Changing Campus Hiring Dynamics

95% of students are open to off-campus opportunities if better roles are available. Students at campuses where 150+ companies visit annually are nearly 2.9 times more likely to secure placements compared to campuses with fewer than 30 recruiters.

Internships Becoming the New Hiring Gateway

78% of organisations run internship programmes, but only 16% convert more than 80% of interns into full-time hires. Students expect internships to provide real work from day one, mentorship, and clear pathways to PPOs.

Early Attrition Begins Early

HR leaders cite higher studies (38%), better pay (30%), job-role mismatch (23%), and better company brands (22%) as leading reasons for early attrition. Around 26% of freshers remain on bench for 3–6 months before receiving meaningful work, increasing the likelihood of early job switches.

Gen Z is entering the workforce with a very different set of expectations compared to previous generations. They value transparency, learning opportunities, and meaningful growth over traditional markers of employment. Through the Unstop Talent Report 2026, we aim to provide organisations with actionable insights that can help them better understand and engage the next generation of talent. — Ankit Aggarwal, Founder and CEO of Unstop.

Apple’s India Supply Chain Powers 3.5 Lakh Employment Opportunities

Apple’s India Supply Chain Powers 3.5 Lakh Employment Opportunities

Apple’s expansion in India has generated around 3.5 lakh jobs, including 1.2 lakh direct jobs. These roles span manufacturing, logistics, and allied services, supported by Apple’s partnerships with 45 suppliers such as Foxconn, Tata Electronics, Aequs, Jabil, Microplastics, ATL, and over 20 Indian MSMEs. This figure excludes the workforce at Apple’s five iPhone factories in India.
  • Diversification Strategy: Apple is reducing reliance on China by strengthening its India base.
  • Make in India Alignment: The move supports India’s push for domestic manufacturing.
  • Upskilling Opportunities: Workers gain exposure to global technology standards, enhancing India’s tech talent pool.
  • Economic Impact: Beyond job creation, this strengthens India’s position in global electronics manufacturing.
Apple has built a strong supplier network of 45 firms, ranging from global giants like Foxconn, Tata Electronics, Aequs, Jabil, Microplastics, and ATL to more than 20 Indian MSMEs. This figure does not even account for the workforce employed at Apple’s five iPhone factories in the country, which further adds to the scale of employment.

The initiative is part of Apple’s broader strategy to diversify production away from China and establish India as a long-term hub for manufacturing and exports. It aligns closely with the Indian government’s “Make in India” program, strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities and boosting the nation’s electronics ecosystem. Beyond sheer job creation, Apple’s presence is helping to upskill workers by exposing them to global technology standards, thereby enhancing India’s talent pool.

Economically, the impact extends beyond employment. Apple’s growing footprint is expected to increase India’s electronics exports, attract more foreign investment, and solidify the country’s position in global supply chains. This expansion underscores how multinational corporations can simultaneously achieve strategic diversification while contributing to local economic development.

India’s Skill Revolution Accelerates: PM Modi Unveils PM-SETU, Felicitates ITI Toppers, Inaugurates 1,200 School Skill Labs

At a grand ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi presided over the Kaushal Deekshant Samaroh, felicitating 46 All India Toppers from Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the country. This marked the 4th edition of the National Skill Convocation, a unique initiative that was first conceptualised under the inspiration of the Prime Minister to make skill development aspirational.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister also launched PM-SETU (Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs) — a landmark ₹60,000 crore centrally sponsored scheme to transform 1,000 Government ITIs across India into modern, industry-aligned training institutions.

PM-SETU will follow a hub-and-spoke model, with 200 hub ITIs linked to 800 spoke ITIs. Each hub will be equipped with advanced infrastructure, innovation and incubation centres, production units, training of trainer facilities, and placement services, while the spokes will extend access and outreach. The scheme will:
  • Introduce new, demand-driven courses and revamp existing ones in collaboration with industry;
  • Set up Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) with credible Anchor Industry Partners to manage clusters and ensure outcome-based training;
  • Create pathways for long-term diplomas, short-term courses, and executive programs;
  • Strengthen 5 National Skill Training Institutes in - Bhubaneswar (Odisha), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Hyderabad (Telangana), Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), Ludhiana (Punjab), as Centres of Excellence with global partnerships.
Under the first phase of PM-SETU, 15 hub-and-spoke ITI clusters have been identified across the country, spanning diverse regions and industrial ecosystems. These include Sonipat (Haryana), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Bijnor and Meerut (Uttar Pradesh), Haridwar (Uttarakhand), Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), Bengaluru Urban (Karnataka), Bharatpur (Rajasthan), Darbhanga and Patna (Bihar), Hoshiarpur (Punjab), Hyderabad (Telangana), Sambalpur (Odisha), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), and Guwahati (Assam)

Each cluster will serve as a centre of excellence in skills, equipped with advanced infrastructure, modern trades, and industry-led training, creating model ecosystems that can be replicated nationwide.

Adding a transformative step for school education, the Prime Minister also virtually inaugurated 1,200 Vocational Skill Labs set up in 400 Navodaya Vidyalayas and 200 Eklavya Model Residential Schools across 34 States and UTs.

These labs are designed to expose school-going children, including those from rural and tribal areas, to hands-on training in 12 high-demand sectors such as Information Technology, Automotive, Agriculture, Electronics, Logistics, BFSI and Tourism. Each lab is equipped with modern machinery, digital tools and simulation-based learning modules. In line with NEP 2020 and the CBSE curriculum, 1,200 vocational teachers have been trained to deliver industry-relevant learning, building an early pipeline of future-ready talent. This initiative will ensure that skilling starts at the school level, empowering students to explore multiple career pathways early in life.

In his address, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi underscored the central role of Industrial Training Institutes in shaping India’s skilled workforce. He said –
ITIs are not only premier institutions of industrial education, they are also the workshops of an Atmanirbhar Bharat.” He noted that these institutes are nurturing millions of young Indians with practical knowledge and employable skills, turning them into confident contributors to the nation’s economy. The Prime Minister emphasised that as India marches towards becoming a skill-based economy, ITIs will remain the bedrock of this transformation, equipping youth with the tools to thrive in a rapidly evolving global market.

Speaking on the occasion, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, said: “Today, Hon’ble Prime Minister has given a clear message to India’s youth — focus on your skills, pursue quality education and keep moving forward with confidence. Eleven years ago, when he created a dedicated Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, he laid the strong foundation for a Viksit Bharat. With initiatives like Kaushal Deekshant Samaroh, PM-SETU and the Skill Labs, we are carrying forward that vision to empower every young Indian to become self-reliant, capable and globally competitive.

These announcements reaffirm the Government’s commitment to transforming India into a skill-based economy, preparing youth for opportunities in India and across the world, and accelerating the journey towards Viksit Bharat @2047.

Whether in technology, healthcare, finance, or any other field, possessing up-to-date skills not only opens doors to better opportunities but also ensures job security and professional relevance in a rapidly changing world.

Recruiters today prioritize candidates with industry-relevant skills, as businesses seek professionals who can contribute immediately without extensive training. With rapid technological advancements and shifting market demands, companies value expertise in emerging tools, data analytics, digital transformation, and leadership. A nodal agency will verify employment reports, and companies failing to comply will face penalties.

As per state government officials, this bill aims to promote local employment, however it has also faced criticism for potential discrimination.

Implications

The Karnataka State Employment of Local Candidates in the Industries, Factories and Other Establishments Bill, 2024 could have several implications for global firms operating in Karnataka such as finding qualified local candidates for specialized roles might be challenging, especially in technology, AI, and semiconductor industries.Companies may need to invest in skill development and training programs to bridge any gaps.

Establishments will need to allocate resources for compliance monitoring, documentation, and reporting. Non-compliance could result in penalties, impacting a company's financials.

Companies may evaluate their long-term viability in Karnataka based on the feasibility of meeting local hiring quotas. Some firms might consider diversifying their operations across states with different regulations.

Technology firms, including those in the semiconductor industry, may face unique challenges due to the specialized nature of their workforce. Renewable energy and waste management companies may need to adapt their hiring strategies.

Remember, the bill aims to boost local employment, but its implementation and impact will be closely watched by businesses and policymakers alike.

India’s Employable Talent Leaps from 46.2% to 50.3% - India Skills Report 2023

India’s Employable Talent Leaps from 46.2% to 50.3% - India Skills Report 2023
  • Automotive, Engineering & Internet Businesses will capitalise on the Job Market, helping India create a skilled and employable workforce.
  • Huge demand of Internship Opportunities: 89% of Graduates seek Internship opportunities
  • Gender Gap in Employability improves
The Wheebox India Skills Report 2023, in collaboration with CII, Taggd, AICTE, AIU, Sunstone, Pearson, AWS and Economic Times, examines the demand and supply for talent and hiring intent of jobs. The findings of the report suggest that in contrast with last year's employability figures of 46.2%, 50.3% of young people were found to be highly employable overall, according to ISR 2023, which is a significant improvement. The percentage of employable women workforce has increased to 52.8%, compared to 47.2% for men. The report also points out that 89% of graduates were actively seeking for internship opportunities. The survey indicates that candidates from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Delhi had the highest employability. Amongst B.Tech, MBA and B.Com were found to be the most employable talent from amongst various domains.

Mumbai, Lucknow & Mangalore were the cities with the most employable talent and the most preferred cities for work by graduates were Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi/NCR.

Speaking on this occasion, Nirmal Singh, Chief Convenor of India Skills Report, Founder & CEO, Wheebox said, “As we celebrate India at 75, it is imperative now that we harness the demographic dividend. The world is rapidly ageing, but India is still young. In the next few decades, India will be a talent powerhouse and one of the largest contributors to the global workforce.”

He added, “If India’s demographic dividend is productively leveraged, growth prospects will brighten, helping it to leapfrog its GDP from the current $3 trillion+ to double by 2030. Globally, of the total workforce in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), women have only 28% representation, a sorry state of affairs indeed.”

If the country needs to realize true talent potential, the focus should be training and skilling more women in technology by promoting skilling, entrepreneurship, and market linkage support to women building technology start-ups and tech-driven businesses. I believe that if India focuses on two key metrics: more female participation in STEM and more female workforce participation, India will double its economy in half the time it would take otherwise to do so”.

"India is set out on a path of growth and its fast moving private industry has been one of the defining factors. There is a renewed need and focus on upskilling fresh talent to meet and adapt with the demands of the ever evolving industry. At Sunstone, we are involved in bridging the widening gap between the industry and academia and trying to reduce the gap between acquired knowledge and required knowledge. India Skill Report 2023 highlights the specifics of skill gaps pertaining to different sectors, geographies and industry. Sunstone -as its education partner is committed to the vision of skilling India and reaching out to the last mile aspirant via our offering” said Piyush Nangru, Co Founder and COO Sunstone.

The report points out that India will be hiring most in the Automotive, Engineering and Internet Business. Additionally, companies across India show a hiring intent of 36.08% for the demand forecast of 2023. The report also pointed out that the courses most in demand in 2023 will be B.Com and MBA with the most employable talent at 60.62% and 60.1% respectively. BE/B.Tech domain candidates are the third most employable, in the domain-wise employability category, with employability being 57.44%. According to the study, the demand for skilled labour is being driven by the BFSI, pharmaceutical, e-commerce, and IT/ITES sectors. Freshmen hiring in these fields is projected to increase by 20% in 2023 compared to 2022

Leverage the highly employable women resources.

India’s female participation in the workforce currently stands at 33% as compared to 67% participation for their male counterparts. Interestingly the employability for female talent is around 5.6% more than that of men. If India aspires to become a global leader in providing skilled talent, then it is recommended that more policy-level changes are needed to increase workforce participation both in the private sector as well as the government sector.

Rajasthan was reported to have the greatest percentage of employable females who were prepared for the workforce (53.56%) while Uttar Pradesh came in second with 46.51% of employable women.

Given the significant shift in gender-based employability over time—more women have regularly been found to be highly employable than men over the past few years—the positive consequences of cultural and economic developments are encouraging.

The India Skills Report is a synthesis of two independent and complementary studies: the Wheebox National Employability Test, which examined young employability, and the India Hiring Intent Survey - Early Career Edition 2023, a primary research survey done for 150+ corporates across 15 industries. The Wheebox National Employability Test, or WNET, examined students’ employability by assessing their work readiness for India’s changing employment market.

Frontend, Data Science, AI and DevOps Are the Highest Paying Technology Sectors — Study

The accelerated digital transformation has opened a multitude of avenues in the technology sector, supplemented with significant demand for tech talent in the space. This has led to an unprecedented increase in the career prospects of technology experts, opening opportunities for some of the highest-paying jobs in the country.

To take just one example from the numerous comprehensive data points, according to the Report, streaming and OTT platforms pay the highest salaries for senior frontend talent (10+ years experience), followed by internet-based product companies for mid-level (6-10 years experience), and the food tech sector for junior level (2-5 years experience). E-commerce brands pay the highest senior-level salaries for backend tech, fintech pays most for data scientists, and quick commerce brands try to attract the best app development and management senior talent with the highest salaries.

The Report has also revealed some eye-opening figures about tech skills that are most popular among tech talent. Python dominates data science, winning in popularity with 75% of India’s data scientists specializing in it.

Among app developers, Android leads with 48%, which is 2x more popular than iOS (24%). Furthermore, React (also 24%) is the most popular frontend framework, whereas HTML and CSS (31%) are the most popular frontend languages among young tech talent in India.

The Report also confirms that Bangalore is the top city where tech candidates are located. It also reveals that remote and hybrid work has led to an increase in talent in Tier II & III cities. What this means for tech recruiters and talent acquisition specialists is that cities like Pune, Indore, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Chandigarh are excellent sources of tech talent, especially for newer tech roles in AI and app development. Given the rise in remote working, recruiters can leverage these sources.

Despite the rise in female talent on the whole, there is still a wide gender diversity gap in tech talent. The overall ratio is 25:75 females to males, on average. Backend developers face the widest gender diversity gap in Indian talent, witnessing a 17:83 ratio. On the other end of the gender divide, Quality Analysis has the narrowest gap, with 42% female profiles. Tech recruitment has a long way to go to close these gaps.

Stats state that there is a huge 20% demand-supply gap for tech talent in India which can grow 3x by 2026. The Report recommends that the Indian tech industry needs to encourage upskilling and reskilling among existing tech talent in the short term, and collaborate with educational institutions to upgrade the tech syllabi to create job-ready Indian tech talent in the long term.

What’s next?

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is happening. Tech talent trends show that new technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), cyber security, blockchain technology, and metaverse development are growing at an unprecedented rate. This is true for both: candidates and recruiters & talent acquisition leaders, across business verticals. As technology pervades businesses, new roles and specializations such as Web 3.0, cyber security & quality assurance, gaming developers, AR & VR platform integration coders, and computer vision technologists are poised to storm India’s tech talent recruitment strategies.
