8 Out of 10 Women in India have Faced Harassment via Calls, SMS: Truecaller

Eight out of 10 women in India receive harassment and nuisance calls with Chennai, New Delhi and Pune emerging as the most-affected metros by sexual harassment calls/SMS against women, according to a report by Truecaller.

The third edition of 'Understanding the impact of harassment calls and SMS for women in India' found eight out of 10 women respondents in India saying they have faced phone harassment and nuisance calls through calls and SMS messages.

Also, one out of five women respondents said they had received sexual and inappropriate calls. The most-affected cities in India are Chennai, New Delhi, Pune and Kolkata.

Interestingly, India also had the highest rate of women taking action against harassment calls/SMS among the countries surveyed (Kenya, Columbia, Brazil and Egypt).

The report noted that women in India share their number as a common practice, especially when recharging their phone at a store, visiting restaurants, shopping, entering contests and filling in logbooks.

When it comes to taking action against phone harassment, 85 per cent said they blocked the number. While most women chose to ignore this, only 12 per cent reported the number to authorities, the report said.

"We see a worrying trend of an increase in sexual harassment for women through calls and SMS. Normalising harassment has a devastating effect on the victims. Our campaign is building a community of people who are on a mission to encourage women to #MakeTheCall and to take action against such harassment by reporting it to the relevant authorities," Truecaller Managing Director Sandeep Patil said.

Truecaller stands against women's harassment in any and all forms, he added.

The study - supported by Ipsos - covered India, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt and Kenya. The sample size varied from 1,000 to 3,343 women for each market among the age group 18-40.

Risers Accelerator to Provide Initial Funding of up to ₹2 Cr to Startups Working towards Women Safety

Rising untoward incidents against women across the country require collective efforts to ensure that women are safe in the country. The government is doing its parts and Risers Accelerator – a group of 35 successful entrepreneurs based out of Delhi are aggressively promoting start-ups with a vision to bring positive changes in society. In this realm, Risers Accelerator has called out to give initial funding of up to Rs 2 crore to startups who innovate in technology for women safety. The funding amount may increase considering the scale and scope of the product.

Rachit Chawla

Risers focused on the need to improve women’s safety. So, in case everything fails at the last moment, the technology on your phone or any other device would be able to help your family / friends / police to locate you or warn you for any potential threat. "Reading about gory offences against women has made us think for weeks. We wanted to play a role in ensuring that women safety should be the prime concern. In this age of technology and startups, we came up with the idea that if any startup comes up with a feasible idea in this regard, we will help them in growing their business," says Rachit Chawla, Director – Technology & Finance, Risers Accelerator.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for 2017 released this year shows instances of reported rape surged from 34,651 in 2015 to 38,947 in 2016. Similar is the case with other crimes against women. "Startups are prospering in the country and many people look for ideas that have an impact on the country’s economy only. We wanted the people to think of startup ideas which not only take care of the commercial benefits but should also have a social impact," added Mr Chawla.

They added that as accelerator they want the tech startups to come at the front and be the partners in the change the country requires the most.

Marconi Society's Celestini Program Recognizes Indian Students Tackling Women's Safety & Air Pollution

The Marconi Society, dedicated to celebrating, inspiring and connecting the innovators building tomorrow’s digitally inclusive world, has awarded top prizes to students in India who crafted innovative solutions that address the growing challenges of women's safety and air pollution.

A team from Bharti Vidyapeeth College of Engineering, Delhi, has developed an Android application, Rakshak, that detects speech patterns via the audio microphone of the user’s smartphone. When the application detects audio snippets with speech commands requesting help or saying “stop” in distressed tones, it generates SOS alerts and the location of the user, and sends them to emergency contacts specified by the user. The app is now available on the Google Play store.

The solution took the top prize today in a contest organized in India by the Marconi Society’s Celestini Program. The Program, run by the Society's Young Scholars, is a flagship effort to inspire and connect individuals building tomorrow’s technologies in service of a digitally inclusive world. The Marconi Society and its Young Scholars select universities with promising telecommunications and engineering undergrads and provide them with support and mentorship to help tap their students’ true potential.

“This is the third successful year of the Celestini Program in India,” said Vint Cerf, Chair of the Marconi Society. “We see a clear trend of Celestini Program participants choosing research careers and technology-oriented graduate programs, which helps us fulfill our mission of inspiring the bright minds that will bring the benefits of connectivity to the next billion.”

The winning team of Piyush Agrawal, Subham Banga, Aniket Sharma and Ujjwal Upadhyay tackled the troubling issue of women's safety in India, where incidents of women under attack have become all too common. They started with publicly available speech command datasets, such as the Google Speech command dataset, then added speech commands specific to the scenario of women’s safety. They crowd-sourced additional data and open-sourced it as the Indian EmoSpeech Command dataset. This enabled them to detect emotion, background noise, and Indian accents in the audio with improved precision. Video demo here.

The team winning the second prize --also from Bharti Vidyapeeth College of Engineering, Delhi – addressed air quality since India has 14 of the 15 most polluted cities in the world according to the World Health Organization’s Global Ambient Air Quality Database. Team members Harshita Diddee, Shivam Grover, Shivani Jindal and Divyanshu Sharma created a privacy-aware smartphone application called VisionAir which uses photos of the horizon taken from a smartphone to estimate air quality. This builds on the work done by last year's Celestini Prize winners which showed that a machine learning model can be built to estimate air quality from an image by extracting image features such as transmission index or haziness and combining them with meteorological data and historical air quality data. The innovative aspect of this year’s application is to leverage federated learning to train the machine learning model in a privacy-aware manner instead of uploading photos from each user as shown in this tutorial. Federated learning only uploads the features extracted from the images without uploading the smartphone images to train the machine learning model.

The VisionAir team also enables other developers to create new machine learning models by open-sourcing a diverse set of smartphone images taken across several locations in Delhi, from different phones with ground truth air quality data from Central Pollution Control Board monitors and Airveda sensors.

Air Quality VisionAir App: Uses photos of horizon, combines with meteorological and ground truth measurements to estimate air quality

The winning team receives a cash prize of $1500 and the second-place team receives $500.The Celestini Program India partners with IIT Delhi and is anchored by Dr Aakanksha Chowdhery, a researcher in Google Brain, and a 2012 Marconi Young Scholar.

In addition to pursuing technical careers, Celestini Program India participants are building their careers by having their applications showcased in prominent forums such as the TensorFlow Developer Summit and Google I/O 2019.

“The Marconi Society’s Celestini Program is a unique and impactful way to help us create the next generation of technical innovators,” said Professor Brejesh Lall, Head of Bharti School of Telecom Technology and Management and Celestini Program partner at IIT Delhi. “Students become deeply engaged when they are defining the important problems that technology can solve and creating proof-of-concept applications that will make a difference in the world. The Marconi Society’s investment in mentorship, support and technology makes a true difference to these students’ career paths.”

The winning teams showcased their innovation at a function in IIT Delhi, today, where Padmasree Warrior, IIT Delhi alumnus and former CTO of Motorola and Cisco Systems, gave the keynote speech.

Details of the Celestini Program can be found here.

Safety is first on the priority list of many, whether men or women, while going out nowadays. Whether it's broad day light or the silent darkness at night, the alarming rate at which crimes like rape, assaults are increasing have turned the cities into fearful places where the best way to stay safe is lock yourself up in your houses and not venture out at all. While it seems like the most safe option but it is surely not a sane one for many of us who are either working or studying in order to earn our daily bread. Assuring the safety of these hard workers when they're away from their safety nests, their homes, is a safety device called SafeMate.

SafeMate is a dedicated personal safety device developed by Delhi-based MapmyIndia, a provider of digital maps, GPS navigation, and tracking. This personal safety device device can be purchased exclusively from Flipkart at Rs. 6,990.

RideSafe - A Mobile App Which Can Sense Trouble Even Before You Can

ridesafe app

Safety is the main concern nowadays. With the number of rape, murder and robbery cases increasing day by day, the number of people stepping out to enjoy at night or even in broad day light has decreased drastically.

The primary concern which we have while stepping out or even planning to step out is how would we commute.

In order to make travelling a part of the day that we would love rather than dread, a Bangalore based startup has come up with an app called RideSafetyApp that boosts itself as being the first REAL safety app for women in the world while commuting via road.

The app is a product of the wonderful minds of Geet Garg and Nishith Rastogi, who are IIT Kharagpur and BITS Pilani graduates respectively.

The app makes sure that whatever be the area or time of your commute, you're safe and sound and makes sure that your family knows the same. The app with its state-of-the-art RealTime Route Deviation Detection (R2D2) engine is extremely easy to install and use.

Though the taxi aggregators like (ola, uber, meru) have introduced the tracking feature, but the person tracking the ride will have to keep checking the link, every 5 minutes, But RideSafe would automatically inform the user and his contacts as soon as we notice deviation from the intended route! This can be extremely useful in places where the user is travelling for the first time.

A sample trip link, that is sent to user's selected contacts - http://goo.gl/MPMZKa

Once installed from the app store, the user is just required to enter his/her destination and the rest will be taken care by the app.The app will alarm the user if and when the driver deviates from the intended route.

If the driver deviates from the intended route, the app's algorithm will detect this in real-time and alert the user & user's family and friends. The app accounts for minor detours, shortcuts, traffic detours and several other edge cases.

Ridesafe stands out from a sea of other road safety apps available in the market for women. What makes it different is that fact that while in other applications the person tracking the ride is required to check the link in every five minutes, that is not the case with ridesafe. In ridesafe app, this function is done by the app itself.
As soon as it senses a deviation, the app will automatically buzz the user and his/her contacts.

Along with offering safety benefits, Ridesafe also provides its users with a host of other features. The application can be used to measure the total time taken to complete the journey, to calculate the average time and speed during the trip. It can also be used to sync up during meetings.

The app's user interface and UX are very simple and clean. The app can be downloaded free of cost and has the potential of putting all travelling worries of women to rest once and for all.

FrndiNeed Is An App For Taxi/Cab Passengers' Safety

FrndiNeed Is An App For Taxi/Cab Passengers' Safety

The recent Uber-Delhi rape case has brought the issue of women safety back into the public domain. It has also made travelling in the night for women tougher and scarier. But, all is not lost yet; there is an app in town which is adamant to win back the lost trust and security of the daily commuters. The app is called FrndiNeed and it has repackaged itself after the recent Uber case. It is here to fix the damage done by Uber.

FrndiNeed is a socially enabled application, which makes use of the user’s geographic location and connects him/her with friends in the vicinity and then requests them for a lift. The app is a variant of all those hundreds of apps available in the market that poke friends for instant meet-ups. It also comes with an SOS(Save our Souls)tab for emergency.

The app is a multipurpose app that makes everyday travel safer, smoother and economically viable. The app allows to poke a friend and request him/her to accept a request for a weekend trip. It even allows the user to plan a carpool. This feature is currently not available in beta.

According to Kunal Kishore, the co-founder of the app, the application was initially meant to help friends within 2-5 km radius to catch up with each other. But, when they developed the app in August, the company thought of incorporating women’s security also.

More and more applications are coming in the market which are not just looking to help the women at the times of crisis but also preventing such crisis situations altogether.  An example of this is Socialcops, an app that collects data from authorities and civilians in order to find the fastest and safest routes for users. The app even tells the police the areas and routes which need urgent attention.

According to Jasmeen Patheja, founder of the Blank Noise Project, such apps should be part of a larger system connecting the woman with neighborhood, the police and family, and not something that creates panic. Jasmeen said this in a statement to Economic Times.

The police is also making changes to its app in order to connect women in trouble directly to the police. The ‘DCP SahAya’ app will now incorporate a facility that will alert the police control room or the local police station directly. The app was launched six months ago.
