Trend Micro Launches its 1st Cloud One Data Center in India

The move enables enterprises to securely adopt a SaaS-based security framework

Bangalore, September 21, 2021 – Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704), the global leader in cloud security, today announced the launch of its Cloud One regional data center in India, to uphold data sovereignty and safeguard data privacy in the country.

Cloud One is Trend Micro’s flagship cloud security services platform for protecting servers, resources, and applications in the cloud. Trend Micro takes the lead by becoming one of the first security vendors to have the broadest set of services around cloud security, delivered out of India. This move follows Trend Micro’s launch of its regional XDR data lake in India last year.

Owing to the agility that cloud brings, organizations are increasingly embracing it, making SaaS the preferred model for security solutions delivery. However, many customers face regulatory or policy-based concerns around the location of SaaS platforms or data storage for their workloads. Having a data center within the country improves compliance and reduces friction for guidance and reporting requirements.

Speaking on the launch, Vijendra Katiyar, Country Manager, India & SAARC, Trend Micro said, “As a customer-focused organization, we help our customers to adopt cloud security services and give them the advantage to move to the cloud without worrying about data security and sovereignty. India is a significant market for us and to reinforce our commitment towards our customers in India, we have launched Trend Micro Cloud One data center for India region. 73% of Indian Organizations Expect to Experience a Breach of Customer Records in the Next Year

Trend Micro Cyber Risk Index shows organizations are at an elevated risk of attack

Bangalore, August 10, 2021 – Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global cybersecurity leader, today revealed that the risk of cyber attacks has increased in the last year. According to a new survey, 73% of organizations in India report they are likely to experience a data breach that impacts customer data in the next 12 months.

The findings come from Trend Micro’s biannual Cyber Risk Index (CRI) report, which measures the gap between respondents’ cybersecurity preparedness versus their likelihood of being attacked. In the first half of 2021, the CRI surveyed more than 3,600 businesses of all sizes and industries across Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe, and Latin America.

The CRI is based on a numerical scale of -10 to 10, with -10 representing the highest level of risk. The current index for India stands at -0.69, which indicates an “elevated” risk.

“Once again we’ve found plenty to keep CISOs awake at night, from operational and infrastructure risks to data protection, threat activity and human-shaped challenges,” said Vijendra Katiyar, Country Manager, India & SAARC, Trend Micro. “To lower cyber risk, organizations must be better prepared by going back to basics, identifying the critical data most at risk, focusing on the threats that matter most to their business, and delivering multi-layered protection from comprehensive, connected platforms."

Indian organizations ranked the top three negative consequences of an attack as lost IP, critical infrastructure damage/disruption, and cost of outside consultants and experts.

Key findings for India from the report include:
  • 57% said it was somewhat to very likely that they’d suffer serious cyber-attacks in the next 12 months.
  • 34% suffered 7+ cyber attacks that infiltrated networks/systems.
  • 20% had 7+ breaches of information assets.
  • 30% of respondents said they’d suffered 7+ breaches of customer data over the past year.

"Trend Micro’s CRI continues to be a helpful tool to help companies better understand their cyber risk,” said Dr. Larry Ponemon, CEO for the Ponemon Institute. “Businesses globally can use this resource to prioritize their security strategy and focus their resources to best manage their cyber risk. This type of resource is increasingly useful as harmful security incidents continue to be a challenge for businesses of all sizes and industries."

Among the top two infrastructure risks was cloud computing. Many respondents admitted they spend "considerable resources" managing third party risks like cloud providers.

In India, the top cyber threats highlighted in the report were as follows:
  • Ransomware
  • Watering hole attacks
  • Botnets
  • Malicious insiders
  • Advanced persistent threats (APT)
The top security risks to infrastructure include malicious insiders, cloud computing infrastructure and providers, organizational misalignment and complexity, as well as negligent insiders.

Sonit Jain, CEO of GajShield Infotech, said - "The report has not come as a surprise to us. With majority of employees still working from home and enterprises still not equipped to handle data security in the current scenario, we will see increased pace in attacks to their network and data. Companies will need to quantify their current risk posture all the time and ensure that their data is well secured even when access to critical data is provided to remote employees. Traditional risk strategies are no longer working. A security framework with contextual visibility and protection of information flow is critical to data security and helps in mitigating the risk from such attacks."

The main challenges for cybersecurity preparedness include organization’s IT security personnel having lack of sufficient knowledge, skill and expertise to protect data assets and IT infrastructure; IT security function complying with data protection and privacy requirements; as well as IT security architecture having high interoperability, scalability and agility.

Trust Lacking Within the Cybercriminal Underground - Trend Micro Research

Report details changing tactics and global demand for new malicious services like Deepfake ransomware and AI bots

Trend Micro Incorporated, a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, today released new data on cybercriminal operations and patterns for buying and selling goods and services in the underground. Trust has eroded among criminal interactions, causing a switch to e-commerce platforms and communication using Discord, which both increase user anonymization.

"This report highlights the threat intelligence we collect and analyze from global cybercriminal networks that enables us to alert, prepare and protect our corporate customers and partners," said Ed Cabrera, chief cybersecurity officer for Trend Micro. "This research helps us inform businesses early about emerging threats, such as Deepfake ransomware, AI bots, Access-as-a-Service and highly targeted SIM-swapping. A layered, risk-based response is vital for mitigating the risk posed by these and other increasingly popular threats."

The report reveals that determined efforts by law enforcement appear to be having an impact on the cybercrime underground. Several forums have been taken down by global police entities, and remaining forums experience persistent DDoS attacks and log-in problems impacting their usefulness.

Loss of trust led to the creation of a new site, called DarkNet Trust, which was created to verify vendors’ and increase user anonymity. Other underground markets have launched new security measures, such as direct buyer-to-vendor payments, multi-signatures for cryptocurrency transactions, encrypted messaging, and a ban on JavaScript.

The report also reveals the changing market trends for cybercrime products and services since 2015. Commoditization has driven prices down for many items. For example, crypting services fell from US$1,000 to just $20 per month, while the price of generic botnets dropped from $200 to $5 per day. Pricing for other items, including ransomware, Remote Access Trojans (RATs), online account credentials and spam services, remained stable, which indicates continued demand.

However, Trend Micro Research has seen high demand for other services, such as IoT botnets, with new undetected malware variants selling for as much as $5,000. Also popular are fake news and cyber-propaganda services, with voter databases selling for hundreds of dollars, and gaming accounts for games like Fortnite can fetch around $1,000 on average.

Other notable findings include the emergence of markets for:

  • Deepfake services for sextortion or to bypass photo verification requirements on some sites.

  • AI-based gambling bots designed to predict dice roll patterns and crack complex Roblox CAPTCHA.

  • Access-as-a-Service to hacked devices and corporate networks. Prices for Fortune 500 companies can reach up to US$10,000 and some services include access with read and write privileges.

  • Wearable device accounts where access could enable cybercriminals to run warranty scams by requesting replacement devices.

Trends in underground marketplaces will likely shift further in the months following the global COVID-19 pandemic, as attack opportunities continue to evolve. To protect against the ever-changing threat landscape, Trend Micro recommends a multi-layered defense approach to protect against the latest threats and mitigate corporate security risk.

“We are excited for the opportunities that will come from being part of the leading cloud security provider – amplifying what we do best, while allowing our offerings to expand in ways we couldn’t have done on our own,” said Michael Watts, chief executive officer of Cloud Conformity. “We think customers will love this simplified approach to security and compliance across their entire cloud environment, including AWS, Azure and Google Cloud – providing security guardrails to let them go faster and do more.”

Trend Micro is making the Cloud Conformity solution immediately available. For more information, please visit: http://trendmicro.com/cloudconformity.

IoT is a Hot Topic in Cybercriminal Underground - Trend Micro Survey

Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, today released new research detailing a fast-growing market for IoT attacks. Cybercriminals from around the world are actively discussing how to compromise connected devices, and how to leverage these devices for moneymaking schemes.

Trend Micro Research analyzed forums in the Russian, Portuguese, English, Arabic, and Spanish language-based underground markets to determine how cybercriminals are abusing and monetizing connected devices. The results reveal that the most advanced criminal markets are Russian- and Portuguese-speaking forums, in which financially driven attacks are most prominent. In these forums, cybercriminal activity is focused on selling access to compromised devices – mainly routers, webcams and printers – so they can be leveraged for attacks.

“We’ve lifted the lid on the IoT threat landscape to find that cybercriminals are well on their way to creating a thriving marketplace for certain IoT-based attacks and services,” said Steve Quane, executive vice president of network defense and hybrid cloud security for Trend Micro. “Criminals follow the money – always. The IoT market will continue to grow, especially with landscape changes like 5G. While IoT attacks are still in their infancy, we also found criminals discussing how to leverage industrial equipment for the same gain. Enterprises must be ready to protect their Industry 4.0 environments.”

According to Trend Micro’s findings, most conversations and active monetization schemes are focused on consumer devices. However, discussions on how to discover and compromise connected industrial machinery are also occurring, especially the vital programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used to control large-scale manufacturing equipment. The most likely business plan to monetize attacks against these industrial devices involves digital extortion attacks that threaten production downtime.

Additionally, the report predicts an increase in IoT attack toolkits targeting a broader range of consumer devices, such as virtual reality devices. The opportunities for attackers will also multiply as more devices are connected to the internet, driven by 5G implementations.

Trend Micro urges manufacturers to partner with IoT security experts to mitigate cyber-related risks from the design phase. End users and integrators should also gain visibility and control over connected devices to be aware of and curb their cyber risk.
