Haryana Becomes The 1st State to Adopt Tablet-based Personalized and Adaptive Learning

Haryana Becomes the First State to Adopt Tablet-based Personalized and Adaptive Learning

The tablets will be rolled out to 5 lakh government school students in grades 10 – 12, backed 2GB free data per day

The program aims to bridge the gap between Government schools and private edtech players or schools, by mitigating the learning losses incurred due to COVID-19 and achieving higher learning level outcomes

The state Government of Haryana has announced the commencement of personalized and adaptive learning (PAL) enabled tablet based learning program to ensure Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL). The program will be rolled out for all 5 lakh government school students in the state, in grades 10 – 12, via a library-based model. With this pioneering initiative, Haryana aims to mitigate the learning losses incurred due to COVID-19 and achieve higher learning level outcomes.

According to an ASER survey conducted last year, nearly half (47%) of the students who did not have access to learning materials cited a lack of gadgets as a reason, while 10% cited a lack of internet. Due to working hours, digital devices owned by parents could not replace school-based learning time. On the back of these data and on ground feedback, offering device access was identified as the core solution to cope with this conundrum.

The integration of the personalized and adaptive learning (PAL) software will support classroom teaching by enabling an adaptive practice and personalized remedial learning for students. The selection of the edtech partner was comprehensively implemented via evaluation based on IIT Bombay's Tulna framework and a four-week proof of concept and a thorough pilot program in government schools followed by a tender.

Commenting on the initiative, Gaurav Goel, Founder and CEO, Samagra, a mission-driven governance consulting firm said, “This is a pioneering step by the state. The pandemic-led disruption observed over the last two-years, led to a deficit in the in-person teaching model. While the Haryana Government took the lead in deploying technology to sustain the quality of education, this move will go a long way in improving access to devices to facilitate online learning. Based on parameters like device mobility, user interface, tablets were identified as the appropriate device for student learning.” Samsung, Airtel and Jio have partnered with the state for this initiative.

The tablets provided, will be backed by appropriate data connectivity. Students can access the service without having to pay for any additional fees. With this initiative the Haryana Government aims to bridge the gap between Government schools and private ed-tech players or schools. The Government has also enabled a mobile device management solution which ensures appropriate utility and no misuse of the devices.

"Besides device access, the State also recognized that there is a fundamental issue in student learning since all students are at varied learning levels and have different pace of learning. Hence, the State is also investing in the procurement and distribution of personalized and adaptive learning (PAL) enabled tablets. This program is projected to create a significant new-age seamless blend of in-school and at-home learning experience in the AY 2022 – 2023," Gaurav added.

Samagra has been working with the Government of Haryana since 2017 to improve the quality of education in the state’s 14,000+ government schools.

About Gaurav Goel

Gaurav Goel is the Founder & CEO of Samagra. Gaurav holds a dual degree in Computer Science & Engineering from IIT Delhi and an MBA from IIM Calcutta. After graduating from IIM Calcutta, he joined McKinsey & Company as a Management Consultant where he worked across sectors and geographies, solving diverse corporate problem statements. While he was enjoying his stint at McKinsey, he knew that eventually he wanted to use his skills towards improving the lives of citizens by engaging with the governance process. In 2012, he set up Samagra so that he could translate his passion into reality and create impact at scale.

About Samagra

Samagra works with the bureaucratic leadership of states across domains to solve complex governance problems at scale. So far, Samagra has worked with 7 state governments, in addition to the Government of India, on 15+ large scale systemic transformation programs across domains such as education, employment, agriculture, health, public service delivery, and skilling.

The firm’s programs are long-term systemic transformations, rather than point interventions, and therefore the first wave of a program is typically 2- 3 years long, and increases in duration as the scope increases. Samagra has developed a unique, indigenous consulting approach which combines top-down management consulting for problem structuring with a bottom-up understanding of how governance works on the ground for solution design. Isn't the time of multifunctional devices. The customer nowadays wants something more and the plus side is, that the device makers are ready to go all the way and provide the customers with what they want. A perfect example of this trend is Canonical manufactured world's first Ubuntu tablet, the Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition.

The 10-inch tablet runs on the same core operating system as the Ubuntu Phone but the user experience dynamically adapts based on input and the screen size being used by the user. This means, the device is able to double up both as a tablet and a full on Ubuntu desktop.

The device's stunning specifications have the capability to bowl any geeky techie's mind over. The device's gorgeous 10.1-inch IPS inch IPS touch display is powered by a full HD 1920×1200 pixel resolution at 240 ppi. Further, its Inside has a 64-bit MediaTek MT8163A 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal memory to make it a desire for ever tech enthusiast. In order to increase the storage expansion to up to 64GB, the device comes with a micro SD memory card.

This is not all, the device also comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and dual LED flash, which is capable of recording in full 1080p. Further, it also has a 3-megapixel front facing camera for selfies, video chats and vlogs.

For an astounding sound experience, the device comes with front facing Dolby Atmos speakers. Further, the M10 at 246mm x 171mm x 8.2mm, weighs just 470 grams and is lighter than the Apple iPad Air. Yes, you read it right. In addition to this, its 7280 mAh battery makes sure that people are able to make use of it for 10 hours without any hassle.

The firsts for M10 doesn't just stop with its unique slate form factor. It also has the honour of being the first device to deliver on Canonical’s vision of the future of computing: convergence.

According to Canonical, idea behind convergence is, that one doesn't need to distinct, separate devices, each running their own apps and operating system - as one only need one brain to do various functions, similarly one needs only one OS.

Organisations who want to take a tight control over their own systems and avoid any third party access, Ubuntu is the device they were looking for so long.

The M10 Ubuntu tablet global sale can be expected to begin in March. For people wanting to buying the device, they may have to shell up to €250, which we think for such a device is not that bad a deal.

While you're watching iPhone, Dell launched thinnest tablet in the world

dell_venue 8_series_tablet

On September 9th the whole world was hooked up to their television, smartphone and tablet screens to watch the LIVE unveiling of iPhone 6 and the Apple Watch. The craze was such that the whole world almost didn’t care what else was happening in the world of technology and due to that they ended up missing Dell’s latest innovation. Dell on Tuesday introduced a new Android Tablet at Intel 2014 Developers Conference in San Francisco. The device was introduced to the world by Michael Dell himself.

The new Dell Venue 8 7000 Series Android Tablet with Intel® RealSense™ snapshot is the world's thinnest tablet measuring only 6mm in thickness and will be available in time for the holiday season. Intel RealSense snapshot is an enhanced photography solution that creates a high-definition depth map to enable measurement, refocus and selective filters with a touch of a finger. It will introduce new capabilities and new ways of using the tablet, opening up a new creative horizon for developers to come up with apps that change how consumers engage with their photos.

The tablet comes with a very attractive 8.4 inch screen. Its 2560x1600 OLED panel display will take you away to another world altogether. The glass of the tablet stretches beautifully from edge to edge and there’s almost no bezel to block the user's view.  The tablet just has a single grip on the left which has two of the tablet’s four camera and speakers.

Consumer using the tablet can change the focus of a photo to different objects or foregrounds in editing. Objects within the photo can also be measured. The Android-based tablet is powered by the Intel Atom Z3500 processor series.

This Dell tablet also has the advantage of being the very first tablet having Intel's RealSense. Intel for long had been meticulously working towards miniaturizing 3D camera. Through this, Intel wants to turn every laptop into a Kinect. The tablet has the RealSense module not facing to the user, in fact it is positioned next to another rear mounted 8 MP camera which is used by the user to click pictures. The extra cameras on the tablet give the user an understating about how far the objects are in their photos and allow them to make the changes accordingly.

The software can also be used to find out the distance between two points in a photograph, it does so by using three cameras of the tablet. Intel's CEO jokingly added that from now on there will no longer be any question about how big a fish you caught.

The tablet is called Dell Venue 87840 and has dethroned Xperia Z2 slate for being the thinnest tablet the world has ever witnessed. The tablet is just 6mm thick and its uber cool gunmetal- grey aluminum chassis makes it a deal not to be missed.

The Dell Venue 87840 runs Android 4.4 on a quad core 2.33 GHz Intel Atom Z3580 processor. The tablet has storage of 32 GB and comes with Wi-Fi connectivity. No details were revealed about the tablet’s price and availability.

Intel to Launch Rs.10K tablets in India

intel-tablet-india

Intel is all set to launch tablets starting from Rs. 10,000 in India. These tablets will be based on Intel’s chipsets. The US based company is currently working hard with original equipment manufacturers (OEM) to bring the products to the Indian market. India is considered as the fastest growing mobile device market in the world.

There is a lot of traction in the 7 to 9 inch screen size and 2-in-1 spaces in India according to the company. Anything which falls under the 7 inches screen space size is clubbed under the Smartphone category.

According to Anand Ramamoorthy, who is the Intel South Asia Director for consumption sales, there are more than 200 million middle-class potential customers for different screen sizes across different price points in India alone.

According to the US chipmaker, India has a tablet demand of about 18 % of the Japan and Asia Pacific demand for 2014. The company forecasted that Australia, Indonesia, India and Japan will together amount to about 59 % of the total demand of tablets in the world. The company also predicted that, the yearly demand of tablets is all set to go up by 32 percent in Japan and Asia Pacific in 2014.

The OEM tie-ups that the company has with Lenovo, Acer, HP, ASUS, ECS and Dell are all geared up to unveil a number of hybrid devices and tablets soon in the market. The company thinks that tablets and hybrid devices will play an important role in its growth in India.

The demand for hybrid devices or 2 in 1s is increasing in India like never before and various OEMs are already on the job of catering to this demand by creating a new range of such devices. They are working hard to give the customers a choice which combines the consumption capability of a tablet and creation capability of a laptop or notebook into one device. Intel is all ready to target the enterprise segment also with its new range of products.

These new devices by Intel made for the Indian market will be based on the company’s Bay Trail quad-core system on chipset. According to Intel, Bay Trail is the most powerful processor available in the market currently for hybrid devices and tablets.

PaperTab - A Flexible Tablet Just like Sheet of Paper

PaperTab

Apple has been beaten up this time with way more futuristic technology developed collaboratively by Intel, Plastic Logic and Human Media Lab (HML) at Queen’s University. It's called PaperTab - a flexible paper tablet computer that looks and feels just like a sheet of paper.

PaperTab is fully interactive with a flexible, high-resolution 10.7" plastic display developed by Plastic Logic, a flexible touchscreen, and powered by the second generation Intel i5 Processor.

PaperTab acts just like paper book but with high-end technology is more than just paper and even more good than a tablet moreover its lightweight, robust and can easily be flipped, tossed around like a book or magazine. By bending one side of the display, users can also navigate through pages like a book or magazine, unlike to today's tablet where one needs to press a button.

papertab_2

PaperTab’s intuitive interface allows a user to send a photo simply by tapping one PaperTab showing a draft email with another one showing the photo. The photo is then automatically attached to the draft email. The email is sent either by placing the PaperTab in an out tray, or by bending the top corner of the display.

PaperTab can file and display thousands of paper documents, replacing the need for a computer monitor and stacks of papers or printouts. Unlike traditional tablets, PaperTabs keep track of their location relative to each other, and the user, providing a seamless experience across all apps, as if they were physical computer windows. For example, when a PaperTab is placed outside of reaching distance it reverts to a thumbnail overview of a document, just like icons on a computer desktop. When picked up or touched a PaperTab switches back to a full screen page view, just like opening a window on a computer.

In this year on January 8 Plastic Logic and the Queen’s University’s Human Media Lab already showcased the PaperTab to the press at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2013), Las Vegas. The cost and launch time is still not revealed.
