Paperfold is a foldable and shape changing smartphone

Earlier, exactly a year back we published story of PaperTab, a tablet built by Plastic Logic and Human Media Lab (HML) at Queen’s University, PaperTab is roughly a flexible paper tablet computer that looks and feels just like a sheet of paper.

This just after one year, Queen’s University's Human Media Lab has unveiled a next-gen technology of smartphone called - PaperFold, a revolutionary foldable smartphone. The shape-changing smartphone allows users to fold open up to three flexible electrophoretic displays to provide extra screen real estate when needed. Displays are detachable such that users can fold the device into various shapes that can range from an ultra notebook shape to a foldout map.

"In PaperFold, each display tile can act independently or as part of a single system,” says Dr. Vertegaal, a professor in the School of Computing and Director of the Human Media Lab at Queen’s. “It allows multiple device form factors, providing support for mobile tasks that require large screen real estate or keyboards on demand, while retaining an ultra-compact, ultra-thin and lightweight form factor."

PaperFold automatically recognizes its shape and changes its graphics to provide different functionality upon shape changes. For example, folding the device into an ultra notebook form factor opens up a keyboard on the bottom screen. Users could use this form factor to type a search, e.g., for an address on Google Maps – displayed on the top screen.

  • By flattening PaperFold’s 3 displays, the user changes views to a Google map that spans all screens.

  • Shaping PaperFold into a convex globe shows the map in Google Earth view.

  • Folding PaperFold into the shape of a 3D building on the map will pick up a Google SketchUp model of the building and turn the device into an architectural model that can be 3D printed.





No information has been as when PaperFold will be available to market, it shows how this future technology will look like and soon will in consumers' hands.

Inspiration for PaperFold came from its namesake: paper. Typically, mobile devices require scrolling or zooming in order to see different parts of a document whereas paper can be folded, detached or combined allowing it to be accessed in multiple parallel forms.

"The development of electronic paper computers that can adopt similar qualities to paper has been an enduring research goal for our team," says Dr. Vertegaal. "Books use folding as both a navigational and space saving technique, and paper maps have malleable display sizes. The PaperFold smartphone adopts folding techniques that makes paper so versatile, and employs them to change views or functionality of a smartphone, as well as alter its screen real estate in a flexible manner. PaperFold demonstrates how form could equal function in malleable mobile devices."

PaperTab - A Flexible Tablet Just like Sheet of Paper

Apple has been beaten up this time with way more futuristic technology developed collaboratively by Intel, Plastic Logic and Human Media Lab (HML) at Queen’s University. It's called PaperTab - a flexible paper tablet computer that looks and feels just like a sheet of paper.

PaperTab is fully interactive with a flexible, high-resolution 10.7" plastic display developed by Plastic Logic, a flexible touchscreen, and powered by the second generation Intel i5 Processor.

PaperTab acts just like paper book but with high-end technology is more than just paper and even more good than a tablet moreover its lightweight, robust and can easily be flipped,tossed around like a book or magazine. By bending one side of the display, users can also navigate through pages like a book or magazine, unlike to today's tablet where one needs to press a button.

PaperTab’s intuitive interface allows a user to send a photo simply by tapping one PaperTab showing a draft email with another one showing the photo. The photo is then automatically attached to the draft email. The email is sent either by placing the PaperTab in an out tray, or by bending the top corner of the display.

PaperTab can file and display thousands of paper documents, replacing the need for a computer monitor and stacks of papers or printouts. Unlike traditional tablets, PaperTabs keep track of their location relative to each other, and the user, providing a seamless experience across all apps, as if they were physical computer windows. For example, when a PaperTab is placed outside of reaching distance it reverts to a thumbnail overview of a document, just like icons on a computer desktop. When picked up or touched a PaperTab switches back to a full screen page view, just like opening a window on a computer.

In this year on January 8 Plastic Logic and the Queen’s University’s Human Media Lab already showcased the PaperTab to the press at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2013), Las Vegas. The cost and launch time is still not revealed.
