NTT Creates A Tech That Detects Corrosion of Steel Materials From Images Taken From Digital Camera

Many steel structures such as bridges, steel towers and guardrails exist across the world, and the aging of these infrastructure facilities is a major social problem. The main cause of deterioration of these facilities is corrosion of steel. Corrosion in the equipment causes the steel to lose its cross section as it progresses, and the durability and load resistance of the equipment gradually deteriorate, which may eventually lead to damage or collapse. Therefore, it is important for the facility manager or authorities to inspect the deterioration condition to properly diagnose the remaining durability and load-bearing capacity.

In a latest, there is a significant advancement in infrastructure maintenance technology. The NTT Corporation has developed an image recognition technology that can automatically detect corrosion on steel materials from images and estimate the depth of corrosion with an accuracy of 0.44 mm. This technology enables a highly accurate diagnosis of the durability and load-bearing capacity of infrastructure, leading to reduced maintenance costs and more timely repairs.

It's expected to be implemented in NTT Group companies by the end of FY2024 and will be showcased at the Tsukuba Forum 2024, scheduled for May 16-17, 2024. This innovation could greatly contribute to the sustainability of infrastructure by extending the life of facilities and ensuring safety through early detection and repair of potential issues. It's a great example of how technology can be used to solve real-world problems and improve efficiency.

How does the image recognition work?

The image recognition technology developed by NTT Corporation works by using a digital camera to take images of infrastructure facilities. It then automatically detects areas of corrosion on steel materials within these images. The technology is capable of estimating the depth of corrosion with an accuracy of 0.44 mm.

Here's a simplified explanation of how it might work:

1. Image Capture: A digital camera captures images of the infrastructure, such as bridges, steel towers, and guardrails.

2. Corrosion Detection: The image recognition system scans the images for signs of corrosion, which could include changes in color, texture, or shape compared to non-corroded areas.

3. Depth Estimation: Using advanced algorithms, the system estimates the amount of steel that has been lost due to corrosion, which is indicative of the depth of the corrosion.

4. Diagnosis: The remaining thickness of the steel material is measured, allowing for a highly accurate assessment of the equipment's durability and load-bearing capacity.

This technology helps in timely repairs and maintenance, ensuring the safety and longevity of infrastructure facilities. It's scheduled to be put into practical use at NTT Group companies by the end of FY2024 and will be showcased at the Tsukuba Forum 2024.

Infrastructure Facilities that can Benefit from this Technology

The technology developed by NTT Corporation for detecting and estimating the depth of corrosion on steel materials can benefit a wide range of infrastructure facilities. These include:

Bridges: Ensuring the safety and longevity of bridges, which are critical for transportation.

Steel Towers: Maintaining the structural integrity of towers that support various utilities.

Guardrails: Assessing the condition of guardrails that protect motorists on roads and highways.

Steel Pipelines: Monitoring pipelines that transport water, gas, and oil to detect leaks or weaknesses.

This technology is particularly useful for aging infrastructure, where corrosion can lead to deterioration and potential failure. By providing a high-precision diagnosis of equipment durability and load-bearing capacity, it allows for timely repairs and maintenance, ensuring the safety and extending the life of these facilities. It's a proactive approach to infrastructure management that can lead to significant cost savings and improved public safety.

Global Adoption

There are indeed plans for the international adoption of NTT Corporation's corrosion detection technology. The technology has significant potential to benefit infrastructure maintenance worldwide. While the specific details of international expansion have not been disclosed, the technology's showcase at the Tsukuba Forum 2024 indicates a move towards broader awareness and potential global partnerships.

The global market for corrosion inhibitors is projected to reach USD 11.33 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 4.7% from 2023-2030. This suggests a strong interest and need for corrosion prevention technologies across various industries, which could drive the adoption of NTT's technology in international markets.

The accurate detection and diagnosis of corrosion in steel infrastructure can help prevent catastrophic failures, reduce maintenance costs, and optimize resource allocation, making it an attractive solution for countries looking to improve their infrastructure management. As such, it's reasonable to expect that NTT Corporation will seek partnerships and opportunities to implement this technology in other countries following its initial rollout in Japan.

Realize LLM-based visual machine reading comprehension technology

Towards "tsuzumi" that can read and understand visual documents

NTT Corporation has made significant progress in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) with their LLM-based visual machine reading comprehension technology. This breakthrough aims to enable AI systems to answer a wide range of questions based on document images, which is crucial for digital transformation (DX).

Real-world documents often contain both text and visual elements (such as icons, diagrams, etc.). However, existing AI models, including large language models (LLMs), primarily focus on understanding text information.

To address this limitation, NTT proposed Visual Machine Reading Comprehension Technology. The goal was to create an AI system that can read and understand visual documents/ information, similar to how humans do.

Comparison of Text-based and Visual Machine Reading Comprehension.
Comparison of Text-based and Visual Machine Reading Comprehension.

Previous visual machine reading comprehension techniques struggled with arbitrary tasks, such as information extraction from invoices. Achieving high performance without extensive training data was challenging.

NTT aimed to develop a visual machine reading comprehension model with high instruction-following ability, akin to LLMs.

NTT successfully developed a new visual machine reading comprehension technology that leverages the reasoning ability of LLMs.

The model visually understands documents by analyzing both text and visual information. It can answer complex questions involving diagrams, such as understanding pie charts or other visual representations.

The research results were presented at the 38th Annual AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence and received the Outstanding Paper Award at the 30th Annual Conference of the Association for Natural Language Processing.

Notably, this paper is the first to propose a specific methodology for LLM-based visual document understanding.

Tsuzumi

NTT's large language model, called 'Tsuzumi' plays a central role in this technology. Tsuzumi is designed to address the energy consumption challenges associated with large-scale LLMs. It aims to reduce learning and inference costs while maintaining high performance.

The name "Tsuzumi" symbolizes the start of a Gagaku (ancient Japanese court music and dance) ensemble, emphasizing its role in driving industrial development.

Technology

NTT's visual machine reading comprehension technology visually understands documents by utilizing the high reasoning ability of LLMs (Figure below). To achieve this goal, (1) NTT researchers developed a new adapter technology5 that can convert document images into LLM's representations, and (2) constructed the first large-scale visual instruction tuning datasets for diverse visual document understanding tasks. These enable LLMs to understand the content of documents by combining vision and language information and to perform arbitrary tasks without additional training.

LLMs with NTT's technology can be used for office works and daily life situations that require human cognition tasks, such as searching and screening documents, and assisting in reading specialized literature.

In a conclusion, NTT's breakthrough in LLM-based visual machine reading comprehension technology brings us closer to AI systems capable of understanding and answering questions based on visual documents—a critical step in the digital transformation journey.

This result is the outcome of joint research with Professor Jun Suzuki in Center for Data-driven Science and Artificial Intelligence Tohoku University in FY2023.

This technology will contribute to the development of important industrial services such as web search and question answering based on real-world visual documents. We aim to establish the technology to realize AI that creates new values by collaborating with humans, including work automation.

NTT Com’s Prototype Platform Securely Shares CO2 Emissions-related Data from Switzerland to Sites in Germany and Japan

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the ICT solutions and international communications business within the NTT Group, announced today that it has succeeded in a trial sharing of production-line data related to CO2 emissions via a prototype platform that enables interconnection via IDS standards which support data sovereignty in GAIA-X data ecosystem. The trial data, which normally would not be available for sharing due to its high confidentiality even though partners engaged in actual business would need to perform CO2 emissions calculations, was transmitted securely to designated sites in Germany and Japan from Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne in Switzerland.

GAIA-X is an initiative announced by the German and French governments in October 2019 to support data sharing via infrastructure that ensures data protection, transparency, reliability and interoperability to protect the rights of European companies, governments, institutions and citizens.

NTT Com conducted the trial under the assumption that such data will be used by companies engaged in actual business to review their manufacturing methods to achieve greater decarbonization. The prototype platform, which enables interconnection with IDS Connectors, also is equipped with DATA Trust®, a mechanism for the secure sharing of highly confidential data.

The trial involved the sharing of electricity-consumption data that business partners typically would use to calculate CO2 emissions generated during the manufacturing of specific products. The trial confirmed that NTT’s platform can share such data securely with only those parties permitted by law or contract.

The prototype was developed using Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (Software Innovation Center)'s business-to-business data distribution technology, in cooperation with Robot Revolution & Industrial IoT Initiative (RRI), International Data Spaces Association (IDSA), Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne and Japan Innovation Park.

NTT Com plans to exhibit the trial results at the joint booth of IDSA and RRI during the Hannover Messe industrial fair in Germany from April 12-16.

“Japan is very close to Europe in the field of industry, with a strong experience in automotive, steel, or manufacturing,” said Hubert Tardieu, Chairman of GAIA-X AISBL. “The main objective in every industry is nowadays data sharing and service orchestration like in GAIA-X. NTT Communications starts with a first run in data sharing between, Japan, Germany and Switzerland, using the IDS standard which supports data sovereignty in GAIA-X data ecosystems. We are proud at GAIA-X AISBL to strongly support the launching of the japan Hub trough NTT Communications and start more use cases around GAIA-X.”

Going forward, NTT Com will build a test environment in Japan to connect with GAIA-X and start interoperability tests with multiple partner companies around the world this summer. If all goes well, NTT Com hopes to launch an official platform within the fiscal year ending in March 2022. The launch would be coordinated with organizations and groups involved with international data distribution, including Data Society Alliance, OPC Foundation Japan, RRI, GAIA-X AISBL and IDSA.

Data utilization has become indispensable for initiatives such as global decarbonization, the early achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the strengthening of industries. At the same time, however, legal systems and technologies to regulate and manage data use are being developed around the world, one of which is GAIA-X, to prevent the leakage of corporate and national secrets and to protect data sovereignty.

In the future, it is expected that companies will be required to use GAIA-X to send and receive highly confidential data to and from business partners in European countries. This means that companies unable to use GAIA-X would not be able to do business with European partners if sensitive data sharing were involved. NTT Com’s envisioned platform, however, would enable such companies to easily connect to GAIA-X without have to spend valuable time and money on an acceptable data-sharing solution.
