Gartner Predicts that GenAI will Support 25% of Logistics Key Performance Indicator Reporting by 2028

Gartner Predicts that GenAI will Support 25% of Logistics Key Performance Indicator Reporting by 2028
GenAI will Enable Logistics Leaders to Derive Quicker Value from Additional Data Sources, Aiding Logistics Operations

By 2028, 25% of all logistics key performance indicator (KPI) reporting will be powered by generative AI (GenAI), according to Gartner, Inc.

“GenAI presents an opportunity for logistics leaders to uncover additional insights from logistics data and drive operational efficiency,” said Carly West, Senior Director Analyst in Gartner’s Supply Chain practice. “KPI reporting is a challenging area for many organizations, and it is ripe for exploration with GenAI to uncover valuable findings from logistics data at a greater speed.”

According to a Gartner survey of 127 supply chain leaders, conducted in November 2023, the shift towards leveraging GenAI in supply chain and logistics is underway with half of leaders surveyed planning to implement GenAI in the next 12 months, with an additional 14% already in the implementation stage.

KPI reporting helps logistics leaders track operational performance against targets and make future projections. Many companies, however, struggle to efficiently gain insights, often overlooking difficult to access data sources and spending vast amounts of time manually reviewing documents, correspondence and transcripts.

GenAI’s ability to use natural language processing to query and display KPIs enables logistics leaders to quickly summarize multiple data sources to draft scorecards, while also enabling prompts to present and explain results, conduct root cause analysis and analyze supplier data to evaluate performance.

“The ability to gather and consolidate different data sources will remove obstacles that logistics leaders currently run into,” added West. “Moreover, the ability to understand where challenges are occurring in real time will enable faster corrective action to improve logistics performance, in turn driving operational and financial results.”

Understanding Organizational Readiness and Demonstrating Value

As logistics leaders consider where GenAI can support KPI reporting, it will be critical to assess their organization’s level of maturity, culture, internal capability and data and talent availability prior to implementation.

“As with any new technology, evaluating your organization’s readiness prior to beginning implementation is key,” said Jose Reyes, Senior Director Analyst in Gartner’s Supply Chain practice. “Reviewing your existing technology stack and establishing the right KPIs before exploring how GenAI can help is important for maximizing value.”

It’s also important to consider how and when logistics leaders will demonstrate value to leadership. Taking advantage of KPI reporting through embedded options in solutions or technology already used by the organization will drive quicker wins. As GenAI matures, logistics leaders may be able to build these models on top of their internal datasets, making queries for KPI metrics and reporting easier and more robust and accurate.

Netskope Scores No. 1 and No. 2 for All Use Cases in 2023 Gartner® Critical Capabilities for Security Service Edge Report

Users Looking for a Comprehensive SSE Solution Should Consider Netskope

Netskope, a leader in Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), scored highest or among the top two solutions cited in all Use Cases identified in the 2023 Gartner Critical Capabilities for Security Service Edge (SSE) report. In addition, Netskope is the only vendor named a Leader in the recently released 2023 Gartner Magic Quadrant™ for Security Service Edge that also ranked among the highest three scoring vendors for all four Use Cases in the 2023 Critical Capabilities for SSE.

In the Critical Capabilities report, Gartner evaluated the SSE offerings of 10 vendors and their ability to provide a broad set of features required to achieve SSE. Key Use Cases include:
  • Identify and Protect Sensitive Information
  • Secure Web and Cloud Usage
  • Detect and Mitigate Threats
  • Connect and Secure Remote Workers
Netskope received the highest scores among all vendors in two of four Use Cases—the Connect and Secure Remote Workers Use Case and the Identify and Protect Sensitive Information Use Case.

“As customers select SSE vendors, they should be confident with the knowledge that those vendors aren’t lagging in any key use cases,” said Jason Clark, Chief Strategy Officer, Netskope. “We are proud that Netskope has been recognized as a high-scoring vendor in the Critical Capabilities report, and is the only Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for SSE that was also ranked in the top three of any and all of the Critical Capabilities Use Cases.”

The Critical Capabilities report also identifies several important trends for organizations building SSE and SASE capabilities, including the following, which are noted by Gartner as strategic planning assumptions:

By 2025, 70% of organizations that implement agent-based zero trust network access (ZTNA) will choose either a SASE or SSE provider for ZTNA, rather than a stand-alone offering

By 2026, 85% of organizations seeking to procure cloud access security broker (CASB), secure web gateway (SWG) or ZTNA access offerings will obtain these from a converged solution

By 2026, 45% of organizations will prioritize advanced data security features for inspection of data at rest and in motion as a selection criterion for SSE

Worldwide Server Revenue Grew 5.1% in Q4 of 2019: Gartner

The worldwide server market continued to grow in the fourth quarter of 2019 as revenue
increased 5.1 per cent and shipments grew 11.7 per cent year over year, according to Gartner, Inc.

In all of 2019, worldwide server shipments declined 3.1 per cent and server revenue declined 2.5 per cent compared with full-year 2018, the research firm said.

"The market returned to growth with a very strong fourth quarter result, largely driven by a return of demand from hyper scalers," said Adrian OConnell, senior research director at Gartner, said in a statement.

"However, the outlook for the worldwide server market in 2020 is subject to great uncertainty. The impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak is expected to temper forecast growth. Although demand from the hyperscale segment is expected to continue through the first half of the year, other
buying organisations' reactions will vary," he said.

The India server market saw an increase in demand of unit shipments in the fourth quarter of 2019 by 14.7 per cent, but the revenues declined by 13.2 per cent year over year.

Server shipments in India grew by 4.8 per cent in 2019 while server revenue declined 8.7 per cent.

HPE secured the top spot in India server market based on revenue in the fourth quarter of 2019 with 37.4 per cent market share, according to Gartner. Dell EMC secured 26.6 per cent market share, followed by Lenovo with 16.6 per cent of the market. Cisco experienced the strongest growth in the quarter among the top five vendors, with revenue growing 0.8 per cent.

Dell EMC secured the top spot in the worldwide server market based on revenue in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Despite a decline of 9.9 per cent year over year, Dell EMC secured 17.3 per cent market share, followed by HewlettPackard Enterprise (HPE) with 15.4 per cent of the market.

IBM experienced the strongest growth in the quarter, growing 28.6 per cent, the statement said.

In server shipments, Dell EMC maintained the number one position in the fourth quarter of 2019 with 14.2 per cent market share.

HPE secured the second spot with 10.8 per cent of themarket.

Both Dell EMC and HPE experienced declines in server shipments, while Lenovo experienced the strongest growth with a 22.4 per cent increase in shipments in the fourth quarter of
2019.

In full year 2019, both worldwide server shipments and revenue declined, with shipments falling 3.1 per cent and revenue down 2.5 per cent.

As for vendor performance, Dell EMC took the top spot in both revenue and shipments with 20.5 per cent market share and 16.3 per cent market share, respectively.

HPE secured the number two position with market share of 17.3 per cent in revenue and 12.3 per cent in shipments.

Inspur Electronics is the only vendor in the top five that grew in both revenue and shipments in 2019, it said. PTI

Global PC shipments Grew 2.3% to 70.6 Million Units in Q4 2019: Gartner

The global PC market grew 2.3 per cent year-on-year in October-December 2019 with shipment totalling 70.6 million units, data from research firm Gartner showed.

The worldwide shipment was 69 million units in the fourth quarter of 2018, Gartner said its preliminary results for fourth quarter of 2019.

"The PC market experienced growth for the first time since 2011, driven by vibrant business demand for Windows 10 upgrades, particularly in the US, EMEA ( Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) and Japan," Gartner senior principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa said.

"We expect this growth to continue through this year even after Windows 7 support comes to an end this month, as many businesses in emerging regions such as China, Eurasia and the emerging Asia/Pacific have not yet upgraded," she added.

Contrasted against the ongoing weakness in consumer personal computers (PC) demand, business PC demand has led to unit growth in five of the last seven quarters, Kitagawa said.

"The ongoing Intel CPU shortage, which began mid-last year, became a major issue again on PC delivery to enterprise customers by the top three vendors. Without this shortage, shipments would have grown faster than the reported results," she said.

Worldwide PC shipments totalled 261.2 million units in 2019, a marginal 0.6 per cent increase from 2018.

This was the first time in seven years that the global PC market experienced growth.

Lenovo maintained its number one position in the worldwide PC market and widened its share over HP Inc. With the exception of the Asia/Pacific, Lenovo recorded year-over-year growth in all regions. In the US alone, Lenovo's desktop PC shipments rose more than 30 per cent compared to the year-ago period. PTI SID SID

90% of Current Enterprise Blockchain Implementations Require Replacement within 18 Mths

By 2021, 90% of current enterprise blockchain platform implementations will require replacement within 18 months to remain competitive, secure and avoid obsolescence, according to Gartner.

"Blockchain platforms are emerging platforms and, at this point, nearly indistinguishable in some cases from core blockchain technology,” said Adrian Lee, senior research director at Gartner. “Many CIOs overestimate the capabilities and short-term benefits of blockchain as a technology to help them achieve their business goals, thus creating unrealistic expectations when assessing offerings from blockchain platform vendors and service providers."

Today, the blockchain platform market is composed of fragmented offerings that often overlap or are being used in a complementary fashion, making technology choices confusing for IT decision makers.

“Compounding this challenge is the fact that blockchain platform vendors typically use messaging that does not link to a target buyer’s use cases and business benefits. For example, ‘transactions’ was the term mentioned the most in relation to blockchain, followed by ‘secure’ and ‘security.’ While these may be functions of blockchain-enabling technology, buyers are still confused as to how these functions are achieved or what benefits blockchain adds compared to their existing processes,” said Mr. Lee.

Nonetheless, as enterprises’ interest for blockchain technology increases, the number of blockchain platform vendors continues to increase with more new entrants. “Due to the lack of an industry consensus on product concept, feature set, core application requirements and target market, we do not expect there to be a single dominant blockchain platform within the next five years. Instead, we expect a multiplatform world to emerge,” said Mr. Lee.

By 2025, the business value added by blockchain will grow to slightly more than $176 billion, then surge to exceed $3.1 trillion by 2030, according to a recent forecast by Gartner. “Product managers should prepare for rapid evolution, early obsolescence, a shifting competitive landscape, future consolidation of offerings and the potential failure of early stage technologies/functionality in the blockchain platform market,” said Mr. Lee.

India's App Software Spending To Outpace China, Grow 20% This Year

India is set to outpace China in enterprise application software spending growth with a 19.8% rise this year, compared with 18.9% in China, says a report by Gartner.

However, it is to be noted that in absolute terms the total spending in India is projected to reach $2.5 billion, while that of China is expected to be higher at $5.1 billion, said the Gartner report.

The report further said that, India has a higher percentage of companies in all categories who want to increase spending across all enterprise applications.

Enterprise content management (ECM), business intelligence (BI), customer relationship management (CRM) and open source (enterprise edition) were the most popular in India, while open source, ECM and CRM were the most popular in China.

In India, increased software spending is being strongly influenced by overarching digital transformation, followed by mobile and artificial intelligence (AI). In China, cloud/SaaS offerings lead as the top influencer (chosen by 63 percent of respondents), followed by Internet of Things and mobile.

IoT is particularly significant in China due to the large manufacturing base, and the fact that "smart manufacturing" is an official initiative in the country's 13th Five-Year Plan. However, adoption of emerging initiatives such as IoT, AI and digital transformation will largely vary. Some end-user organizations are still piloting, experimenting with and trialing their own resources in order to implement these initiatives.

"China's and India's enterprise application software spending has grown at double-digit rates historically, and they will continue to be hot spots," said Keith Guttridge, research director, Garner.

"Despite moderate economic growth, technology and service providers (TSPs) should craft a go-to-market strategy that assumes that China and India will continue to be fast-growth markets in the region and the world," said Mr. Guttridge. "TSPs can differentiate their offerings by providing 'hand-holding' mini-consultations for key initiatives, such as IoT (especially in China), AI and digital transformation (especially in India). They can also deliver use-case scenarios that demonstrate the value of products and services to these emerging technologies."

According to Statista, the revenue of the Indian software market reached around US$5.2 billion in 2016. Until 2018, it is expected to increase to nearly 5.8 billion U.S. dollars of annual revenue. Among the global leaders of the enterprise software market are Microsoft, Oracle, and IBM.

Speaking about Startups in enterprise software sector, enterprise software start-ups are fast becoming the favourites of investors. Take Freshdesk, one of India’s most valuable enterprise start-ups, which makes customer management software. Started in 2010, it has so far raised over $90 million in venture funding from the likes of Tiger Global, Google Capital and Accel Partners.

Between January and April 2016, there were 44 investments in enterprise or business-to-business (B2B) startups, as against 71 deals in the same period of year 2017, according to IndianWeb2 calculations based on data available on the website Trak.in.

Bad News: Wearable Devices Have High Drop-out Rate, Says Gartner Report

A recent Gartner survey has found out a rather shocking fact. According to it, the current drop-out rate of smartwatches comes out at a high 29 percent, and the abandonment rate among fitness trackers is even higher at 30 percent.

The survey by Gartner's personal technologies study was taken online by a total of 9,592 respondents from the UK, the US and Australia between the period of June to August this year. The survey aimed to track the respondents true feelings/attitudes towards wearable tech, especially know about their buying behaviours when it comes to spending on fitness trackers, virtual reality glasses, and smartwatches.

According to the research firm's survey results, the drop-out rate in smartwatches stood at 29 per cent, and 30 per cent for fitness trackers because people do not find these wearables useful after buying, or they get bored of them too soon or they break in a short interval of time.

The results showed that there is an urgent need for a more a compelling value proposition of these wearables in order to drive in greater adoption.

Angela McIntyre, research director at Gartner, termed the survey results as a "serious problem" for the industry as the abandonment rate turned out be quite high relative to the usage rate.

According to McIntyre, the wearable makers can offer users a more compelling value proposition by ensuring that the uses of the wearable devices are more distinct from what smartphones typically provide. They can engage people with gamification and incentives.

The survey showed that at 10 percent, smartwatch adoption is still in its early adopter stage, while fitness trackers have managed to reach early mainstream with 19 percent adoption rate. Further, only 8 percent of the 9,592 respondents surveyed had used VR glasses/head-mounted displays.

Gartner survey results showed that that people typically bought smartwatches and fitness trackers for their own use, with 34 percent of fitness trackers and 26 percent of smartwatches were bought to be given as gifts.

The survey found that with a 12 percent usage, the US is the leading smartwatch user, the UK comes second at 9 percent and Australia stands third at 7 percent. The US also stood first at fitness tracker usage with 23 percent usage, with the UK at 15 per cent and Australia at 19 per cent.

The survey respondents felt that the wearable devices are priced too high, in comparison to their usefulness. This ends up giving wearable device providers with not so popular brand name an opportunity to provide the users with wearables that are good quality but priced significantly lower than the top brands products.

2) This Tiny WiFi Device Developed By Stanford Engineers Supplies Missing Link For the Internet of Things

Conceived by a Stanford University research team led by Sachin Katti, an associate professor of electrical engineering and of computer science, and Pengyu Zhang, a postdoctoral researcher, HitchHike is a tiny, ultra-low-energy wireless radio that promises to be the thing that the Internet of Things was looking for since long.

The 2 in 1 Hitchhike prototype is a processor and radio all in one. Although it is about the size of a regular sized postage stamp, but its engineers still feel that it can be made smaller so that it can be easily implanted in bio-devices like a wireless heart rate sensor.

HitchHike is being termed by its developers as the first and only self-sufficient WiFi system that has the power of enabling data transmission by making use of just micro-watts of energy—almost zero. Further, one of its many plus points, is that it can be used as it is with the existing WiFi without any additional equipment or any major modification.

3) Google, Microsoft and Others Create Guidelines For Improving IoT Security

Nowadays, personal computers are no more the only devices connected to the internet. A variety of devices embedded with Internet connectivity and functions have also joined the party. This very class of devices, famously known as the Internet of Things or IoT, and has ended up giving birth to a new level of security and privacy risks.

In order to curb these, the Broadband Internet Technical Advisory Group or the BITAG- an alliance formed by world technology giants Microsoft, Google, Verizon, Intel and a number of other players in the tech industry- has laid out a set of guidelines so as to improve the security on Internet of Things devices.

They are as follows:

a) IoT Devices should make use of the best current software practices. This should include a strong mechanism for secure, automated software updates.

b) IoT Devices should use strong authentication by default and not use common or easily guessable user names and passwords (e.g., “admin”, “password”).

c) IoT Devices manufacturers should follow best security and Cryptography practices by securing communications using Transport Layer Security (TLS) or Lightweight Cryptography (LWC). If devices rely on a public key infrastructure (PKI), then an authorized entity must be able to revoke certificates when they become compromised, and manufacturers should take care to avoid encryption methods, protocols, and key sizes with known weaknesses.

d) IoT Devices should be restrictive rather than permissive in communication.

e) IoT Devices should continue to function even if the internet connectivity is disrupted.

f) IoT Devices should continue to function even if the cloud back-end fails

g) IoT Devices should ship with a privacy policy that is easy to find and understand.

The report has also recommended that IoT devices manufacture should make sure that the devices are not reachable via inbound connections by default. Since BITAG is just an advisory group, it can’t legally enforce any of its recommendations on IoT device manufacturers, but can only give them crucial points to think on and act.

Mesh

In the layman terms, it can be said that mesh basically refers to a dynamic connection of processes, things, people and services that support intelligent digital ecosystems. This means, as mesh as a technology grows, the experience of the user also changes at the fundamental level, and hence, its supporting technology and security platforms and architectures should undergo a change as well.

Trend 1: Conversational Systems

These systems can go from the simple bidirectional, informal text to voice conversations such as a reply to "What day of is today?" to more difficult interactions such as collecting an oral testimony from someone involved in a criminal case. These systems have led to a model shift from people adapting to their computers in the past to the one where the computer hears and adapts to a person. Instead of just using voice/text as interface, these conversational systems allow machine and people to use a number of other modalities such as sound, sight etc. to interact across the digital device mesh such as IoT systems, sensors and appliances etc.

Trend 2: Digital Technology Platforms

It is not a secret anymore that digital technology platforms are so vital for the success of a digital business that they are often described as their building blocks. In fact, nowadays they're considered almost necessary in order to break into the digital world. Ideally, every digital business will have a mix of five digital technology platforms: business ecosystems, Information systems, the Internet of Things, customer experience, and analytics and intelligence. Till the year 2020, new services and platforms for conversational systems, IoT and AI will remain at the centerstage. There is a need for the companies to identify and evaluate how the industry platforms are evolving with time so as to effectively plan for ways to evolve their own digital platforms in order to meet the growing challenges of the digital business world.

Trend 3: Mesh App and Service Architecture (MASA)

The year 2017 would witness important changes being made to the tools, technology and architecture currently being used in the intelligent digital mesh to develop effective solutions. The MASA can be best described as a multichannel solution architecture that make use of cloud and serverless computing, microservices and containers as well as APIs and events so as to deliver dynamic, modular and flexible solutions. These solutions eventually end up supporting multiple users in multiple roles by making use of multiple devices and communicating with over multiple networks. It is important to note that MASA is still a long term architectural shift that needs substantial changes to be made to development tooling and best practices.

Trend 4: Adaptive Security Architecture

With the rapid growth of digital technology platforms, application architectures and intelligent digital mesh, there is an urgent need for security to become more fluid and easily adaptive. As we have discussed several times on IndianWeb2, security in the IoT environment posses a very difficult challenge. There is a need for security teams to work effectively with enterprise, application and solutions architects so as to tackle the important topic of security in the initial phase of the designing of the applications and IoT solutions. The year might see multilayered security and use of user and entity behaviour analytics becoming a necessity for almost every company.

Intelligent

It is safe to say that the year 2016 saw artificial intelligence and machine learning reaching a critical tipping point. From now on, they will increasingly augment and extend virtually every technology enabled application, service, or thing. Further, till the year 2020, creating intelligent systems that will have the potential to learn, adapt and even act autonomously rather than only being able to successfully execute predefined instructions will remain a primary battleground for all technology vendors all around the world.

Trend 5: Intelligent Things

Autonomous vehicles, drones and robots are three main categories into which the new intelligent things can be easily categorised into. The year ahead would witness all these three areas growing to have an impact on a larger segment of the market and extending support to a new phase of the digital business.

While in the above paragraph we talked about new intelligent things, let's also have a look at the existing things like the IoT devices. The year would see them becoming intelligent things as they will be soon be able to deliver the great power of artificial intelligence enabled systems everywhere. This includes medical facility, home, office and factory floor.

As intelligent things grow on the evolution and popularity charts, they will in all likelihood witness a shift from a stand-alone model to a collaborative model one in which intelligent things would be capable of communicating with one another and act in coherence to get tasks done. However, in certain scenarios, issues such as privacy and liability, along with the difficulty of creating highly specialised assistants might slow down embedded intelligence.

Trend 6: AI & Advanced Machine Learning

Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, which currently already includes technologies such as natural-language processing, deep learning, and neural networks, could soon encompass more advanced systems that will be able to learn, understand, predict, adapt and potentially even function autonomously. Systems could learn and change future behaviour, and end up creating more intelligent devices and programs. This new era has been unleashed by a combination of advanced algorithms, extensive parallel processing power, and massive data sets to feed the algorithms.

The banking sector could see AI and machine-learning techniques being used to model current real-time transactions, as well as predictive models of transactions based in the likelihood of them being fraudulent. Organisations which are looking to drive digital innovation with this particular trend will have to evaluate different business scenarios in which AI and machine learning will be successfully able to drive in clear and specific business value.

Trend 7: Intelligent Apps

Intelligent apps, which also include technologies such as virtual personal assistants, maybe soon be able to completely transform the workplace by making its users more effective and everyday tasks much easier than before. However, these new intelligent apps are no longer limited to just new digital assistants. The future could see almost every existing software category right from enterprise apps to security tooling getting infused with artificial intelligence enabled capabilities.

According to Gartner, technology providers will be making use of Artificial Intelligence to focus on three main areas — AI-powered and increasingly autonomous business processes, advanced analytics, and AI-powered conversational, continuous and immersive interfaces.

Gartner hopes that by the year 2018,
most of the world’s largest 200 companies will be able to effectively make use of intelligent apps and fully utilise the toolkit of big data and analytics tools so as to improve their customer experience and refine their offers.

Digital

The lines between the physical and digital world is getting thinner by the day and giving birth to a number of new opportunities for digital businesses.

Trend 8: Digital Twin

According to Gartner, in a time of another 3-5 years, the world would see about a billions of things being represented by digital twins, which is a dynamic software model of a physical system or thing. By making use of physics data on how the components of a thing are operating and responding to the environment as well as the sensors provided data in the physical world, a digital twin can be be put to evaluate and simulate real world conditions, add value, improve operations and add responds to changes. These digital twins work as proxies for the combination of traditional monitoring devices and controls and skilled individuals. In order for them to proliferate, there is a dire need for a cultural change, as those who truly understand the need of real-world things only join hands with IT professionals and data scientists.

Trend 9: Blockchain

A blockchain is basically an anonymous online ledger that makes use of a data structure to make the process of transaction an easier and simpler process. It provides users the ability to manipulate the ledger in a safe way without seeking the support of a third party.

While a bank's ledger has connections to a centralised network, a blockchain is anonymous as it helps in protecting the identities of the users. This is what makes the technology of blockchain a safer way to carry out transactions than any other existing processes.

While a number of blockchain initiatives have been launched this year, a majority of them are in their alpha or beta stages, which means the technology has significant challenges to face in the future.

Trend 10: Virtual reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)

In an interview earlier in the year, Tim Cook had said, "There's virtual reality and there's augmented reality - both of these are incredibly interesting. But my own view is that augmented reality is the larger of the two, probably by far."

VR and AR have greatly transformed the way in which individuals interact with each other and with software systems by creating an environment which is almost completely immersive. VR can be employed during remote experiences and training scenarios. AR, on the other hand, has great potential in the business world as it can be used to overlay graphics onto realworld objects. In the future, we could see VR and AR growing beyond this visual immersion so as to include all the other human senses as well.
