Fashion Discovery Platform GetNatty Raises Seed Funding; Appoints Sandeep Bhagava on the Advisory Board

Fashion focused, O2O designer brands aggregator startup and fashion discovery platform with AI enabled personal stylist, GetNatty has raised an undisclosed sum as a part of its seed round, that was led by Abhay Kumar - CMD of Grihapravesh Buildteck, Binod Choubey, Firoze Sethna and Parth Patel, all of whom are entrepreneurs turned investors.

The company has appointed media and entertainment industry veteran Sandeep Bhargava on the board of advisors who is credited to launch the motion picture business of the Network 18 group in India, and within a year he had listed the company on the AIM exchange in London and raised a film fund of USD 110 Million.

An Artificial Intelligence Enabled 'Sari' Created By Fashion Designer Gaurav Gupta and IBM

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is climbing up the tech popularity ladder like nothing before. From aviation to writing to shopping, AI is slowly but steadily entering various verticals of our lives. And now, IBM and Vogue have together made something that marks the perfect marriage of Indian fashion and AI.

This year, Vogue decided to host its first ever Vogue Women of the Year Awards to celebrate trailblazing men and women across the globe. In order to celebrate the special occasion, the firm decided to get IBM’s cognitive system, Watson, together with fashion world biggie Gaurav Gupta to create world’s first ever artificial intelligence-inspired sari-gown, which was worn by the award’s emcee and Emmy Award-winning actress Archie Panjabi last night.

For the uninitiated, this isn’t the first time that IBM Watson has done something like this with fashion. The platform had earlier collected worldwide recognition for co-creating Karolina Kurkova’s top rated Met Gala dress with the Marchesa duo. This time, the task on the hand was to search for dominant patterns and colours from the regions that all the awardees come from. In order to make this AI sari-gown a reality, hashtags of several regions and over five million images were scoured. Findability Sciences, which is an IBM ecosystem partner, was then assigned the task of extracting from those photographs specific context around shapes, patterns and colours that were most popular. The findings were then shared with Gupta to work on.



Gupta used a custom-built IBM application that the company infused with its Watson technology to feed in his inspiration behind the AI masterpiece. The tool helped with machine-generated patterns that Watson’s AI engine created as well as dominant human-created patterns from its database. All this finally led to the creation of a first-of-its-kind AI sari-gown with hybrid replete with LED lights.

Being powered by IBM IoT, the sari’s LED lights changes its colour based on each of the award winner’s personality. In order to make this a possibility, IBM made used of Watson’s Personality Insights API to carry out an extensive investigation of each awardee through their social media handles. The information derived from it was then mapped against seven human traits – open-mindedness and originality, confidence and problem solving, effectiveness in organizing thoughts, action orientation, conscientiousness, social energy, and openness to possibilities and alternatives. The aforementioned traits were then mapped to a colour most associated with them.

Each of the awardee was also given a specially designed scroll, which had all the personality traits of the person as analyzed by IBM Watson.

Not only this, the guests attending the event also got a chance to be the part of the AI experience. Gupta and IBM Watson’s master AI creation were also used as an interactive art installation at the award ceremony. Attendees could find the colour that best described them by simply entering their Twitter handle or choosing one from the pre-populated list of famous Indian women.

It’s great to see Vogue recognising the power of women and celebrating their achievements by holding a special award ceremony. We hope that Vogue continues its tryst with technology and we get to see more of such innovative creations in the future.

Reportedly, Amazon is in the midst of meticulously working on several machine-learning systems that if end up working out perfectly can help not only in spotting and reacting to latest fashion trends, but also shape one's own. The AI systems can help Amazon and several other companies in improving their trend tracking activities in other areas of retail, for example, churning out recommendations based on product spotting on social-media postings. The new effort could also help Amazon in expanding its reach in the clothing industry or even dominate it in the near future.

Last week saw Amazon giving us a glimpse of its interest and thought process for the sector by organising workshop on machine learning and fashion. One of the attendees who signed up for the event was, Kavita Bala, a professor at Cornell University. According to her, recent years have seen a whole lot of companies like Amazon investing their time and money in getting a better understanding of how fashion actually develops and grows in the real world. “This is completely changing the industry," she further added in a statement to MIT Technology Review.

The clothing world is currently witnessing a number of retailers making use of popular social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest to keep a track of the quickly changing fashion trends and keep themselves at pace with these changes. For example, there's a Startup called Stitch Fix, which provides personalised recommendations based on a user's social-media activity and preferences.

In the past few years, Amazon has actually worked hard on growing its apparel business. It has invested in developing its own clothing brands, spent money on good-quality photography shots for its products, and debuted its Prime Wardrobe, a novel concept which allows online shoppers to try clothes before actually buying them. For the unversed, the machine learning developed is being considered as extremely innovative as usually a computer needs to be fed extensive labelling in order for them to learn from visual information. But, in the social media world, people might not put that many labels.

One can say that the algorithm acts as a simple AI fashion designer. They use a cutting-edge tool called a generative adversarial network, or GAN, which were developed by a researcher on the Google Brain team. The GAN consists of two deep neural networks operating in tandem to learn efficiently from raw data. It internalises the properties of a particular style simply by looking at lots of examples, and it can then apply that style to an existing item of clothing. The system might not be as much sophisticated as the fashion industry wants it to be, but it definitely hints towards a revolution in the making.

Both of the aforementioned Amazon efforts were revealed in Amazon's workshop held last week. The event also saw many companies sharing their innovative efforts in the field of fashion and AI. For instance, a team from Indian clothing ecommerce site Myntra demonstrated a program that guesses a person’s correct size for a particular garment from his or her past purchases. Another interesting idea was from a group from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign who showed an algorithm that could help identify fashion-focused social-network accounts.
