ShopX - Omnipresent get Govt. Approval to Start E-Commmerce Drone Delivery Trials from Sept 1

Soon you might be able to order food from your favourite restaurant 30 km away and get it delivered to your home via a drone in less than 30 minutes. Until now drones were mostly being used for videography and surveillance. But a recent change in Govt. regulations will now allow long range drone based deliveries such as food delivery, online purchase delivery, medicine and blood delivery in cases of emergency on a large scale across India. The ministries of civil aviation and home affairs have moved at a remarkable speed and have given permissions to a select few companies to run beyond visual line of sight operations of drones. Many well know players in the UAV industry could not make it to the list because of tough technology and safety requirements from the Govt.

ShopX has come up with an innovative Drone "AirTrain" concept, for just in time delivery across Indian B2B value chains. This allows small retailers to pick "Drone Delivery" as a delivery option and get a wide range of products delivered to them within 30-60 minutes. Currently, these stores are limited by what they can carry in their limited shelf space, and conventional supply chains typically fulfil their needs once a week. With AirTrain, they can get real time fulfilment of products, thereby increasing their merchandizing ability and sales. ShopX is already running one of the largest eB2B retail networks in the country, with over 2 Lakh retailers on its technology platform.

Omnipresent comes with some solid background in this area. They had earlier done trial drone deliveries for medicine for AIIMS hospital in Delhi. ShopX and Omnipresent had jointly done trial deliveries in ShopX warehouses. Omnipresent has also developed inhouse AI Engine called the Nerve Center which allows smart scheduling planning detection and classification on board the drone. They are already empanelled by over 7 state Govt. agencies for drone based services Agriculture, Telecom, Oil refineries, Factories and Survey applications. They have done over 1 lac acres of agriculture and city mapping. "Our drones have been deployed in almost all states in India now, they have been especially useful in significantly improving output of industrial factories by giving them actionable insights on structural damage, catching theft, accurate stock calculation, virtual 3d tours and accurate mapping. Recently, we also got recognised as one of the top 5 UAV companies selected by Union Ministry of Agriculture to be given permission do precision spraying to fight recent locust attack via drones," said Aakash Sinha, Founder Omnipresent Tech. Aakash is a MS Robotics graduate from Carnegie Mellon, under guidance of Dr. Raj Reddy who was earlier president of American Society of AI, he was also Ex IT/AI advisor to US President. Aakash was also awarded TR35 (35 under 35) by MIT. Recipient of this illustrious award include top innovators like Zuckerberg and Gates. Omnipresent had also developed AI software for navigation of Prgyaan Rover on Chandrayaan mission. They have also been doing their bit for environment with their Drone Boat (Ro-boat) for the Clean Ganga Mission.

"With our partnership with Omnipresent, we want to put India at the forefront of utilizing drone tech for real applications today and intend to create a major disruption in supply chain especially for retail segment," said Amit Sharma, CEO and Co-founder of ShopX.

The Govt moving at record speed and has eased out most of the drone regulations for commercial operations by trusted service providers. It is backing BVLOS operations and creating automated Digital Sky platform which will allow authorized drone operators to fly in nearly 80% of India (Green and Yellow Zones) with automated real time online permissions process. This would result in exponential growth in the drone market as host of applications related to Ecom, food delivery and cross country mapping of highways, powerlines, railroad etc. It is expected that the drone services market with grow to about $2 billion in next 3-4 years in India.

Sharing an instance from 7 years ago, Aakash recalls how they had tested the feasibility of drone deliveries for Jabong at the behest of then MD and Co-founder, Praveen Sinha. "He told us that once we could break through the technological and regulatory bottlenecks of the time, drone deliveries would disrupt the retail logistics space in the country. 7 years later, his prediction stands true."

On being asked on the potential of drone deliveries, Praveen Sinha said that technology always holds the key in accelerating any sector and it is the same for retail. "A decade ago E-commerce was at its nascent stages in India and here we are at a stage where drone deliveries are going to be a reality. Once drone deliveries and 3D Printing become economically viable, we will see a disruption in the supply chain that no one envisioned," he concluded.

Zomato Acquires IIT Kanpur Alumnus' Drone Delivery Startup TechEagle

Restaurant discovery and food delivery firm Zomato has acquired Lucknow-based drone delivrey startup TechEagle Innovations, for an undisclosed amount, to carve a path toward drone-based food delivery in India.

TechEagle Innovations, which we featured in May this year, is an IIT-Kanpur alumni startup allows to take orders through a food app and deliver it through drone can carry weight up to 2 kg and can travel a distance of up to 10 kilometer.

The acquisition will help Zomato in creating a hub-to-hub delivery network powered by hybrid multi-rotor drones, Zomato said in a statement. The company, however, did not share any financial details of the acquisition.

Commenting on the development, Zomato Founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal said, “We are currently at the early stage of aerial innovations and are taking baby steps towards building a tomorrow wherein users can expect a drone to deliver the food they ordered online.

Founded in 2015 by IIT-Kanpur alumnus Vikram Singh along with his four friends, Tech Eagle specialize in developing DRONEs/UAVs of 1-5 meter( wingspan), 1-10kg (Payload), 1-5 Hours (Flight Time), and Modular for Companies, Research Institutes and individuals

He further said , "Our first 'delivery job' currently is to design multi-rotor drones that can pick up a payload under 5 kg and set up drone delivery circuits for reducing the last mile delivery leg. We believe that robots powering the last mile delivery is an inevitable part of the future and hence is going to be a significant area of investment for us."

Food delivery business currently contributes about 65% to the overall revenue of the company, Zomato said. The company has over 75,000 restaurant partners offering food delivery services across 100 cities in India.

Notably, Indian government has allowed commercial use of drones starting December 1 this year. Under the policy , announced in August, the users of drones will be required to do a one-time registration of their drones. They will also need to register the pilots of these drones as well as their owners. After the registration, users will have to request for permission to fly it on a mobile application. Its been since 2015 that it has been speculating that drones can commercially be used. From e-commerce deliveries to delivering pizza, last couple of years saw many plans from startups to giants like Flipkart planning drone deliveries in the past however as India's aviation regulator, Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which till now has restricted the use of drones in India for commercial purpose, the plans made never manifested into reality.

But now, all these will now certainly be possible as Indian government on Monday announced the Drone Policy allowing the commercial use of Drones starting December 1 this year.

According to government officials, the users of drones will be required to do a one-time registration of their drones. They will also need to register the pilots of these drones as well as their owners. After the registration, users will have to request for permission to fly it on a mobile application. An automated process will either permit or deny the request instantly.

Last November, the then Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju first announced about the policy on use of drones, including for commercial purposes.

Drones have been classified into five categories based on maximum take-off weight -- nano (up to 250g), micro (251g to two kg), mini (2kg to 25kg), small (25kg to 150kg) and large (over 150kg).

For the lightest category Nano, a payload of up to 250 grams and flight to a maximum height of 50 feet, have been approved. A user need not seek prior approval for operating a nano drone.

In case, if the permission is denied, any drone without the digital permit will be unable to take off. If the permission is given, the drones will be allowed to fly during daytime-only. The maximum altitude allowed for drones to fly will be 400-ft.

While announcing the new policy, Union civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu said, “Today we start an exciting new chapter in India’s aviation history by allowing commercial use of drones. I am sure that many new and exciting applications will emerge that will propel India’s economy forward. Our progressive regulations will encourage a vast Made in India drone industry.”

Civil aviation minister, Minister of State (MoS), Jayant Sinha said, “There are opportunities for our aviation sector and for India's startup industry as India is set to become a global leader as far as drone ecosystem is concerned. It's important for us to have a policy roadmap and regulations that support growth of the drone ecosystem.”

The new policy has been named as Drone Regulations 1.0 and it provides guidelines and has provision for stricter penalties.

Officials said that the ministry is further working on Drone Regulations 2.0 which will examine the issues like certification of safe and controlled operation of drone hardware and software and Airspace management through automated operations linked into overall airspace management framework.

As per the guidelines, Airspace has been partitioned into Red Zone (flying not permitted), Yellow Zone (controlled airspace), and Green Zone (automatic permission).

For flying in controlled Airspace, filing of the flight plan and obtaining Air Defence Clearance (ADC) and Flight Information Centre (FIC) number will be necessary.

As per the regulation, “No Drone Zones” will be around airports; near the international border, Vijay Chowk in Delhi; State Secretariat Complex in State Capitals, strategic locations and vital and military installations.

Drones are a technology platform which has wide-ranging applications from photography to agriculture, from infrastructure asset maintenance to insurance. Drones range in size from very small and those that can carry multiple kilograms of payload.

Drone Regulations:

  • Drones could only fly during the day-time

  • The upper height ceiling of flying drones is 400 feet.

  • Airspace has been partitioned into Red Zone (flying not permitted), Yellow Zone (controlled airspace), and Green Zone (automatic permission).

In the first commercial use of drones, e-commerce giant Amazon has used a drone to deliver a bag of popcorn to an address in rural England.

In October last year, Amazon had already filed patent for delivery drones in India.

In the same month, China’s e-commerce giant JD.com, also called Jingdong, unveiled its super-sized delivery drones at the service of its customers. Considered China's largest online retailer, JD.com has a national distribution network that matches the coverage of global e-commerce giant Amazon.

China has once again done it. While others are still simply talking about it, China’s JD.com, also called Jingdong, is soon going to have super-sized delivery drones at the service of its customers. Considered China's largest online retailer, JD.com has a national distribution network that matches the coverage of global ecommerce giant Amazon.

Being pitched as world's largest civilian delivery drone, JD.com's robots are going to be three-engine, autonomous, vertical-takeoff drones that will be capable of carrying a payload of over 1 ton up to 186 miles. Considering it will be delivering retail packages, the weight bracket seems practical.

One of the things that made JD.com’s delivery drone dream possible was the support it received from Shaanxi provincial government. The government allowed the company to operate hundreds of low-altitude routes within a 300km radius, an area of more than 11,500 square miles. On the other side, American ecommerce giant Amazon is still fighting out with its Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about where and when it can fly its parcel-carrying drones.

With its drones, JD.coms’s intends to target Shaanxi farmers, who can use the quadcopters to distribute their perishable vegetables, fruits and meat without breaking out a sweat about rural roads and traffic snarls.

While China might emerge first in the race, other countries aren’t that behind in the race either.

Zipline, a California-based startup which uses drones to deliver medicine and blood to remote areas in Rwanda, Africa, has also started its delivery program in the United States. On the commercial side, Amazon, which first announced its plans of using drones for delivering packages in 2013, in a special telecast of US TV show 60 Minutes and promised humanity their service by 2018. Amazon completed its first public demonstration of a Prime Air drone delivery in the U.S. in March this year, when it carried sunscreen to attendees at an Amazon-hosted conference in Palm Springs, California.

However, the 2018 target set by Amazon might or might not be met as the company has to wait for the Federal Aviation Administration to craft rules about how to fly over populated areas and beyond the line of sight of the operator. And that could take years.

Coming to India, in 2015, India’s e-commerce giant Flipkart announced its plans to use drones to deliver goods to rural areas. However, there hasn’t been any update on the project yet. Coming to Amazon India, the American giant this week filed patent for exclusive rights on multi-scale fiducials, black and white marks on any object for the unmanned aerial vehicles to identify them from different distances in the Indian subcontinent. This is Amazon’s second patent application in India surrounding drones. Prior to this, the company had filed a patent in India for drone technology with respect to propeller safety.

Forget Amazon Prime Drones, These Parcelcopters Are Already Delivering Parcels in Germany

While many believe in talking, DHL, the global shipping giant, believes only in doing. DHL recently released a press release sharing its excitement and happiness about concluding a three-month test of its third Parcelcopter generation. For people wondering what a Parcelcopter really is, Parcelcopter is an adorable name given by DHL to its drones that the company is using to ship packages within a small area at quick speeds.

The trial run was conducted between January and March this year in the Bavarian community of Reit im Winkl, as a part of a larger innovation and research project. Private customers on the Winklmoosalm plateau and in the Reit im Winkl area were invited by DHL to test out the meticulously designed Packstations, the Parcelcopter Skyport. Residents were required to drop off their packages in the packstations, after which drones took charge and carried out the entire shipping process.

The international shipper ran a total of 130 autonomous loading and offloading cycles during the trail run. With this, DHL became the first parcel service provider all around the world to directly integrate a parcelcopter logistically into its delivery chain. The shipment company strongly believes, that with its this combination of fully automated loading and unloading as well as an increased transport load and range of its Parcelcopter, they will be able to achieve a level of technical and procedural maturity that will eventually allow them to carry field trials in urban areas as well.



In order to test the technically upgraded vehicle to its full potential, DHL tested them with heavier loads, on longer distances and even did a delivery to an alpine region known for its meteorological and geographical challenges. The first challenge that DHL had to conquer was the rapidly changing weather conditions and severe temperature fluctuation in the testing area. Once that was done, the Parcelcopter performed a series of flawless flights.

The Parcelcopter's cargo typically carried either urgently needed medicines or sporting goods. The highlight was that the drone arrived at the Alm station within just eight minutes of its take-off. The same trip when covered on a car takes more than 30 minutes during a wintry day.

In the Press Release, DHL especially thanked the German government, for its permission to create a special restricted flight zone that was majorly crucial for the success of the project. This is something that Amazon had been trying to get out of the U.S. government for quite a long time now. Unfortunately, DHL seems to have left Amazon much behind in the drone race.

Imagine not having to run errands like getting your monthly groceries, weekly vegetable supplies and dropping off clothes at your local laundry shop. Wouldn't you save a bunch of time if someone ran these errands for you? Well, your wishes might finally come true if the government and private sector decide to be on the same page on a technology called drones.

According to industry experts, drones will be safer than general aviation and that they will operate quietly enough so they will not be of any disturbance to anyone.

"Moving people and stuff around the planet in an efficient way is where I want to get," said Dave Vos, head of the technology giant Google X’s Project Wing experimental drone delivery program at a recently held aviation industry event in Washington.

The technology giant has been closely working on the drone technology for three years now. Other than Google, giants like Wal-mart and Amazon have also been working on drone technology in order to use them for deliveries.

Playing spoil sport in the whole scenario are a few regulatory issues. The current norms require businesses considering using flying drones for commercial purposes to get the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval on case-to-case basis. Further, the rules also dictate that companies can’t use drones at night and drone operators are not allowed to operate more than one drone at a time.

According to drone lobbyists and giants like Amazon, such rules are stunting the bright future of the U.S. drone industry.

India To Be One Of The First Countries To Use Drones For E-Commerce Deliveries

From next year onwards there won't be just birds in your skies. You might even get to witness small aircrafts flying over your head everyday delivering clothes, gadgets etc. at your doorstep. What's even better is the fact that we might finally get to beat the United States at something.

The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which is the aviation regulator in India, has initiated the process of drafting guidelines for the civil use of drones. The guidelines are expected to be completed in a period of next few months and ecommerce companies in India might be able to make use of these drones for delivery by the start of next year.

For those who don't know, drones are small aircraft systems that are remotely controlled and unmanned. Earlier we reported that Flkipkart is in talks with DGCA to use flying drones For delivering packages to its customers in rural areas.

"The DGCA has restricted the use of drones in India at present, but at the same time it has initiated the process of framing the guidelines for operations,” said a civil aviation ministry official in a statement to a leading newspaper.

The restriction is not only in India but the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has also till date not issued any standards or recommendations for the use of drones for civil purposes. In 2014, the DGCA had issued a public notice restricting the use of drones for civil purposes in India.

Whenever the guidelines are finalised and passed, India will become one of the first countries to allow use of drones for civil purposes. The DGCA official are currently considering all the safety concerns involved with the use of technology.

However, the use of drones is still allowed in filmmaking, where drones are used to take shots from a height of 200 to 400 feet.

Last year, US ecommerce giant Amazon was expected to start doing delivery trials using drones during the busy festive season of 2014 but the plan was dropped last minute as the regulations didn't permit such operations.

Last year, the use of drones came into centre-stage when a Mumbai based restaurant delivered a half a kilogram pizza in Lower Parel by making use of drones.

What took the entire country by surprise was the fact that the total time taken by the drone to deliver and comeback to the restaurant was less than 30 minutes, which is what a delivery boy typically takes.

A country which is currently ahead of India in use of drones is China. The country has already started the trials in February and is currently delivering packets of up to 340 grams.

US ecommerce giant Amazon had showcased its drones and drone delivery process among much fanfare, long back in 2013. But, the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) hasn't yet given a go-ahead for widespread delivery using drones. The ecommerce giant's repeated efforts to convince FAA haven't been able to generate any concrete results so far.
