Wassup Acquires Ezeewash For a Structured Full Equity Deal; Announces Its Foray into Hyderabad

Wassup, an on-demand convenience brand co-founded by Balachandar.R and Durga Das, has announced the launch of Hyderabad Operations through the acquisition of Ezeewash for a structured full equity deal. Ezeewash has been in operations for 3 years in Hyderabad and has serviced over 8000 customers and currently does over 100 orders per day. With this acquisition Wassup On-demand Laundry Convenience will offer its services to the denizens of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Wassup offers laundry, dry cleaning, shoe and bag refurbishment in 7 cities currently – Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Chennai, Cochin and Pune. The company has currently 50 pickup points called “Aggregating Hubs” where the garments can also be dropped off by the customer. 50 more Hubs will be added during the course of next 4-5 months through the Franchisee Model. The brand vision is to be in 100 cities in the next 3 years. Wassup has processed more than 40 million garments so far and this number is growing month on month.

The on-demand convenience industry globally is estimated at $9 billion. The laundry market in India is estimated to be valued at Rs.200,000 crores annually out of which 95% is unorganized.

With entry in Hyderabad market Wassup on-demand has expressed its intention to be part of the industrial and service growth that is happening in key cities of Andhra Pradesh & Telangana. The brand will start with 3 Retail Stores / Collection points in Hyderabad to begin with and expand to 25 retail stores across Hyderabad in 3 months time. However from day one service will be offered on-demand across the city through the pickup and drop facility through their on-demand app which can be downloaded on Android and on Apple store.

The initial stores are being launched in Whitefield and Madhapur areas.

Mr. Balachandar, Co-Founder & CEO Wassup, said “We are very glad to announce our foray into Hyderabad and with this acquisition we will now be able to cater to the demands of the twin cities as well. We will continue to grow organically and also through acquisitions across other cities. We are also extremely excited about the host of new initiatives we are launching in the next two quarters”.

“We are addressing a market in India that today stands at $34 billion, which includes both the organized & the unorganized segment and we see a huge potential where technology & modernization can change the industry completely”, he further added.

He said Ezeewash is the second company that Wassup has acquired and is also negotiating three more acquisitions. Earlier Wassup had acquired Chamak – India’s professional brand in laundry thereby creating the first branded consolidation in the global laundry industry.

Mr. Ravi Kumar Pinjala the Founder CEO of Ezewash will takeover as the Vice President for Wassup’s AP & Telangana Operations. 

Wassup was founded in 2011 and has washed over 40 million pcs over the last 5 years. It is having presence in over 7 cities and 14 territories and servicing over 3 lakh customers.

The startup has also launched a slew of measures for the upliftment of the industry. It run’s Indian vocational academy for training in laundry skills and is also launched Wassup Dhobi Partnership Program; a special program aimed at Upliftment of Dhobi’s who form an integral part of this industry. Wassup also aims to provide employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for 300 people largely women. The retail expansion of the company will be through the franchisee model which would encourage Women entrepreneurs and first time entrepreneurs.

On-Demand Laundry Startup Wassup Acquires Its Peer Chamak

Chennai-based on-demand laundry and refurbishment service Wassup today announced that it has acquired laundry service provider Chamak in Mumbai for an undisclosed amount in a full equity deal. The acquisition allows Chennai-Wassup, owned by Laundry Project India Pvt Ltd, to add Mumbai to its existing network of operation and strengthen its laundry services play.

Founded in 2011 and seed funded by a US based participative venture capital firm called Das Star Ventures Pvt Ltd., Wassup claims to b India's first friendly neighbourhood laundry & dry cleaning service. It has a free home pickup and delivery service.

Chamak, on other hand, has been backed by investors like Kensington Capital, Index Advisory, Innosight Ventures, Calvert Investments and high net worth individuals like Rajan Mariwala (Marico Group) and Sandeep Tandon, who has also invested in Freecharge and Tiny Owl.

In May, Wassup raised $2 million in pre-Series A funding from Arun Chandra Mohan and Praveen Sinha, co-founders of Rocket Internet-incubated lifestyle e-tailer Jabong.com.

Wassup has been operational in Chennai for the last 4 years across 10+ stores through its franchisee model. It also starting its services in Bengaluru with its first company owned store on Kundanahalli/ Tubarahalli road on Whitefield. Pune, Cochin and Delhi operations were launched recently.

The Chamak acquisition deal is in line with Wassup's plan of expanding into 100 cities over the next three years. The four-year-old startup operates in Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin and Pune. It also has 30 offline points where customers can drop garments for laundry.

The on-demand convenience industry is pegged at USD 9 billion, globally. The laundry market is estimated to be valued at Rs 2,00,000 crores annually, out of which 95 per cent is unorganised.
