The Dharavi Dream Project Wins the TSS Women Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the TiE Sustainability Summit

Asia’s largest school of hip-hop was bestowed with this distinguished honour for creating tangible socio-economic impact and solving problems defined by the UN’s SDGs

The Dharavi Dream Project (TDDP) has won the prestigious TSS Women Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The award was presented to co-founder Dolly Rateshwar at the 2021 TiE Sustainability Summit, a venture by TiE Global — the largest non-profit organisation devoted to enabling entrepreneurship in the sustainability ecosystem. Under Rateshwar’s innovative leadership, TDDP has evolved from a small room of 5 students to a bustling hip-hop school (the largest in Asia) of 133 artists in Dharavi, Mumbai. The institute scaled operations even further in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, solidifying its presence in 6 countries virtually (India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Dubai and Canada), while also taking all its classes online. Since then, 847 students from around the world have attended the lessons in session at TDDP’s virtual school. This number only keeps growing.

Says Dolly Rateshwar, “Entrepreneurship is the epitome of vulnerability and courage; Dharavi, as a place, personifies both. The TSS Social Enterprise Awards recognise businesses that focus on social impact by creating a tangible change in society and communities, as well as those that set an example by leading from the frontlines — social entrepreneurs who’ve leveraged their business processes, innovation and technology to solve problems defined in the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs). I’m grateful TDDP was awarded under this category as managing and growing an organisation in Dharavi is no mean feat. You can expect to deal with many unplanned physical and emotional challenges here where daily life is defined by varied human struggles. The TSS Women Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award is hence special for each one of us at TDDP as it validates years of hard work, resource-building and resilience.”

Rateshwar, the co-founder of TDDP, was bestowed with this distinguished honour on October 6th. At the TiE Sustainability Summit, Rateshwar spoke of the linguistic diversity of Indian hip-hop that’s particularly reflected at TDDP, alongside the resilience and grit of the artists sparking a revolution in the country. She also shared at length about her experience at the MIT media lab; how there she spearheaded the discovery of young innovators and here, the discovery of young talent. The former MIT, Google, LinkedIn, Deloitte and Tesseract alumnus received the honour on behalf of TDDP in the presence of 25,000+ global entrepreneurs from 50+ countries and other dignitaries including global policymakers and government representatives.

Adds Dolly Rateshwar,

“I would like to dedicate this award to TDDP’s co-founder, Samir Bangara’s, memory. His vision for TDDP has come full circle and we hope to continue to build on the visionary blueprint he laid down. I would also like to dedicate this award to MC Heam. He’s been a lighthouse of strength and guidance to all TDDP, especially for each talent. He’s taught us all so much without expecting a single penny in return. Needless to say, each and everyone involved to date — be it behind the scenes or on the frontlines — has our immense gratitude for their contribution to TDDP. Universal Music Group has also been one of the strongest pillars at TDDP, particularly Devraj Sanyal, who has been a rock to the team and empowered every artist at the school. Each talent of ours is a testimony to the collective spirit and grit of Dharavi; they’re changemakers in their own right who’re revolutionising the ongoing history of hip-hop! Thank you for supporting us.”

Since its inception in 2013, TDDP has rendered 50+ live showcases, including performances at prestigious platforms such as Rolling Stone India and Qyuki’s Haq Se Hindustan concert, the MAMI film festival, the Ziro Festival, the YouTube Music Launch and many more. 50% of these gigs were paid as TDDP also aims at enabling a sustainable future for their talent. A school for under-resourced hip-hop artists, TDDP is often touted as constituting the future of Indian hip-hop. The students of TDDP continue to carve their mark in India’s diverse hip-hop scene — an expansive space that sees artists from all walks of life put their truth to words, throwing open the gates to a once elusive music landscape — with landmark releases such as the COVID-19 anthem “Kar Dikhaya!” and the 2020 version of “One Love,” Bob Marley’s iconic song that was reimagined by the Marley family, featuring TDDP, in support of UNICEF’s response to the pandemic. Empowered by the TSS Women Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award, TDDP will continue to nurture and support a sustainable and historic Indian hip-hop landscape.

The Man Who Inspired a Menstrual Pad Man Movie Dr Arunachalam Muruganatham to Launch 100% Bio-degradable, Low-cost Sanitary Pads Very Soon

The trials met with 98% of success and the products will be rolled out soon

Nearly 1200 crore Sanitary Pads are being discarded each year, and they take 500 to 800 years to decompose

90% of women in India are not using sanitary pads: Dr Arunachalam Muruganatham,

We have impacted 1,10,000 plus rural women who got direct employment: Dr.Arunachalam Muruganatham.

45 million women shifted from unhygienic methods to hygiene sanitary pads using the method: Dr.Arunachalam Muruganatham.

Our dream is to make India a 100% sanitary napkin using a country from the current level of less than 10%. : Dr.Arunachalam Muruganatham

I dont want to become 'Unicorn', all know is 'Sweet Corn".

The Indian sanitary pad revolutionary, Dr.Arunachalam Muruganatham, who is known to the world as the Pad Man plans to launch 100% biodegradable sanitary pads very soon. Revealing this while addressing the virtual gathering of TiE Sustainability Global Summit he revealed that the trial was on and he could meet up with 98% success and need some time before the final product hits the market.

TiE Sustainability Summit is the world's largest summit on sustainability space and is being attended by over 40,000 social enterprises, startups and entrepreneurs from 54 countries. It is hosted by TiE Hyderabad.

Replying to Mr Bhanu Prakash, the moderator if had any plans on coming with bio-degradable pads, as the nearly 12 billion(1200 crore) sanitary pads are discarded each year and they take 500 to 800 years to degrade, he said, I am aware of the problem. According to Menstrual Health Alliance India, one sanitary pad could take 500 to 800 years to decompose as the plastic used is non-biodegradable and can lead to health and environmental hazards

It is the philosophy ingrained in my system that anything we produce has to be with natural material and it must be naturally friendly. And we are happy that we are about to hit the market with the most environmentally friendly, low-cost sanitary napkins.

There are almost 60 unicorns( a term used to describe a startup with a value of over $1 billion) in the social entrepreneur space. Do you have any plans to become one, asked moderator Bhanu Prakash? "I don't want to become a Unicorn. All I know is sweet corn(a variety of maize). I asked my daughter what Unicorn is. She told me it is another sweet corn. What is the use of becoming a unicorn without creating any social impact? I never dreamt of any such things. I saw many create wealth, become a unicorn and then they become philanthropists. Instead, I want to travel such a journey, each step of my journey leaving a long-lasting footprint that guards Mother Nature. I am not in a hurry. We don't retail our products. We detail our product. Business is not about winning. It is a journey. I always dream of how I can create a social impact. When I do it that will be my 'corn', whether it is the unicorn or whatever the nomenclature you give he said.

There are SUVs( Sports Utility Vehicle, a car classification) and Locomotives(a powered railway vehicle used for pulling trains). I want to be a locomotive that carries the huge load with SUVs speed so that I reach out to more rural people, he said.

Being small you can do big things, he said. Big companies can do big things. My story is just that being small and having a great social impact. And Being small you can be a driver of change and you can make a big positive impact on society..... and this is called "Social Enterprise", he said. I have a social problem with a successful livelihood. 90% of women in India are not using sanitary pads. I have done this through trial and error. In due course, I have lost my respect. I was considered a mad man. My wife threw divorce papers on my face. But, I always kept the end in mind. And now I have got all that I have lost. I am a happy man. I can't call it a success. It is a journey, he said.

What do you need to be a driver of change? He asked and said, you don't need anything. You need just a PROBLEM. My dream was to be a solution to a problem. And needed innovation to be a driver of change. I have set up 5300 low-cost sanitary pad making machines all over India and 27 other countries. My story matched for all----Frugal designing, successful disruptive designing; successful rural marketing; successful social entrepreneur; a model for "Blue Ocean Strategy"; an innovative out of the box management practice and frugal way of overcoming competition. I have created a measurable social impact. Out of it 1,10,000 plus rural women got direct employment or livelihood created. Because of our efforts, more than 45 million women shifted from unhygienic methods to hygiene sanitary pads using the method. The change we wanted to make was to create a million rural employment opportunities for poor women. Making India a 100% sanitary napkin country from the current level of less than 10% is our dream. Our design is very well matched for over 106 developing nations so if we change what we can do in India, we can also do the all over the world, he concluded his talk.

Climate Change: Meghalaya Planning 'Climate Change' Museum and A Subject in Schools; Exploring Pineapple for Vegan Leather

Pandemic is nothing, but climate change is going to be devastating: Mr. James Sangma Cabinet Minister for Forest & Environment and Power, Meghalaya

Meghalaya is planning to set up a Museum on Climate Change to sensitize people, exploring pineapple for vegan leather and also is building a consensus to introduce climate change as a subject in the school curriculum: James Sangma.

India has potential in the Food and Agri sector what it had in IT: Mr Manoj Kumar, Co-founder of Araku Coffee

Pandemic is nothing, but climate change is going to be devastating, said James Sangma, Cabinet Minister for Forest & Environment and Power, Meghalaya while delivering a keynote address virtually on Monday night on day one of the TiE Sustainability Summit 2021, on being organised by TiE Hyderabad.

76% of our land is forested. It is one of the top 5 states for BioDiversity. We have a unique forest economy. We want to be a silicon valley for green-based products. Forests are the best carbon removal investments and reforestation strategies and improving forest management together have a large potential to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, he said.

Meghalaya is one of the major pineapple producing states in India. It contributes 8% of the total pineapple produced in India. Pineapple is the most important fruit crop of the state. We are working on PineApple for Vegan leather. We are also building a consensus to introduce climate change as a subject in the school curriculum to sensitise children. A climate change museum is also around the corner. We hope to inspire action on the climate crisis through this museum. Climate change is a defining challenge of our times. We must rise to fight it together, Mr James Sangama said.

James Sangma - Cabinet Minister for Forest, Environment & Power, Meghalaya

The Climate Museum is creating a culture for action on climate, inviting people from all walks of life into the conversation and building community around just solutions. Most people in the US are worried about the climate crisis but silent and inactive. Building on the popularity and trust held by museums, we bring people together to learn about solutions and join the fight for a brighter future, providing multiple pathways into civic engagement.

India has potential in the Food and Agri sector which it had in IT, Mr Manoj Kumar, Co-founder of Araku Coffee said. He was in conversation with

Mr Suresh Raju, Partner, Jupiter Alternative Investment Fund on "Showcase: "Araku Coffee from Tribal India to Paris" at one of the sessions later on Monday night.

Araku Coffee has a store in Paris in Paris’ Le Marais district and another was recently opened in India in Bangalore. The globally recognised coffee brand known for its farmer-friendly and sustainable practices thus had a lot of interest from the participants.

Suresh Raju in conversation with Manoj Kumar, Co-founder of Araku Coffee

Araku, a remote valley in Andhra Pradesh, achieved global recognition, with its award-winning coffee. Coffee is now available in many countries. It also has a store in Bangalore.

It is a 22-year-old journey. Today the tribals are lakhpatis. Their average earnings are 3 to 4 times more of the national average, he said. And added that the tribals in the eastern ghats found their niche.

Though Naxal infected, very harsh living conditions where giving birth to a child is almost considered as dieing. The Britishers raised coffee there in the 19th century. The 2,000sqkm valley with iron-rich soil was producing some of the finest crimson coffee cherries, handpicked by Adivasi farmers. I saw huge potential in them but I had to address them first on Health, Education and livelihood, he said.

I saw a 2,000sqkm valley with iron-rich soil producing some of the finest crimson coffee cherries, handpicked by Adivasi farmers. It was an 8 years-long project. We formed them into groups and subsequently into the cooperative which is now the world's largest organic coffee cooperative.

We restored close to lakh hectares of forest through this venture. We are now replicating this model in Himachal Pradesh to grow fruits, in UP, Vidarbha and helping Kerala and Orissa and fight climate change.

Addressing the gathering Mr. Jayesh Ranjan said, the Telangana state, just being 7 years old, demonstrated in umpteen domains how sustainability can be achieved. He has listed out various measures and initiatives taken up by the state since its formation. From the days of drought prone to neglected agriculture to outbound migrations to depleting forests, diminishing groundwater levels, power holidays, the state has been doing very well on many fronts that is because of a clear vision of sustainable Telangana.

The official highlighted the government’s ambitious programs such as haritha haram in greening the state and Mission Kakatiya reviving 47000 lakes in the state. He also highlighted Telangana’s performance in the generation of renewable sources of energy, electric mobility by introducing a clear cut policy etc. All these decisions were made at foundation levels keeping principles of sustainability in mind. The state is futuristic in environmental management. That is the reason why the state could attract whose-is-who of the world to invest in the state.

Manohar Reddy, Mahavir Sharma, Suresh Raju, Rony Yedidia Clein, Claudio Ansorena, Anat, Jayesh Ranjan, Gautam Adani, Nikki Haley,

Speaking further Mr. Jayesh added that Costa Rica and Israel, the partner countries of TiE Sustainability Summit, exemplified the best of Sustainable living. Costa Rica is the best in global environmental standards. Telangana state would like to explore oil farm cultivation in partnership with Costa Rica. We wish to emulate them, he said.

Giving his grand keynote address, Mr.Gautam Adani Chairman, Adani Group said there is no vaccine for climate change. At least, pandemics like Covid 19 can be countered by vaccines. The Director-General of the World Health Organization summarized it well when he said there is no vaccine for climate change! The annual rate of increase in atmospheric CO2 emissions since 1970 is up almost 100 times. The search for sustainable solutions starts with admitting that the current situation is unsustainable, Mr. Gautam Adani said.

Therefore, the task before us is not just to find solutions to climate change, also to ensure — through science, policy, and technological development — that the principles of equitability are not ignored. Solutions should allow us to bridge the tradeoffs between economic, social, privacy, and environmental policies. A CO2 molecule released in the east is just as damaging to the west. A CO2 molecule released by the poor is just as damaging to the rich. A CO2 molecule released by the already-born is just as damaging to the soon-to-be-born.

As an entrepreneur, I stay optimistic. I believe that the Covid 19 pandemic has forced us to find the will to kickstart a massive ESG-driven economic transformation. I am also confident that the most viable climate change solutions will be digital, and technology-driven — supported by policies that help accelerate adoption. My optimism comes from the realization that the impact of the pandemic would have been far more terrible had the digital technologies of today been absent. This should be an indication of the opportunity before us, Mr. Gautam Adani said.

I also believe, Mr. Adani added, that this convergence of sustainability and digitization will establish new disruptive business models that will create the next set of unicorns. This is where organizations like TiE become essential — they enable collaboration across entrepreneurs and investors who see opportunities wherever intersections and friction exist. And the only way we can reduce the friction that sustainability generates in today’s businesses is through the intersection with technology.

Speaking about India, Mr. Gautam Adani said, last year when I spoke here, I had said that over the next three decades India will become a 28 trillion dollar economy. It is now expected that by 2050, India’s per capita income will expand from about one-thirtieth of that of the United States to one-third of the latter’s per capita income. That is an astonishing rise.

Also, in 2050, the median age of 1.6 billion Indians will still be just 38 years. The world will never again see a middle class as large as the one India will have - and that at such a peak consuming age. In addition, the digital acceleration in India is just beginning and will create a tailwind not yet factored into the assumed 8% nominal growth rate. I fundamentally believe the Indian economy is still to hit its inflexion point of decades of double-digit growth. Therefore, I now think I may have understated my 2050 GDP projection of $28 trillion. Also, given the sheer growth in end consumption rates, I expect India to become the world’s top target destination for an immense quantum of FDI over this period, making the tailwind even stronger.

Let me discuss the specific opportunities around sustainability and drill down to where I see the biggest near-term possibility, Mr. Gautam Adani said. At the upcoming COP 26 summit in Glasgow in November, the world’s most powerful countries will lay the foundation for a series of global policy changes. I believe these will be transformational and will accelerate the economic opportunities arising out of the global effort to combat climate change. As technologies evolve rapidly, these opportunities will equate to trillions of dollars of investments he said.

These will include next-generation high-efficiency solar panels, low carbon materials that make the largest offshore wind turbines affordable, mainstreaming of carbon capture technologies, various fit-for-purpose battery technologies, algorithm-driven smarter and distributed grids, electric mobility, and hydrogen-related technologies.

Of all these technologies, today, solar is the fastest-growing source of power. Over the past decade, the price of solar panels has dropped by 90% and possibly over the next decade we will see price drops of the same magnitude as panels become even more efficient and new materials come into play. The fact is that the marginal cost of solar power is moving towards “zero” and this is both transformative and disruptive.

However, as always, it is the “combination” or “intersection” of technologies that create disruptive business models. The combination which I believe is a game-changing model for sustainability is that of solar generation and hydrogen production! It is fascinating that a pHoton can travel 90 million miles in 9 minutes to hit a piece of silicon on Earth. This in turn generates an electron to split an H2O molecule leading to the release of a proton — or what we call a Hydrogen atom — and now seen as the ultimate source of dense green energy. Our Earth receives enough photons every hour to meet our global energy needs for an entire year.

The ability of this almost “zero” cost electron to economically split an H2O molecule and create 100% green hydrogen in the future is a near certainty. Hydrogen is the trigger for the smarter use of other renewables by becoming the long-term transport and distributed storage solution for electricity. It is the key link in the energy transition journey that, along with wind and solar, will stabilize decentralized power generation. For India, decentralized power generation is a massive game-changer — especially for the rural population.

While these scenarios emerge, the Adani Group is not sitting still. We are tripling our solar power generation capacity over the next four years. This is a rate of growth currently unmatched by any other company anywhere on the planet. Our Renewables Portfolio has reached the initial target of 25GW a full four years ahead of schedule. Today, we are already the world’s largest solar power player. This puts us well on track to be the world’s largest renewable power generating company by 2030.

Also, over the next decade, we will invest over 20 billion dollars in renewable energy generation. Our overall organic and inorganic investments across the entire green energy value chain will range between 50 and 70 billion dollars. This will include investments with potential partners for electrolyzer manufacturing, backward integrations to secure the supply chain for our solar and wind generation businesses, and AI-based industrial cloud platforms.

We are confident that our integrated value chain, our scale, and our experience puts us on the road to be the producer of the least expensive green electron anywhere in the world. This advantage opens several new pathways for us including setting us up to be one of the largest green hydrogen producers in the world, thereby opening up additional possibilities to be a partner of choice for several other industrial businesses.

To wrap up his keynote he gave a message. A few research studies indicate that the Indus Valley civilization underwent a period of climate change about 4,000 years ago. The outcome then appears to be uncertain. However, today, we are aware of the effects of climate change and hence the outcome should not be uncertain. What we need is the will — and who better than “The Indus Entrepreneurs” to enable this will. The TiE platform is unmatched in scale, and it must take the responsibility to trigger a movement that brings together an ecosystem of entrepreneurs and investors that work together to build equitable solutions for a sustainable world.

H.E. Dr. Claudio Ansorena, Ambassador, Republic of Costa Rica said Costa Rica is the leader in Sustainable Environmental Issues. We are a small nation. India is 55 times bigger than you. But our shared values are common such as democracy, peace, sustainability, and the environment. We are proud partners for the summit and we will contribute as much as we can. We embarked on our journey of sustainability as early as 1970.99% of energy consumption is renewable energy. Our forest cover rose from 26% in the 1980s and has now gone up to 59%. He has also listed out some of the most initiatives that Costa Rica launched in the pursuit of the sustainability goals.

The planet is heating up, glaciers are melting. Sea levels are increasing. We need a global attempt to save our planet. It is not the failure of the environment but the morals of the society, he said.

In a video message Nikki Haley, Former US Ambassador to the UN said private enterprises are capable of many solutions.

Mrs. Rony Yedidia Clein, Deputy Chief of Mission of Israel; Ms. VeredMivtzari, EM Director, Startup Nation Central (SNC), Israel and others also addressed the occasion.

TiE Hyderabad and TiE Israel have entered in to a MoU to foster more business collaborations.

TiE Sustainability Summit to Enable $100 Million Funding for Social Enterprises

Social enterprises are fast emerging as sustainability power engines of world economies. They are driven by vision to improve society. They identify and solve societal problems through innovation and technology. They feed the hungry, resolve injustices, educate the illiterate, reach healthcare in the remotest corners of the world to cure the diseases, and protect the environment. Social enterprises are movers and shakers of the twenty first century — they are action oriented, they helped the needy (be it organizations or individuals). They act locally butimpact globally.

Indian social enterprises have been playing a key role in eliminating societal problems. iKure, an Indian social enterprise delivers primary healthcare, wellness, prevention health services to rural, semi-urban and urban areas and has treated 2.5 million people across 6,400 villages. They reach where no doctor reaches. Similarly, Thaely, founded by Ashay Bhave, 21-year-old former student of Amity University, has been manufacturing shoes from fabric derived from waste plastic bags. Each pair of shoes use a total of 15 plastic bags and 22 bottles that are sourced from scrap processing supermarkets and waste collection zones. Thaely is creating wealth out of waste and solving the societal problem by recycling plastic. Likewise, Dinesh who founded of incrEDIBLE, mass-produces edible from 100 million plastic utensils used every day in U.S.

Social enterprises led by social entrepreneurs are solving the problems faced by living beings on planet earth, however they too are faced with one major challenge – and that’s funding. Though most social entrepreneurs self-fund their enterprises during inception, they experience growth challenges due to limited fund availability. As per industry reports, about 50% of all social enterprises have reported that funding is their number one business challenge, while 31% face challenges inattracting senior, and middle management.

TiE Sustainability Summit plans to solve both the problems. TSS 2021 hosted by TiE Hyderabad is being held between Oct 4-6, 2021, through a virtual platform, will leverage its technology platform to facilitate funding of social enterprises. TiE is confident of funding at least 50 to 100 social enterprises during the summit, where the social entrepreneurs will be making a pitch to about 200 global investors. Through its technology platform TiE is confident of facilitating funding to a tune of $20 million in the short-term and about $100 million in the long term to promising social enterprises with ability to create a deep impact on human society, animals and nature. The invested will be made by social impact investors and large businesses who find a social enterprises with a promise of future growth and profits. TiE will play the role of a facilitator to help the most suitable social enterprises meet their potential funding partners.

Manohar Reddy, TSS Global Chair and President TiE Hyderabad said, “We see social enterprises as the change agents of the world and will play a key role in shaping the future of world economy. At TSS, we have designed a “Match Making’ Technology Platform for potential social impact investors to meet their prospective investees (social enterprises) who have the capability and promise to not only provide high return on investment, but also create a deep social impact.”

This thought was further echoed by Mahavir Sharma, Immediate past Global Chairman of the Board, TiE Global and Co-Founder, Rajasthan Angel, who said, “Social enterprises are the future unicorns of the world. They will be building a trillion dollar economy. At TiE we stay committed to fulfilling the needs of social entrepreneurs who are faced with the challenges of funding, attracting talent – we will be solving both these by partnering with social impact funds and large business to fund them to a tune of $100 million in the long term spread across a few phases based on business viability and ability to create the societal impact and generate high return on investment. Secondly, we will help them find suitable mentors and board members who can act as guiding force by providing strategic inputs, business modelling, go-to-market strategies, connect them with other ecosystem players.”
