With its advanced Dual 50MP Portrait Camera System featuring a 50MP front camera and a Sony IMX852 50MP rear camera, the realme 16 5G delivers an elevated AI Portrait Master experience tailored for a new generation of selfie-driven young users. The rear camera combines a large 1/2.93-inch sensor, an F1.8 aperture and autofocus capability to provide sharp detail and reliable image performance even in complex lighting conditions. Another standout feature is the industry’s first rear selfie mirror, which allows users to frame shots in real time when using the main camera, enhanced by an Aura Ring Flash for even lighting. With “Say Hi” gesture recognition and voice countdown, rear-camera selfies become more intuitive, interactive, and social.

realme 16 5G Launched in India with Slim Air Design, 7000mAh Battery – Best Smartphone Under ₹30,000

Paired with the same LumaColor IMAGE engine used on the realme 16 Pro, the phone delivers natural skin textures, accurate tones, balanced highlights, and true‑to‑life colors. For expressive photography, Vibe Master Mode introduces multiple atmospheric tone presets with customizable parameters, allowing users to create portraits with distinct moods and visual styles. Post-capture, AI Edit Genie enables one-tap AI editing through features such as AI Inspiration, AI StyleMe, and AI LightMe, simplifying professional-level photo enhancement. For video creation, AI Instant Clip automatically selects highlight moments from photos and videos to generate stylized short clips optimized for social sharing.

Commenting on the launch, Francis Wong, Chief Marketing Officer, realme India said, “The smartphone industry is undergoing a clear price reset, with the users expecting far greater value at every price band. With the launch of the realme 16 5G we are responding to this shift by bringing meaningful innovations like an industry-first selfie mirror, a massive 7000mAh battery and a slim, everyday design. This is about delivering not just innovation, but a reliable, long-term experience that truly aligns with how India buys and uses smartphones today

Kailash Lakhyani, Founder Chairman, AIMRA India said, “realme has consistently maintained a strong, collaborative relationship with AIMRA (All India Mobile Retailers Association)—which represents 1.50 lakh retailers in India and our nationwide retail community. realme continues to bring products that align well with the expectations of the mainline market."

With the launch of the realme 16 5G, the brand continues to strengthen its commitment to this important segment. The combination of an ultra-slim 'Air Design,' a massive 7000mAh battery, and a dual 50MP camera setup offers strong value for consumers. We believe the realme 16 5G will see high acceptance across mainline stores and deliver solid performance in the market. Live demos are available across mainline stores in India for a first-hand 'touch and feel' consumer experience.

Air Design: Flagship-Grade Camera Bar and Compact Engineering

The realme 16 5G adopts the new Air Design philosophy, optimizing visual balance, internal structure, and in-hand comfort to achieve true lightweight usability without sacrificing performance. The device features a Flagship-Grade Camera Bar with a horizontal rear camera layout, creating a symmetrical aesthetic while improving weight distribution. It ensures stability when placed flat on a surface and delivers a more balanced grip during horizontal use such as gaming or video recording.

The back panel showcases the Gleaming Wings Design, enabled by an industry‑first gradient texture process. Multi-colored particles form a blue-gold sparkling gradient that shifts dynamically with light, creating a feather-like visual flow from different angles. To enhance the tactile experience, the surface is finished with a fine sand texture and a curved anti-fingerprint coating, offering a soft touch while reducing smudges and wear during daily use.

To support this lightweight aesthetic, the realme 16 5G adopts an Air Compact Design enhanced by an AirCraft high‑density internal stacking structure. Together with a 6.57‑inch compact display and an ultra‑narrow 2.23mm bottom bezel, the device achieves a comfortable balance between immersive visuals and effortless handling. Through optimized component layout and the use of a high‑energy‑density graphite battery, the phone maintains an 8.1mm slim profile and a lightweight 183g body while still housing a 7000mAh Titan Battery.

Advanced Experience: Long-Life Power and All-Round Protection

The realme 16 5G extends its user‑centric design philosophy into everyday performance with a comprehensive advanced experience that prioritizes long-term battery health, fast charging efficiency and reliable durability. Powered by a 7000mAh Titan Battery supported by the first‑in‑segment Titan Long‑Life Algorithm, the realme 16 5G maintains at least 80% health after 1,600 full charge cycles, enabling up to 6 years of reliable usage and significantly extending device longevity and making this the best smartphone under ₹30,000. The device also offers a versatile and efficient charging experience with 60W Fast Charge, reaching 50 percent power in 30 minutes and a full charge in 74 minutes. For high-load scenarios such as gaming or navigation, Bypass Charging supplies power directly to the mainboard to reduce heat and maintain stable performance, while reverse charging allows the phone to act as a power source for other devices when needed.

For durability, the realme 16 5G achieves IP69 Pro-level water resistance, along with IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K certifications. This all‑scenario protection safeguards the device against dust, everyday splashes, high‑pressure water jets and even high‑temperature water exposure, giving users confidence across a wide range of daily and outdoor situations.

On the software side, the device runs realme UI 7.0 with the new Flux Engine, enabling smoother scrolling, faster response, and optimized performance through AI-based resource management, along with 72-month fluency protection for long-term reliability.

India Makes Cyber Safety App Mandatory on All Smartphones

India Makes Cyber Safety App Mandatory on All Smartphones

India’s government has ordered smartphone makers to preload its state-owned cyber safety app, Sanchar Saathi, on all new devices within 90 days, and users will not be able to delete it.

    What’s Happening

    • The Telecom Ministry issued an order on November 28, 2025 requiring smartphone makers (Apple, Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi, etc.) to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on all new phones.
    • Users cannot disable or delete the app, making it a permanent fixture on devices.
    • For phones already in the supply chain, manufacturers must push the app via software updates.

     Purpose of the App

    • Sanchar Saathi, launched in January 2025, is designed to combat cyber fraud and phone theft.
    • Government data shows it has already helped recover more than 700,000 lost phones, including 50,000 in October alone.
    • It also addresses telecom cyber security risks, such as duplicate or spoofed IMEI numbers.

    Why It’s Controversial

    • Privacy concerns: Since the app cannot be deleted, critics argue this undermines user choice and raises surveillance fears.
    • Apple’s resistance: Apple has previously clashed with Indian regulators over mandatory government apps (like the anti-spam app). This new directive is expected to spark another tussle.
    • Global implications: India is the world’s second-largest smartphone market with over 1.2 billion subscribers, so this mandate affects nearly every major phone manufacturer.

     Broader Context

    • India’s move reflects a global trend of governments tightening control over digital infrastructure to combat fraud and enhance cyber safety.
    • However, balancing security with privacy remains a major challenge. Similar debates have occurred in the EU and US around mandatory apps or backdoors in devices.

    Key Takeaways

    • Deadline: Smartphone makers have 90 days to comply.
    • Non-removable: The app will be permanent on devices.
    • Impact: Likely to trigger pushback from Apple and privacy advocates, but welcomed by those concerned about rising cyber fraud.
Sanchar Saathi works by giving users direct tools to report fraud and recover stolen phones, while the legal mandate forces smartphone makers to preload it permanently, raising privacy and compliance challenges.

🔧 How Sanchar Saathi Works Under the Hood

    • Fraud Detection Features
      • The app lets users report suspicious calls and SMS directly from their call/SMS logs in just a few taps.
      • It integrates with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) database to flag numbers linked to scams, spoofing, or misuse of telecom resources.
      • Supports English, Hindi, and 21 regional languages, ensuring accessibility across India’s diverse user base.
    • Phone Recovery Process
      • Users can register their device’s IMEI number on the Sanchar Saathi portal.
      • If a phone is lost or stolen, the app helps block the IMEI, making the device unusable on Indian networks.
      • Once recovered, the IMEI can be unblocked, restoring normal use.
      • Government data shows the app has already helped recover over 700,000 lost phones, including 50,000 in October 2025 alone.
    • Citizen Empowerment
      • The app is designed as a Jan Bhagidari (citizen participation) tool, encouraging users to actively report fraud and contribute to telecom security.
      • It acts as a bridge between users and telecom authorities, reducing delays in fraud reporting and recovery.

⚖️ Legal & Regulatory Implications for Smartphone Makers

    • Mandatory Preloading
      • The Telecom Ministry’s order (Nov 28, 2025) requires all smartphone makers (Apple, Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi, etc.) to pre-install Sanchar Saathi within 90 days.
      • For devices already in the supply chain, manufacturers must push the app via software updates.
    • Non-Removable Requirement
      • The app cannot be deleted or disabled, which raises privacy and user choice concerns.
      • This is expected to trigger pushback from Apple, which has previously resisted similar government mandates (like India’s anti-spam app).
    • Compliance Burden
      • Smartphone makers must adapt their software build processes to include the app permanently.
      • This could complicate global compliance strategies, as India’s rules diverge from norms in other major markets.
    • Market Impact
      • India is the world’s second-largest smartphone market with 1.2 billion subscribers, so compliance is unavoidable for global brands.
      • The move reflects India’s broader push to tighten control over digital infrastructure, balancing cyber safety with potential surveillance risks.

    🚨 Key Takeaway

    • Sanchar Saathi empowers users to fight fraud and recover stolen phones, but the mandatory, non-removable installation raises significant privacy, compliance, and global trade concerns.
    • For smartphone makers, this is not just a technical requirement—it’s a regulatory test case that could reshape how governments worldwide enforce digital safety mandates.

Comparative mandates for government or safety apps across regions
Region Mandate type Removability Scope of requirement Notable tensions
India Preload state-owned cyber safety app (Sanchar Saathi) on all new smartphones within 90 days Non-removable for users Applies to all major OEMs; updates pushed to existing devices in supply chain Likely clash with Apple; strong privacy pushback; framed as anti-fraud and IMEI control
EU No EU-wide mandate to preload a government app; relies on telecom/data protection rules N/A Security standards via GDPR/ePrivacy; device-level mandates uncommon Tension around privacy-by-design and app store gatekeeping, but no forced preload norm
US No federal mandate to preload a government safety app on consumer devices N/A Sectoral laws; carriers/apps handle spam and fraud; device backdoors opposed Long-standing resistance to mandated backdoors or compulsory apps on privacy grounds
China Government-linked safety/control apps may be required in specific contexts (work, education, local policies) Often non-optional within those contexts Strong platform compliance with state directives; app store governance aligned Lower friction due to centralized policy; broader content and data control expectations
Global OEMs Compliance with local requirements per market build Varies by market Separate ROMs/policies per region; risk of fragmentation Balancing privacy, brand policies (e.g., Apple), and regulatory divergence

    India’s directive in context

    • India’s telecom ministry ordered smartphone makers to preload the state-owned Sanchar Saathi app on all new devices within 90 days.
    • The app must be non-deletable and delivered via updates for devices already in the supply chain.
    • Government figures cite more than 700,000 devices recovered and 50,000 in October alone.
    • Major OEMs including Apple, Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi are covered, with expected friction from Apple.

Key differences with the EU and US

    • EU and US rely on regulatory frameworks (GDPR/ePrivacy in the EU; sectoral laws in the US) rather than mandating a government app.
    • Both regions emphasize privacy safeguards and oppose device-level backdoors.
    • No precedent for non-removable state apps on consumer phones, unlike India’s compulsory preload.

    China’s model and compliance dynamics

    • China features stronger alignment between platforms and state directives.
    • Government-linked apps are commonly required across specific sectors or contexts.
    • Tighter app store governance makes compliance smoother compared to India’s contested rollout.

    Practical OEM implications

    • Build variants: Maintain India-specific ROMs or configuration profiles to include a non-removable system app.
    • Policy alignment: Anticipate Apple’s scrutiny on non-removable government apps; plan for negotiations or OS-level allowances.
    • User trust: Transparent disclosures and on-device privacy notices can reduce backlash while meeting the mandate.
    • Support ops: Train support channels for IMEI blocking/unblocking workflows and fraud reporting flows tied to Sanchar Saathi.

Understanding the pain points of young mobile users, realme has crafted the GT 8 Pro’s photography philosophy, “Snap by No Rules,” which goes beyond conventional imaging standards to let every photograph reflect the user’s unique style. To bring this vision to life, the R&D teams from realme and RICOH IMAGING have implemented bespoke customizations, ensuring unmatched performance and a truly exceptional smartphone photography experience.

At the heart of the GT 8 Pro is a brand-new ultra-high transparency lens group, co-developed with RICOH IMAGING. Meeting RICOH GR optical standards, this lens delivers industry-leading anti-glare performance, higher resolving power, and minimal distortion, capturing every shot with remarkable clarity and purity.

The immersive RICOH GR Mode faithfully inherits RICOH GR’s philosophy and aesthetics. A simple swipe opens the customized interface, replicating fast startup speed just like RICOH GR cameras. realme CMO Chase Xu Talks with Kazunobu Saiki, General Manager of Camera Business Division at RICOH IMAGING COMPANY LTD.
    • realme and RICOH IMAGING to Announce Official Strategic Partnership on Smartphone Imaging, Teasing the Industry’s Deepest Imaging Collaboration in Street Photography.
    • Four years in the making, this imaging collaboration will debut with the GT 8 Pro series and boasts deep customization to enhance every shutter press for users and co-promote street photography culture.
realme, India’s most popular smartphone brand among young users, today announced a strategic partnership with RICOH IMAGING COMPANY LTD., set to officially launch on October 14 in Beijing, China.

After four years of preparation, this collaboration is positioned as one of the industry’s most profound imaging partnerships. To celebrate, the two companies released the “4 Years in One Snap” video, highlighting four years of co-engineering and teasing features of their first co-created product, designed specifically for the realme GT 8 Pro.

A Joint Journey Starting from Mobile User Pain Points

In the video, realme Vice President and CMO Chase Xu discussed with Kazunobu Saiki, General Manager of Camera Business Division at RICOH IMAGING COMPANY LTD., the elements that brought two brands together, which grounded on a shared understanding of user demands. realme saw that young people struggled with two main pain points in mobile photography: increasingly similar hardware and over-processed algorithms that stripped photos of authenticity. “People are getting tired of the same ‘perfect style’ photos. More and more, everyone wants to show their own style, instead of copying the same look.” Chase Xu explained.

The RICOH GR series has been known as a “street photography hero” because of its sharp quality, portability, and quick response. “That’s exactly what we value,” Xu said. Saiki echoed this: “RICOH Imaging and realme share a base of young, creative users. Our collaboration is not only about innovation in products, but also about culture to inspire a new generation to enjoy street photography and discover the beauty of everyday life.”

This shared spirit is why the two brands came together: to give young people tools that allow for authentic capture and personal expression, carrying the tradition of conventional camera into mobile photography.

The GT 8 Pro Brings GR Heritage to Young People’s Pocket

Through extensive customizations between realme and RICOH GR’s R&D teams, the GT 8 Pro offers an unprecedented imaging experience, achieving groundbreaking innovations in optical capabilities, color algorithms, imaging tones, and a tailor-made UI design that mimics the feel of a RICOH GR camera.

This device seamlessly blends 30 years of RICOH GR heritage, including its iconic film-like aesthetic and five classic image tones, with realme’s strengths in mobile imaging and profound insights into the preferences of current generations, creating a unique synergy that advances street photography culture through joint development and co-engineering. More than just a competition of specifications or uniform filters, it infuses mood and emotional warmth into every photo, encouraging young users to document their daily lives with authenticity.

    “Snap By No Rules”

This partnership isn’t just about a product, it’s about extending street photography culture into the mobile era. 4 Years in One Snap marks a milestone, encouraging young people to freely record and express their lives. “It’s a fresh, young way to take photos. You don’t wait or try to make the perfect shot but just press the button and capture the moment - Snap by No Rules,” said Xu

Through this collaboration, we hope that even those who don't usually use dedicated camera would experience snapshot photography with the GT 8 Pro, Saiki noted.

The journey now heads toward October 14, when realme and Ricoh GR’s partnership will make its official debut, ushering in a new era of mobile street photography.

India Becomes Apple’s Growth Engine as Sales Hit All-Time High

India Becomes Apple’s Growth Engine as Sales Hit All-Time High

Apple has just notched a major milestone in India: annual sales surged to a record $9 billion in the last fiscal year, marking a 13% year-over-year increase. This leap underscores how Apple’s strategic retail expansion and rising consumer demand are reshaping its footprint in one of the world’s fastest-growing tech markets.

    Key Drivers Behind the Surge
    • Retail Expansion: Apple opened new stores in Bengaluru and Pune, with upcoming outlets planned in Noida and Mumbai.
    • Localized Strategy: India was made a dedicated sales region in 2023, reflecting its growing importance to Apple’s global operations.
    • Affordability Push: Despite high import duties (iPhone 16 starts at ₹79,900 vs. $799 in the US), Apple boosted accessibility via:
      • Student discounts
      • Trade-in offers
      • Bank cashback partnerships

    Strategic Implications

    • Manufacturing Shift: Now, 1 in 5 iPhones is made in India, with Apple expanding production across five factories, including two new ones.
    • Market Share Growth: iPhones now hold ~7% of India’s smartphone market, seen as aspirational status symbols.
    • China Diversification: With geopolitical tensions and slowing growth in China, India is emerging as a retail and manufacturing hedge.

    Why It Matters

For a company facing plateauing global smartphone sales, India offers a rare blend of rising incomes, a tech-savvy middle class, and policy tailwinds. Apple’s retail-first, locally attuned strategy is not just about selling more devices—it’s about embedding itself into the fabric of India’s digital economy.

With 10-bit color depth for 1.07 billion hues and 2160Hz PWM dimming, the display provides rich visuals and superior eye protection for long hours of use.

    Segment-Leading 7000mAh Titan Battery

Glance and Google Cloud Join Forces to Build Consumer GenAI Experiences for Both Smartphones & Ambient TVs
    • Glance to leverage Google’s portfolio of AI models including Gemini and Imagen
    • To build generative AI -powered experiences on top of Glance’s Mobile and TV Surfaces generating a ‘personal internet’ for users
    • Glance to launch ‘Glance AI,’ a gen AI-powered platform, supercharging smartphones into AI phones
Consumer internet company, Glance, and Google Cloud today announced a strategic partnership to bring the power of generative AI (gen AI) to millions of Glance-enabled smartphones worldwide. Through this collaboration, Glance will leverage Google’s AI models to develop consumer-facing AI applications designed to enhance and enrich user experiences on smartphone lock screens and ambient TV screens.

Glance, a pioneer in delivering AI-powered smart lock screen experiences, currently powers more than 450 million Android-based smartphones worldwide. The company has an active user base of more than 300 million across India, Indonesia, Japan, the United States, and other countries. It is now building the next generation of Glance, which aims to turn every user’s lock screen into the center of their digital experiences, integrating their news, sports, games, entertainment, fashion, and shopping with gen AI to create a ‘personal internet’ for the user.

Glance and Google Cloud Join Forces to Build Consumer GenAI Experiences for Both Smartphones & Ambient TVs

Glance will leverage Google Cloud’s Gemini intelligence capabilities and Imagen’s state of the art image generation capabilities via Vertex AI to power Glance’s next-gen experiences. One of the first experiences is an immersive, gen AI-enabled commerce feature for the lock screen. This feature allows users to upload a single image (selfie or upload from gallery), which is then analyzed to infer their interests and preferences. Users can then use gen AI to generate personalized images that place them in relevant contexts, transforming their lock screen wallpapers. As users visualize themselves with various products, they can make real-time purchase decisions seamlessly from their lock screens.

“Our mission at Glance is to inspire users to become the best version of themselves through discovery-led experiences on surfaces powered by AI. We want to be the world’s largest consumer tech platform, reaching a billion screens by 2028, and our partnership with Google Cloud is key,” said Naveen Tewari, Founder & CEO of InMobi & Glance. “Our combined knowledge, AI capabilities, and expertise uniquely position Glance to deliver the next level of AI-driven experiences for smartphone users, supported by viable business models such as commerce and advertising.”

The partnership comes as Glance prepares to launch ‘Glance AI,’ a gen AI-powered platform designed to deliver immersive discovery experiences on both smartphone lock screens and TV ambient screens. To be launched in the U.S. market first, Glance AI aims to supercharge ordinary smartphones into AI phones through experiences that redefine content and commerce.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud added, “Generative AI technologies have the power to transform experiences for people around the world, and mobile phones are a key touchpoint. Glance can now harness Google Cloud’s cutting-edge gen AI technologies to develop groundbreaking applications across commerce, content, and more that will unlock new possibilities for customers.”

Launched in 2019, Glance is one of the earliest to unlock the potential of the smartphone lock screen, providing unique AI-driven personalized content discovery experiences. The Glance smart lock screen is delivered in partnership with OEMs and telcos. All functions are customizable, opt-in, and do not access user data, while maintaining user privacy. The platform relies on usage patterns to continually refine its recommendation engine and provide the best-in-class experience to the consumers.

PLI Scheme Drives Electronics Goods to Become 3rd on India's Top Export Items List

PLI Scheme Drives Electronics Goods to Become Third on India's Top Export Items List

In a first, electronics goods have become the fastest-growing segment in India's export basket. This growth is largely driven by the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has attracted global giants like Apple and Samsung to expand their production in India.

In the first eight months of FY25, electronics exports surged by 28% to $22.5 billion, moving up from the sixth position to the third spot among India's top export items. Smartphones alone accounted for a 45% increase, contributing significantly to this growth

As mentioned, electronics exports surged by 28% to $22.5 billion in the first 8 months of FY25, up from $17.66 billion during the same period in FY24. This remarkable growth has moved electronics goods from the sixth position to the third spot among India's top export items.

This development showcases India's growing capabilities in the electronics sector.

Smartphones have been a major driver of this growth, with exports increasing by 45% to $13.11 billion. Smartphones now account for 58% of total electronics exports, and this share is expected to reach 60-65% by the end of FY25.

The success of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has attracted global giants like Apple, Samsung, Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics to expand their production in India. This has significantly boosted smartphone exports.

Exports of consumer electronics, solar modules, desktops, and routers have also recorded significant growth.

With the establishment of semiconductor manufacturing capacities in India, electronics exports are expected to further accelerate. The Union Cabinet recently approved a proposal by Kaynes Semicon to set up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat, with an investment of Rs 3,307 crore.

These developments highlight India's growing capabilities in the electronics sector and its potential to become a major player in the global electronics market.

Meanwhile, engineering goods, valued at $56.24 billion, continue to be the largest export category. Petroleum products, with worth $36.56 billion, hold the second spot.

Google Starts Production of 1st Batch of Made-In-India Pixel 8 Smartphones

Google Starts Production of 1st Batch of Made-In-India Pixel 8 Smartphones

Google has started producing its Pixel 8 devices in India, marking a significant step in its commitment to local manufacturing. This move aligns with India's "Make in India" initiative and is expected to attract more global tech companies to invest in the region.

The Pixel 8 devices are being manufactured in collaboration with Dixon Technologies. Initially, only the base Pixel 8 model is being produced in India, with plans to expand production to other models in the future. This strategy mirrors Apple's approach, which has also shifted a significant portion of its iPhone assembly to India.

Initially, the production will be limited, but Google plans to assemble most of its new smartphones in India for both domestic and export markets within the next three years.

This move is part of a broader strategy to diversify its manufacturing locations and reduce dependency on China and Vietnam. The Pixel 8 devices are being produced in collaboration with Wowtek Technology India, a subsidiary of Bharat FIH, which is part of the Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn).

This initiative is expected to boost local manufacturing and create numerous job opportunities in India.

This development not only boosts local manufacturing but also positions India as a key player in the global tech supply chain.

The local assembly of Pixel 8 devices in India is likely to have a positive impact on pricing. By manufacturing in India, Google can benefit from reduced import duties and lower production costs, which could translate to more competitive pricing for consumers. Additionally, this move aligns with the Indian government’s incentives for local manufacturing, potentially leading to further cost savings.

However, the exact impact on pricing will depend on various factors, including the scale of production, supply chain efficiencies, and market demand. Overall, consumers in India might see more affordable Pixel 8 devices compared to previous models.

Samsung Pushes Apple to 2nd Spot To Get Back on #1 in the World's Top Smartphone Maker

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, smartphone shipments are expected to reach 1.20 billion units in 2024, growing 2.8% year over year. This growth is followed by further expansion in the low single digits through 2028.

In the first quarter of 2024 (1Q24), global smartphone shipments increased 7.8% year over year to 289.4 million units. This marks the third consecutive quarter of shipment growth, signaling that a recovery is well underway in the smartphone market. While the industry is not completely out of the woods, macroeconomic challenges remain in many markets.

    • Data are preliminary and subject to change.
    • Company shipments are branded device shipments and exclude OEM sales for all vendors.
    • The "Company" represents the current parent company (or holding company) for all brands owned and operated as a subsidiary.
    • Figures represent new shipments only and exclude refurbished units.

"As expected, smartphone recovery continues to move forward with market optimism slowly building among the top brands," said Ryan Reith, group vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. "While Apple managed to capture the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully reasserted itself as the leading smartphone provider in the first quarter. While IDC expects these two companies to maintain their hold on the high end of the market, the resurgence of Huawei in China, as well as notable gains from Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus, and vivo will likely have both OEMs looking for areas to expand and diversify. As the recovery progresses, we're likely to see the top companies gain share as the smaller brands struggle for positioning."

"The smartphone market is emerging from the turbulence of the last two years both stronger and changed," said Nabila Popal, research director with IDC's Worldwide Tracker team. "Firstly, we continue to see growth in value and average selling prices (ASPs) as consumers opt for more expensive devices knowing they will hold onto their devices longer. Secondly, there is a shift in power among the Top 5 companies, which will likely continue as market players adjust their strategies in a post-recovery world. Xiaomi is coming back strong from the large declines experienced over the past two years and Transsion is becoming a stable presence in the Top 5 with aggressive growth in international markets. In contrast, while the Top 2 players both saw negative growth in the first quarter, it seems Samsung is in a stronger position overall than they were in recent quarters."
