Seedstars and Sai Srushti Group Open Applications for the Biggest On-Campus Talent Incubator in India

Seedstars and Sai Srushti Group open applications for the biggest on-campus talent incubator in India

Seedstars and Sai Srushti Group partner up to launch Seedstars Academy Bangalore

Seedstars and xMultiplied-advized Sai Srushti Group (SSG) officially announce their partnership to bring Seedstars Academy to India, launching Seedstars Academy Bangalore. The digital and impact incubator is set to train thousands of local talents with digital and entrepreneurial skills that can help people either launch their own startups or become software engineers. Interested startups can now apply here: https://seedstarsacademybangalore.softr.app/bangalore-academy.

With 86% of professionals estimated to look for new jobs in the next 2 years, the Great Indian talent war is indeed on. Coupled with the emergence of metaverse and Web3, the demand for specialized roles is also expected to rise by almost 98% in the next five years, increasing employment opportunities to 12 million specialized jobs.

While data engineers, programmers, and developers continue to be at the forefront of digital transformation, new roles are springing up rapidly. Unfortunately, the disconnect between the world of academia and industry is becoming more evident today. One of the key reasons behind this problem is that while there are a large number of young graduates, the youth are not aware of the required skills that the new industries want. So, there is currently a wide skill development and employment gap.

Seedstars Academy was created to address the skills gap in both founders and talent pool. The talent incubator equips participants with 21st-century digital and entrepreneurial skills. It aims to prepare emerging and frontier market talents for the future of work and increase the number of founders with the skills to build high-growth companies.

The educational journey builds on the expertise of SSG and the implementation capabilities of 01Edu and Seedstars who jointly trained over 140,000 talents across the globe. Graduating software engineers have a 100% success rate of securing employment at high-profile tech firms including Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Facebook.

The academy will train 300 talents yearly on-campus and equip them with digital and entrepreneurial skills. It follows an innovative-yet-proven curriculum and pedagogy based on collective intelligence to recode learning and train full-stack developers.

Participants require no previous experience or degrees and can end the Seedstars Academy journey by working as coders for local or international companies or starting their own companies.

The impact that Seedstars Academy would create is job creation through an increase in high-growth companies; increased employment for youth in stable, decent jobs through upskilling from the program; and contribution to SDGs through an increase in innovative ventures focused on tackling them.

“We are thrilled to launch such an impactful partnership with SSG around tertiary education in India. Together, we believe we can unlock the potential of countless talents in the country,” shared Pierre-Alain Masson, Co-Founder of Seedstars.

Seedstars Academy Bangalore invites all interested startups to send in applications here: https://seedstarsacademybangalore.softr.app/bangalore-academy.

Financial Times and Seedstars Announce 6 Global Winners of FTxSDG Challenge

Seedstars Co-CEO Alisée de Tonnac and the winning startups of the FTxSDG Challenge

Financial Times and Seedstars announce this year’s six global winners of the FTxSDG Challenge: Anthem, India (Quality Education); Duhqa, Kenya (Reduced Inequalities); Medl, Trinidad and Tobago (Good Health & Wellbeing); Pinky Promise, India (Gender Equality); Trii, Columbia (Good Jobs & Economic Growth); and SafEarth Clean Technologies, India (Climate Action). The winners will be accelerated to the Seedstars International Fund where they’ll have the chance to secure up to $500K in funding.

Watch the finale replay here: https://ftxchallenge.com/ftxseedstars-old/agenda.

In a partnership with Seedstars, the Swiss-based private group with a mission to impact people’s lives in emerging markets, and Financial Times, one of the world’s leading business news organizations, the FTxSDG Challenge was created to empower promising, impact-driven startups and entrepreneurs with learning and funding opportunities. The competition was also made possible with the School of Management Fribourg (HEG-FR).

The focus on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aims to bring awareness to global problems, while also empowering entrepreneurs who are creating solutions that can address these issues.

Since 2013, the Seedstars World Competition has grown to be the largest startup competition in emerging markets, but the pandemic has led to the online adaptation of the competition for the past two years.

Opening the FTxSDG Challenge call for applications to all startups and innovative entrepreneurs around the globe, over 4,500 applications were received. Narrowing that down, the Seedstars and Financial Times team have selected 30 finalists to compete for the six global winners spots for each SDG. The full list of finalists can be found here.

From there, the startup finalists got to pitch their ideas to experts in their respective SDG categories. You can view the full list of the jury members here. The results of the deliberations for this year’s global winners are the following:
  1. Quality Education Winner
Anthem, India - Anthem is a simple, but very powerful SaaS tool built to keep the needs of mid-sized educational institutions in mind. It helps automate their four fundamental functions – fee collection, expense management, admissions, and communication.
  2. Reduced Inequalities Winner
  3. Duhqa, Kenya - For a small shop selling consumer products, they struggle to get a one-stop shop for their procurement needs, financing, and logistics. Duhqa is solving this problem and provides a tech solution that enables them to shop from manufacturers, get financing, and have all items delivered to their shop in under 6 hours.
  4. Good Health & Wellbeing Winner
Medl, Trinidad and Tobago - There are millions of premature deaths by non-communicable diseases. Most premature deaths can be avoided by medications but 1 in 2 prescriptions are never filled: medication is confusing, time-consuming, inaccessible, and expensive. Medl's end-to-end prescription platform, to-your-door delivery, and continuing patient management scraps the traditional pharmacy model to transform the patient experience for the $75bn LatAm pharmaceutical market.
  5. Gender Equality Winner
Pinky Promise, India - Pinky Promise provides high-quality, automated reproductive healthcare to every woman in the world. Their gynecologist-verified chatbot walks a woman from her symptom, all the way to an answer for that symptom. Issue-specific chatrooms on our app help women connect with each other anonymously so they can ask follow-up questions and find support.
  6. Good Jobs & Economic Growth Winner
Trii, Columbia - Local brokers make it difficult for 99% of the population to access the stock market and small investors were banned from the game. Trii is a Colombian Fintech partnered with the Colombian Stock Exchange to develop the first trading app in the country. They can serve millions and make the local stock market accessible and empower small investors.
  7. Climate Action Winner
SafEarth Clean Technologies, India - Renewable energy is today the cheapest source of energy around the world, yet 9 out of 10 people don’t end up making this decision. As well as 67% of all distributed solar plants are not able to meet basic quality checks. From the end-user perspective, the transition to renewable energy is very complicated and prone to errors. Safearth helps in getting these users the right solar plants at the lowest possible price with zero errors.
Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Seedstars Alisée de Tonnac shared -
We’ve been doing these competitions for years now but I am always in awe of the vision and impact that the startups are making. I’m proud to announce this year’s winners who are helping push forward progress in the different sustainable development goals.
Financial Times Business Development Associate Noor Hafez also expressed excitement for the winners, “We're so delighted with how well the FTxSDG challenge has gone! This first collaboration with Seedstars allowed us to reach so many people around the world and open up our challenge to startups for the first time ever. We were also able to focus our challenge on just emerging markets for the first time. We heard so many insightful and innovative ideas in the space of 5 days.”

The FTxSDG Challenge finale included public sessions “SDGs in emerging markets: can entrepreneurship be the solution?” with Seedstars Co-CEOs Alisée de Tonnac and Pierre-Alain Masson and Head of Business Development & FT Talent Director Virginia Stagni as well as the live session on “Race for Tomorrow: the global fight to respond to climate change” with Financial Times Moral Money Editor, Simon Mundy.

UN Women Showcase Asia-Pacific Care Industry Startups in Online Demo Day

Meet the most promising startups that are transforming care work into inclusive opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region

The UN Women Care Accelerator programme concluded with an online demo day, showcasing 13 Asia-Pacific startups with a focus on developing solutions for the Care-Economy. For more information about the startups, visit careaccelrator.seedstars.com.

Women in the Asia-Pacific are seen as the center of the family, responsible for taking care of the household and taking on a disproportionate share of unpaid care and domestic work responsibilities. Research shows that unpaid care also emerges as a critical reason why women do not participate in paid work. This is especially prevalent in the Asia-Pacific region, which is the only region globally in which women’s participation in the labour force has been declining the past 10 years.

The accelerator aimed to identify and support entrepreneurs who are creating innovative solutions that help to make care services more accessible, affordable and increase the quality of child and elderly care services provided. In turn, these solutions have the potential to create decent work opportunities for caregivers and provide an opportunity for many women and their families to have a caregiving solution allowing them to fully take part in the workforce.

The UN Women Care Accelerator provided enterprises with a 4-month intensive training programme to build more sustainable and gender-inclusive business strategies. At the demo day, all participating startups had the opportunity to present their business strategies to potential investors and care ecosystem stakeholders such as mentors, investors, speakers, NGOs and international organizations.

“The Care Accelerator has really opened our eyes to the possibilities that ‘Care Entrepreneurship’ can offer to create decent employment opportunities and also improve affordability, access and quality of care services. However it will require strong collaboration with policymakers and corporates alike to create an inclusive care economy.” said Katja Freiwald Regional Programme Manager WeEmpowerAsia UN Women.

The demo day is the official culmination of the UN Women Care Accelerator program, presented by UN Women, WeEmpowerAsia, European Union, Bopinc and co-organized by Seedstars, where each startup got to pitch their product and share their progress. After the pitching, all the companies also participated in 1:1 meetings with investors and partners.

Demo day featured the following startups from the UN Women Care Accelerator programme:
  • LoveCare saves clients time by matching them with the perfect carer that fits their needs and preferences in less than 5 minutes.
  • Kiddocare gives the tools to millions of freelance caregivers and nurses throughout Asia to better care for their clients while helping them grow their businesses through technology.
  • Pillar Health develops highly scalable tools that help independent care providers work more efficiently and operate their care services more effectively.
  • Nannyz matches nannies and babysitters with families in the area.
  • Kiidu is a care platform to find the most suitable nannies and caregivers in Thailand.
  • Aseana Caregivers connects parents with trained, vetted and certified Malaysian babysitters, for personalized on-demand childcare.
  • Carer provides caregivers the most comprehensive in-home nursing help and guidance.
  • Ayat Care facilitates empowerment without boundaries by providing care and coaching exactly where it is needed and beneficial.
  • Bihani Social Venture provides age inclusive services with a focus on mental and physical well-being for older people in Nepal.
  • Mobiva empowers older people to live independently longer, healthier and safer while providing peace of mind to their families.
  • JobNukkad is an online portal in India that helps families connect with caregivers in their locality without paying commission to an agency: it is cheap and fast.
  • TiTLi unlocks livelihood opportunities for millions of women by helping them become skilled early childhood educators and caregivers.
  • Angels & I provides a proprietary educational curriculum and certification for nannies to take care and educate children at home.
"We’ve been working with the founders on a weekly basis for the past four months and it’s so rewarding to see this clear business growth as well as their progress in becoming more gender inclusive, as reflected in their pitches. A special thank you goes to our mentors, who have been supporting the founders through this intense, but extremely valuable journey," said Seedstars Acceleration Program Manager Eugenia Schevchenko.

After two pitching sessions the jury, consisting of: Christina Teo, Chief Builder at she1K; Konstantin Hapkemeyer, Investment Manager Africa & Asia at Seedstars; Katja Freiwald Regional Programme Manager at WeEmpowerAsia; and Paul Ark, Partner & Head of ESG at Gobi Partners, decided on two grant winners. Kiddocare and Lovecare will receive USD 5,000 each to support the building of a more inclusive care industry in Asia-Pacific. The grant was provided by WeEmpowerAsia and Seedstars.
