From Pilots to Profit: NTT Data’s 2026 Global AI Report Shows How Top Performers Turn AI Vision Into Value

From Pilots to Profit: NTT Data’s 2026 Global AI Report Shows How Top Performers Turn AI Vision Into Value

NTT DATA, a global leader in AI, digital business and IT services, today released the 2026 Global AI Report: A playbook for AI leaders. The playbook is based on the company’s new benchmark research and reveals how “AI leaders” are separating from competitors through strategy and execution.

The analysis is based on a survey of 2,567 senior executives across 35 countries and 15 industries. Only 15% of participating organizations qualified as “AI leaders,” defined by clear AI strategies, mature operating models and focused execution. These leaders report significantly higher revenue growth and profit margins than other organizations.

AI accountability now belongs in the boardroom and demands an enterprise-wide agenda, said Yutaka Sasaki, President and CEO, NTT DATA Group. Our research shows that a small group of AI leaders already are using AI to differentiate, grow and reinvent how humans and machines create value together.

Strategy

Leaders treat AI as a core growth engine and rewire their strategy accordingly.
  • Strategic alignment and speed: AI leaders win by tightly aligning AI with business strategy and turning strategic focus and speed into outsized financial returns.
  • Focused end-to-end approach: Top performers focus on high-value domains that unlock disproportionate economic value and redesign workflows end to end.
  • Flywheel effect: These front-runners create a cycle where initial investments fuel early success that drives reinvestment for further growth.
  • Core reinvention: Growth leaders rebuild core applications with embedded AI rather than limiting themselves to surface-level add-ons.

Execution

AI leaders differentiate through resilient foundations, empowered humans, hardwired adoption and governance, and expert partners.
  • Secure at scale: AI leaders build scalable and secure stacks, localize or relocate AI infrastructure for private/sovereign AI, and invest to eliminate infrastructure bottlenecks.
  • Expert-first AI: These front-runners use AI to amplify the impact of experienced, highly skilled employees rather than replace them.
  • Change that sticks: Top performers treat adoption as a company-wide change program and adopt constructive change management to reduce resistance.
  • Governed for scale: Leading organizations centralize AI governance, formalize enterprise-wide oversight, and empower dedicated Chief AI Officers (CAIOs) to own risk and align innovation.
  • Partner-powered growth: Best-in-class players lean on strategic external collaborators and are open to outcome-based gain-sharing models that accelerate AI value.
Once AI and business strategies are aligned, the single most effective move is to pick one or two domains that deliver disproportionate value and redesign them end-to-end with AI,” said Abhijit Dubey, CEO and CAIO, NTT DATA, Inc. Supporting this focused, end-to-end approach with strong governance, modern infrastructure and trusted partners is how today’s AI leaders are turning pilots into profits and pulling ahead of the market.

About the Research

The survey was conducted between September and October 2025. Respondents include C-suite, senior executives and other senior staff from enterprises spanning technology, manufacturing, banking, financial services, healthcare, consumer and other sectors.

  • Expansion of AI innovation center and deployment of Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) to fast-track India’s technological leadership
  • MIST submarine cable system to directly connect India, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand
  • Launch of NTT DATA’s largest data center campus in India to power digital transformation

NTT DATA, a global digital business and technology services leader, today announced a series of strategic initiatives reinforcing its continued commitment to the Indian market. Among these, the company announced the commissioning of its Malaysia, India, Singapore Transit (MIST) submarine cable system by June 2025. MIST is an 8,100-kilometer cable that can carry over 200 terabits per second (Tbps). It is one of the largest cables in Asia, and will connect Malaysia, India, Singapore and Thailand.

It marks a milestone as NTT DATA’s first cable system to establish direct connectivity to and from India, enhancing global connectivity and adding critical infrastructure for the country’s rapidly growing digital economy. MIST was connected to NTT DATA’s Mumbai landing station in February 2023 and its Chennai landing station in May 2023.

NTT has been growing and investing in India for over a decade. Adding to that, NTT DATA has now opened its biggest data center campus in India, a facility that can hold over 500 MW of power, when fully operational. The company operates almost two-thirds of its data centers in India on renewable energy. It is committed to using 100% renewable energy by 2030 in all its data centers and operations. Featuring advanced infrastructure, including an underground tunnel for seamless connectivity and cooling technologies, the campus highlights safety, innovation and sustainability.

As the third-largest data center provider globally, and the largest in India, NTT DATA is scaling its global capacity from over 1,500 MW to exceed 2,000 MW. With significant growth in India, where it holds leading market share, it aims to add 400 MW more in the coming years. NTT DATA is the only data center service provider with over 200 MW of AI load already deployed worldwide. While the world is talking about being AI-ready, NTT DATA is AI-experienced.

NTT DATA also announced that it is upgrading and expanding its Innovation Centre in Bengaluru, India. The center will focus on AI, digital twin and quantum computing projects. With this, the company has 11 global innovation centers across 11 countries that will boost hiring of specialized talent to manage projects for global companies, driving AI-led technology solutions, particularly with agentic AI.

Dedicated to boosting connectivity, NTT’s Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN), a next-generation All-Photonics Network (APN) technology has been used to interconnect data centers in the Mumbai region, facilitating higher performance data transmission at lower costs. IOWN’s first information and communication processing infrastructure in India is in its early implementation stages. It aims to provide fast, high-capacity network access using photonics-based technologies. NTT is working hard to make this technology available to organizations globally by 2030, with an aim to support the growing AI driven global data volume which is likely to reach a capacity of 175 zettabytes by 2025 - nearly triple from 2020 to 2025, as per IDC’s ‘Data Age 2025’ paper. It elaborates - if we were to store 175 zettabytes on DVDs, the stack of DVDs would be long enough to circle Earth 222 times.

“India is key in our global strategy, fuelled by its rapid economic and digital expansion. We’re proud to say that NTT DATA has powered the IT infrastructure in India and globally, notably in data center capacity. Currently, India is one of our top 10 revenue-generating markets,” said Akira Shimada, President and CEO, NTT. “We are investing 8 trillion Yen (US$59 billion*) globally over 5 years from FY2023 to FY2027 into growth areas, including data centers and AI. We are committed to delivering our integrated full-stack proposition to our clients across Data Centers, Network, Applications, BPaaS, Managed Services, Cloud, Security, and AI solutions.”

"We are proud to accelerate India's digital future with the commissioning of MIST—the latest milestone in strengthening global digital highways that connect new markets and power AI innovation. Our MIST cable landing at the Gateway of India, Mumbai truly serves as India's gateway to the world," said Abhijit Dubey, CEO, NTT DATA, Inc. “Our USD 3 billion investment in India's digital infrastructure over the last decade reflects our confidence in the region's exceptional talent and robust tech ecosystem. We remain committed to expanding our presence and strategic investments in the country that will elevate India to one of our top five markets within the next three years."

“The Indian economy is currently in a growth phase both as a top market and a hub of innovation, talent and opportunity,” said Avinash Joshi, CEO, India, NTT DATA. “Over the years we have grown through acquisitions and currently have 3000 clients in India. We will continue to build on this momentum to drive transformation across key industries such as banking, manufacturing and automotive. We are witnessing an era of evolutionary tech and are confident in our ability to robustly meet the demand in the areas of technology solutions, data centers, infrastructure management, and applications.”

NTT to Invest Estimated $1.5 Billion in Data Centres in India

Japanese tech major NTT on Wednesday said a significant part of its USD 7 billion global commitment for data centres business would be spent in India over the next four years.

The company also feels that there will be margin compression issues for the data centres business in India as capacity supply goes up along with an increase in competition, NTT's country chief executive for global data centres and cloud infrastructure, Sharad Sanghi, told PTI.

In the last few months, a string of corporates, including the Adani Group, Hiranandanis and Reliance Industries have announced investments in data centres, on the back of regulatory moves like data sovereignity which makes it incumbent upon financial institutions to house their data locally.

"India is the fastest growing region for NTT and a substantial amount of the USD 7 billion commitment will be invested here," Sanghi said.

When asked how the USD 7 billion investment would be made, Sharad Sanghi said "the overall investments would be spread across four regions that the company operates in". This would mean that more than USD 1.5 billion or nearly Rs 11,000 crore would come into India.

The company, whose revenues have been growing at 30 per cent every year, is targeting to more than double its capacity in the next three years through the investments, Sanghi said.

Its overall capacity, which stands at 1.2 million sq ft at present spread across Mumbai, Noida, Chennai and Bengaluru, will go up by 1.5 million sq ft, he said.

The company is looking at going to newer locations as well and also adding to its land bank to house the facilities, he said.

Demand is coming from global hyperscalers like the cloud service providers, data localisation requirements and as a greater number of enterprises move to the cloud, Sanghi said.

The Adanis have committed Rs 70,000 crore for data centres in Andhra Pradesh, Hiranandanis have committed Rs 14,000 crore and RIL has announced a partnership with Microsoft for the same.

Sanghi said the high quantum of investments in the business will change the characteristic of the market, which has so far been dictated by suppliers, from 2021 onward once the capacities come on board.

While the revenues will keep growing because of the market opportunity, the supply increase can cause a short term blip in profitability by narrowing operating margins, he said, stressing that this will not last for long time.

NTT is confident of guarding its business and growing in the face of competition, he asserted, adding data centres is its core business and clients, who sign long-term contracts, partner with companies which are not into different businesses like power and realty.

There will be a consolidation in the industry due to the dynamics and the smaller entities may find it difficult to survive, Sanghi said, making it clear that NTT does not look at mergers and acquisition as a strategy but may move in opportunistically for the buys.

He also made it clear that aggressive pricing may not work for companies, pointing out to two incidents of companies who tried getting business using this strategy going bust.

Sanghi pitched for an improvement in power supply in Noida, Chennai and Bengaluru, saying two hours of power down time per week is a worry.

NTT on Wednesday announced the launch of an integrated division to look over the global data centre opportunity.

CloudHedge's another flagship product 'Transform' enables refactoring of applications sitting in a Data Center or Cloud. It automates containerization of application based on workloads. The other flagship tool 'Transform', which has AI-based predictive monitoring, enables refactoring of applications sitting in a Data Center or Cloud by automating containerization of application based on workloads.

Founded in 2017, by Abhijit Joshi and Asawari Joshi, who are both alumni of New Jersey Institute of Technology, CloudHedge is headquartered in India and has a global presence in Singapore, Netherlands, and U.S. The startup has deep partnerships with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform, RedHat and IBM Cloud.
