Meta Recruits Four More OpenAI Researchers to Boost Superintelligence Team

Meta Recruits Four More OpenAI Researchers to Boost Superintelligence Team

Meta has reportedly hired four more researchers from OpenAI, reported The Information. This intensifies the ongoing talent war in the AI industry. The new hires are:
  • Shengjia Zhao
  • Jiahui Yu
  • Shuchao Bi
  • Hongyu Ren
These researchers are joining Meta’s ambitious Superintelligence team, which is being led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI.

Why This Matters

  • Strategic Timing: The hires come shortly after the underwhelming launch of Meta’s Llama 4 AI models, which reportedly didn’t meet CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s expectations.
  • High-Stakes Recruitment: Reports suggest Meta has been offering compensation packages worth up to $100 million, with some rumors even citing figures as high as $300 million over four years for top-tier talent.
  • OpenAI’s Response: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has downplayed the impact, stating that “none of our best people” have left, though internal concerns have reportedly been raised about the aggressive poaching.
This move is part of Meta’s broader push to dominate the next wave of artificial general intelligence (AGI). The company has already brought in other OpenAI researchers from its Zurich office and is reportedly coordinating recruitment through a private WhatsApp group dubbed “Recruiting Party”.

Meta is reportedly offering staggering compensation packages to lure top AI researchers from OpenAI, with figures reaching up to $300 million over four years for select hires.

Compensation Details

  • Total Package: Up to $300 million over four years for top-tier researchers.
  • First-Year Payout: Over $100 million in some cases, primarily through stock grants that vest immediately.
  • Structure: Not a simple cash signing bonus—packages include a mix of salary, equity, and early vesting stock options.
  • Eligibility: These offers are reportedly limited to a small number of leadership roles within Meta’s new Superintelligence team.
  • Meta’s Pitch: In addition to money, Meta is promising unlimited compute resources, including access to high-demand GPUs, which are critical for cutting-edge AI research.

Industry Impact

  • OpenAI’s Response: CEO Sam Altman confirmed the $100M+ offers but claimed Meta didn’t get their “top people.” OpenAI is now recalibrating its own compensation to retain talent.
  • Meta’s Strategy: CEO Mark Zuckerberg is personally leading the recruitment drive, aiming to build a team that can deliver on AGI ambitions after Llama 4’s underwhelming performance.

Mark Zuckerberg and his Wife Pledge $25 Mn for Researching COVID-19 Treatments

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the philanthropic arm of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, has announced plans to team up with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to donate USD 25 million to a research fund exploring possible COVID-19 treatments.

"I'm really proud to share that (The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is) going to be joining Gates and others to put together something they're calling the therapeutics accelerator to fight coronavirus," Chan told "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King.

Chan told King that their goal is "to fund a group to screen all the drugs that we know have potential effects against coronavirus."

Zuckerberg said one drug can often be used to treat multiple diseases.

"You can basically take all those drugs that have already been screened as safe and test them to see if they might also have a positive impact for either preventing the coronavirus or reducing the symptoms and making it less damaging," he said.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is sinking the cash into an effort, run by Zuckerberg's mentor Bill Gates, that is exploring new possible antiviral drugs that could protect people from the disease.

The donation is among the biggest single grants to an outside organization ever given by CZI, established in 2015.

CZI's gift is the second biggest tech philanthropy donation for the coronavirus that has been publicly unveiled, falling short of only the Gates Foundation's donation to the same therapeutics fund.

The contribution from Zuckerberg and his wife comes after the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation launched the COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator earlier in March. Mastercard and charity foundation Wellcome are also partnering with Bill & Melinda Gates as part of the initiative, which started with USD 125 million in seed funding at its launch.

The goal of the project is to develop affordable treatments to COVID-19 that can be distributed at scale.

The accelerator will evaluate new and repurpose existing drugs to for the treatment of COVID-19 patients, and hopes to use its research to fight other viral pathogens in the long term as well. The COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator will also be working with the World Health Organization on the project. PTI SHK

Soon You'll Able To Shop on Facebook Using Bitcoin

The new-age virtual currenices aka cryptocurrencies like bitcoin could help improve Facebook in the future, Mark Zuckerberg has said in his traditional Facebook post.

In his public post, the founder of Facebook said that technology, instead of decentralising the power, is centralised to few big companies including Facebook itself.

Zuckerberg further said that he would look into the use of new technology to stop it being quite so centralised.

And, one of those technologies is bitcoin. Referring to cryptocurrency he said, "There are important counter-trends to this –like encryption and cryptocurrency — that take power from centralized systems and put it back into people’s hands. But they come with the risk of being harder to control. I’m interested to go deeper and study the positive and negative aspects of these technologies, and how best to use them in our services".

The important summary of Zuckerberg's post suggested that in order to counteract the de-centralisation of internet, he would look at bitcoin and other technology. And, the mention of cryptocurrency is might be a reference to blockchain, the technology that powers new kinds of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin. That allows information – like who owns what bitcoins – to be distributed across a range of computers in "de-centralized" way, rather than centralised in one specific place.

Few days back, Peter Thiel, a PayPal co-founder and one of the early Facebook investor, has bought millions of dollars in bitcoin, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Facebook To Launch New Tool For Blood Donors In India

On October 1, which is National Blood Donors day, Facebook will launch new tool to connect blood donors and blood banks with those seeking them, announced facebook in a press release.

There is a shortage of safe blood in India, and Facebook says sometimes patients and families needing blood will reach out on social media networks to locate donors. In an effort to address this, Facebook is introducing new features to help donors, patients, and hospitals connect more easily. These will include the option for nearby donors to be notified of blood requests.

Starting October 1, Facebook users in India will be able to start signing up to be blood donors. To help encourage participation, Facebook will show a message in News Feed or people can edit their Profiles to sign up. All information will remain private and set to "only me" by default, but people can choose to share their donor status on their timelines. This will first be available on Android and mobile web, as these are the most widely-used platforms in India.

Facebook blood donor

When individuals or organisations are in need of blood, they will be able to create a special interactive post requesting the same. Generating this post will notify donors in the area who can then contact the requester over Facebook, Messenger or on WhatsApp. As of December 2016, Facebook had 166 million monthly active users in India.

Moreover, over the time Facebook will roll out more tools in stages. If someone or a clinic needs blood, they can create a special post that includes information about where the blood is needed, contact information, and an option to identify the blood group required and an anecdote about the patient. When that request is posted, those nearby who have indicated they’re willing to donate blood will be sent a Facebook notification and given the option to respond through Messenger, WhatsApp, or a call. Donors’ details are kept private unless they choose to disclose it to the person in need of blood.

According to Zuckerberg, Indian product developer Hema Budaraju's own experience led to the development of this feature. "This issue is personal to Hema, whose father was diagnosed with cancer five years ago and lost so much blood during chemotherapy that he had to have a transfusion every day for a week," Zuckerberg said in his status update.

In designing the new features, Facebook says it worked with non-profit organizations, health industry experts, potential donors, and those who have used Facebook to find blood donors.

People in India can go to facebook.com/donateblood to learn more and sign-up to be a blood donor.

Facebook Launches ‘Disputed’ Tag To Fight ‘Fake News’

Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook has kept its word and finally launched the much-awaited 'disputed' tag to fight 'fake news' on its famous social networking site. Though currently only active in the United States, the initiative will see Facebook tagging stories that are deemed false by facts with a disputed tag. The stories reported fake by the Facebook users will be checked for factual accuracy by non-partisan third-party organisations like Politifact and Snopes.

The social networking site has also added a question on its help centre page explaining in detail how they will be marking a news as disputed on the platform. The section mentions that the feature isn't yet available to everyone but it is still unclear about how many users currently have access to the tool.

The new tool first came to limelight on Twitter, when excited users shared the screenshots which identified links to websites that are infamous for producing misinformation and false stories.

Facebook finally decided to launch a crackdown on fake news stories after 13 years of its launch in the light of the massive backlash it received in November last year that the so-called fake news on the platform had influenced the outcome of the US presidential election. In December, Facebook decided to do some damage control by announcing that it has joined hands with fact checkers that are signatories of the journalism non-profit Poynter’s International Fact Checking Code of Principles and included ABC News, FactCheck.org,Snopes and Politifact.

News stories which are reported fake by Facebook users will be forwarded to these fact checkers for verification of facts. If upon observation, the fact-checkers agree that the story does contain some false facts which can be misleading, they will then appears in Facebook's News Feed with a "disputed” tag, along with a link to a corresponding article explaining why it has been given the tag. Such stories will also rank lower in the News Feed and each time a user shares the story on their timeline, they will receive a warning making them aware of the disputed tag allotted to the story.

While for now the tool has only been launched in the US, but Facebook is continuously making efforts to make it available in every region that the social networking site is currently active in. A special focus is being allocated to Europe amid threats from the European Union on reducing the spread of misinformation. Facebook recently announced fact checking partnerships in France and Germany in the light of the coming elections in each of the country.

Nobody Knows But Facebook’s Wi-Fi Has Been In India For Over A Year

Last week, we reported how Facebook has decided not to bring its unmanned solar-powered drone, Aquila, to the Indian subcontinent, leaving quite a few people disappointed. In order to pump up their spirits and improve the company's position in the country, Facebook decided to divert the focus from Aquila to its Express Wifi project by spreading news in the media that the social media giant has now started testing the service in India. But, here's the real news, Facebook has already been testing the service in rural India since last year. This was right around the same phase that the Mark Zuckerberg led competition was facing the flack in India for its Net neutrality initiative.

What is Express Wifi project?

Express Wifi is going to allow users to purchase internet from local data providers. So, it isn't a free Wi-Fi service like tech giant's Google’s free WiFi service at the Indian Railway Station. In order to make the Express Wifi project a success in India, Facebook is making use of the old cable operator model. The main aim of the project is to bring WiFi to areas in the country where even in the year 2016 the connectivity is very scarce.

Currently, Facebook has implemented the model in over a 100 rural villages all across India, where the users have to come to a particular community area in order to access the internet. The social networking giant has developed the commercially available Wi-Fi access point technology with their software. A local entrepreneur of that particular area can help people electronically buy internet for a price as low as ten rupees.

The social networking company, which enjoys its second largest user-base in India, is targeting entry-level phones with this project. There will be no restrictions whatsoever on the websites that can be accessed on the Wi-Fi network. It is important to note that Facebook is just creating Wi-Fi access points for users wanting to access the net, and it still makes use of local Internet service providers for the data. So, Facebook’s technology provides a helping hand in providing last mile connectivity where it is not yet available. To make it simpler to understand, the social networking giant is just acting as a technology enabler when it comes to Express Wi-Fi project.

The Express Wi-Fi project is actually an integral part of Facebook’s much talked about Internet.org mission. Through this mission, the Mark Zuckerberg led company aims to bring internet connectivity across the whole wide world, especially in the rural pockets. In addition to the Indian villages, Facebook has also been testing its Express Wi-Fi in some other parts of the world. Facebook’s Free Basics, which was banned by India’s Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) earlier this year for violating the principles of net neutrality, was also a part of the Internet.org mission.

Facebook's Zuckerberg is Almost Ready To Show Off His AI

"Keep Calm and live on" is a saying that can't be applied to Facebook's founder genius Mark Zuckerberg. While he surely does live on and bright and how, the keep calm part is something which cannot be associated with him ever. Proving the saying wrong once again, Zuckerberg is currently in the midst of perfecting an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant to help him at home and work.

Zuckerberg first discussed the AI in the beginning of the year in January as part of his annual personal challenge. He once again discussed the idea yesterday at Facebook's town hall Q&A from Rome, Italy. Zuckerberg hopes that the AI will be somewhat similar to Tony Stark's much loved Jarvis.

The world could expect to see a preview of the AI somewhere in September. "It's starting to be able to do some pretty fun things, and I'm looking forward to being able to show it to the world," said Zuckerberg in the Rome town hall Q&A.

The Facebook founder also revealed that the AI assistant is already able to do simple tasks like adjusting the thermostat and controlling the lights and house gates. In addition to this, the AI is also able to make Zuckerberg toast.

There hasn't been much clarity on what Zuckerberg intends to do with the AI once it's completed. Whether he will use it for commercial purposes or keep it for himself, is something which we will have to wait to find out.

In addition to the town hall, Zuckerberg and his philanthropist wife Priscilla Chan, who is also a paediatrician, met Pope Francis and presented the pontiff with a model of the solar-powered, self-flying aircraft Aquila, which has been especially designed to give the gift of Wi-Fi to parts of the world currently without internet.

If you want to listen to Zuckerberg talk about the AI, you can jump to the 52-minute mark of his Rome town hall Q&A video.

Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg Join Hands To Build Foundation For Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan

ramanujam_pichai_zuckerberg

The world recently observed the 96th death anniversary (26th April, 1920) of Mathematics' genius Srinivasa Ramanujan, who died at a young age of 32 due to a severe case of tuberculosis and vitamin deficiency. Ramanujan is known for his great contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series etc. and is credited with all the major developments that took place in the field of Maths in the 20th century.

Inspired by the great personality that Mr. Ramanujam was, well-acclaimed director Matthew Brown has directed a biopic on the Mathematics' Marvel by the name "The Man Who Knew Infinity." The biopic was recently screened at Silicon Valley over a weekend and got a massive response from the audience. Arranged by Russian billionaire and founder Yuri Milner, the screening was attended by a lot of top names in the Silicon Valley, who were spell-bound by the mathematicians' life journey.

Now, the news that is making buzz in the industry and has caught everyone's attention is, that inspired by the movie Google's Sundar Pichai and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg have decided to form a foundation to honour the legendary Indian mathematician.

According to a newspaper report, Sundar Pichai (CEO, Google), Sergey Brin (founder, Google), Mark Zuckerberg (founder, Facebook), Brendan Iribe (CEO of Oculus VR), and some other fifty other '1 percenters' of Silicon Valley were at Yuri Milner's house in Los Altos this weekend to attend a private screening and dinner for the biopic and they all were filled with emotions towards the end of the film.

Some of the attendees, including Zuckerberg and Pichai, were so moved by the film that they then and there pledged to form a foundation in Ramanujan's name.

Set in the year 1913, the biopic beautifully captures Ramanujan's journey from anonymity in his small village in Tamil Nadu, India to towering fame in England. In the movie, Ramanujan's character is essayed by actor Dev Patel, globally acclaimed for the Oscar wining Slumdog Millionaire.

Ramanujan who had almost no formal training in pure mathematics field, was a self-taught genius, who failed out of college due to his obsessiveness for mathematics as a subject.
He only liked reading and studying Mathematics and would end up failing most of the subjects due to this.

"The Man Who Knew Infinity" hits the Indian theatres on Friday, April 29.

Who all can't wait to watch the biopic? Let us know in the comments below.

Facebook Wants To Build 911 Like Service For Internet Access

Facebook Wants To Build 911 Like Service For Internet Access

Ever thought of having a 911 for internet? Well, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg seems to have clearly given this idea a lot of thinking. Facebook’s Zuckerberg met Bloomberg TV’s Emily Chang on Thursday in order to discuss a 911 like facility for internet called Internet.org.  The social networking giant aims to bring bare-minimum internet access to the citizens of the developing countries through Internet.org.

Zuckerberg compared his Internet.org to the 911 facility in the United States, as both are there to provide basic necessary services to people.

According to Zuckerberg, they followed the model of 911 in the US while coming up with Internet.org.

Explaining his idea behind the concept, he said, “So even if you haven't paid for a phone plan, you can always dial 911, and if there is a crime or a health emergency or a fire, you get basic help, and we think there should be an equivalent of this for the Internet as well - where even if you haven't paid for a data plan, you can get access to basic health information or education or job tools or basic communication tools, and it will vary, country by country.”

The major concern which one sees in Internet.org is how will it be able to sustain itself but worry no more because Mark Zuckerberg has figured out a plan for this too. According to him, Internet.org will be able to sustain itself by bringing in new customers to data providers once people are able to figure out how to take make use of the Online world.

"The people understand why they would want to pay for data, and these operators end up making more money, and it ends up being more profitable, and it ends up taking that money and reinvesting that in better Internet and infrastructure for everyone in their country," Zuckerberg said.  It seems like a win-win situation for all.

The social networking giant has plans of bringing “drones” and other technologies like microwaves and lasers in the near future in order to help in increasing internet access to people.

Zuckerberg also applauded Google’s Project Loon program, which explores the possibility of using weather balloons to bring internet to the citizens of the developing world. According to him, connecting every person in the developing world to internet is something which no single company can achieve by themselves. He even said  he would love to work with Google for the same.
