Ministry of Tourism releases Dineout’s White Paper on Guidelines for restaurants post-COVID

In addition to its fatal effects on human lives & livelihoods, the COVID-19 outbreak has instilled fear in several industries including restaurants, hotels & aviation. As governments & public health agencies stress upon the importance of social distancing as a way to ‘flatten the curve’ over time, India’s largest dining out and restaurant tech platform, Dineout has unveiled a first-of-its-kind whitepaper with guidelines  and best practices for the F&B industry restaurant industry in a post-COVID F&B industry. world.

The whitepaper lists down restoration guidelines for the restaurant industry on staff management, staff health & safety, restaurant space sanitisation, food safety, social distancing, inventory management, and measures for takeaway & delivery business models. It addresses key actionable points to successfully operate in a contactless manner, keeping the safety of both diners and staff members under consideration.

The white paper was released by the Additional Director General of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, Ms. Rupinder Brar. She recognised the merits of Contactless Dining as a confidence-building measure to bring back diners,  and reiterated the importance of following the recommended practices when it comes to restaurant operations. This is to ensure that restaurants are safe spaces for diners as well as staff members.

Ms. Rupinder Brar, ADG, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India said, “ In the past, humanity stands witness to the opportunities created out of the challenges people have faced. And this is another one from them, a situation which we are facing all over the world. As rightly said by Dineout, technology can always be used in a big way in such situations. I am glad to see through your initiative that technology can be used to create a safe environment for everyone, and hence re-assuring that basic protocols while dining out are in place.”

Summary of recommended practices for the restaurant industry in a post COVID world-

A detailed version is available in the whitepaper.

Staff Management:

  • Advisory For Staff- Staff should wash hands with soap every hour. Temperature checks for staff entering the restaurant premises must be a mandate.

Staff Health & Safety:

  • Let Your Unwell Staff Rest - As per Govt guidelines, staff members who are sick should be given paid leave and advised to stay at home.

In-Restaurant Operation

  • Modified Seating Plan - Space management and overall interiors must be ‘Social distancing’ themed. Maintain at least a two meter gap between tables. Limit party size at tables and booth setting could be a marvelous add on.

Kitchen Operations:

  • No Entry For Un-sanitised Material & Staff - Make sure every staff and material is sanitised before entering the kitchen area.

Delivery and Pick-up Orders-

  • Enable “No Touch” Deliveries - Encourage diners to opt for the ‘contactless delivery’ option. Notify diners via text message or phone call when their order is about to arrive.

Contactless Dining-

Many restaurateurs are looking at contactless dining to remove nonessential human interaction and continue to safeguard both diners and staff interest. Diners are skeptical about stepping out and wary about touching un-sanitised surfaces. They want to avoid touching things like currency notes, which goes through multiple hand exchanges. To counter that, restaurants need to build trust and habits that reassures anxious diners.

There are a multitude of touchpoints with a diner that restaurateurs are looking to modify and facilitate with the introduction of technology. These can be simple actions like booking a table, pre-ordering meals, takeaway, digital ordering, digital payment, etc. Priority for diners will shift and restaurants are planning accordingly.

Ankit Mehrotra, Co-Founder & CEO - Dineout said, “As the world negotiates the enduring impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, our interaction with the outside world will reorient in both the short and long term for the sake of personal hygiene and public health. These post-COVID sensibilities are likely to have an enduring impact in how the country’s food & beverages industry is expected to operate, and the ‘Reinventing The Wheel: Dining Out In A Post-COVID Era’ whitepaper is our way to help Indian restaurateurs comprehend and adapt to this ‘new normal’ and the rapidly evolving demands of Indian diners. As a leading restaurant tech platform, we aspire to empower restaurateurs with our tech innovations to help fight this crisis, and reassure them that the human desire for good food & good time with loved ones will never go out of vogue.”

Dineout has recently unveiled the country’s first end-to-end ‘contactless dining suite’ to help restaurants operate in a post-COVID-19 world. The brand will also provide Restaurant  Safety Kits to help maintain hygiene and is facilitating hygiene certification for restaurants through a licensed lab to ensure all microbiological tests are in place before restaurants restart post the lockdown. Diners can see the certified restaurants on the Dineout App with their audit rating. This will help diners make an informed decision and be assured of the safety and hygiene standards, which will help regain consumer confidence in a post-COVID world.

Dineout Survey Reveals where People would Like to Eat Post Lockdown

  • 81% diners will prefer digital menus at restaurants in a post-COVID era

  • 77% people want to dine out while 23% would prefer continuing with delivery/takeaway

  • Online payment becomes the most preferred option with 60% votes

As the world grapples with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, everyday interaction with the outside world - public & retail spaces, restaurants, educational institutions, and even with each other has been reoriented for the sake of personal hygiene and public health. These post-COVID sensibilities are leading to major enduring changes in how the country’s food service industry is expected to operate. Based on a recent consumer survey by India’s largest dining out and restaurant tech platform, Dineout, Indian diners are now ranking safety assurance and premier hygiene as top factors when they choose a restaurant to dine in.

The report published by Dineout saw across 20 cities choosing their priorities while shortlisting a restaurant to dine out in a post-COVID world.

Diner's response to Contactless Dining:

  • Over 96% demand better waitlist management

  • 81% consumers would rather scan a QR on their phone to place an order instead of handling physical menus or tablet-based digital menus.

  • After a dining experience, 60% prefer seamless wallet-based digital payments over cash/cards

  • 85% would choose a digital valet over waiting in possibly contaminated public spaces and

  • 84% would prefer offering digital feedback over physical feedback collection.

What do people want to eat?

The report also revealed that most of India has been craving Pizza since the lockdown has been implemented, except Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata where their popular & indigenous Biryani recipes reign supreme.

Which restaurants are diners waiting to go to?

  • 77% respondents claimed that they are waiting to dine out with friends and family once the COVID-19 lockdown is lifted

  • With Big Chill, Barbeque Nation and Social emerging as favorites in Delhi

  • Mumbaikars picked Global Fusion, Poptates and Asia Kitchen

  • Aminia, Arsalan and Momo I Am emerge as the top picks in Kolkata.

  • Contrary to popular belief, Delhitties picked Veg over Non-Veg food

  • Bangaloreans & Lucknowis would rather have their drinks over food.

Ankit Mehrotra, Co-Founder & CEO - Dineout said, “The Indian restaurant industry is rapidly transforming before our eyes, and restaurants will have to rethink their daily operations to suit these post-COVID demands of their customers. While demand will return rapidly as millions of Indians are craving their favorite dishes, it’s also crucial to make the necessary changes to restore consumer confidence and trust by rapidly evolving the restaurant’s approach to using technology as means to implement Contactless Dining . These new adaptations will push the envelope of diner convenience, and we believe they are here to stay even after we survive the physical & economic after-effects of the pandemic."

Besides the new parameters for restaurant selection, the factors deciding consumer delight have also seen a major overhaul as hygiene takes precedence. Consumers would prefer that the total number of reservations in a certain period be limited with the option to pre-select the seating, ample amounts of sanitisers at tables along with UV sanitised utensils whenever possible. Hygiene ratings with detailed hygiene information, regular hygiene checks & usage of mask and disposable gloves by waiters are likely to be the new standard, with diners expecting service personnel to sanitise tables & chairs after every use.

Dineout has recently unveiled the country’s first end-to-end ‘contactless dining suite’ to help restaurants survive and thrive in a post-COVID-19 world. The brand will also provide PPE Safety Kits to Restaurants to help ensure hygiene measures and is facilitating COVID free certification for restaurants through a licensed lab to ensure all microbiological tests are in place before restaurants restart post the lockdown. Users can see the certified restaurants on the Dineout App with their audit rating. This will help diners make an informed decision and are assured of the safety and hygiene standards, which will help regain consumer confidence in a post-COVID scenario.

Dineout Introduces Vouchers to Provide Financial Support to Restaurants During COVID-19

The F&B industry and local restaurant businesses have been severely impacted amidst the nation wide shutdown to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. With an annual turnover of Rs 4 Lakh crore, the industry could potentially hit total bankruptcy as it fights a long and hard battle against basic survival. India's food services industry currently employs around 7.3 million people. If lockdowns continue, 20% to 25% of the employee-base could lose their jobs.

The subsequent financial crisis triggered by the lockdown has made it extremely tough for Yogerestaurants to pay for expenses, rent, salaries & more. To help them navigate through this turmoil, India’s largest dining out and restaurant tech platform, Dineout has introduced “Restaurant Vouchers” that customers can purchase now and redeem later when the pandemic subsides. Dineout has also started an online petition requesting the government to support the restaurant industry via employee unemployment pay cover amongst other restaurant needs as requested by NRAI.

Restaurant vouchers can be purchased via Dineout on supportrestaurants.in available in Rs. 1000 denominations which can be redeemed in the next 6 months. Dineout will transfer the funds to the restaurants at no additional charges to ensure that restaurants continue to receive the crucial cash-flow to survive these trying times, and food-lovers get discounted coupons from their favorite eateries in town.

Customers can now buy these vouchers at a discounted price now at 20,000+ partner restaurants like Plum by Bent Chair, Whiskey Samba, Lord Of the Drinks, The Wine Company, Sly Granny, Mamagoto, Kobe sizzlers, Chopstick, Gilly's Resto-Bar, & more.

Beyond financial support from customers, Dineout has also started an online petition to support NRAI on change.org (https://www.change.org/ReliefForRestaurants), requesting the Finance Ministry and Government of India to help restaurants with employee unemployment pay cover, moratorium on upcoming statutory dues, delay in utility bill payments, holiday/temporary stoppage on EMI payments & interest, freezing rental dues & restoration of Input Tax Credit on GST for all restaurants.

Speaking on this industry first initiative, Ankit Mehrotra, Co-Founder & CEO - Dineout said, “Being a restaurant tech solution, we at Dineout have always believed in a restaurant first approach to help our partners with solutions in times of need. While we are encouraging our diners to stay home despite financial implications on us, local restaurant businesses need our support more than ever as they face severe losses. They closed their operations for our safety, it's time for us as a community to support them now so they can continue to serve us tomorrow. Restaurant Vouchers are a great way to keep the momentum of cash flow steady for restaurants without any additional charges from us. We urge food-lovers across the nation to do their bit for the restaurants they love and also sign the petition for the government to hear our voice.”

Restaurant Vouchers can be purchased on the Dineout app or on web here - www.supportrestaurants.in
