Tech Mahindra Taps AMD to Power AI-Driven Infrastructure Across Hybrid and Multi-Cloud Ecosystems

Adani to Supply 61.4 MW Clean Energy to Google's Cloud Operations in India

The Adani Group recently announced a partnership with Google to supply clean energy from its new solar-wind hybrid project in Khavda, Gujarat. This project is part of the world's largest renewable energy park and is set to begin operations in the third quarter of 2025.

Adani will supply 61.4 megawatts (MW) of clean energy from this project to power Google's cloud operations in India.

This collaboration is a part of Google's broader goal to run its global cloud operations entirely on clean energy by 2030. This collaboration will help advance Google’s 24/7 carbon-free energy goal by ensuring cloud services and operations in India are supported by clean energy and thereby contribute to the sustainable growth of Google in India.

This collaboration is a significant step towards both companies' sustainability goals, and it has positively impacted Adani Group's stock prices. Google aims to run its global cloud operations entirely on clean energy by 2030, and this partnership is a key part of that effort.

Besides Adani Group, Google also announced a partnership with CleanMax to source an additional 125.4 MW of clean energy for its offices and cloud regions in India.

With proven capabilities in delivering large scale wind, solar, hybrid and energy storage projects, Adani is well-positioned to provide customised renewable energy solutions to commercial and industrial (C&I) customers to meet their energy requirements and reduce their carbon footprint. Tech Mahindra sets up Google Cloud Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad

IT services major Tech Mahindra on Tuesday said it has set up a dedicated Google Cloud Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Hyderabad to drive digital transformation of enterprises globally.

The CoE will provide enterprises with access to the technology and services they need to expedite their cloud migration and deliver tailored solutions to help them move critical workloads to Google Cloud, develop their Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics solutions and improve workplace productivity, a statement said.

The Centre will offer clients a full spectrum of cloud services that include consulting, assessment, migration, optimisation and support services for enterprises looking to optimise their workloads on Google Cloud, it added.

"Tech Mahindra's deep industry expertise and proven solutions that focus on seamless modernisation of infrastructure, applications and data to the cloud, combined with the power of Google Cloud will help accelerate the Cloud journey for enterprises as they move towards a digital-first future," Tech Mahindra Global Head Cloud Services Vivek Gupta said.

He added that as part of its TechMNXt charter, Tech Mahindra is focused on leveraging next-generation technologies to enable its customers drive growth and enhance customer experience. PTI SR

Alibaba Cloud To Open Data Centre in India

China's Alibaba Group's cloud computing arm Alibaba Cloud has announced that it will open two new data centres in Mumbai and Jakarta by March 31 next year.

"I believe Alibaba Cloud, as the only global cloud services provider originating from Asia, is uniquely positioned with cultural and contextual advantages to provide innovative data intelligence and computing capabilities to customers in this region," Simon Hu, Senior Vice President of Alibaba Group and President of Alibaba Cloud, told the gathering at the 'Computing Conference' in Shanghai.

Alibaba has recently announced data centre in Malaysia, and now two more -- in Mumbai and Jakarta, will increase company's computing resources in Asia, allowing greater support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) throughout the region with powerful, scalable, cost-effective and secure cloud capabilities.

With the three new data centres planned, Alibaba Cloud will increase its total number of data centre locations to 17, covering mainland China, Australia, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the US.

Notaby, Amazon’s cloud services division called the Amazon Web Services (AWS) had already launched two data centers in Mumbai, last year. While, Microsoft has three data centers in Pune, Chennai and Mumbai India to support its Azure cloud and Office 365 SaaS product. IBM on other hand has two SoftLayer data center in India -- Chennai and Mumbai.

Currently valued at $2.2 billion, India's data centre infrastructure market is expected to touch $4.5 billion by 2018, said a report by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). India is poised to be the second-largest market for data centres in Asia-Pacific by 2020 and the investments are expected to reach $7 billion.

Software major, Microsoft, is on a mission to put all its server farms at the bottom of the ocean bed. No, no, the company doesn't have any bad news for you. It is actually contemplating a new approach that could make data centers much faster, greener and easier to set up.

With the cloud already taking care of our online data storage, the ocean wasn't too far away, we guess.

August 2015 saw engineers placing a giant steel capsule 30 feet underwater in the Pacific Ocean. Inside the steel capsule was a single data center rack, which was enveloped in pressurised nitrogen so as to keep it cool. The crew couldn't reach the center physically, but it really didn't matter that much because the setup worked, so far so that it successfully ran commercial tasks for Azure.

The preliminary results of Project Natick — the testing of a prototype vessel on the ocean floor — have been released after a four-month plan.

Leona Philpot is the name given to the prototype submersible. This can be considered as another shoutout to the Halo universe after Cortana and Project Spartan. According to the reports doing round, the pod was kitted out with 100 sensors so as to measure every minute aspect of the underwater conditions -- be it humidity, pressure and, perhaps one of the most important, motion. The main thought process behind the idea is that there could be a possibility of similar capsules existing beneath the surface, linked to one another in a chain, and continually generating energy from the moving seawater. In the future, there could also be a possibility of the aquatic environment being used to naturally cool off the racks.

Well, not everything is in green here. This theory does have some negatives that will need to be worked around in order for it to be super successful. The most important one is the fact that server farms usually exist inland, which is far away from metropolitan areas. Further, looking from the performance pointbof view, the locations of these servers could prove to be highly inefficient for people who live near the coastline -- in theory, placing data centers offshore could in fact reduce latency for these places.

Microsoft Launches Public Cloud Services From Local Data Centres In Chennai, Pune & Mumbai

Technology giant Microsoft's Tuesday launch event proved to be a good news for India. The company launched its public cloud services from local data centres yesterday and as a part of this new launch, the company will inaugurate its three data centres - Chennai, Pune and Mumbai - in the country, serving Central India, South India, and West India Azure cloud regions respectively, making Microsoft the first hyper-scale public cloud provider in India, Jason Zander, corporate VP for Microsoft Azure, wrote in a blog post.

The launch is aimed at aiding businesses and organisations to encourage inclusive growth and spur innovation.

The three new data centres are expected to start their operations after the facility is inaugurated by the respective chief ministers - J Jayalalithaa and Devendra Fadnavis.

According to Gartner, a market research firm, the public cloud market is expected to hit the $2 billion mark in another three years.

Speaking at the launch, Tyler Bryson, general manager, marketing and operations, Microsoft India, said, "More organisations and governments will adopt the public cloud which will open up more opportunities for Microsoft."

He further added, "Enterprise-grade performance, flexibility and hybrid capability, openness and trustworthiness are differentiating factors of the Microsoft cloud. In addition, comprehensive higher-level business services enable new business possibilities for customers."

A public cloud is basically based on the standard cloud computing model. Under this model, a service provider makes resources, such as storage and applications, available to the general public over the net.

Microsoft may make these Public cloud services available absolutely free or offer them to customers on a pay-per-usage model.

According to experts, this move by Microsoft will have the US based company compete better in the local market.

“When we think about the cloud opportunity in India itself, it is going to be a $2 trillion opportunity,” said, Satya Nadella, Chief Executive, Microsoft in New Delhi on Tuesday. Nadella also added that this move by Microsoft will benefit and help entrepreneurs, Indian companies and government. Nadella did not disclose the investment amount involved in setting up the data centres but said they will have ‘sizeable’ capacity.

This announcement by Microsoft is quite important given the ruling party, BJP’s views about bringing local data centres to the country in order to maintain the data sovereignty. Besides this, a lot of Indian enterprises have long been hesitant and worried about hosting their data on public cloud because none of the major data players like Google, Microsoft or Amazon Web Service have their data centres in the country.

“I think in two or three years, when the servers come to India, the public cloud market will become more interesting because now there are some territorial issues in holding the data in the country,” said, Jagdish Belwal, CIO at Tata Motors in a recent interview given to Economic Times. Tata Motors makes use of Amazon Web Services.

According to Vishal Tripathi’s statement to Economic Times, Microsoft’s move to set up a local data centre will give the company “more muscle” to compete in the cloud services market and “Office 365 could see higher adoption”. Vishal Tripathi is a Principal research analyst at Gartner.

With players such as IBM spending millions on advertising its Softlayer cloud and Oracle trying hard in the Indian market by announcing several more new offerings, the competition in the cloud market has increased like never before.
