Post PayTM Funding, Amazon Invests Fresh $80 Mn in its Indian Payments Arm

Within a couple of months after infusing $392.3 million in its India operations, US retail giant Amazon has invested a fresh tranche of ₹590 crore (~ $80.2 million) into its Indian payment unit of Amazon Pay, marking Amazon the company's third such transaction in this year.

The funding came from Singapore-based Amazon Corporate Holdings Pvt. Ltd. and Mauritius-based entity Amazon.com.incs Ltd according to the regulatory documents filed by Amazon, which were sourced from business intelligence platform Paper.vc. Amazon Pay got the capital infusion on September 19 this year under the “Rights Issue ” by offering 59 crore equity shares.

Earlier in March, Amazon had invested in Amazon Pay (India) a sum of ₹195 crore followed by another ₹230 crore in July. In this year alone, the retail giant has invested a total of ₹1015 crore (~ US$138 million).

“We are on a mission to enable credit access for every Amazon customer,” Vikas Bansal, director, emerging payments, Amazon Pay, had said in a statement. “After the recent expansion of EMI on debit cards, we are very excited to bring this facility ahead of festive season.”

Eyeing to tap the upcoming festive season, last month, Amazon Pay unveiled card-less EMIs for selected customers. Amazon Pay EMI provides instant financing options to customers who may not yet have access to credit for purchasing high-value products, up to ₹ 60,000 by splitting their purchases into installments at low-interest rates.

Beside covering the upcoming festive season in India, this India investment by Amazon can also be seen as a reply to its local competitor in Digital Payments, PayTM, along with search giant Google's Google Pay, which is fast picking up its pace in Indian market. Just last week, One97 Communications, the parent of Paytm, raised $300 million from billionaire investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Notably, Amazon has infused fresh capital in its Indian payment arm despite stoppage of its rollout of a UPI-based payment product over lack of clearances from the Reserve Bank of India, which has demanded to localize the storage of all payments data.

In May, a report by Citi Research revealed that Amazon India's business could be valued at $16 billion right now and is expected to reach $70 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV) and $11 billion in net sales by 2027.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp had too launched its peer-to-peer digital payments beta service in India. The entry of the messaging app, which has more than 200 million monthly active users, is expected to disrupt the unified payments interface (UPI)-based digital payments landscape in India, currently dominated by Paytm, says leading data and analytics company GlobalData.

Amazon Infuses Fresh $34 Mn into its Wallet Business in India

US tech & e-commerce giant Amazon has invested fresh Rs 230 crore (~ US $33.58 Million) into its wallet Amazon Pay in India, as per filings with the Registrar of Companies (RoC) said Paper.vc. The fresh investment comes within a few months of of Rs 195 crore invested the company has already done.

The e-commerce giant's payment vehicle, Amazon Pay, was launched in India in June of last year, and has invested a total of $700+ millions in Amazon Pay India.

The latest investment has been done by routing capital via Singapore-based Amazon Corporate Holdings and Mauritius-based Amazon.com Incs. Amazon Corporate was allotted 23 crore shares and Amazon.com Incs 22,977 shares at a face value of Rs 10 per equity share.

The filing further said the terms of the funding were compliant with Reserve Bank of India regulations and Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999.

In India, Amazon Pay faces direct competition from Softbank & Alibaba-backed of Paytm, MobiKwik, Flipkart’s PhonePe and Axis Bank’s Freecharge. With this additional funds pumped in, the company would perhaps look at increasing its customer base. Since last year, the company has been on a drive to attract more customers, give cashbacks and have attractive offers with partners. Just last week on its fifth anniversary in India, Amazon India gave away plenty of cashbacks to users of Amazon Pay.

Besides India, the Amazon Pay service is available in U.S.A, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and the United Kingdo, as of June last year.

In India, Amazon Pay plans to build a fullstack payment play and recent acquisitions & tie-ups justify the same. Last year, Amazon Pay tied-up with IRCTC for booking train tickets and also tie ups with state governments to pay for traffic challans and other use cases such as payment of fees to educational institutions.

Additionally, Amazon Pay also has its presence on online food delivery players like Faasos and Box8 as well as home services application Housejoy

Coming on to acquisitions, in May, Amazon Inc has led the investment of about $8-10 million in a digital payments startup ToneTag. In the same month, Amazon also led $12 million funding round in Acko Technologies, which is a Insurtech startup headquartered in Mumbai. Prior to this, Amazon had invested $22 million in Capital Float, a Bengaluru headquartered digital lending startup.

Haptik Partners With Amazon Pay to Power Transactions for its 5M User Base

Haptik, the chatbot platform company that powers the virtual assistant app Haptik, today announced that it has partnered with Amazon Pay to power transactions for its 5 million user base. Using Haptik, people can book flights, pay bills, buy local deals - all these transactions can now be made using Amazon Pay. This makes Haptik the first app in the country to enable 3 key categories via Amazon Pay - Flight Booking, Recharge and Bill Payments. In other words, the only way you can do these transactions if you are an Amazon Pay customer is through the Haptik app.

“Amazon has shown over the last few years that they want to be market leaders when it comes to e-commerce in India”, said Aakrit Vaish, Co-Founder & CEO of Haptik, who was also recently the recipient of the AWS Deep Tech in Mobility award. “Amazon Pay is a natural progression in that effort, and we are super excited to be one of their first launch partners for this.”

Amazon Pay is the payment arm of Amazon India, and is gradually starting to rollout to partners by invite only. “When they first reached out to us, we were not very familiar with the idea of Amazon Pay. As we got to know the team better, we understood their plans and realized this is a no brainer for us to get in early. We are the only app other than food tech on their platform currently and are very proud of that,” said Aakrit.

Haptik is a Times Internet company, and is one of the largest conversational commerce companies in the world. The app is one of the highest rated apps in India and offers a guarantee on cheapest flight prices as well as no peak pricing on cab rides. It was recently featured as a top global innovator at the Chatbot Summit in Berlin and open sourced a key part of their technology at the event, the first such breakthrough globally.
