McDonald's India Commissions Delhi’s Largest Solar Power Plant in Najafgarh

World's largest fast food restaurant chain, McDonald's restaurants in North and East India, has invested Rs 14 crore to commission Delhi’s largest solar power plant in Najafgarh.

The solar plant is of 3.2 MW capacity and is said to reduce 3,822 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

With this, 24 percent of McDonald’s Delhi restaurants have now transitioned to renewable energy, the company said in media statement.

McDonald's India - North and East is finding innovative ways to reduce greenhouse gas, keep waste out of nature and preserve natural resources. Apparently, the used cooking oil is repurposed into biodiesel, which is known to have lower carbon emissions than conventional fuel.

Globally, McDonald's intends to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its restaurants and offices by 36% by 2030. Learnings from the solar-powered restaurant will be applied to those efforts. The chain will also apply for a zero energy certification from the International Living Future Institute for the restaurant.

In 2020, McDonald's unveiled a brand new solar-powered restaurant at Disney World, Orlando. Designed by Chicago-based Ross Barney Architects and Florida-based architectural and engineering firm CPH, the 8,024 square foot restaurant is covered in solar panels and features eco-friendly design features that minimize energy use and keep the building naturally cool.
