American news agency Associated Press has announced that it is launching a non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace, where collectors can purchase the news agency’s award-winning contemporary and historic photojournalism.

The marketplace will be available on desktop and mobile web through the AP Marketplace website.

Launching on 31 January, it will offer unique NFTs — including Pulitzer Prize-winning photos — from some of the most important moments in history and scenes from around the world, as captured through the lens of AP’s world-class photographers.

Besides its own NFTs, the Associated Press will also offer secondary market, where owners of NFTs on the AP Marketplace can list their NFTs for sale at their desired price for other AP Marketplace users to purchase. From the My NFTs page, users can choose to have their NFTs marked for sale and once marked, their NFT will be listed on the secondary market. Other users will be able to browse all available NFTs within the secondary market and choose to purchase based on the listed price

Dwayne Desaulniers, Associated Press director of blockchain and data licensing, said in a statement, "For 175 years AP’s photographers have recorded the world’s biggest stories through gripping and poignant images that continue to resonate today,” said Dwayne Desaulniers, AP director of blockchain and data licensing. “With Xooa’s technology, we are proud to offer these tokenized pieces to a fast-growing global audience of photography NFT collectors."

Built by blockchain technology provider Xooa, the NFT Photography marketplace will give people the chance to buy digital versions of work from current and former AP photojournalists. The NFTs sold on the AP Marketplace are minted on the Polygon blockchain, which is an environmentally-friendly Ethereum-compatible layer 2 solution.

The initial collection will be released over a period of weeks beginning Jan. 31. NFTs will range from space, climate, war and other images to spotlights on the work of specific AP photographers.

The AP Marketplace will list NFTs for sale at specific times and dates through drops. The NFTs can be purchased with a credit card or with cryptocurrency.
