Online shopping has become the new favorite of the Gen-Y of India and in order to keep this interest of customers in online shopping intact, various ecommerce sites are constantly coming up with new and innovative ideas. One such new idea is express delivery. Most of us want our package to be delivered to us as soon as we click the buy button, though that is not possible anytime soon but you may get your pink dress or the combat boots that you ordered within just three hours of placing the order.

Flipkart, which is one of India’s biggest e-tailers, is currently evaluating which cities and products it can start the service with. According to some sources, the service will carry additional charges and is expected to be rolled out in another six months.

According to Sujeet Kumar, head of WS Retail and ekart logistics, “Such delivers are necessity driven- say a thing a customer wants to gift or something he needs immediately.”  He further added that the company is still figuring out the technology and pricing for these services. The statement was given to The Economic Times.

The exact date as to when logistics arms, ekart could start with the service hasn’t been disclosed by Flipkart yet. WS Retail, which is currently the largest vendor on the Flipkart marketplace, was once a part of Flipkart.

Flipkart is currently working hard to chalk out a viable business model as the new service will be expensive for the online shoppers.

India’s ecommerce scene has come a long way since 2007 when Flipkart started its services. Back then, it used to take 4-5 days for the ecommerce sites to deliver the products but now various online sites like Snapdeal, Flipkart offer same day delivery in big cities for a minimal fee.

Faster delivery services could make the already cutthroat competition in the ecommerce market fiercer. It will surely also help attracting more and more people to the online shopping world.

This step taken by Flipkart can also encourage Amazon India in starting this service in the country. Its parent already ships to customers in US in 60 minutes for a fee of $7.99.
