Raspberry Pi, a small credit-card sized computer, has now got some new tough competition in the tiny computer market. HummingBoard which is an ARM based computer just like Raspberry Pi has recently been launched by its company SolidRun. It promises to be much more smaller, powerful and faster than the Raspberry Pi.

HummingBoard is available in three configurations and has a much faster processor than Raspberry. It has a 1GHz ARMv7 processor while the Pi has only 700MHz ARMv6 processor. The HummingBoard is 10 dollars costlier than the Pi.

The HummingBoard allows its users to run many open source operating systems such as Debian, Ubuntu and Arch. It can even run Android and XBMC. The computer is also scalable to dual core. Its core technology is based on the manufacturer’s state-of-the-art Micro system on a module. It even has ready to use OS images.

The computer’s open hardware comes with full schematics and layout. The customer can alter the computer in any way he or she likes and get a full kernel upstreaming support and all the assistance needed as the computer has been backed by the global digital maker community.

The ARM based computer offers multiple connectivity options which include HDMI, 4 USB ports, Mini PCle, mSATA, Ethernet port, GPIO pins, Infrared receiver for RC support, LVDS display out, digital and analog audio and camera interface.

The HummingBoard with 1GHz per core offers the industry’s best Price Power Performance ratio. Its powered USB allows the user to connect USB devices without the USB hub.

The HummingBoard i1, HummingBoard i2 and HummingBoard i2eX are its three specifications available in the market. The HummingBoard i1 is the entry level board computer with many features to enjoy and benefit from. On the other hand, HummingBoard i2 comes with double the processing power and RAM of i1.

The HummingBoard i2eX expands the capabilities of the HummingBoard family and is the most superior of the lot. It has many advanced features and connectivity options. All the three variants come with multi format video decoder and encoder.
