Delhi Startup Introduces a Marketplace Platform for Warehousing and Cold Storage in India

Delhi based startup, Warehouse-India.in has launched a new platform for finding warehouses in India through its marketplace. The website will be helpful for small and medium business owners who are looking for a warehouse space for shorter duration and flexibility in storage solutions.

Delhi based startup, Warehouse-India.in has launched a new platform for finding warehouses in India through its marketplace. The website will be helpful for small and medium business owners who are looking for a warehouse space for shorter duration and flexibility in storage solutions. Started in January 2019, the platform has managed over 4000 listings across India with majority of them being warehouses.

“It was a considerable loss of time and effort to find the right warehouse when I started my import business. When I talked to various business owners and realised it was a common concern. This gave me the inspiration to venture out on my own and start Warehouse-India.in,” said Founder, Dhruv Goyal.

Warehouse, cold storage and service providers list their properties and services to and communicate with the users through the inbuilt messaging feature. The owners will also have the ability to add multiple properties and track traffic on each listing through its customised dashboard. Users can send bookings requests and message warehouse owners directly through the website itself.

“The initial market reaction has been very positive. B2B players identify with the problem and see it as a game-changer in the years to come. There are several bottlenecks that we have tried to solve through an intuitive website and design,” adds Himika Sharma, one of the founding team member.

The demand and absorption in the industry reflect a vast potential. Last year’s statistics from JLL shows 60% growth in absorption versus 2017. Tier II cities are also gaining traction in the industry as more e-commerce, FMCG and ancillary businesses grow in India.

“The focus will now be to increase awareness of the global best practices among warehouse owners and improve their efficiency. Adding listings of service providers is a game changer as well to bring together more stakeholders on our platform. Furthermore, we are looking to build partnerships with multiple players to reach a wide audience through Warehouse-India.in,” commented Goyal on the future steps.

Gigstart Founder Atit Jain Explains Important Parameters For A Marketplace Startup

Gigstart Founder Atit Jain Explains Important Parameters For A Marketplace Startup

Atit Jain a BITS Pilani graduate, ex employee at JP Morgan and now the founder of Gigstart, a GSF accelerator funded first of its kind kickass marketplace from New Delhi, India that facilitates quick and transparent connect between entertainers and party planners shares his experience on the things to keep in mind while setting up a two sided marketplace.

He says two sided marketplaces often look easier to build than they actually are. There lies a classic ‘chicken and egg’ problem that one encounters. If supply exists then only demand will be created and if demand exists then only one can focus on providing the supply.

The success journey of a two sided marketplaces often works like an exponential curve with the tipping point much ahead in the journey than you can possibly imagine. That means one needs to work hard and do things in the right manner.

Below are the points that one should keep in mind while building such a marketplace:

  1. Low Burn- Keep your cash burn rate as low as possible as it will take time to build a demand. One does not want to exhaust all their resources before one reaches the tipping point of their journey. Don’t overuse technology and don’t automate unnecessarily. Let your processes tell you what you have to automate and what can be automated.

  2. Laser Focus- Focus on one problem and one geography at one time. You will recognize many parallels to what you are doing and it will seem logical to expand to more geographies to make more money. Resist this temptation till you have perfected your model.

  3. Hustle and Hack- You will need to do a lot of hustling and hacking. These tricks are required in all the businesses but marketplaces need them more. At times, you would need to sell something you don’t have and find the actual supply, later.

  4. Tougher side first- Supply and demand are the two sides of a marketplace. In most of the cases, one side will be easier to manage than the other. While you keep scaling up the easier side never equate the success of your marketplace to it. You will need to focus on the tougher side to scale up.

  5. Trust, Ease and Fulfillment- These are the 3 basic qualities of any marketplace. There was a time when you could build a marketplace without fulfillment but I think in today’s world no new marketplace can be built without fulfillment and ensuring the process through to its completion eg Air BNB. The tough question to answer is- where do you draw the line? The answer can be found only over a period of time. Till that time, do not shy away from doing un-scalable things.

A marketplace for local services by Amazon.com Inc

If some rumours doing round the market are to be believed, Amazon.com Inc is all set to launch a marketplace this year for local services. The marketplace would provide local services like babysitters, handymen etc.

Amazon will ape its grocery delivery service, Amazon Fresh model by gauging demands and testing logistics before launching it nationwide. Amazon Fresh before expanding its horizons to San Francisco and Los Angles was tested for one year in Seattle.

This move taken by Amazon can be seen as a direct target at various consumer review sites like Angie’s List Inc and Yelp Inc etc as well as Lowe’s Companies Inc and United States home improvement chains home Depot Inc. All these forums have invested in methods to connect people with local painters, plumbers, and other service providers.

Amazon for the very first time will venture into the services frontier. All this while, it has mainly concentrated on selling products and expanding from books and novels to consumer goods, media and groceries.  Local services are a big and growing market but it has been difficult for the marketplace companies to earn profits since each offering has to be tailored made for each region and city.

Rumours also suggest that Amazon has contacted a lot of service companies directly and many startups in San Francisco and Seattle that already link customers to various service providers through their own mobile Apps and websites, in the recent months.

A marketplace for local services will extend Amazon’s role as a middlemen for third party vendors, which would make for 40 % of Amazon’s sales. The quality of the services sold by Amazon will be backed by its “A-to-z Guarantee”. The same guarantee is being currently used by the company on its website to certify the products being sold by third party vendors.

Venturing into the local services has been an aim of Jeff Bezos, Chief Executive for many years. In fact, he had himself invested in Pro.com which helps its customers in searching contractors and then estimating the total costs of home repair and improvement projects. Pro.com was a Seattle based startup founded by Matt Williams, former Amazon Executive.
