Apple, Broadcom to Pay $1.1 Bn for Infringing 4 Wi-Fi Technology Patents

A Los Angeles jury has ordered Apple and Broadcom to pay USD 1.1 billion to a university in California for infringing on four Wi-Fi technology patents.

Apple was ordered to pay USD 837 million and Broadcom must pay USD 270 million to the California Institute of Technology, in what is thought to be one of the largest patent verdicts ever. The court pronounced the verdict on Wednesday.

Caltech, as the university located near Los Angeles is known, had sued both tech giants in 2016, alleging that Apple products including iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches used Broadcom components that infringed on Caltech patents related to wireless data transmissions.

Both Apple and Broadcom indicated they planned to appeal the verdict.

"Caltech appreciates the jury's thoughtful attention throughout the trial," the university said in a statement to AFP. "We are pleased the jury found that Apple and Broadcom infringed Caltech patents.

"As a nonprofit institution of higher education, Caltech is committed to protecting its intellectual property in furtherance of its mission to expand human knowledge and benefit society through research integrated with education."

In court documents, Apple and Broadcom had said that Caltech's claims "are based solely on the incorporation of allegedly infringing Broadcom chips in Apple's iPhone, Mac, and other devices."

"Broadcom manufactures the accused chips, while Apple is merely an indirect downstream party whose products incorporate the accused chips," according to court filings.

"Accordingly, the claims that Caltech has against Apple depend on establishing that the accused Broadcom chips infringe the patents and that the patents-in-suit are not invalid," it stated.

Broadcom was the main target of the lawsuit but Apple was also named as it is one of Broadcom's biggest customers. (AFP)

A Newly Developed WiFi System Can Provide 100 Times Faster Internet

Scientists in The Netherlands have developed a new wireless internet based on harmless infrared rays that is 100 times faster than existing WiFi network and has the capacity to support more devices without getting congested.

The wireless network developed by researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology in The Netherlands not only has a huge capacity -- more than 40 Gigabits per second (Gbit/s) -- but also there is no need to share since every device gets its own ray of light.

The system is simple and cheap to set up. The wireless data comes from a few central ‘light antennas’, for instance mounted on the ceiling, which are able to very precisely direct the rays of light supplied by an optical fibre.

Changing the light wavelengths also changes the direction of the ray of light. Since a safe infrared wavelength is used that does not reach the vulnerable retina in your eye, this technique is harmless. If you walk around as a user and your smartphone or tablet moves out of the light antenna’s line of sight, then another light antenna takes over, researchers said. The network tracks the precise location of every wireless device using its radio signal transmitted in the return direction, they said.

It is a simple matter to add devices: they are assigned different wavelengths by the same light antenna and so do not have to share capacity. Moreover, there is no longer any interference from a neighbouring wi-fi network.

Current wi-fi uses radio signals with a frequency of 2.5 or five gigahertz. The new system uses infrared light with wavelengths of 1,500 nanometres and higher. This light has frequencies that are thousands of times higher, some 200 terahertz, which makes the data capacity of the light rays much larger.

Researchers managed to achieve a speed of 42.8 Gbit/s over a distance of 2.5 metres. Even if you have the very best wi-fi system available, you would not get more than 300 Megabit/s in total, which is some hundred times less than the speed per ray of light achieved by the new system.

This newly developed system has so far used the light rays only to download; uploads are still done using radio signals since in most applications much less capacity is needed for uploading.

Everything You Need To Know About 'HaLow' - A New WiFi Standard

halo_wifi_standards

Always wanted your Wi-Fi to be faster? Well, your wish seems to have finally been answered in the new year. The WiFi Alliance has finally give a go ahead to the eagerly-anticipated 802.11ah WiFi standard called "HaLow"

All the approved devices will now be eligible to operate in the unlicensed 900MHz band, which has almost double the range of the current 2.4GHz standard. Further, it will use less power and provide better wall penetration.

The new Wi-Fi standard is expected to be a saviour for the Internet of Things (IoT) and connected home devices market, which so far haven't been able to take the world by storm. The main reason for this can be attributed to the fact that gadgets like connected bulbs and door sensors etc. require to have enough power so as to send data to long distances to remote hubs or routers and this has been a difficult task to achieve with the current Wi-Fi standard available.

The new standard, HaLow, combines lower power requirements with a lower frequency, in order to make sure that signals propagate in a better way. It will also offer a much larger effective range than the current Wi-Fi standards, which operate on just 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies.

The new Wi-Fi standard can be expected to adopt existing WiFi protocols like IP connectivity, which means the devices will have regular WiFi-grade security and interoperability.

We hope that the new Wi-Fi standard breathes a new life into the Internet of things, which for the time being looks like more smoke with no fire.
