India's Largest Integrated Startup Complex to be Opened in Kochi on January 13

Kerala is setting up the country’s largest Integrated Startup Complex, which will house a Maker Village, Bionest, and BRINC, the country's first international accelerator for Hardware startups, among other facilities.

State officials have said that the initiative would put Kerala’s vibrant startup ecosystem at full throttle. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the innovation hub, Integrated Startup Complex, at Kalamassery in Kochi on January 13. The complex promises to provide top quality infrastructure for incubation and acceleration.

Set up by Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), the sprawling complex, spread over 180,000 sq ft in Technology Innovation Zone (TIZ), will house Maker Village, Bionest and BRINC, the country's first international accelerator for Hardware startups, BRIC, an incubator dedicated for developing solutions for cancer diagnosis care; and a Centre of Excellence set up by industry majors like UNITY and CERA.

Spread over 13.5 acres, KSUM’s TIZ will host incubators, accelerators, centres of excellence in emerging technologies and provide high quality infrastructure for the development and growth of startups.

Once fully developed into a full-fledged campus having over half-a-million sqft built up area, TIZ would become the largest Work-Live-Play space exclusively dedicated to startups in the country, said officials from the State.

Over a 100 startup companies in various stages of growth are already operating in the three incubators functioning within the facility. The Electronics Incubator Maker Village, set up by the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K) in association with KSUM and supported by MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology), houses 65 startups working in electronics hardware technologies.

BIONEST, a biotech startup set up by KSUM in association with Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) with financial aid from BIRAC, Department of Bio Tech, Govt. of India, has 20 companies involved in deep research in biotechnology and allied fields.

The facility also has a general purpose incubator with more than 20 companies and provides with over 10,000 sqft of dedicated space for startups in scale-up stage.

During the last 12 months of operation, the startup companies operating in TIZ have filed over 30 patent applications, making this as one of the largest IP-based (intellectual property) incubation space in the country.
TIZ also has a full-fledged Fab Lab set up in association with MIT, USA and a large ESDM facility for supporting electronics startups working out of Maker Village.

Tamil Nadu To Set Up Startup Incubators & Warehouses With Guidance From NASSCOM

Following the steps of Karnataka and West Bengal, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to set aside dedicated warehouses for startups to grow and climb the ladder of success. The warehouses will receive guidance from the industrial body for software companies, Nasscom. The first ‘Startup Warehouse’ is expected to be set up in Tidel Park, which is located in the heart of Chennai.

The Tidel centre is expected to have 10,000 square-feet of carpet area and a fully functional plug-and-play office space. It will have some 60 to 80 workstations and a minimum of four conference rooms. In addition to this, the centre will have basement car park, 100 percent power backup, cafeteria, central air-conditioning and leased internet lines. The Tidel Startup Warehouse will have Nasscom as its knowledge partner.

“As a major step to support young entrepreneurs, from 2014-15 onwards, this government will make available 10% of space exclusively for Information Technology Incubation Centres as ‘Warehouses for Startups’ in all information technology parks developed by the government. These centres will promote new ventures and assist upcoming entrepreneurs by creating an appropriate ecosystem,” reads an order released by the government.

Once the Chennai Warehouse becomes fully operational, the state government promoted IT parks in Hosur, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Trichy, Coimbatore and Salem will also have dedicated startups hubs.

The Startup Warehouse programme by the Tamil Nadu will help the startup ecosystem in the state to a great extent. It will create awareness amongst new entrepreneurs and help them build entrepreneurial capability through events. The programme will also help in linking mentors and investors with startups.

According to some sources, the startup warehouses in Tamil Nadu will be integrated into Nasscom’s 10,000 startup programme. Last week NASSCOM launched its second startup warehouse in Kolkata after already existing Bangalore startup warehouse under NASSCOM 10,000 Startups program.

Nasscom will have the responsibility of end-to-end programme management of the Tamil Nadu warehouses. According to the order released by the government, “This will be achieved by hiring a dedicated professional team to staff the warehouse to ensure smooth day-to- day operations of the Startup Warehouse.”

A dedicated board comprising one leader from the Tamil Nadu startup community, two representatives from Nasscom and one or more Tamil Nadu government representatives will be set up. The state government representatives will include managing director of ELCOT and state IT secretary.

“It is a great opportunity for Nasscom to be associated with the government to create an ecosystem for tech startups in Tamil Nadu. We will build all our warehouse activities through this and bring Tamil Nadu under the startup radar,” said K Purushothaman, senior director at Nasscom.

The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) 10,000 Startup programme has decided to open its second warehouse in Kolkata after existing ware. The warehouse, as defined by Nasscom, is a co-working facility that can be leased by start-ups for six months at a nominal cost.

The trade association has recently entered into a partnership with the West Bengal Government and the Information Technology and Electronics Department of the Government of West Bengal for the same. This is NASSCOM’S effort to reach out to the maximum number of young entrepreneurs and businesses.

In order to qualify for selection at the Start-up Warehouse, Kolkata interested startup may fill application form here. Startups will be charged a nominal monthly rental of INR 2,500 (exclusive of service tax) for each seat at the Warehouse.

This will be the second warehouse under NASSCOM’S 10,000 Startup initiative. The association launched its first warehouse back in 2013 in India's Silicon Valley, Bangalore. The Bangalore warehouse was launched in a partnership with the Government of Karnataka.

The Kolkata warehouse will be managed by NASSCOM 10,000 Startup programme and receive financial support from the Government of West Bengal. More such startup warehouses are being planned to launch in other cities such as Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad.

NASSCOM through its startup warehouse will provide the startups with a central, well-connected, plug-and-play working space for first six months of their operations on a per-seater basis. Further, the warehouse will also be visited by local members of the 10,000 Startups mentor network. The members will provide one- on -one mentorship to startups housed in the warehouse.

“We are hoping that this would evolve into a collaborative centre for learning, sharing and development of ideas. The vision of NASSCOM 10,000 Start-ups is to provide a platform for entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into scalable businesses,” said Rajat Tandon, Senior Director, NASSCOM 10,000 Startups to e27.co.
