On-Demand Healthcare Startup mfine Raises $4.2 Mn from Prime Venture Partners, Others

Bangalore-based mfine, an app-based on-demand healthcare service provider, has raised $4.2 million in Series A funding led by Prime Venture Partners along with participation of existing investors Stellaris Venture Partners and Mayur Abhaya (CEO and MD of LifeCell).

Prime Venture Partners, an early stage fund, today announced the close of its third fund at INR 400 crore (~$60M). Prime will continue to focus on making concentrated investments with high conviction and support, maintaining its deep involvement model. The key investment sectors which the fund focuses on are Digital India, Fintech/Financial Services, Healthcare, Education, Logistics and Global SaaS solutions.

Founded in 2011, Prime Venture Partners is a Bangalore-based seed fund and incubator led by serial entrepreneurs Sanjay Swamy, Shripati Acharya and Amit Somani along with partner emeritus, Raj Mashruwala. It claims to has had a rich track record of investing in early stage technology startups in India and it has always focussed on companies that have an innovative approach to solving fundamental problems through technology.

Previously, Prime was earlier known as AngelPrime and had raised its first fund of $8M in 2012. Later in 2015, it rebranded itself as Prime and also raised Fund-II of a $46M. Prime is typically the first institutional investor in a startup. The firm follows a distinctive model of being highly selective and invests in only 3-5 companies per year, only after building deep conviction in entrepreneurs and their startups through a rapid yet thorough diligence process. A common theme among Prime portfolio companies is strong product and tech teams with unique insights and an ability to rapidly iterate. Portfolio companies work closely with all partners during the formative phase of the business, helping fine-tune all aspects of the company. The firm actively supports entrepreneurs with business and product strategy, refining operating metrics, hiring, partnerships, marketing, finance, all the way through raising subsequent capital.

While most of Prime’s portfolio companies are focussed on the booming Digital India opportunity, Prime also has several companies that target the US, Middle-East and other International markets, or that initially start in India and expand from India to other geographies. Most of these companies have gone on to raise strong follow-on rounds of investment from other leading Venture Capital firms in India, Silicon Valley and Asia.

Prime has three key areas of focus for investment:

  • HealthCare & Education: AffordPlan (2016- at intersection of Fintech and Healthcare), Maya (Women’s reproductive health), Quizizz (2015 - multiplayer quizzing platform).

Amit Somani, managing partner, Prime Venture Partners, said, "The quality of technology entrepreneurship in India is growing non-linearly. It is driven by the fact that several employees of the first wave of tech startups have the maturity and exposure to solving problems at scale and are now turning entrepreneurs themselves. Combining this with our first-hand experience and our unique model of investing in a few companies with high conviction and active support, we believe makes for a perfect storm and we’re excited to be in the midst of this."

Rajesh Mashruwala, Partner Emeritus, Prime Venture Partners, said, "There has never been better time for Indian innovators. When most of the world is plagued by political and economic uncertainties, India offers stable policy, level playing field and commitment to build digital economy."

"We are targeting that space with our smartphone based product and with this new funding hope to reach 20 lakh households over the next two years."

For revenue generation the startup has a subscription model which the society management pays on a monthly basis and the charges depend on the size of the society and the number of gates that needs to be managed.

"The charges for the society vary between Rs 8000 and 30,000 per month," said Arisetty.

The security services market in India is a $6-billion industry according to Grant Thornton report, of which the gated-premises security market, comprising manual guards and security equipment, is estimated at $2 billion. Saas Startup Synup Raises $6M in Series A; Aims to Achieve 10x Growth in the Next 3 Years

Synup, a provider of SaaS-based solutions that enables local businesses to manage their online presence, today announced it has completed a $6 million (approx INR 40 crores) Series A round of financing. The fresh round of investment is led by Vertex Ventures along with Synup’s existing investor, Prime Venture Partners, who also participated in the round. The investment will help the company to rapidly expand its sales and marketing efforts as well as broaden and accelerate product development.

Ben Mathias, Managing Partner, Vertex Ventures said, “Synup has been able to solve a difficult problem in a market that is largely underpenetrated. Their strong early customer traction is a testament to the efficacy of their approach to address this massive market opportunity. We have been impressed with the experience of their team and the thoughtful design of their product, and look forward to helping scale this company.”

Shripati Acharya, Managing Partner, Prime Venture Partners said, “Prime is thrilled to continue our partnership with Synup. Synup is amongst the first wave of global SaaS companies to come out of India and we are looking forward to being a part of this journey along with Vertex. When we initially invested, Synup was just starting their journey. However, the clarity of vision from Ashwin in understanding both the opportunity and the execution of it left little doubt in our minds that we wanted to back Synup. In two years Synup has achieved rapid customer traction and revenue growth and is well positioned to scale to the next level.”

The Series A financing builds on an exceptional year for Synup which saw a rapidly growing roster of clients, and market momentum. Just after its launch in 2015, Synup achieved $1 million in ARR in the first 9 months, and since then over 50,000 locations in the U.S & Canada have used its solutions. The company has already started to generate a positive cash flow and aims to grow 10x in the next 3 years.

Currently, local businesses are getting discovered in hundreds of fragmented consumer platforms on the web & mobile. Most of these listings have to be manually updated across all the platforms and it takes approximately 8 hours a week for a store manager to just update location data. The listings also do not provide the business with any analytics or insight into user reviews.

Synup offers a complete local marketing solution that makes it easy for businesses to manage their location data, presence, reputation and analytics. Synup tracks hundreds of thousands of business profiles & monitors millions of interactions to provide businesses with automated marketing as well as insights that they would otherwise not get. It also manages and boosts local SEO efforts for agencies, enterprises and small businesses with multiple locations. Synup works with both digital agencies and businesses directly to manage their listings on over 50 of the most important local search destinations. Additionally, it tracks customer reviews and analyses rankings on different search engines.

In the next six months, the company wants to go beyond location data management and offer a wider breadth of products to its customers. The company is bullish on its growth as out of the total 28 million local businesses in the US, only about a million (3.57%), use automated location-marketing services like Synup.

Synup’s founder Ashwin Ramesh is a serial entrepreneur having started his first business when he was still in high school. Currently, the company has over 40 employees and is looking to hire across all sections of the business. Synup plans to expand into Europe and United Kingdom by mid - 2018.

Ashwin Ramesh, Founder & CEO, Synup said, “These are exciting times at Synup. There is an undisputed need for an automated marketing solution for millions of local businesses across the globe. We are fortunate to have partnered with two top tier investors such as Vertex and Prime, who bring both a deep understanding of our business as well as operational expertise. We have built a unique and cost effective solution and have seen some excellent growth so far and aim to take this to other geographies soon with a wider product offering.”
