NetApp and Cisco Collaboration Strengthens Defense-in-Depth for Enterprise Cyber Resilience

NetApp and Cisco Collaboration Strengthens Defense-in-Depth for Enterprise Cyber Resilience
  • New NetApp Splunk SOAR playbook helps contain ransomware attacks and limit data loss
NetApp® (NASDAQ: NTAP), the Intelligent Data Infrastructure company, and Cisco, (NASDAQ: CSCO) today announced an expansion of their collaboration to help customers strengthen defense-in-depth strategies for customers. Combining Intelligent Data Infrastructure with advanced analytics and observability capabilities, NetApp and Splunk have delivered deep, real-time visibility into storage and infrastructure health. Together, they are helping customers turn operational data into actionable insights that improve reliability, security, and business outcomes. By expanding their collaboration with the new NetApp Splunk Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR) playbook, NetApp and Splunk are helping joint customers contain ransomware attacks and limit data loss at the storage layer, enhancing the containment of the blast radius of cyberattacks while increasing the speed and reducing the cost of recovery.

“With AI accelerating both the speed and sophistication of cyberattacks, the window to respond has never been smaller,” said Sandeep Singh, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Platform at NetApp. “To limit the cost and impact of ransomware, organizations must act the moment a threat is detected, which means extending security automation into the storage layer where data lives. As the company delivering the most secure storage on the planet, NetApp is uniquely positioned to make storage an active part of a defense-in-depth strategy. By working with Cisco to enable Splunk SOAR workflows to take direct action on data stored in NetApp ONTAP®, we’re helping make a defense-in-depth security strategy simpler and more effective.”

To give customers the resiliency and flexibility they need to protect their data, Cisco and NetApp are releasing the NetApp Splunk SOAR playbook. Splunk Enterprise Security is already integrated with NetApp Ransomware Resilience to collect analytics from the data layer, enhancing incident triage and prioritization. With the new playbook, Splunk SOAR users can now use those signals as well as signals from other solutions to automatically take incident response actions directly on NetApp ONTAP storage as an integral part of their incident response. These actions include blocking a suspicious user, taking snapshots of the data and taking data volumes offline to protect against further infection. As a result, customers will be better able to contain ransomware attacks and limit data loss at the storage layer. Utilized as part of the organization’s defense in depth security strategy, the NetApp Splunk SOAR playbooks help to strengthen collaboration between security and storage teams.

Automating the response and recovery actions against cyber threats with the NetApp Splunk SOAR playbook improves security team metrics like mean time to contain (MTTC) and reduces the manual effort and skills required to protect data. As a result, NetApp and Cisco are making it faster and more efficient for enterprises to achieve cyber resilience.

Effective security strategies require visibility and action across the entire technology stack, including the data layer,” said David Dalling, GVP, Splunk Security at Cisco. “With the new NetApp Splunk SOAR playbook, ONTAP storage becomes an active participant in the security ecosystem, enabling organizations to contain threats directly targeting enterprise data. By connecting NetApp storage into Splunk SOAR workflows, we’re helping security and storage teams collaborate more seamlessly and respond to incidents with greater speed and confidence.”

The partnership between Splunk and NetApp helps customers run their businesses more securely and effectively, connecting operations across storage and security teams,” said Dallas Olson, Chief Commercial Officer at NetApp.By giving customers real-time visibility into what’s happening across their environments, NetApp and Splunk enable enterprises to reduce disruption and optimize performance so they can use their data to drive measurable business outcomes.”

The NetApp Splunk SOAR playbook is now available to download from SplunkBase.

NetApp Collaborates with Google Cloud to Power Data Infrastructure for Distributed Cloud

NetApp® (NASDAQ: NTAP), the Intelligent Data Infrastructure company, today announced that it has expanded its collaboration with Google Cloud with a 4-year Enterprise Agreement to accelerate the deployment of the NetApp storage solutions within the Google Distributed Cloud air-gapped (GDC), Google's sovereign cloud platform delivered by World Wide Technology (WWT). The NetApp data platform within this full-stack, air-gapped private cloud solution delivers the built-in security organizations need to handle sensitive information and meet data sovereignty requirements.

For government agencies and defense organizations, sensitive and classified data can’t leave controlled environments, but that data is also critical to AI‑driven decision‑making,” said Cesar Cernuda, President at NetApp. By embedding NetApp’s secure-by-design storage systems into Google Distributed Cloud, we're enabling customers to build Intelligent Data Infrastructure that provides the foundation to support accredited, enterprise‑grade AI directly within sovereign and air‑gapped environments. Now, public sector customers can modernize operations, accelerate insight, and innovate responsibly without compromising security, compliance, or national sovereignty.”

Google Distributed Cloud extends customers’ cloud infrastructure and services to the places customers need them, including on-premises data centers and network edges. NetApp AFF, StorageGRID, and Trident solutions enable Intelligent Data Infrastructure that, with the integrated GDC solution, provides private cloud with zero-trust security and the ability to store data locally, manage encryption keys, and maintain control. Leveraging these systems within GDC enables customers to deploy cloud technology and applications, including AI capabilities, while maintaining more control over their IT environments by bringing the cloud closer to where their data is generated or creating air-gapped environments that limit or eliminate outside connections.

“Across the public sector, agencies are being asked to do more with data while operating under increasingly strict sovereignty, security, and compliance mandates,” said Muninder Sambi, VP, Product Management & Supply Chain, Google Distributed Cloud, Google Cloud. “Google Distributed Cloud was designed for exactly these environments, enabling customers to bring modern cloud services and advanced AI capabilities into sovereign, air‑gapped, and disconnected settings. By working with NetApp, we are helping government and regulated enterprises innovate where their data resides—supporting mission‑critical workloads with the highest levels of security, compliance, and operational integrity, without slowing the pace of transformation.”

Over the last year, Google Cloud has extended its AI capabilities for regulated use cases. Gemini’s advanced reasoning and state-of-the-art generation capabilities are available on GDC to unlock key generative AI capabilities such as automation, content generation, discovery, and summarization on-premises. Customers can operate fully disconnected, while still integrating Google's AI capabilities, enabling innovation while meeting strict security and compliance requirements.

“AI has the potential to transform how every organization operates, even those facing the most stringent controls to meet national security and data sovereignty requirements,” said Joe Koenig, President at WWT. “Leveraging data-driven insights to power your business requires a combination of innovative AI capabilities with powerful infrastructure.”

NetApp Empowers Students From Less-resourced Communities With Data Science Skills

NetApp Empowers Students From Less-resourced Communities With Data Science Skills

Yesterday, at Christel House School in Bangalore, more than one hundred school children from local elementary and secondary schools were given the unique opportunity to share their data-driven ideas for improving education. They included calling on governments to fund more computer labs in schools, dedicated curriculum time to learning about mental health issues and focusing on skills development so that students feel prepared to enter the job market.

The event was hosted by NetApp, a global, cloud-led, data-centric software company, the India STEM Foundation, and World’s Largest Lesson, an education program run by Project Everyone working in partnership with UNICEF.

“Education must be transformed to meet the needs of an ever-changing world,” said Alison Bellwood, Executive Director of World’s Largest Lesson. “Today’s school students have a unique perspective, informed by their COVID-19 experiences and the world they see around them. Our teacher resources this year are designed for students to explore issues around SDG4: Quality Education, using data. If we listen and learn from students, we can find the solutions to make education effective for all.”

NetApp Empowers Students From Less-resourced Communities With Data Science Skills

During the event, students presented bold ideas informed by local education data to an audience of education leaders, parents, and corporate leaders including Smt. K A Sadhana, Visvesvaraya Industrial & Technical Museum, National Council of Science Museums, Aurelia Ardito, Education Specialist at UNICEF India and Ravi Chhabria, Managing Director of NetApp India.

“COVID-19 presented an urgency as well as a once in a generation opportunity to transform the education system through technology, by implementing it as tool for capacity building, inclusiveness and quality learning, without replacing the essential role of educators. Technology has huge potential for changing how education is delivered in India and can increase access to and quality of learning. STEM and digital skills are becoming increasingly important priorities for UNICEF as critical pathways to advance transformative results, helping young people become skilled in areas critical for the next generation labour force”, UNICEF Education Specialist, Aurelia Ardito.

The NetApp Excellerator Program Rocket-Fuels B2B Tech Startup Ecosystem With Cohort Five

NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP), the leader in cloud data services, today announced the graduation of its fifth cohort as a part of the NetApp Excellerator demo day. NetApp Excellerator is the company's flagship startup accelerator program. On this occasion, five technology startups, CloudSEK, Senseforth.ai, Lightwing, Coralogix and Curl Analytics, showcased their technology impact and market opportunity to an eminent audience comprising of venture capitalists, industry leaders and the NetApp leadership team.

The program has so far mentored 29 B2B technology startups through five cohorts and has evolved to focus on a sponsored proof-of-concept (PoC) model. The PoC model gives the startups a platform to prove the potential of their solutions in the real-world. The startups and NetApp explore technology adjacencies to go to market together and help create technology that changes the world with data. All five startups are engaged in PoCs with NetApp.

The pitch presentations made by the entrepreneurs at the demo day saw innovations in the space of AI, machine learning-powered log analytics, conversational AI, intelligent automation and digital risk management. These startups have been extensively mentored to strengthen their technology solutions and product market fit while also enhancing the overall user experience. This is already creating significant business impact for their clients through solving challenges related to unstructured data, big data, customer support, reduction of cloud costs and cybersecurity.

"The fifth cohort marked the launch of an evolved model where the startups built paid PoCs, which will give them stronger go-to-market opportunities and drive exponential growth. We too have made great strides since our first cohort. Today, we are attracting new-age disruptive companies from around the world," said Madhurima Agarwal, leader, NetApp Excellerator. "We've engaged deeply with 29 pioneering startups, including three who have had successful exits. This is the proof of the value NetApp has added to our alumni, enabling them to create tangible commercial success in terms of funding, customer acquisitions and successful exits."

The program's focus on mature startups and global outlook offers a natural fit for startups from across the world. One such example is Coralogix, an Israel-based startup which is part of this cohort.

"Working with the engineering team at NetApp is delightful," said Lior Redlus, co-founder and CTO of Coralogix. "We found a team of professionals constantly monitoring their systems to make sure they are operating optimally, and eager to understand how Coralogix log analytics can help identify issues faster and reduce time to resolution. We learned about NetApp's technology, and are now evaluating Cloud Volume ONTAP with the innovation team in Israel. We want to work with cutting-edge technology in the cloud."

The strength of the program reflects in the success stories from the previous cohorts. Last year, Adya (first cohort), was acquired by Qualys, a leading provider of cloud-based security and compliance solutions. Similarly, ArchSaber, from the second cohort, and VitaCloud from the first cohort, have also had successful exits. Additionally, SigTuple, Anlyz, FirstHive and others have secured next round of funding.

"We started this program with our own unique outlook as a 27-year-old startup," said Ravi Chhabria, managing director of NetApp India. "We continue to innovate across our ecosystem and these young startups enable our customers to change their world with data. With our deep expertise in data management we are uniquely positioned to help them navigate next-generation technologies to scale up their business. Their ability to disrupt the tech ecosystem and their vision to drive economic growth is inspiring. Our role as an accelerator is to catapult them to achieve success in delivering compelling solutions to meet customers' needs. Most importantly, we offer them our trust and credibility, and that is the basis to build any business relationship with a young company."

NetApp Excellerator is a mentorship-driven startup accelerator focused on creating an impact in the startup ecosystem through association with a small, yet unique set of data-driven B2B tech startups. The NetApp team, in collaboration with industry-renowned external mentors, coaches the startups on cutting-edge technologies, platforms, tools and business acumen.
