He emphasized that this will be India’s first commercial-scale semiconductor production facility, and highlighted Micron’s work on high-bandwidth memory (HBM) as part of its expansion strategy.

Earlier, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed at the World Economic Forum in Davos that Micron’s $2.75 billion Gujarat chip packaging facility will commence operations by February 2026, framing it as a major milestone in India’s semiconductor mission and AI ambitions.

Micron Technology is set to roll out its first batch of semiconductor chips manufactured in India from its Sanand facility in Gujarat by early 2025, the company's India managing director Anand Ramamoorthy, in an interaction with Economic Times. This move is part of a broader strategy to cater to global demand, with a significant portion of the output intended for export markets.

The Sanand unit is focused on exporting chips and is expected to serve multiple sectors, including data centers, smartphones, notebooks, internet-of-things devices, and the automotive industry.

The emphasis is on agility and addressing talent scarcity in niche sectors like cybersecurity as the company prepares for this significant step in semiconductor manufacturing. This development is a part of India's growing semiconductor industry and is expected to contribute to the global supply chain diversification efforts.

The plant will focus on the assembly and test manufacturing for both DRAM and NAND products. The facility is part of Micron's strategy to meet long-term global demand for memory and storage, complementing the company's global assembly and test network.

The semiconductor chips to be packaged at Micron's Sanand unit in Gujarat are intended for a wide range of applications and will primarily be used in Data Centers, Smartphones, Notebooks, Internet-of-Things (IoT), Automotive Segments (ADAS).

Idaho based Micron's product range includes DRAM, flash memory, and SSDs, marketed under brands like Ballistix Gaming and Crucial.

In 2023, Micron reported a revenue of US$ 15.54 billion. The company employs around 43,000 people worldwide. Micron has been instrumental in several technological advancements, including the development of atomic layer deposition high-k films for DRAM and pioneering pitch double-patterning for NAND flash memory.

Besides Micron, Indian conglomerates – Tata and Vedanta, are also setting up semiconductor chips manufacturing plants in the country.

Collaborating with a Taiwanese partner, Tata is planning to set up India's first semiconductor fabrication plant in Gujarat's Dholera. The project is estimated to cost Rs 91,000 crore and aims to produce 300 crore chips annually for various sectors.

While, Vedanta has announced a $20 billion investment in technology, electronics, and glass businesses over the next four years, which includes semiconductor manufacturing.

Interestingly, even cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has invested in a semcon company called RRP Electronics which is investing Rs. 5,000 crore in a semiconductor facility, contributing to the 'Make In India' initiative.

In addition to these, companies like Tata Elxsi, Dixon Technologies, Moschip Technologies, and SPEL Semiconductor Limited are also involved in the semiconductor sector and are considered key semiconductor stocks in India.

Swan’s extensive background includes his tenure as CFO and later CEO of Intel Corporation, where he oversaw 110,000 employees and $78B in annual sales. Prior to joining Intel, as CFO of eBay, Swan played a significant role in driving the company’s global expansion strategy. Swan also held notable roles as CFO at Electronic Data Systems Corp., TRW Inc., and Webvan Group, Inc., where he additionally served as COO and CEO.

Micron Setting Up New $2.75 Bn Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility in Gujarat, India
New DRAM and NAND assembly and test facility – the first in India – will expand Micron’s global manufacturing base to meet future demand

Micron Technology, Inc., one of the world’s largest semiconductor companies, has announced plans to build a new assembly and test facility in Gujarat, India, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Sanjay Mehrotra, the Indian-American President and CEO of Micron, in Washington DC during his state visit to the US.

Micron’s new facility will enable assembly and test manufacturing for both DRAM and NAND products and address demand from domestic and international markets.

While Micron will invest $825 million in setting up the facility, the remaining 1.925 billion will be supported together by Central Government of India and Gujarat state government as fiscal support and in incentives, respectively.

Phased construction of the new assembly and test facility in Gujarat is expected to begin in 2023. Phase 1, which will include 500,000 square feet of planned cleanroom space, will start to become operational in late 2024.

The combined investment by Micron and the two government entities — Central Government of India and Gujarat State Government — over the course obf both phases will be up to $2.75 billion.

Micron will receive 50% fiscal support for the total project cost from the Indian central government and incentives representing 20% of the total project cost from the state of Gujarat, which comes under the government's “Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme" announced in July last year, by Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY), Government of India.

Micron’s investment will be up to $825 million over the two phases of the project and will create up to 5,000 new direct Micron jobs and 15,000 community jobs over the next several years.

US based semiconductor company, Micron Technology, is close to committing at least $1 billion towards setting up a semiconductor packaging factory in India, Bloomberg News report said.

The official announcement regarding this significant investment could be made during the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United States this week. The report further said that the amount of money committed could go as high as $2 billion. The details could change as discussions are in progress, and however there’s no guarantee an agreement will be finalized.

The 44-years-old company, Micron Technology, is a semiconductor company that produces DRAM, SDRAM, flash memory, SSD and CMOS image sensing chips. The $38 billion company offers the industry's broadest portfolio of silicon-to-semiconductor solutions. Micron has 11 manufacturing sites spread across the US, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and China.

Recently, Micron announced an investment of up to $100 billion over the next 20 Years to construct a new Mega Fab In Clay, New York. With the first Phase of investment of $20 billion planned by the end of this decade.

Earlier this month, Indian media reports also suggested that Modi-led central government has started discussions with US-based Micron Technology to go beyond setting up an Assembly Testing Marking and Packaging (ATMP) facility in India to include a fabrication, or fab, plant.

Micron also said that it was committed to China and would invest 4.3 billion yuan ($603 million) over the next few years in its chip packaging facility in the Chinese city of Xian. This comes despite the fact that China, which is world’s largest semiconductor market, has put a ban on the use of Micron chips in what Beijing called critical infrastructure.

Notably, China has put a ban on using Micron’s products as Chinese authorities announced in late May that Micron failed a cybersecurity review and warned operators of critical infrastructure in the country against buying Micron’s products.

Post this ban, the US is looking at India to strengthen key supply chains outside of China.

In addition, Prime Minister Modi has also pledged $10 billion to woo global chipmakers to India, promising his administration will bear half the cost of setting up all semiconductor sites.

While industry projections ha d forecasted 50 billion IoT device deployments by 2020, the reality has fallen short with only around 9 billion IoT devices deployed. This disparity stems from vastly underestimated challenges with cellular-enabled connectivity and cybersecurity, which hamper IoT growth. Though cellular connectivity offers significant advantages over Wi-Fi — such as longer range, better outdoor performance, stronger security and existing global infrastructure — ABI Research predicts only 420 million cellular-connected IoT devices in 2021, just a fraction of total IoT deployments (ABI Research, M2M Embedded Cellular Models, 3Q 2020 ). This gap is due to the intricate logistics required for worldwide cellular-enabled services, such as management of physical SIM cards and fixed contracts per operator per country.

Tackling these challenges head-on, Tata Communications will offer a cloud-based eSIM for IoT, underpinned by Micron's flash-based identity platform Authenta KMS. The solution will enable:

Micron's Authenta security-as-a-service solution powers flash-based IoT identities
