MakeMyTrip Lays off 350 Employees Due to COVID-19 Impact

Online travel firm MakeMyTrip has laid off 350 employees due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its business.

Most of the fired employees are in international holidays and related line of business, according to sources.

In an email to employees, MakeMyTrip Group Executive Chairman and founder Deep Kalra and Group CEO Rajesh Magow said even as times remain unpredictable, what is evident is that the impact of COVID-19 crisis is going to be long drawn for the company.

It is unclear when travelling will become a way of life, as it was pre-COVID, they added.

"Over the past two months, we have analysed impact closely and have spent considerable time thinking about the path to business recovery. As a result, it's become agonisingly clear that there are certain lines of business that are far deeply affected and will take much longer than the others to recover," they said.

It is evident that the pandemic has changed the context and viability of some of business lines in its current form, the mail said.

"Keeping this in mind we have had to take this sad but inevitable decision of rightsizing our workforce in these businesses," Kalra and Magow said.

When asked about the number of employees that have been impacted, a company spokesperson confirmed that 350 employees have been impacted.

"To compassionately take care of the employees who have been impacted, we have tried to do our best to offer support including Mediclaim coverage for individuals and their families till the end of the year, leave encashment, gratuity, retaining the right to exercise part of RSUs as applicable, retention of company laptops and outplacement support apart from salary payments as per their notice periods," they said.

Kalra and Magow also said that it was undoubtedly the toughest decision, "we have had to take so far and it's the saddest day for us as an organisation". PTI AKT

CCI orders detailed probe against Make My Trip, OYO

The Competition Commission on Monday ordered a detailed investigation against Make My Trip (MMT) and OYO for allegedly indulging in anti-competitive business practices.

While ordering the probe, CCI also noted that a case against MMT and OYO for entering into a vertical arrangement having an appreciable adverse effect on competition (AAEC) in the market is also "prima facie" made out.

"The Commission is of the view that prima facie a case of contravention against MMT for abuse of dominant position... is made out on account of all the three allegations analysed supra," the Competition Commission of India (CCI) said.

The order came on a complaint filed by Rubtub Solutions Pvt Ltd which operates under the brand name of Treebo Hotels in India and is in the business of providing franchising services to budget hotels.

As per the complaint, Treebo and its partner hotels are being excluded from listing on MMT's platform through abrupt termination pursuant to the commercial arrangement between MMT and OYO.

Besides, MMT is alleged to have imposed "price parity restriction" on Treebo partner hotels through the chain agreement, which restricted it from providing its properties to Booking.com and Paytm at a better price.

Additionally, MMT allegedly imposed an "exclusivity condition" on Treebo through exclusivity agreement which restricted it from listing its properties on Booking.com and Paytm for 72 hours and 30 days prior to check-in for hotels situated in category A and category B cities, respectively.

The complainant said that OYO has abused its dominant position in the market of franchising services for budget hotels in India by entering into an anti-competitive vertical arrangement with MMT, which is a dominant online travel agency (OTA), thereby denying market access to it.

Accordingly, the Commission on "prima facie" finding the contravention of relevant provisions of Competition Act, directed DG, its investigation arm to conduct a detailed probe. PTI SRS

Bona Vita Technologies’s GoFro Bags Close To $10 Mn

Online holiday marketplace, GoFro has raised close to $10 million in its second round of equity financing, led by Japanese travel major HIS Co and MakeMyTrip, reports ET. Owned and operated under Bona Vita Technologies, GoFro informed that proceeds from the Series B, which is yet to be closed and could cross $10 million, will be used by the company to further build its tech platform and expand to new geographies, along with growing its supply and agent network.

Commenting on the development, Amitabh Misra, Founder and CEO, Bona Vita informed ET, “Given the relationship with HIS, one of Japan's leading travel companies, we expect to enter the country over the course of the next two quarters. Misra, after stepping down as the chief technology officer at online marketplace Snapdeal was inspired by cumbersome travel experiences to found GoFro. According to the founder, the Series-B round could expand further, given that the firm is currently engaged in discussions with multiple investors, indicating the potential new backers could also be strategic in nature.

“Given that we are looking to grow, and move into newer markets, we do lean more towards strategic investors who, we feel, bring more to the table compared to pure financial investors," Misra said.
