Toshiba Launches 2020-21 Range of Home Appliances in First Ever Nationwide Virtual Event

Gurgaon Startup Arista Vault Develops Disinfectant Device, to Cost Half of Imported Gadgets

Gurgaon-based Arista Vault on Friday said it has developed a device that can disinfect items like mobile phones, currency notes and masks, and would make it available at less than half the price of imported devices.

The product, named 'Shuddhi Box', uses ultraviolet-C rays, ozone and a mix of other technologies to disinfect surfaces and kill viruses like the novel coronavirus.

Arista Vault co-founder and CEO Purvi Roy said the company has started producing around 1 lakh units per month and is in talks with other players and contract manufacturers to scale up the production to 5 lakh units a month from July.



"UV-C in specific wavelength with the specific environment condition and unique dosage of time and intensity will sanitize any surface it touches. We have applied that unique dosage to Shuddhi Box and also used 360 degree method and electro optical with the help of medical experts and scientists," Roy said.

The company, which has been incubated with support of the Software Technology Parks of India under the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), has started offering the devices for about Rs 5,000 a unit. The price will drop to around Rs 2,000 once the production is scaled up.

Currently, imported disinfectant devices sell for Rs 5,000-6,000.

"We are coming up with several products on this technology. We have received demands for devices to disinfect laptops and tablets. All products will be in the form of an enclosure and any material that can fit into the enclosure will get disinfected," Roy said.

The government holds 10 per cent stake in Arista Vault after the company received funding under a scheme to promote entrepreneurship in the electronics sector.

"We worked under the guidelines of STPI, MeitY's Electropreneur Park to develop the Shuddhi Box with the help of Dr. Ashok Chowdhry, Associate Professor, Hepatologist, and Liver Transplant, ILBS Delhi. The technique was so far used in hospitals to sterilise surgical equipment. It can also sterilise banknotes," Roy said.



According to researchers at CDC USA and Journal of Virological Methods, the strength of the sun is strong enough to kill viruses like the novel coronavirus. The research team found that continuous low doses of far ultraviolet-C light can kill airborne flu viruses without harming human tissues.

"Shuddhi Box is based on the dose principal. Researchers say UV-C technology in the range of 253.7 nanometer wavelength is highly effective at killing bacteria and viruses by destroying the molecular bonds that hold their DNA together," Roy said.

Arista Vault has started delivering the device to hospitals and government organisations and is also selling it through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).

"We are also working with our distribution partners and channel partners to define their zones for all India distributorships and to spread it across the country so that it can reach masses at a better price," Roy said. PTI PRS

OnePlus 8 Series to be Launched in India in Next Few Months

Chinese premium smartphone maker OnePlus on Tuesday unveiled its latest flagship OnePlus 8 series that will be launched in India in the next few months.

The global launch comes at a time when the Indian government has extended the nationwide lockdown to May 3 to contain the spread of COVID-19 infections.

Given that smartphones have not been classified under the essential items category (like grocery and medicines), they are not allowed to be sold online or in physical stores amid the lockdown.

While the company did not provide a specific launch date for India, it said "the OnePlus 8 flagship series and the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z will be available in India this summer".

It also did not disclose the India pricing of the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro.

In the US, the devices will be priced USD 699 onwards and will be available later this month.

OnePlus chose to unveil the devices via a webcast instead of an on-ground event in view of the coronavirus pandemic that has claimed thousands of lives globally.

The OnePlus 8 Pro includes features like 6.78-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset, up to 12 GB RAM, quad rear camera set up (with 48MP main camera) and 4,510 mAh battery (with Warp Charge 30 Wireless charging solution).

The company said it will be among the the first in the industry to release a full line up of 5G devices in 2020.

According to Counterpoint Research Associate Director Tarun Pathak, in terms of features, OnePlus will again live up to its expectations of an Android flagship.

"With 5G and latest features, it is again likely to be among the top Android flagships. For sales perspective, its launch quarter will surely be impacted for example in India where around one-third of its annual sales happen during launch in Q2 quarter," he added.

To offset this, OnePlus will need to aggressively scale up its efforts in the third and fourth quarters, he said.

"...we think demand will be shifted in India due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Given its brand image and good exposure to online, it look for different ways to push sales especially related to upgrades as it has a loyal userbase.

"This will also be the first time when OnePlus new launch sales will overlap with the launch quarters of Samsung Note and Apple iPhone refresh too..So we expect a strong competitiom in India in the premium market in Q3 and Q4," he said. PTI SR BAL

Gadgets See 103% Rise in Loan Applications this Diwali: Indialends Survey

This Diwali, Lifestyle spends have seen the highest growth in loan applications among metro cities where in loans for gadgets and electronics have seen a spike of 103% in 2019 as compared to 2018; while there has been a rise of 48% for personal loan applications for home renovation or improvement; loans for funding weddings saw an increase of 46%. All these can be attributed to the fact that Diwali is considered to be an auspicious occasion for shopping, gifting as well as home renovation as it is a symbol of peace and prosperity.

A staggering 95% increase was observed in loan applications for funding of business, where in Mumbai witnessed the highest growth followed by NCR and Bangalore with 137%, 113% and 80% increase respectively. Tier 2 cities also saw a 43% increase in the applications for travel loans, followed by a spike of 42% in debt consolidation in 2019 as compared to 2018. 

These were some of the significant findings of a new survey on loan trends among Indian millennials conducted by IndiaLends — a new-age digital lending platform around the festive season. 

The study was conducted among Indian millennials across six major metro cities — Mumbai, NCR, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata as well as six Tier 2 cities including Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Indore, Chandigarh and Vizag.  In all, 12,391 respondents were evaluated for their loan requirements in eight main categories, namely Wedding, Funding Business, Education, Travel, Debt Consolidation, Home Renovation, Gadgets or Electronics and Unexpected Expenses. 

 

 

Some of the other findings were: 


  • There has been a 50% rise in loan applications among women in 2019 as compared to 2018 in Bangalore whereas 48% women in Mumbai have applied for loans in 2019 as compared to 2018 

  • The loan ticket size range was between 17,000 to 15,00,000 for funding businesses; while home improvement cost varied between 40,000 to 28,00,000 in INR

  • The wedding loan ticket size was in the range of 20,000 to 29, 00,000; while loan for unexpected expenses like medical emergencies was in the range of 38,000 to 34,00,000.

  • NCR saw the highest change in loan applications for weddings being 98% as compared to 2018; whereas Bangalore recorded the highest change in applications in travel loans being 64%

  • Mumbai saw a change of 105% in loan applications for home renovations in 2019 as compared to 2018 while NCR recorded the highest change in loan applications for gadgets and electronics being 286%.

Now Interact with Amazon's Alexa in Hindi

Users in India can now speak to Amazon's voice assistant, Alexa in Hindi to carry out tasks like checking cricket scores, requesting for songs and even asking how she's doing.

Launched in India in 2017, Alexa was able to understand and pronounce names of popular places, names and songs in regional languages like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Punjabi but supported commands only in English.

With the latest update, Alexa can now understand customers speaking to her completely in Hindi and Hinglish.

Alexa, which competes with digital assistants like Apple's Siri and Google Assistant, is available across Amazon's Echo range of devices as well as products from brands like Bose, MyBox, iBall and Syska.

"India has uniquely challenged our AI teams with its cultural and linguistic diversity. We have worked to ensure that customers can interact with Alexa in different regional variants of colloquial Hindi," Amazon Vice President and Head Scientist, Alexa AI, Rohit Prasad told reporters here.

He added that along with Amazon's own team, many Indian users contributed to Hindi development through the Cleo skill on Alexa.

Prasad said Alexa already has 500 "skills" for Hindi language and the firm will continue to work with developers in India to introduce more such skills.

Skills are capabilities like providing weather forecasts, ordering cabs or tell stories by simply asking Alexa to do so. Over 90,000 skills are available for Alexa worldwide with a significant number catering to Indian users.

Prasad said Alexa has been equipped with a rich Hindi vocabulary and speaks in fluent Hindi while responding to customer requests.

He indicated that other languages could also be introduced in the future.

While all Amazon Echo smart speakers like Echo Dot, Echo Show 5 and Echo Input and select smart speakers from Bose will get the update right away, brands such as Motorola, MyBox, Boat, Portronics, Fingers, Sony, iBall and Dish will launch and update their existing Alexa-built in devices to support Hindi soon.

In August last year, Amazon had announced the launch of a new skill 'Cleo' to enable users to teach Alexa local Indian languages like Hindi, Marathi and Bengali. This, it had said, would also help the e-commerce giant improving Alexa's speech recognition capabilities as well.

Last year, Amazon had also started making its e-commerce marketplace available in Hindi to users in India to enable the next 100 million users to shop online.

Tech companies like Google and Amazon are betting on vernacular languages as reports suggest that 90 per cent of new internet users in India are native language speakers. This makes it imperative for these tech companies to offer rich experience in local languages in India that is witnessing strong growth in Internet usage as well as consumption of connected devices. Online Customers in Asia prefer Asian-made Gadgets; Apple Leading in Vietnam only

Samsung is one of the most popular mobile phone brands among customers of online financing services in the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and India. Mobile devices made in China like Xiaomi, Vivo, OPPO are taking second and third places by the popularity in these four countries. At the same time, Apple is leading in Vietnam only. These are the findings of the study conducted by the international financial holding Robocash Group.



The company studied preferences of almost 1.8 mln customers using its services providing online lending in the Philippines, Vietnam and India and Shariah-compliant funding in Indonesia. According to the findings, 26.3% of customers in Indonesia use Xiaomi smartphones bringing the brand in the first place, while Samsung and OPPO follow with 21.1% and 19.3%, respectively.



As for India and the Philippines, Samsung is the most popular mobile phone brand in these countries taking 26.4% and 22.7%, respectively. Moreover, second place in India belongs to Vivo with 17.5%, and OPPO is third (16.1%). It stands in contrast with the findings in the Philippines, where OPPO (20.6%) is in advance of Vivo (11.0%). As for Vietnam, Apple is the most popular mobile phone brand (34.1%) that is followed by Samsung (27.1%) and OPPO (17.0%).

In overall, the Asian markets have demonstrated a strong predominance of smartphones as a tool to search and obtain online financing. This correlation has been formed by high penetration of the mobile internet and the intention of online customers to consume “here and now” without any geographical or other hurdles. It is applicable both in case of unexpected expenses and occasional purchases.

One more specific found by analysts reflects the thoughtfulness of customers. Thus, smartphone users tend to scrutinize the information about the product. Furthermore, desktop users also give place to the latter by an average number of pages viewed and session time.

Smart Band Sales in India to Grow at 41% CAGR until 2023, Says Report

HP Launches 3D Printers in India, Prices Start at ₹2.5 Crore

Two years after unveiling it own branded 3D Printers, technology giant HP today finally launched its 3D printing solution in India too. The prices are starting from Rs 2.5 crore, to tap into sectors like manufacturing, education and defence.

3D printing refers to creation of a 3-dimensional object in which layers of materials are formed with computers controlling the process.

HP’s Multi Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solution will be available in India primarily through the company’s specialised partners. It has signed up Imaginarium and Adroitec as the first resellers of its 3D printers for India.

Currently, the printers use plastic as raw material. However, HP has announced its intent to use metal and colours for the 3D printers in future.



“Industry 4.0 is being impacted by a range of technologies -- Internet of Things, Cloud etc. The launch of our 3D printers in India comes at a time when the government is pushing manufacturing in India and we see a lot of potential for our printers,” HP India Managing Director Sumeer Chandra told PTI.

He added that the product would be aimed at sectors like manufacturing, defence, healthcare, education and product labs as well as service bureaus that provide printing as a service.

The price tag of Rs 2.50 crore includes pre and post processing unit, the 3D printer and initial consumables. It also includes 3-year maintenance and service contract.

Chandra explained that using 3D printing, making prototypes is faster and competitively priced with current options.

He added that these 3D printers also allow for better customisation.

According to industry reports, the global 3D printing market is expected to be worth over USD 32 billion by 2023, growing at a CAGR of more than 25% between 2017 and 2023.

The reports attribute the growth to factors like ease of development of customised products, ability to reduce overall manufacturing costs, and government investments in the 3D printing projects for the development and deployment of the technology.

As per a 6Wresearch, the Indian 3D printer market is expected to cross USD 79 million by 2021, with automotive applications accounting for the biggest chunk of business.

It has been a long time that HP, maker of World's biggest printer, has been teasing the tech enthusiasts with its 3D printer plans for quite sometime. Recently, during a 3D printing conference held in the New York City, the company had demonstrated how a plastic chain it had printed on its prototype 3D printing machine was strong enough to lift a car.

Currently, HP is also in midst of testing printing machines that can also print integrated circuits. It has actually done the same chain test, but this time with embedded circuits printed in that clearly showed the strain and stress that the chain was suffering.

In 2016, we profiled a Mumbai based startup called MaherSoft that builds Industrial and consumer grade 3D Printers in India available at cost of about Rs.75,000, which is far cheaper than 3D Printers by HP.

More such startups are in India that build and offer 3D Printers for prototyping purpose available for much affordable rates such as Pramaan and Brahma3. These printers are however not for commercial or large scale industrial purpose like ones by HP and Mahersoft.

Introducing India’s First Battery-Powered Interactive Payment Card

IndusInd Bank and Dynamics Inc. today at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (“CES”) announced plans to introduce the first battery-powered, interactive payment cards to the Indian market in 2018.

The new IndusInd Bank card from Dynamics has multiple buttons that let the consumers use a single card to pay in multiple ways. With a touch of a button consumers can select credit, points or monthly instalments as payment option. A different colour light will activate based on the selected payment option.

The solution requires no changes to the payment infrastructure or merchant systems. A consumer can pay using points or installment anywhere Mastercard is accepted.
